You can change the Google Search widget’s appearance and shortcut actions from the Google app, but the controls differ by platform. Google’s help pages call this the Search widget on Android and the Google app widget in some iPhone instructions. On Android, open Google app > profile picture or initial > Settings > Customize Search widget to edit shortcuts, color, and transparency. On iPhone or iPad, use Google app > profile picture or initial > Settings > Widgets to choose a widget theme and up to four favorite buttons on the medium widget. iPhone users can also put Google actions on the Lock Screen, in Control Center, or behind the Action Button.
This guide covers adding the widget, changing what its buttons do, restoring a missing search bar, and selecting the right quick-access option for your device and iOS version. The home-screen widget settings and the iPhone’s system-level controls are separate, so use the path that matches what you want to change.

What you can customize
Google uses the term Search widget for the Android bar and for the iPhone and iPad home-screen widgets. The editable features depend on where the widget or shortcut lives. A widget’s appearance settings do not automatically change a shortcut assigned elsewhere.

Changing the home-screen widget and adding a system shortcut are separate tasks. If you only want a different color, transparency level, theme, or set of visible buttons, use the widget settings. If you want one-tap access while the phone is locked or while another app is open, use the Lock Screen, Control Center, or Action Button instructions below.

Before you start
Install or update the Google app before looking for these controls. Google may add or remove individual actions as the app changes, and menus can vary with your operating-system version, device, region, account, and staged rollout. The names below match Google’s documented paths; if a control is absent, choose from the options currently displayed instead of assuming the widget is damaged.
On Android, the launcher controls where a widget can be placed, while the Google app controls the Search widget’s color, transparency, and shortcut choices. On iPhone and iPad, Apple controls placement through the widget gallery, while the Google app controls the widget theme and the medium widget’s four buttons.
Android: add the Google Search widget
There are two official ways to place the Search widget on an Android phone or tablet. The first starts inside the Google app; the second uses the home-screen widget picker. The second method gives you more control over the page and position.
Add it from the Google app
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Choose Settings, then Customize Search widget.
- Tap Add at the top right.
The widget is added to the current home-screen arrangement when Android permits the app to place it there. If the page is full, the launcher may require you to make room or use its own placement flow. The Google app’s Add button is an alternative to finding the widget manually.
Add it from the Android home screen
- Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Find Google in the widget list.
- Touch and hold the Google widget, then drag it to the desired location.
Android’s general widget instructions are also documented in Android Help. Widget names and placement gestures can vary slightly by phone manufacturer, but the Google app’s customization page is the control center for the Search widget itself.
Android: change shortcuts, color, and transparency
After the widget is on your screen, edit it from the Google app rather than from the launcher:
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Customize Search widget.
- Use the controls below the preview: Shortcuts, Color, and Transparency.
Google describes these as the three main customization groups. The preview lets you check the visual result before leaving the page, so you can adjust the bar without repeatedly returning to the home screen.

Choose shortcut actions
The Shortcuts control determines which Google tasks are available from the bar. Google’s examples include searching for a song, translating text, and checking the weather. Select the actions that match the tasks you launch most often; the exact choices shown can depend on the Google app version and rollout on your device.
Shortcut selection changes the actions presented by the widget, not the search results themselves. If an action you expect is missing, check the list again after updating or use another Google entry point, such as Lens or Voice Search on an iPhone Lock Screen. The available list is not guaranteed to be identical across phones.
Match the bar to your home screen
Use Color to change the widget’s color treatment and Transparency to make the bar more or less prominent over your wallpaper. A more transparent setting can blend into a busy background, while a less transparent setting can make the search field easier to distinguish. The preview shows the effect before you leave the page.
Save or undo the appearance
Android saves these widget settings automatically when you leave the settings page. There is no separate Save button to press. To return to the widget’s previous look, tap Reset at the top right of the customization screen. Reset affects the widget’s customization rather than uninstalling the Google app or removing other Google settings.

When the Android search bar disappears
A missing bar is not always a setting you accidentally changed. Google notes that some versions of Discover no longer include a search bar. In that case, add the Google Search widget to the home screen using the steps above; the widget restores a direct search entry point even when Discover does not show one.
Older Android devices may also restrict removal of the Search widget. If a long press does not offer a remove option, the limitation may come from the device or launcher rather than from your Google account. You can still change the widget’s available appearance and shortcut settings when the customization page is present. Removing and re-adding the widget is therefore not always necessary or possible on older hardware.

iPhone and iPad: add the Google widget
- Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen until the icons begin to jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
- Search for Google.
- Select the Google widget type and size you want.
- Choose Add Widget, place it on the home screen, and tap Done.
If you installed the Google app recently and cannot find it in the widget gallery, open the app once and return to the gallery. Google documents the iPad widget in landscape mode; rotate an iPad horizontally if the widget is not offered in the expected layout. The widget gallery is controlled by iOS, so its placement gestures and Edit labels may differ slightly between releases.
Choose the size with your intended use in mind. The documented four-button favorite configuration applies to the medium Google widget. A different size may expose fewer controls or a different layout, so changing the size can change what is configurable.
iPhone and iPad: change the widget theme and favorite buttons
Change the widget theme
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Widgets, then Widget theme.
- Select the theme you want.
The theme setting changes the Google widget’s visual treatment. It is separate from the iPhone’s system-wide appearance setting and from the Android color controls. If you have more than one Google widget, the theme is chosen in the Google app’s widget settings rather than by editing a home-screen icon.
Assign the four medium-widget buttons
The medium Google widget supports four favorite shortcut buttons. To configure them, open Google app > profile picture or initial > Settings > Widgets, then choose each button number under Medium-widget and select an action. Repeat the process for each of the four numbered positions; selecting one does not automatically fill the others.
Google’s documented shortcut list includes:
- Activity
- Gemini
- Homework
- Incognito
- Lens
- Screenshots
- Song search
- Translate
- Translate – Camera
- Translate – Voice
- Voice Search
The list can change as Google updates the iOS app, so an action shown in the documentation may not appear on every account or release. If you need a different action, select another button number and choose from the options currently displayed on your phone. This configuration affects the buttons inside the medium home-screen widget; it does not assign the iPhone Action Button or replace a Lock Screen control.

