Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShort answer: Open Android Auto’s App Launcher on the car display to access compatible apps. Google’s current help documentation does not promise a universal drag-and-drop control for changing launcher icon order, so the exact ability to rearrange apps depends on the Android Auto version, phone and vehicle display. The display may also show a separate recent-apps area, which is driven by recent use rather than a manually chosen home-screen layout.
First, identify which Android Auto “home screen” you mean
Android Auto uses more than one app surface. Calling the entire car interface the home screen can mean either the full App Launcher or the row or panel of recently used apps. The distinction matters because they behave differently.

| Surface | What it does | How its contents are determined | Can you set a custom order? |
|---|---|---|---|
| App Launcher | Opens the apps available to Android Auto. | Only apps that Android Auto supports and exposes from the connected phone are eligible. | Google’s current support material explains how to open it but does not establish one universal manual-reordering control. |
| Recent-apps area | Provides quick access to recently used navigation, media and communication apps, plus one additional app. | Recent activity and Android Auto’s interface rules. | It is not documented as a manually sorted icon grid. |
| Phone-side Android Auto settings | Controls certain appearance and accessibility options and, on some versions, may expose launcher-related settings. | Your Android version, Android Auto release and phone manufacturer. | Menus can differ; an older “Customize Launcher” path is not confirmed as a current universal option. |
If you want to launch an app that is not currently visible, start with the App Launcher. If you are trying to make a particular app appear in the shortcut area, that area may be based on recent use rather than a permanent preference.

Open the App Launcher on your car display
- Connect your Android phone to the vehicle and wait for Android Auto to load.
- On the car display, select the App Launcher control. Its icon and position vary by vehicle interface, but it is the documented route to the available Android Auto apps.
- Choose the app you need from the launcher. Android Auto may restrict some interactions while the vehicle is moving.
Android Auto’s launcher is not a mirror of every app installed on your phone. It is a filtered list of apps that have Android Auto support and are allowed to appear in the car interface.
If you cannot identify the launcher control, look for the vehicle interface’s grid or app-list button rather than assuming the first screen is the complete list. Automakers place controls differently, and the same Android Auto software can look different on different displays. The important step is to open the app list supplied by Android Auto, not to search through the phone’s ordinary home-screen pages.
When the car is moving, select an app only when the interface permits the action. Some screens are intentionally simplified or locked while driving. Park before changing settings or working through a long list.
Can you drag apps into a new order?
Do not assume that pressing and dragging an icon will work. The current Google help material reviewed for Android Auto documents launcher access and the recent-apps area, but it does not provide a universal procedure for dragging, pinning or sorting launcher icons across all phones, Android Auto versions and vehicle displays.
A 2019 Google Android Auto Help Community response referred to a phone-side Customize Launcher setting. That post is useful historical context because it matches the wording many users still search for, but it is not a current settings manual. If your phone’s Android Auto settings still show that entry, follow the options presented there; if they do not, there is no documented, platform-wide replacement that you can safely enable by using a hidden gesture or a third-party utility.
How to check for a version-dependent launcher setting
- Open the Android Auto settings on the phone. The exact route varies by Android release and manufacturer; Android Auto may appear as its own Settings entry or inside connected-device settings.
- Look for a launcher, app-list or Customize Launcher option.
- If the option exists, read the controls shown on that specific phone. Use only the available controls; do not expect the 2019 community path to match your current menus.
- If no launcher customization option appears, use the App Launcher as provided and troubleshoot missing apps instead of trying to force an unsupported reorder.
A setting that changes the order on one phone is not proof that every phone supports the same behavior. Android version, manufacturer software, Android Auto release and the vehicle display can all affect which controls are exposed. Avoid instructions that promise a particular tap sequence without naming the version and device on which it was verified.
There is also a difference between changing order and making an app eligible. Rearranging an eligible icon cannot make an unsupported phone app appear, and installing an eligible app does not guarantee a permanent position in the recent-apps area. Check eligibility first, then look for an ordering control.
Why an installed phone app may not appear
There are three different situations that look similar on the car display: the app is not compatible with Android Auto, the app is compatible but temporarily unavailable, or the app is present but you are looking at the recent-apps area rather than the full launcher.
1. Confirm Android Auto compatibility
Google says Android Auto supports app categories such as music, messaging and news, among others. An ordinary Android phone app does not automatically become a car-display app. Check Google’s Android Auto-compatible app listing for the title you want.

Compatibility is an app-level requirement, not merely a matter of whether the app is installed, updated or visible on the phone. A web browser, game or other ordinary phone app can remain completely usable on the handset without being offered in the vehicle interface. Android Auto decides which supported categories and app experiences can be exposed while driving.
Google’s full Play Store view of compatible apps requires you to be signed in to a Google Account and to have personalization enabled. If the listing appears incomplete, verify those account conditions before concluding that the app is unsupported. A missing result in that view is not enough, by itself, to diagnose a vehicle or connection problem.

