Do not threaten a report, recruit teammates to pile on, or treat a bad score, unusual build, or strategic disagreement as proof of toxicity.
The exact buttons differ between MOBAs. The procedural examples below are documented for League of Legends; use your own game’s current controls and rules for other titles.

What counts as toxicity—and what does not
A teammate is not automatically toxic because they are losing, make repeated mechanical mistakes, choose an unconventional build, or disagree with your call. The useful distinction is between ordinary poor play and conduct that is abusive or deliberately disruptive.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Insults, harassment, or other targeted abuse.
- Hate speech.
- Intentional game-ruining actions such as griefing or feeding.
- AFK behavior.
- Other disruptive conduct that interferes with the match.
The same guidance says these facts alone are not reportable: poor play by someone who is still trying to win, strong language that does not insult or demean another person, and unusual champions, builds, or off-meta experiments. A player can be frustrating without violating a rule. Report what the person did, not whether you disliked the result.
| What you observe | How to classify it | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| A teammate misses skill shots or has a very low score while continuing to play. | Poor performance, not proof of misconduct. | Ignore the score, make useful calls, and keep playing. |
| A teammate chooses an unusual champion, item path, or lane strategy. | Off-meta experimentation, not automatically reportable. | Judge the actual conduct rather than the build. |
| A teammate repeatedly insults or demeans another player. | Harassment or disruptive communication. | Mute, disengage, and report the specific behavior. |
| A teammate deliberately feeds, griefs, disconnects, or sabotages objectives. | Potential intentional game disruption or AFK. | Stop arguing, record the concrete pattern mentally, and report it through the game. |
| A teammate makes one disagreement about an objective call. | Normal strategic conflict unless it becomes abusive or deliberately disruptive. | Use one neutral call or ping, then return attention to play. |
This test prevents two common errors: letting genuine abuse continue because it is called “just banter,” and filing a retaliatory report against someone merely for playing badly.
The low-escalation protocol: four moves in order
Use the following sequence when a chat channel turns hostile. It is designed to remove the argument while preserving any communication that can still help the team.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →1. Stop answering the personal attack
Do not defend your rank, explain your history, prove that a teammate is wrong, or answer an insult with a sharper insult. Every additional sentence gives the conflict another opening and takes attention away from the map. Riot’s support guidance puts disengagement first: its reporting FAQ says, “The only way to handle these types of players is to mute them and continue playing the game followed by giving them a report at the end of the match.” That is platform guidance from Riot, not a guarantee that muting improves a player’s statistics.
2. Mute or ignore the player
Use the game’s built-in mute or ignore control as soon as the messages become personal, repetitive, or distracting. The exact location and whether chat, voice, emotes, or pings can be muted separately vary by MOBA and can change with interface updates. Look for the player’s scoreboard, nameplate, communication menu, or match settings rather than relying on instructions from a different game.
Selective muting is preferable when the game supports it: silence the abusive channel or player while retaining useful team pings. If the game only offers an all-or-nothing option, choose the setting that protects concentration. Muting is not a punishment and does not decide whether the player will be reported; it is a way to end the live argument.

3. Keep communication factual and objective-focused
If coordination can still change the outcome, send one short, neutral call and then return to playing. Examples include:
- “Group for objective.”
- “Back off.”
- “Wave first, then rotate.”
- “No fight—wait for cooldowns.”
These are illustrative scripts, not quotations or tested interventions. Avoid adding blame (“you always throw”), sarcasm, or a demand that the teammate apologize. In League, Riot’s support FAQ identifies Smart Ping as an alternative communication channel; other MOBAs may use different names or offer different controls. If the player keeps abusing chat, do not continue the conversation simply because you still need to make calls.
4. Report concrete misconduct, without announcing it
When the behavior fits a report category, use the game’s reporting path and describe the observable conduct briefly. Do not type “reported” as a threat, ask everyone to report the same person, or argue about whether the report is deserved. Riot specifically advises against repeatedly threatening reports or recruiting other players to submit them.
How reporting works in League of Legends
League’s current Player Reporting Guide and FAQ describes in-client reporting before, during, and after a match. It also describes reporting from match history for up to five days. Riot’s interface can change, so follow the labels shown in your client rather than an old screenshot or a guide for another region.
What to include
- Select the category that matches the conduct, such as harassment, hate speech, intentional game disruption, AFK, or another available disruptive-behavior option.
- State what happened in neutral, behavior-specific terms: repeated personal insults, a targeted slur, deliberate feeding, or a pattern of leaving and returning.
- Separate the conduct from the match result. “Went 0/8 while attempting plays” is not the same claim as “stood in lane repeatedly to die after saying they would ruin the match.”
A concise report is more useful than a long argument. Do not promise yourself that a report will produce a ban, a warning, or a message back to you. Riot says its system evaluates match data, chat, and the player’s report history; one report can trigger review, while the outcome depends on severity and context. The Instant Feedback System FAQ explains the system and its feedback limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat happens after submission
Reporting transfers the decision to the game’s enforcement process. It does not require you to keep watching the person, persuade teammates, or monitor the result. Continue through the post-match screen only as far as needed to submit the report, then leave the interaction. If the game offers a block or post-match communication control, use its official option rather than moving the argument into direct messages.

