You choose your character’s body and facial features during creation, and you can revise many of those choices later at an in-game Barber Shop. Transmog changes the appearance of equipment rather than the character itself. In the current system available in Midnight (described by Blizzard on February 12, 2026), you save gear looks in Outfit Slots, create several outfits, and switch them manually or automatically. Unlocking slots and changing an outfit’s style costs in-game gold; switching between outfits you already unlocked is free.
Which customization method should you use?
Use character creation or the Barber Shop when you want to change the character model: skin, hair, eyes, facial details, jewelry, tattoos, scars, beards, ornaments, or other race-specific features. Use transmog when you want your armor and weapons to look different while keeping their current statistics and effects.

| Method | When it applies | What it changes | Availability | Cost and switching |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Character creation | When making a new character | Race, body and facial appearance, hair, eyes and other available features | Depends on the selected race and the choices offered on that creation screen | No separate Barber visit; the creation interface determines what is available |
| Barber Shop | For an existing character | Many character features, including hair and facial features; Blizzard has also described gender changes and some class-specific cosmetic choices | Race- and class-dependent options can vary by update | The game presents the applicable in-game charge before you confirm; the reviewed official overview does not state a universal price |
| Transmog and Outfit Slots | Whenever you want to change the look of equipment | Visible armor and weapon appearances, without replacing the gear’s gameplay function | Uses appearances your character has collected and the rules shown by the current game client | Unlocking an Outfit Slot and updating its style cost gold; switching among unlocked outfits is free |
These systems do not replace one another. A new hairstyle will not alter a helmet’s appearance, and a transmog set will not change your character’s face or skin.

Customize a new character during creation
Character creation is the broadest opportunity to decide how the character will look before you enter the world. Select a race first, then review every category the creation screen exposes. Blizzard’s Shadowlands customization preview described choices such as skin tones, hairstyles and eye colors, along with tattoos, jewelry, beards, scars and hair ornaments.

Expect race-specific menus
Do not assume that a choice shown for one race is available to every race. The available hair, skin, jewelry, tattoo, scar and ornament options are tied to the race you selected. The number and type of categories can also change when Blizzard adds a customization update.
Check combinations instead of stopping at the first category
Some options that were once linked to one another were redesigned so they could be selected independently. For example, a particular face, hair style or ornament may no longer force a single matching choice in another category. Move through the full creation panel and test combinations before finalizing the character.
Class-specific appearance examples
Some cosmetic choices depend on class as well as race. Druid shapeshift appearances are a notable example: Blizzard has described choosing those forms through the Barber Shop rather than treating them as ordinary armor transmogs. The exact list shown to a Druid can change with game updates.
Change an existing character at the Barber Shop
For an established character, the official in-game location for appearance changes is the Barber Shop. Blizzard’s 2020 Barber Shop update described changes to gender, hair, facial features and more. The Shadowlands preview also described selecting Druid shapeshift appearances there.
Step-by-step
- Find a Barber Shop in a city or settlement that has one. The shop’s location and visual signage can differ by faction and zone.
- Interact with the barber. The character-customization interface opens with the categories available to that character.
- Review each category. Typical categories include hair and facial features; other choices depend on race, class and the current patch.
- Preview the result from multiple angles. A hairstyle, ornament or facial detail can look different under the shop’s lighting than it does in the open world.
- Confirm only after checking the displayed charge. The price is an in-game gold charge shown by the client, not a universal figure established in Blizzard’s current overview.
The Barber Shop is not a promise that every creation option can be changed. The available menu is character-specific, and an update can add, remove or reorganize choices. If a feature is missing, verify that you selected the intended race or class and check the game’s current patch notes before assuming the account is malfunctioning.

Race and patch additions are normal
Blizzard has continued to add race-specific choices through updates. Its Seeds of Renewal post, for example, mentioned additional Troll hair colors, a Draenei skin color and new warlock demon options. A 9.1.5 update covered additional looks for Highmountain Tauren, Lightforged Draenei, Nightborne and Void Elves. Those announcements demonstrate the pattern of ongoing additions; they are not a complete catalog of what every race currently offers.
How the current transmog system works
Blizzard’s February 12, 2026 description says the updated Transmog system is available now in Midnight. The central change is that you apply and save an appearance to an Outfit Slot instead of treating each replacement item as a reason to rebuild the look from scratch.
Outfit Slots make a look follow replacement gear
When an Outfit Slot has a selected appearance, newly equipped equipment in that slot inherits the chosen look. You can replace an item for higher item level, a different stat profile or a new drop without manually reapplying the same visual treatment to every replacement. The slot stores the look; the gear continues to provide its normal gameplay function.
Existing transmogs and legacy outfits
Blizzard says previously applied transmogs and legacy outfits were converted into Custom Sets. If a familiar older outfit appears under that name, it is part of the migration to the current system rather than a lost collection. Review those Custom Sets before rebuilding a look from individual appearances.
Unlocking and editing slots
- Unlocking an additional Outfit Slot costs in-game gold.
- Updating the appearance assigned to an Outfit Slot also costs in-game gold.
- Switching between Outfit Slots that you have already unlocked is free.
- Blizzard’s current overview does not publish a single exact price for these actions, so the amount shown in your client is the authoritative charge for your character and version.
Build and save an outfit
The labels and panel placement can change as the interface is updated, but the workflow follows the same model: choose a slot, set its appearance, save it, then decide how you want to activate it.

