How to Customize Notification History and Controls on a Pixel Phone

Pixel can keep dismissed alerts for up to 24 hours, let you tune notifications app by app, and limit what appears on the lock screen. Notification history is disabled by default, so enable it before you need to recover an alert. Use Settings > Notifications > Notification history, then turn on Use notification history. Other controls are available from an individual notification or under the Notifications and Sound & vibration menus.

What Pixel notification history does

Notification history is a short-term list of notifications you dismissed. Google Pixel Phone Help says that, after you enable it, Pixel retains dismissed notifications from the previous 24 hours. It is useful when you swipe away an alert before reading it or want to identify which app sent a message.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

History is not retroactive. Turning it on today cannot recover notifications dismissed before activation. It also is not a permanent archive: entries fall outside the 24-hour window and disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

History and notification controls solve different problems. History helps you recover a dismissed alert; app controls decide whether an app may alert you; lock-screen settings control visible information; sound, vibration and flash settings change how an alert gets your attention.

Google Pixel 11 Pro XL- Unlocked Smartphone, Gemini - 512 GB - Obsidian | Android, Gemini Intelligence, 30+ hour battery, 6.8” Super Actua Display, Pixel HiLight, durable IP68 protection, 120x Zoom
  • Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]

Think of these as separate layers. A notification can be allowed by the app, hidden from the lock screen, delivered silently, and still recorded in history if you dismiss it. Changing one layer does not automatically change the others.

Enable notification history before you need it

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap Notification history.
  4. Turn on Use notification history.

The switch starts collecting dismissed notifications only after it is enabled. Existing notifications that are still in the shade remain available in the normal way, but previously cleared alerts cannot be reconstructed by enabling history.

Enable this setting as part of your initial Pixel setup rather than waiting for an important message to disappear. There is no separate backup or subscription involved; it is a built-in setting with a limited time window.

Find a notification you accidentally cleared

You can open the history list from Settings or from the notification shade.

Open history from Settings

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > Notification history.
  2. Review the dismissed notifications retained during the last 24 hours.
  3. Tap an item to open the app that sent it.

Open history from the notification shade

  1. Swipe down to show your current notifications.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the notification list.
  3. Tap History.
  4. Select the notification you want to investigate; Pixel opens its originating app.

If History is not shown, check that Use notification history is enabled. A newly enabled history list will not contain alerts dismissed earlier.

History is most useful for identifying the source of an alert and returning to that app. It does not turn a dismissed message back into a current notification, extend the 24-hour retention period, or create a searchable lifetime record.

Change notifications for one app

Pixel provides two entry points: an alert you can see now, or the complete app-notification list in Settings. Both routes lead to controls for that app. Turning off an app’s notifications is different from adjusting one notification category, such as messages, reminders or a particular channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust an app from an incoming notification

  1. When the app’s notification appears, touch and hold it.
  2. Use the controls that appear to change that app’s notification setting.
  3. Apply the change, then dismiss the notification or leave it in place.

This is the fastest option when the unwanted alert is in front of you. The controls shown can depend on the app’s notification categories.

Adjust an app from Settings

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
  2. Select the app you want to change.
  3. Toggle the app’s notifications or open its available categories for more specific choices.

Google’s app-notification screen can filter the list by Most recent, Most frequent, All apps or apps whose notifications are turned off. Filtering changes which apps are displayed; it does not itself change an app’s permission.

Use Most recent when you are responding to an alert you just saw, Most frequent when you are looking for a persistent source of interruptions, and All apps when an app is not appearing in a narrower view. The turned-off view is useful for checking whether a missing alert is simply disabled.

  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

Use categories instead of disabling everything

If an app sends several kinds of alerts, open the app’s notification categories and change only the category that is distracting. This preserves other categories, such as security warnings or direct messages. The exact category names are supplied by each app, so they differ between applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, an app might expose separate categories for conversations, reminders and promotions. Disable or quiet the unwanted category while leaving the category containing important account or safety messages enabled. If no categories are listed, the app may offer fewer controls and the app-level switch may be the broadest available option.

Control what appears on the lock screen

Lock-screen settings determine whether an alert is visible before the phone is unlocked and how much information it reveals. Google notes that labels and available choices vary by Android release and Pixel model.

Current Wallpaper & style route

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
  2. Tap Wallpaper & style.
  3. Open Lock screen.
  4. Swipe up to the lock-screen notification controls.
  5. Tap Notifications on lock screen.