League’s current severe-chat policy note
Riot’s developer post, “/dev: Bans for Severely Abusive Chat”, says gameplay bans for severely disruptive communications begin with patch 26.5. The examples described include hate speech, threats of violence, and severe aggression, which Riot distinguishes from mild flaming. The post also indicates that rollout details may evolve. This is a League-specific policy note; it should not be treated as a rule used by every MOBA publisher, and players should check the current official policy before relying on a particular enforcement detail.
Choosing between selective mute and limited communication
The practical choice is not “talk constantly” versus “never communicate.” It is whether a particular channel is still helping the objective. Use this decision table:
| Situation | Communication choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Personal attacks are appearing, but the team can still coordinate through pings. | Mute the player or chat channel; retain useful pings if possible. | Removes the argument while preserving time-sensitive information. |
| Chat is hostile, but an objective is imminent. | Send one factual objective ping or short call, then disengage. | Coordination has a clear purpose and a natural stopping point. |
| The teammate uses every call to restart the argument. | Mute or ignore completely. | Further replies have no coordination value. |
| The game offers no separate controls for chat and pings. | Choose the setting that keeps you focused; communicate only through the remaining safe channel, if any. | Interfaces differ, and concentration is more important than preserving a hostile channel. |
Do not confuse your own microphone mute with muting an incoming teammate. A microphone mute switch silences your outgoing audio; it does not silence another player’s messages. Incoming communication must be controlled with the game’s own mute, ignore, or voice settings.
Why disengagement matters to the rest of the team
A 2018 observational study by J. A. de Mesquita Neto and Karin Becker, “Relating conversational topics and toxic behavior effects in a MOBA game,” examined League of Legends Tribunal data. It reported that allies of toxic players were generally more affected than opponents: they showed lower performance and more toxic expressions, and some tolerated or copied the behavior. The study is useful context for leaving the exchange instead of normalizing it, but it does not prove that muting causes better performance, and it should not be generalized automatically to every MOBA, player group, or match.
In practical terms, disengagement protects several scarce resources at once: your attention, your time to read the map, and the team’s ability to receive a clear call. It also avoids adding a second source of misconduct to the match. A player who answers abuse with abuse can create a new reportable exchange even when the original provocation was real.
A complete in-match checklist
- Recognize the trigger. Decide whether the message is a personal attack, hate speech, a threat, deliberate disruption, or simply frustration about a play.
- Do not reply to the personal content. Skip explanations, insults, sarcasm, and report threats.
- Mute or ignore. Use the current in-game control for the player or channel.
- Make one useful call if needed. Use a short ping or factual instruction such as grouping for an objective or backing off.
- Return to the game. Watch the map, farm, position, cooldowns, and objective timer rather than the chat window.
- Remember the behavior. If it continues, note the specific conduct and category without trying to build a case in chat.
- Report through the official system. Submit a concise, behavior-specific report at the available point before, during, after, or from match history, depending on the game.
- End contact. Leave post-game arguments and direct-message exchanges alone; block or use the game’s official communication controls where available.
Common escalation traps—and the better replacement
“I’ll teach them a lesson in chat”
A counter-insult changes the match from one person’s misconduct into a dispute involving you. Replace it with silence, a mute, and an objective ping only if the ping serves the team.

“Everyone should report this person”
Recruiting reports creates more chat conflict and can become harassment. Submit your own accurate report through the official system and stop there.
“They are feeding because their score is bad”
A poor score is evidence of a result, not intent. Look for deliberate, repeated game-ruining conduct before selecting an intentional-disruption category.
“The unusual build proves they are trolling”
Off-meta choices are not automatically misconduct. Report behavior that is abusive or intentionally disruptive, not novelty by itself.
“I need to keep the chat open so I do not miss calls”
If the channel is preventing you from processing the game, its cost is already clear. Use selective mute or preserve only the communication type your game lets you separate safely.
“A report guarantees a penalty”
Riot’s system reviews context and does not promise a particular outcome. Reporting is the correct handoff, not a guarantee of a ban or feedback message.

Adapting the method to other MOBAs
The behavioral sequence transfers well, but the buttons, report categories, timing, and enforcement standards do not. Before queueing, identify whether your game provides:
Best Value
- Per-player mute or ignore controls.
- Separate switches for text, voice, pings, emotes, or quick-chat.
- In-match and post-match reporting.
- Match-history reporting and any time limit.
- Blocking or direct-message controls after a match.
Do not assume that League’s report window, Smart Ping terminology, category names, or severe-chat policy exists in another title. The 2018 study itself describes MOBA communication features as game-dependent. Check the publisher’s current support page or in-client help for the game you are playing, then apply the same principle: remove the hostile channel, preserve only useful coordination, and report observable misconduct.
What to do before the next match
Use the pre-game settings to choose the smallest communication surface that still supports your play. If your game offers a pre-game mute preference, a separate voice setting, or a way to hide emotes, configure only what you need; there is no universal “best” setting because interfaces and team roles differ. Know where the in-match mute and report controls are before a conflict starts, since searching through menus while under pressure makes engagement more likely.
Set a personal rule in advance: one neutral call, then mute; no public report threats; no post-game argument. A preset rule turns the decision into a routine action instead of a debate with the teammate.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When the right answer is to leave the interaction
After muting and reporting, you do not owe the teammate a final explanation. If the game’s systems allow you to block further contact, use them. If the match has ended, close the chat or move to the next screen instead of reopening the dispute. The aim is not to win an argument; it is to finish the match without adopting the behavior you are trying to stop.
For League of Legends, Riot’s current guidance supports that sequence: mute or ignore, continue playing, and report specific misconduct. For every other MOBA, preserve the principle while verifying the game’s own controls and rules.
