Set up noise and ambient sound in Sony | Sound Connect
- Install and open Sony | Sound Connect on your smartphone, then connect your WH-1000XM5.
- Open My Device and go to the sound controls. Choose Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound, or adjust the related settings available for your device.
Sony says the app has no PC version. You can configure certain features—including Ambient Sound Control and touch sensor functions—in the smartphone app, and those settings carry over when the headphones connect to a PC. Menu names and available functions can vary by model and operating system.

How do I switch between noise canceling and ambient sound?
For a quick manual change, press the narrow Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button beside the power button on the left earcup. Each press alternates between Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound Mode, with a notification sound. If Adaptive Sound Control is on, turn it off first when you want the headphones to stay in the mode you choose. Sony explains that disabling it stops activity scenes from being detected automatically, so you can switch modes manually.

In Sound Connect, open Ambient Sound Control and select Ambient Sound. Sony’s over-ear instructions provide a level range of 1–20: higher numbers allow more surrounding sound through. Adjust the level while listening to find the balance you want.

Auto Ambient Sound can adjust pickup in response to surrounding noise. You can change its sensitivity in the app. This is separate from choosing whether Adaptive Sound Control changes your listening mode according to activity.
Choose manual or automatic mode switching
Adaptive Sound Control can select Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off for detected activities such as standing still, walking, running, or riding a train. If a mode changes without you pressing the button, this is the first setting to check.

- For a steady mode: turn Adaptive Sound Control off, then select a mode with the left-earcup button or in the app.
- For activity-based changes: leave Adaptive Sound Control on and choose the mode you want for each activity in its settings.
- For place-based automation: Sony also describes Automatic switching at My Places, which uses your smartphone’s location permissions. Enable it only if you want location-based switching and are comfortable granting that access.
How do I use the WH-1000XM5 touch controls?
The touch sensor is on the right earcup. Sony’s instructions describe these gestures:

Use Quick Attention
Cover the touch panel with your hand to let outside sound through temporarily—for example, to hear a brief announcement or speak to someone without removing the headphones. Quick Attention remains active only while you are touching or covering the panel.
Enable or activate Speak-to-Chat
Speak-to-Chat detects when you speak and lowers the volume or pauses or mutes audio. Sony says it is disabled by default. On the WH-1000XM5, you can enable it in Sound Connect under My Device → Device settings → Sound, or hold two fingers on the touch panel until voice guidance says “Speak-to-chat activated.” Detection may fail if your speech is too short or quiet; the feature ends after 30 seconds without detecting the wearer speaking.

Can I reassign or disable a touch gesture?
Sony’s app overview says touch sensor functions can be changed, but available menus vary by model. The general touch instructions do not establish which specific gestures can be reassigned or disabled on the WH-1000XM5. Check the model-specific WH-1000XM5 Help Guide for the options available to your headphones rather than assuming a gesture can be changed.

Why does noise canceling keep changing or feel weak?
The mode changes unexpectedly
Check Adaptive Sound Control and its activity settings. When enabled, it can change Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound based on detected activity. If you want to choose modes yourself, disable it and use the left-earcup button.

Noise canceling seems weak
Confirm that Noise Canceling is selected, then check Adaptive Sound Control to see whether an automatic setting is changing the mode. Sony notes that the perceived effect can vary with the type of noise and may seem less pronounced in a quiet environment. Its noise-canceling troubleshooting instructions provide additional checks.
