MPC-HC puts nearly every practical customization in a small set of Options pages. Use Options > Player > User Interface for themes and display elements, Options > Player > Toolbar and Toolbar Layout for the control bar, Options > Subtitles for subtitle search and rendering, and Options > Player > Keys for keyboard and mouse bindings. Playback speed is handled separately under Play > Playback rate, with the increment set at Options > Playback > Speed step.
The exact labels can vary between builds. The instructions below follow the MPC-HC 2.8.1 documentation and the current project guidance; check the MPC-HC releases page if your installed version is newer or older.

Start by identifying your MPC-HC version
Version matters most for toolbar artwork and secondary subtitles. The project’s current release documentation identifies version 2.8.1, while the newer toolbar customization format applies to MPC-HC 2.5.3 and later. You can still change button order and ordinary interface settings without creating artwork, but a toolbar image made for an older format is not supported by the newer format.
To check what you are running, open MPC-HC’s Help menu and choose its version/about entry. If a menu path in this guide is missing, compare your build with the project’s release notes and README before changing other settings.

Change the theme and on-screen controls
Choose a light, dark, or classic interface
Open Options > Player > User Interface. This is the main page for the player’s visual style. Select the modern light theme, modern dark theme, or classic theme, then apply the change. The same page also exposes common display controls such as seekbar height, toolbar button size, status-bar details, and seekbar preview behavior, as documented by the project.
Theme choice affects readability and glare rather than video quality. A dark interface is often easier in a dim room; a light interface can be easier to read beside other bright Windows applications. If you use a high-resolution display, increase the toolbar button size and seekbar height together so the controls remain easy to target.
Hide controls in a window
For a cleaner picture when MPC-HC is windowed, use Options > User Interface > Hide Windowed Controls. This removes or suppresses the normal on-screen controls while the player is not fullscreen. The README documents this path separately from the broader player-interface settings, so the exact location may look slightly different in your build.
Use this option when you want a video-only window. If you frequently operate the player with a mouse, leave the controls visible or assign accessible keys first; hiding controls can make occasional commands less obvious.
Adjust the seekbar and status information
On the User Interface page, review the seekbar and status-bar options after changing the theme. A taller seekbar gives a larger mouse target, while seekbar preview options determine how much visual feedback you receive when moving over the timeline. Status-bar details control the information shown beneath the video. Keep only the details you use if you want the smallest possible interface.
Customize the toolbar
Pick a toolbar design
Toolbar appearance and toolbar contents are two different settings. First open Options > Player > Toolbar and choose the toolbar design supplied by your MPC-HC build. This page selects the visual set; it does not determine which commands appear or their order.

Choose buttons and their order
Open Options > Player > Toolbar Layout. Add the commands you use, remove commands you never touch, and arrange the remaining buttons in the order that matches your workflow. Place high-frequency controls—such as play/pause, stop, seek, or subtitle actions—near the pointer’s usual resting area. A compact layout reduces mis-clicks on a small window, while a fuller layout can be useful on a couch-based PC controlled from a distance.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The project’s current toolbar customization guidance applies to MPC-HC 2.5.3 and newer. Toolbar images created for older versions are not supported by the newer image format. If your layout changes but a custom image does not appear, verify the version and the image specification before troubleshooting the button order. See the project’s toolbar customization instructions.
Create a custom toolbar image (for designers)
Ordinary users do not need to create image files; the built-in designs and Toolbar Layout page are sufficient. If you are designing a complete toolbar, the project specification requires a set of SVG or PNG assets in several sizes:
| Asset size | Use |
|---|---|
| 24 × 24 pixels | Small toolbar buttons |
| 32 × 32 pixels | Standard toolbar buttons |
| 48 × 48 pixels | Large toolbar buttons |
| 64 × 64 pixels | Extra-large toolbar buttons |
| 16 × 16 pixels | Optional small assets |
The specification defines four rows covering light and dark themes and enabled and disabled states. Install the finished toolbar design in the MPC-HC installation directory’s Toolbars folder. Follow the project’s toolbar design specification for the required file structure and state arrangement; do not assume an image made for an older release will be accepted.
Fix a toolbar that looks wrong
- Buttons are in the wrong order: return to Options > Player > Toolbar Layout; image files do not control the command sequence.
- The custom image is ignored: confirm that the build is 2.5.3 or newer and that the files follow the current SVG/PNG specification.
- Some states look identical: check that the light/dark and enabled/disabled rows were supplied for every size you use.
- Controls are too small: increase toolbar button size in Options > Player > User Interface, then recheck the layout.
Configure subtitle search and display
Search manually with the D key
Press D while a video is open to search for subtitles manually. This is useful when you want to choose a specific language or release instead of searching every file automatically.