2. Check whether the app is disabled by Samsung battery management
Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out Samsung phones that temporarily disable apps that have not been used for a while. A disabled app can remain installed on the phone while disappearing from Android Auto’s launcher.
- Unlock the phone and open the missing app normally.
- Reconnect to Android Auto or reopen the App Launcher. Google says the app should appear the next time the launcher is opened if temporary disabling was the cause.
- If it is still missing, open the phone’s battery or app-management settings.
- Look for a setting labeled Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep, then adjust it for the affected app if your phone provides that control.
Samsung’s exact wording and menu location can vary by phone model and software version. If neither label exists, use the equivalent unused-app or sleep-management control shown on your device. Do not uninstall and reinstall an app as the first response when the phone may simply have put it to sleep.
Opening the app on the phone is a useful diagnostic step because it distinguishes a disabled app from an app that has never supported Android Auto. If the app returns after being opened and the launcher is reopened, battery management was the likely explanation. If it does not, return to the compatibility check rather than assuming the launcher order is hiding it.
3. Make sure you are checking the full launcher
The recent-apps area is intentionally narrower than the App Launcher. It is designed for recently used navigation, media and communication apps and may include one additional app. A compatible app that is not recent may therefore be absent from that shortcut area while still being available in the launcher.
Use the full launcher when testing whether an app is available. Use the recent area for quick access to apps Android Auto has selected from recent activity. Treating the latter as a fixed favorites list leads to the mistaken conclusion that Android Auto deleted or failed to install an app.
Launcher order versus recent-app behavior
These two surfaces answer different needs. A launcher is an inventory of eligible Android Auto apps. The recent-apps area is a convenience layer that reflects recent use and Android Auto’s interface rules. Consequently, repeatedly opening an app may make it more likely to appear among recent shortcuts, but that behavior is not the same as assigning it a permanent slot.
There is no documented guarantee that a chosen app will remain in a particular recent position, that every recent app can be pinned, or that the recent area can be expanded into a full custom grid. If your goal is reliable access, learn where the App Launcher control is on your vehicle display and use it while parked rather than relying on a shortcut that may change.

What you can customize besides icon order
Even when a particular Android Auto build does not expose manual launcher sorting, Google documents several interface adjustments that change how the display looks and behaves.
Dark theme
Android Auto includes a dark-theme option in its accessibility and display-related settings. It changes the visual treatment of supported Android Auto screens rather than adding or removing apps. It is therefore useful for comfort or readability, but it cannot bring an unsupported app into the launcher.
Bold text and outlined text
Bold text increases the weight of interface lettering. Outlined text adds a visual boundary that can improve separation from a complex background. These are presentation controls, not launcher-management controls. They change how labels are rendered, not which labels are present.
Reduced animations
The reduced-animations option limits motion effects in the Android Auto interface. It can make transitions less visually busy, but it does not change which apps are compatible or how a recent-apps list is selected.
Finding the accessibility controls
- Open Android Auto’s settings on the phone.
- Choose the accessibility or display section shown by your software.
- Enable dark theme, bold text, outlined text or reduced animations as needed.
- Reconnect to the vehicle if the display does not update immediately.
Google does not publish one tap-by-tap path that is identical for every phone. Android version, manufacturer software and Android Auto release can change the labels and nesting of these controls. If a label is absent, do not assume a hidden launcher feature is required; the option may simply not be exposed by that build.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Safety limits that affect the interface
Android Auto intentionally limits some interactions while the vehicle is moving. For example, typing messages while driving and scrolling through large lists can be blocked or restricted. These limits can make a control appear unavailable even when the app itself is installed and compatible.
- Change launcher or accessibility preferences while parked.
- If a list will not scroll or a text field will not accept typing, stop safely and try again when the vehicle is stationary.
- Do not treat a driving lockout as evidence that the app has disappeared or that launcher settings are broken.
- Do not attempt to bypass a safety restriction with an unofficial tool or an unsupported display modification.
A driving lockout and an unavailable app have different symptoms. If the app is listed when parked but an action is blocked in motion, the safety rule is working as intended. If the app is absent even while parked, continue with compatibility and phone-side availability checks.
A practical decision path for rearrangement problems
If the app is visible in the launcher but you want it higher
Check the phone-side Android Auto settings for a launcher customization option. If none is present, current official documentation does not establish a universal way to set a permanent order. Use the recent-apps area for frequently used apps when Android Auto places them there automatically, but do not treat that as a guaranteed pin.
If the app is missing entirely
Check compatibility first, then verify that the phone is signed in to the account and has personalization enabled if you are using Google’s full compatible-app Play Store view. On a Samsung phone, open the app on the phone and review unused-app battery controls.