Show information in the medium widget
The medium widget can display helpful information about popular topics or interests. Turn on Dynamic widget under Google app > profile picture or initial > Settings > Widgets to allow information such as stocks, sports, and weather to appear. This is an information-display option, not a replacement for the four configurable favorite buttons. If your priority is fixed shortcuts, configure the numbered buttons; if you want changing topical information, enable Dynamic widget as well.

iPhone Lock Screen: add Google search shortcuts
Lock Screen options require newer iOS versions and are independent of the home-screen widget theme and medium-widget favorites. They are useful when you want a search-related action without first unlocking to the home screen.
Add a Lock Screen widget (iOS 16 or later)
- From the Lock Screen, unlock the iPhone while staying on the Lock Screen.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen, then tap Customize.
- Choose Lock Screen, then tap Add Widgets.
- Select Google.
- Tap or drag a Search, Lens, or Voice Search widget into the available Lock Screen area.
- Tap Done.
This places a Google control where it can be reached from the Lock Screen. The available space depends on the Lock Screen layout and the other widgets you have placed there. These are iOS 16-and-later Lock Screen widgets, not the medium home-screen widget’s four favorites.

- Touch and hold the Lock Screen and tap Customize.
- Choose Lock Screen.
- Remove one of the default bottom shortcuts.
- Tap the empty circle.
- Find Google and select an action such as Lens, Voice Search, or Incognito.
- Tap Done.
This method replaces a default Lock Screen action rather than adding a separate widget row. It requires iOS 18 or later, whereas adding a Google Lock Screen widget requires iOS 16 or later.
iPhone Control Center: add a Google action
Google supports Control Center actions on iOS 18 or later. To add one:
- Open Control Center.
- Enter Control Center customization mode.
- Tap Add a Control.
- Search for Google.
- Select the action you want, such as AI Mode or Lens.
- Rearrange or resize the control if desired, then close Control Center.
Google notes that AI Mode may not be available in every region. If it does not appear in the picker, choose another listed Google action; availability can also depend on the app rollout and account. Control Center placement changes the system panel, not the Google home-screen widget.

- Tap Action Button.
- Choose Shortcut.
- Tap Choose a Shortcut.
- Search for Google.
- Select an action such as Lens or Voice Search.
- Press and hold the Action Button to trigger the selected Google action.
The Action Button assignment is a system-level shortcut. It does not alter the home-screen widget’s theme or the four buttons configured in the medium widget. If your iPhone does not show Action Button in Settings, it may not be an iPhone 15 Pro or later model with that hardware control.

Choose the right customization path
- Want a different Android bar color or opacity? Use Customize Search widget in the Google app and adjust Color or Transparency.
- Want different tasks on an Android bar? Open the same page and edit Shortcuts.
- Want four favorite buttons on an iPhone? Configure the numbered buttons under Widgets > Medium-widget.
- Want changing information such as weather or sports? Enable Dynamic widget for the iPhone or iPad medium widget.
- Want a Google action available without opening the home screen? Use an iPhone Lock Screen widget, a replacement Lock Screen shortcut, Control Center, or the Action Button, depending on your iOS version and model.
- Want a Google action from another app? Control Center is the broadest system-level option on iOS 18 or later; the Action Button is fastest when your iPhone has that hardware control.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The Google widget is missing from the iPhone gallery: Open the Google app once after installing it, then return to Edit > Add Widget.
- The iPad widget is not available: Check that the iPad is in landscape orientation, which is the orientation Google documents for this widget.
- Discover has no search bar on Android: Add the Google Search widget to the home screen; some Discover versions no longer include the bar.
- An Android widget cannot be removed: Older devices may restrict removal. Try the launcher’s widget controls, but do not assume the restriction is caused by your Google account.
- A shortcut is not listed: Google’s available actions can vary by app version, region, operating-system version, device, and staged rollout. Select from the actions currently shown in the relevant picker.
- AI Mode is absent from Control Center: Google says it may not be available in every region; use another available Google control.
- The Lock Screen replacement option is missing: Replacing the default bottom actions requires iOS 18 or later. On earlier supported releases, add a Google widget instead.
- The Action Button option is missing: The Google Action Button route requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Use a Lock Screen widget or Control Center on other iPhone models.
- Changes seem not to stick: On Android, leave the customization page to save automatically. On iPhone and iPad, finish the widget or system customization flow by tapping Done where shown.
- The widget looks different from the instructions: Check whether you selected the medium or another widget size, and confirm that the Google app is current. The four-button setup is specifically documented for the medium iPhone widget.