- Open the character or transmog interface. Use the game’s current transmog entry point rather than trying to alter the item’s statistics.
- Select an Outfit Slot. If the slot is locked, the client displays the gold cost to unlock it.
- Choose the visible appearance for the relevant equipment. Select from appearances your character is allowed to use; eligibility can depend on the item type and current game rules.
- Review the full silhouette. Check head, shoulders, chest, hands, legs, feet, back and weapon appearances together. A single replacement can change the result if its slot has no saved appearance.
- Save or update the outfit. The game displays the gold charge for changing the style before confirmation.
- Test the outfit after equipping different gear. A replacement item in that Outfit Slot should inherit the saved visual appearance, which is the main advantage over repeatedly applying a look to individual items.
If a new item does not display the expected appearance, first confirm that it occupies the same equipment slot covered by the outfit and that the outfit is active. Then check whether the appearance is eligible for that item type and whether you saved the update rather than merely previewing it.

Manual switching
You can change among unlocked outfits from the outfit interface. Blizzard also describes adding an outfit to an action bar, giving you a direct button for a manual change. This is useful when you want a town look, a role-play costume or a raid appearance without waiting for a location or specialization trigger.
- Open the saved-outfit list.
- Choose the outfit you want to use.
- Drag or add that outfit to an action-bar slot if you want a one-click control.
- Click the action-bar entry when you want to change looks.
Changing between outfits that are already unlocked is free, although editing one of those outfits still uses the gold-priced style-update action.
Situation-based switching
The current system can assign outfits to situations so the game changes your appearance automatically. Blizzard’s examples include going to town, entering a dungeon, changing specialization and returning home. The available triggers and their exact labels are controlled by the current client.
- Open the outfit’s situation or automatic-switching settings.
- Choose the trigger offered by the interface, such as a specialization, town, dungeon or home situation.
- Assign the saved outfit to that trigger.
- Test the transition in a low-risk location before relying on it during group content.
- If two rules overlap, review their order or specificity in the interface and leave one clear outfit assignment for the situation you care about.
Automatic switching changes the appearance selection; it does not change your specialization, equipment stats or combat build. Treat it as a presentation rule, not a gear-management system.

Design a reliable customization workflow
Separate the character plan from the gear plan
- Decide on permanent character traits at creation or the Barber Shop: race, skin, hair, eyes, facial details, jewelry, tattoos and similar options.
- Use Outfit Slots for temporary or activity-based clothing: a city set, dungeon set, specialization look or role-play costume.
- Use Druid-form customization at the Barber Shop when that class-specific option is available, rather than searching for it as an armor appearance.
Name outfits by purpose
Names such as “Town,” “Dungeon,” “Fire specialization” or “Travel” are easier to maintain than names based only on a color. A purpose-based name still makes sense after you replace one weapon or armor piece.
Keep one conservative fallback
Save a practical appearance with unobstructed shoulders, a visible weapon and no unusual head effect. If an automatic rule produces an unexpected result, the fallback gives you a known outfit to select while you inspect the situation settings.

The option is missing at the Barber Shop
- Check the character’s race and class; many menus are not universal.
- Confirm that you are viewing the current patch’s categories rather than relying on an older guide or screenshot.
- For a Druid form or warlock demon appearance, look for the class-specific section instead of the ordinary hair or armor sections.
- If the feature was announced for a particular update, make sure your game client has completed that update.
A replacement item loses the look
- Verify that the replacement occupies the equipment slot covered by the Outfit Slot.
- Confirm that the intended outfit is active; changing gear does not necessarily activate a different saved outfit.
- Check that you saved the style update and accepted the displayed gold charge.
- Review the appearance’s eligibility for the new item type.
An automatic switch happens at the wrong time
- Inspect every situation rule assigned to the outfit.
- Remove overlapping assignments temporarily and test one trigger at a time.
- Use an action-bar button as a manual override while you diagnose the rule.
- Remember that changing specialization can be a trigger, so a switch may be intentional even when you remain in the same zone.
The gold charge is unexpected
Unlocking a slot and changing its style are separate chargeable actions. Switching among slots that are already unlocked is free. Read the confirmation panel before accepting either paid action, and do not rely on a price quoted for another character, region or patch.
Version notes and limits of the current guidance
On September 2, 2025, Blizzard described the transmog changes as an upcoming overhaul and warned that interface elements could change. Its February 12, 2026 article describes the updated system as available now. For current behavior, use what the Midnight client shows; older previews are useful for understanding the development timeline, not for assuming that every button is still in the same place.

Frequently asked questions
Can I customize my face after character creation?
Yes. Blizzard has identified the Barber Shop as the place for many changes to hair and facial features, along with other character options available to your race and class.
Does transmog change my character’s statistics?
No. Transmog changes the visible appearance of equipment. The item you equip still supplies its own statistics and gameplay effects.
Do all races have the same appearance options?
No. Hair, skin, jewelry, tattoos, scars, ornaments and other features are race-specific, and some cosmetic choices are also class-specific.
Is switching between saved outfits free?
Yes, once the Outfit Slots are unlocked. Unlocking a slot and updating its style are the actions Blizzard identifies as costing gold.
What happened to my old transmog sets?
Blizzard says previously applied transmogs and legacy outfits were converted into Custom Sets in the current system.
