To reduce spam in YouTube Live Chat, combine blocked words, review of potentially inappropriate messages, and an active human moderator. If that is not enough, add slow mode or restrict chat to subscribers or members. These controls can reduce disruption, but YouTube says its automated moderation is imperfect.
Set up moderation before you go live
- Open your channel’s moderation settings. In YouTube Studio, go to Settings → Community moderation → Content controls. Depending on your account view, platform, or YouTube’s interface changes, you may see different labels; look for the channel’s content or community moderation controls.
- Add recurring spam terms to Blocked words. Enter words and phrases that repeatedly appear in unwanted messages. YouTube says messages containing or closely matching blocked words are blocked. Review the list over time: recognizable terms are useful, but spammers may vary their wording.
- Choose a setting for potentially inappropriate messages. YouTube describes Basic as holding potentially inappropriate messages and Strict as holding a broader range. A creator or moderator can show or hide held messages. Someone needs to review the queue; if nobody acts, held messages remain hidden.
- Assign moderators. Choose people who can monitor the chat and respond while you host. YouTube distinguishes standard moderators from managing moderators. Managing moderators have additional moderation controls but cannot access YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, so configure channel-level settings yourself or ensure the right person has the necessary access.
- Decide on an escalation option. If a spam surge is likely, be ready to enable slow mode or restrict participation. Subscribers-only chat can include a minimum subscription-duration requirement; tell viewers what to expect if you use it.
Choose a control that fits the problem

Start with the least restrictive controls that address the problem. Slow mode reduces how quickly participants can post without limiting who is eligible; access restrictions are a stronger response when spam continues. You can use slow mode and subscribers-only chat together, but not subscribers-only and members-only chat together.

Respond to spam during the stream
- Remove obvious spam. Have a moderator remove the message rather than letting a pile-on distract the stream.
- Use a timeout for continued disruption. A timeout temporarily prevents the participant from chatting. YouTube Help lists timeout durations from 10 seconds to 24 hours; select a duration proportionate to the behavior.
- Hide persistent or coordinated offenders. Hiding a user keeps their messages and comments from appearing to other viewers, without telling the user that they have been hidden.
- Review held messages. Show legitimate messages and leave spam hidden. Do not assume the filter catches every unwanted message or correctly identifies every legitimate one.
- Add friction only if needed. Turn on slow mode to lower the posting rate. If that does not control the disruption, consider subscribers-only chat and, where appropriate, a minimum subscription duration. These settings can make it harder for new viewers to participate.
- Turn off live chat only as a last operational fallback. YouTube’s managing-moderator guidance allows live chat to be turned off during an event. This ends chat participation for everyone.
Understand URL filtering and chat limits
YouTube’s comment-settings guidance says live-chat messages containing URLs are blocked. That does not mean every comment setting works identically in live chat, so use the live-chat controls for live moderation rather than assuming a setting in one interface maps to the other.

YouTube’s live-stream overview says participants may send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, and each message is limited to 200 characters. Those are platform participation limits, not a guarantee against spam.

Review the incident after the stream
Live-chat replay is available with stream archives by default, according to YouTube; a channel can turn replay off. Use replay to understand what happened and refine blocked terms or moderator coverage for a future event. Keep this review distinct from moderating post-stream video comments: replay is a record of live chat, not the live moderation queue.
