Apple also says Siri AI lets you adjust the expressiveness and pace of Siri’s voice. What Apple’s published material does not show is any way to change the look or layout of the new Siri app itself. The app’s documented job is to start conversations and let you return to past ones, with conversation history synced through iCloud. Treat the app as a place to continue your conversations, not as a surface you can restyle.
What you can and cannot customize
The table below separates the controls Apple documents from the ones it has announced but not yet explained in its support material. Apple’s iPhone Siri guide is the reference for the iPhone paths; where Apple has not published a Mac path, the cell says so rather than guessing.

Check eligibility before you look for controls
Most “missing setting” problems come down to eligibility, not settings. As of Apple’s September 14, 2026 update, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI are listed for:
- iPhone: iPhone 16 models and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
- Mac: Mac models with an M1 chip or later.
- Language: Siri AI is in beta and starts in English. A supported language is required on an Apple Intelligence-enabled device.
- Region: Siri AI is initially unavailable on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS in the EU. Mac and Vision Pro users in the EU can access it when their language is supported. Apple says Siri AI is unavailable in China while it works through regulatory requirements.
Some Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models have daily usage limits. Apple says those limits can depend on the feature, request complexity, system demand, and policy, and it does not publish a fixed allowance. Do not plan around unlimited use.

iPhone: activation and voice trigger
Choose how Siri starts
- Open Settings > Siri > Requests.
- Choose the activation options your device offers. Depending on device, language, and region, these can include “Siri” or “Hey Siri,” the side button, and Type to Siri on supported Apple Intelligence devices.
The shorter “Siri” wake phrase is not available on every device or in every language, so if you do not see it, that is a limit of your setup rather than a missing toggle.
Retrain voice activation
- Open Settings > Siri > Requests.
- Turn the voice activation setting off, then back on.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete setup again.
Apple also notes that placing the iPhone face down prevents voice activation from responding. If Siri ignores you on a desk, that is expected behavior, not a fault.

Change Siri’s language
Go to Settings > Siri > Language to choose the language Siri uses. Apple notes that this language also applies to Maps, turn-by-turn directions, and Listen to Page in Safari, so changing it affects more than the assistant.
Change Siri’s voice
Go to Settings > Siri > Voice and choose a variation or voice. This is the documented way to change the voice Siri speaks with.

Adjust responses
Go to Settings > Siri > Responses. Apple documents options for spoken or silent responses, showing Siri captions, showing the request on screen, and automatically sending messages without confirmation. The automatic-sending option is not guaranteed to appear on every device. Apple’s iPhone Siri guide states: “The options you see depend on the version of Siri you’re using.” If an option is missing, check which Siri version your iPhone is running before assuming a fault.
Siri AI: voice expressiveness and pace
Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement states: “Users can customize the expressiveness and pace of Siri’s voice so it’s just right for them.” That is a capability statement. At the time of writing, Apple’s support material does not give the setting names, the menu location, or the steps to reach these controls on iPhone or Mac. If you cannot find them, the most likely reasons are that your device is outside the Siri AI eligibility list above, or that your language or region is not yet supported. Do not follow third-party instructions that name a specific menu for these controls until Apple publishes one.

The new Siri app and iCloud history
Apple describes the dedicated Siri app as the place to start a conversation or return to an earlier one. Apple says iCloud syncs that conversation history across your Apple products, so you can start a conversation on one device and pick it up on another. Apple’s announcement describes starting on Mac and continuing on iPhone, and its September update describes moving from iPhone to Mac. Apple presents this as a privacy claim; its published material does not describe how long history is kept, how it is encrypted, or which account settings govern it, so do not assume details beyond the sync behavior itself.

Mac: what Apple documents
On Mac, Siri AI is integrated into Spotlight and is available through system-wide context menus. Apple’s Mac material does not publish a click path for the expressiveness and pace controls, and it does not say which Mac models expose them. For Mac settings like activation, language, voice, and responses, the iPhone paths above are the documented reference; Apple’s Mac material does not confirm identical locations, so check the Siri section in System Settings on your own Mac before assuming a match.

Troubleshooting
- Siri AI does not appear on iPhone: Confirm you have an iPhone 16 or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, and that your Siri language is supported. Then confirm your region is not one where Siri AI is unavailable.
- Siri AI does not appear on Mac: Confirm the Mac has an M1 chip or later and that the language is supported. In the EU, Mac is eligible when the language is supported.
- Hey Siri or the Siri wake phrase is missing: The option depends on device, language, and region. Use the side button or Type to Siri on supported devices as alternatives.
- Siri stops responding when the iPhone is on a desk: Apple says a face-down iPhone prevents voice activation from responding. Turn the phone over.
- A response option is missing: Check the Siri version on your device, since Apple says visible options depend on it.
- Voice activation is unreliable: Turn voice activation off in Settings > Siri > Requests, turn it back on, and follow the prompts to retrain it.
Siri AI is a beta feature. Expect controls and availability to change as Apple updates it, and recheck Apple’s support pages before relying on a specific region or device.