Depending on your Pixel software, these controls can include the following options:

Control What it changes When to use it
Show or hide notifications Whether notifications appear on the lock screen at all. Hide all lock-screen alerts for maximum privacy, or show them for at-a-glance access.
Compact View or Full list How much space the lock-screen notification area uses and how alerts are presented. Choose Compact View for a smaller presence or Full list for more visible detail.
Viewed notification icons Whether icons for notifications you have already viewed remain visible. Keep the lock screen cleaner or retain a visual reminder.
Silent notifications Whether notifications classified as silent can appear on the lock screen. Show low-priority information without sound, or hide it from the lock screen.
Sensitive content Whether private text and details are displayed while the phone is locked. Hide message previews on a shared or visible phone; show them only if your surroundings are private.

Find the privacy setting in Settings

Some Pixel versions expose a direct path through Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen. The same area may include Show sensitive content. If your menus do not match, search Settings for lock screen notifications; the search result usually leads to the current location for your model and Android version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lock-screen visibility does not change whether an app is allowed to send notifications. It changes what is shown while the device is locked. For example, hiding sensitive content can leave an alert visible without displaying its private message text.

Choose the setting according to the information your lock screen may expose. A full list with sensitive content is convenient when the phone stays in a private room. Compact View or hidden sensitive content is safer when the device is on a desk, in a car, or used around other people. You can preserve the alert’s existence without revealing its message.

Change notification sounds, vibration and flash alerts

Set the default notification sound

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration.
  3. Tap Notification.
  4. Choose the sound you want as the default notification tone.

This changes the general notification sound. It does not necessarily override a sound assigned to an individual app category.

Set a sound for one app category

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
  2. Select the app.
  3. Tap Notification categories.
  4. Choose the category you want to customize.
  5. Tap Sound and select the tone for that category.

Category-level settings are the appropriate choice when one type of alert should sound different from the rest of the app’s notifications. Set the default first, then use categories for exceptions; otherwise it can be difficult to tell which setting is responsible for a tone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust vibration strength

Open Settings > Sound & vibration > Vibrations & haptics to adjust notification vibration strength. The controls shown can vary by Pixel model and Android release.

Use a camera-light or screen flash

Open Settings > Notifications > Flash notifications. Pixel can use the camera light, the screen, or both, depending on the options offered by your software. Flash alerts can help when sound is muted or you may not feel vibration.

Google’s sound-help documentation identifies some related sound-exposure controls as Android 15-and-later features. Treat those extras as version-specific rather than assuming every Pixel has them.

Sound, vibration and flash are attention methods, not permission controls. You can keep an app enabled and make it quieter, give one category a distinctive sound, or use a visual flash without allowing additional apps to interrupt you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix missing or delayed alerts

If an app is not alerting, check the app permission first, then investigate interruption and battery-saving settings. Google identifies Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery as settings that can silence, stop or delay some notifications.

1. Confirm the app is allowed to notify

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
  2. Find the app using the list or a filter.
  3. Make sure its notification switch is enabled.
  4. Open the app’s categories and confirm that the relevant category is also enabled, if categories are listed.

If the app is missing from the expected filter, switch to All apps. An app whose notifications were turned off can be located with the corresponding off-app filter.

2. Check Do Not Disturb

Do Not Disturb can silence most notifications. Review whether it is currently active, scheduled, or configured with exceptions that exclude the app or notification type you need. Turn it off temporarily, or adjust its allowed-notification rules, to determine whether it is the cause.

3. Review Battery Saver

Battery Saver can stop or delay some notifications while it conserves power. Check whether it is enabled when alerts fail, then test the app again after changing the mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Review Adaptive Battery

Adaptive Battery can delay some app activity to reduce power use. If alerts arrive late rather than never, compare behavior with the battery-saving setting changed and decide whether timely notifications are more important than the additional power savings.

5. Test one change at a time

After each adjustment, send yourself a test alert or wait for the next expected notification. Changing the app permission, Do Not Disturb and both battery modes simultaneously makes it difficult to identify which setting solved the problem.

Separate “no alert” from “late alert.” A disabled app category or Do Not Disturb commonly explains silence, while Battery Saver or Adaptive Battery can explain delivery that eventually appears. Checking the settings in this order avoids changing battery behavior when the actual problem is a disabled app permission.