If the app appears on the phone but not in the shortcut area
Open the App Launcher rather than relying on the recent-apps area. The shortcut area is not the complete inventory of Android Auto apps.
If only the appearance is difficult to read
Use Android Auto’s accessibility settings for dark theme, bold text, outlined text or reduced animations. These settings address readability and motion, not app eligibility.
If the launcher works but the settings look different from an online guide
Compare the guide’s date and device with your own software. The 2019 community reference to “Customize Launcher” may describe an older menu that is no longer exposed. Use the controls actually shown on your phone, and avoid assuming that a missing menu indicates a hardware failure.
Do you need a new cable, adapter or head unit?
No physical product is required to rearrange or troubleshoot Android Auto apps. The relevant checks are the launcher surface, app compatibility, phone account and personalization conditions, Samsung’s unused-app controls when applicable, and Android Auto’s accessibility settings. A replacement cable, wireless adapter or aftermarket display cannot turn an app that lacks Android Auto support into a compatible app, and the documented guidance does not establish such hardware as a fix for launcher ordering.

- Assuming every phone app belongs in Android Auto: compatibility is controlled by Android Auto’s supported-app ecosystem.
- Treating the recent-apps area as the launcher: recent use determines that area’s contents.
- Following an old menu path as if it were current: the 2019 “Customize Launcher” reference may not exist on your phone or Android Auto version.
- Trying to configure the interface while driving: safety lockouts can block typing, scrolling and other interactions.
- Assuming installation equals availability: a phone app can be installed yet unsupported or temporarily disabled.
- Blaming the cable or car display for an unsupported app: the documented checks point first to software compatibility and phone settings, not replacement hardware.
- Expecting accessibility settings to reorder icons: dark theme, text treatments and reduced animations change presentation only.
- Using an unofficial workaround to force a layout: no platform-wide, current procedure establishes that a hidden gesture or third-party utility can safely provide permanent ordering.
What a successful setup looks like
After troubleshooting, the expected result is straightforward: the App Launcher shows the Android Auto-compatible apps available to the connected phone; a recently used navigation, media or communication app may also appear in the recent-apps area; and accessibility choices affect the interface’s appearance. A permanent custom icon order is available only if your current phone and Android Auto build expose a corresponding launcher setting.
Because Google’s current documentation does not promise identical reordering controls on every device, the safest approach is to verify the controls actually displayed on your phone instead of relying on a fixed internet-era menu path. Keep the distinction between launcher inventory, recent shortcuts, compatibility and visual settings in mind, and most “missing app” reports become easy to classify.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I find the “Customize Launcher” option?
The term comes from a 2019 Google Android Auto Help Community response. Google’s current support material does not confirm that the setting remains available on every phone or Android Auto version, so it may be absent from your device.

Does installing an Android app automatically add it to Android Auto?
No. The app must support Android Auto and be exposed by the connected phone. Use Google’s compatible-app listing to check eligibility.

Why does an app appear on my phone but not in Android Auto?
It may be unsupported, temporarily disabled by phone battery management, or absent only from the recent-apps area. Check compatibility, open the app on a Samsung phone if applicable, and look in the full App Launcher.
Why is my app missing only from the Android Auto shortcuts?
The recent-apps area is separate from the full App Launcher. It is based on recently used navigation, media and communication apps, plus one additional app, so an eligible app can be absent there while remaining available in the launcher.
Can I permanently pin an Android Auto app to the first position?
Google’s current documentation does not establish a universal pinning or drag-and-drop procedure. Check your phone’s Android Auto settings for a version-dependent launcher option; if none exists, use the App Launcher and the automatically selected recent-apps area.
What should Samsung users do when an installed app disappears?
Open the app on the phone, then reopen Android Auto’s App Launcher. If it remains missing, check for battery settings named “Auto disable unused apps” or “Put unused apps to sleep.” Labels and locations vary by Samsung model and software.
Do dark theme or bold text change the app order?
No. Dark theme, bold text, outlined text and reduced animations are accessibility or presentation controls. They affect appearance and motion, not app compatibility, launcher eligibility or recent-app selection.
Why can’t I type or scroll while driving?
Android Auto applies safety restrictions to interactions such as typing messages and scrolling through large lists while the vehicle is moving. Park safely before changing settings or working through a long list.
Do I need to buy a new cable, adapter or display to rearrange apps?
No. Rearrangement and missing-app checks are software questions. The documented steps do not require replacement hardware, and hardware cannot make an unsupported app compatible with Android Auto.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use the car’s App Launcher as the authoritative list of Android Auto apps. Check compatibility and Samsung battery controls when an app is missing, treat recent shortcuts as automatically selected, and look for “Customize Launcher” only as a version-dependent phone setting. Google’s current guidance does not guarantee drag-and-drop ordering on every device, so never assume a fixed layout or buy hardware to solve a software limitation.