Choose the setting that matches your goal

Your goal Use this control Path
Recover an alert you dismissed Notification history Settings > Notifications > Notification history
Stop one app from interrupting you App notification switch Settings > Notifications > App notifications > app
Silence only one type of alert Notification category App notifications > app > Notification categories
Hide private previews while locked Lock-screen sensitive-content control Wallpaper & style > Lock screen > Notifications on lock screen, or Settings search
Make every notification louder or different Default notification sound Settings > Sound & vibration > Notification
Give one app category its own tone Category sound Settings > Notifications > App notifications > app > Notification categories > category > Sound
Rely on light instead of sound Flash notifications Settings > Notifications > Flash notifications

Do not use history as a substitute for an app’s notification permission, and do not hide lock-screen previews expecting the app to stop sending alerts. Each control acts at a different point in the notification process.

Important limits and privacy considerations

  • Enable history before an alert is dismissed; activation cannot retrieve earlier notifications.
  • History covers dismissed notifications from the last 24 hours, not an unlimited record.
  • Anyone who can unlock or otherwise access your phone may be able to inspect the history list, so use lock-screen privacy settings and device security appropriate to your situation.
  • Hiding notifications on the lock screen does not stop the app from sending them; it changes their locked-screen visibility.
  • Turning off an app’s notifications is broader than changing one category. Use categories when you need some alerts from the app but not others.
  • Menu names and feature availability can change between Android releases and Pixel models. When a path differs, use Settings search for the distinctive phrase, such as notification history or lock screen notifications.
  • A history entry can identify the originating app, but it does not guarantee that the app’s content remains available or that opening the entry will reproduce the original screen.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Enable Use notification history so future dismissed alerts can be found.
  2. Review App notifications and disable only apps or categories that should not interrupt you.
  3. Set lock-screen visibility and sensitive-content behavior based on who can see your phone.
  4. Choose a default sound, then assign category-specific sounds where distinctions matter.
  5. Set vibration strength or flash notifications if sound alone is unreliable.
  6. If an expected alert is missing, check the app toggle, Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery in that order.

These controls are independent, so you can keep history enabled while hiding previews, allow an app to notify silently, or use flash alerts without changing the app’s permission.

Common setup scenarios

You want alerts but no private text on the lock screen

Leave the app notification switch enabled, open the lock-screen notification controls, and turn off sensitive content. The notification can remain visible as an alert while its message details stay hidden until the phone is unlocked.

You want messages but not promotional interruptions

Open the app in App notifications and inspect its categories. Disable or quiet the promotional category rather than turning off the entire app, provided the app exposes separate categories.

You dismissed an alert before enabling history

History cannot recover it. Enable Use notification history now so future dismissed alerts are retained for the next 24 hours.

You need an alert to stand out without making every app louder

Keep the general notification sound as it is and assign a different tone to the relevant app category through Notification categories > Sound. This changes that category rather than the whole phone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see a notification I accidentally cleared on my Pixel?
Yes, if notification history was already enabled. Open Settings > Notifications > Notification history, or swipe down, scroll to the bottom and tap History. Pixel keeps dismissed notifications for the previous 24 hours.

Why is my notification history empty?
History may have been disabled when the alert was dismissed, or the notification may be older than 24 hours. Turn on Use notification history for future alerts; enabling it does not populate earlier entries.

How do I change notification settings for one app?
Touch and hold one of that app’s notifications and use the controls shown, or go to Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select the app and change its switch or categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I stop one kind of notification without blocking the whole app?
Usually, yes. Open the app’s Notification categories and change the category that is distracting. Category names and availability depend on the app.

Will hiding a notification on the lock screen stop the app from notifying me?
No. Lock-screen controls change what is visible while the phone is locked. To stop delivery, change the app-level notification setting or a notification category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover a dismissed notification if history was off?

No. Pixel only starts recording dismissed notifications after you enable Use notification history, and it retains them for up to 24 hours.

Where are per-app notification controls?

Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications and select the app, or touch and hold one of its current notifications.

How can I protect notification privacy on a lock screen?

Use Notifications on lock screen to hide notifications, choose Compact View, hide silent or viewed icons, and turn off Show sensitive content as needed.

What should I check when alerts are missing?

Check the app and category switches first, then Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery. Test after each change.

The Bottom Line

Enable Use notification history before you need it, because Pixel cannot recover alerts dismissed earlier and keeps history for only 24 hours. Use app-level or category controls to decide what can interrupt you, lock-screen settings to protect private previews, and Sound & vibration or Flash notifications to choose how allowed alerts reach you. If delivery fails, check the app permission, Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery in that order.