Enable automatic subtitle search
For automatic searches, open Options > Subtitles > Misc and enable the automatic subtitle-search option. The exact controls presented there depend on the subtitle service and your MPC-HC build. In MPC-HC 2.8.1, the release notes describe configuring OpenSubtitles.com credentials from that service’s context menu on the same page. Service quotas and account requirements can change, so confirm the current terms with the service before assuming that an account increases a limit. The 2.8.1 release information is available through the official releases page.

Automatic search is convenient for a library with consistent file names, but it can return a subtitle in the wrong language or for a different cut of the video. Use manual search when synchronization, language, or edition matters more than speed.
Understand secondary subtitles in MPC-HC 2.8.1
MPC-HC 2.8.1 adds support for loading a secondary subtitle track. It is intended for a second text translation or another text-based reference, not for combining arbitrary subtitle formats.
- Only an external, text-based SRT file is supported as the secondary track.
- Formats that can contain explicit positioning, including SSA, PGS, and VobSub, are excluded.
- The secondary subtitle is rendered at the top of the video.
- Subtitle-delay adjustments apply to both subtitle tracks.
- The secondary track is not included in screenshots.
These constraints make dual subtitles predictable: one track remains in the normal subtitle position while the additional SRT track appears at the top. If a second subtitle does not load, first verify that it is an external SRT file and that your build is 2.8.1 or later; changing the delay will move both tracks, not just one. Do not convert a positioned format to SRT expecting its original layout to survive, because SRT does not carry the same positioning information.

Choose a subtitle workflow
| Goal | Best approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Find one subtitle occasionally | Press D and search manually | You must select the result for each video. |
| Search a whole library automatically | Enable automatic search in Options > Subtitles > Misc | Results can vary by language, release, and service limits. |
| Display two text translations | Load a normal subtitle plus a secondary external SRT | The secondary track appears at the top and is omitted from screenshots. |
| Use positioned bitmap or advanced subtitle formats as the second track | Not supported by the 2.8.1 secondary-track feature | SSA, PGS, and VobSub are excluded. |
Customize keyboard and mouse shortcuts
Find a command instead of memorizing the list
Open Options > Player > Keys. This page contains the keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions, and the table includes a search box. Type part of a command to find it, select the existing binding, and assign the key or mouse action you want. Searching is safer than scanning a long list because similarly named commands can be separated in the table.
When choosing a replacement, avoid a key you already use in another command. Check the table for the old binding first, then assign the new one and verify the command with a short test video. Keep frequently used actions on keys you can reach without looking; reserve complex combinations for occasional commands.
Useful documented defaults
The project README documents two examples that help explain MPC-HC’s control model:

- 10 Meters (33 Feet) Wireless Range: Enjoy trouble-free connection in the largest room and enjoy the TV control with the keyboard on the couch. (The range might be affected by the wireless environment)

- Ctrl + mouse wheel: seek through the current video.
- PageUp/PageDown: jump to the adjacent file in the folder.
If either action conflicts with your mouse software or keyboard layout, use the Keys search box to locate the command and choose a different binding. These are examples of the existing mapping, not requirements; you can replace them if another arrangement is more accessible. The full key and mouse configuration is described in the project README.
Design bindings for accessibility
- Keyboard-first setup: assign transport, seeking, subtitle, and playback-rate commands to keys that can be reached without a mouse.
- Mouse-first setup: keep pointer gestures for seeking and navigation, but leave a keyboard fallback for commands that are difficult to target.
- Living-room setup: place the most important controls on a small wireless keyboard or keyboard with a touchpad, then use the toolbar layout to expose only the commands you cannot remember.
- Shared computer: prefer obvious, reversible bindings and avoid replacing common Windows shortcuts unless you have a clear reason.
There is no universal “best” map. The useful choice depends on reach, vision, whether the player is near a desk or television, and whether other people use the same profile.
Change playback speed and pitch behavior
Set the current playback rate
Open Play > Playback rate and choose the speed for the current session. This menu is separate from the shortcut editor, so changing a key binding does not itself change the available rate values.
Change the speed increment
Open Options > Playback > Speed step to set how much the rate changes each time you increase or decrease it. A smaller step gives precise control for language study or dialogue; a larger step lets you move quickly through long recordings. Choose a step that matches the task rather than assuming the default is ideal.
Keep voices from sounding higher or lower
The project notes that MPC Audio Renderer or SaneAR provides automatic pitch correction during speed changes. If voices change pitch when you alter the rate, check which audio renderer is active and use one of those renderers where appropriate. Pitch correction changes the tonal effect of the speed adjustment; it does not make a low-quality recording clearer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a phone or browser as an alternative controller
MPC-HC 2.8.1 adds a remote page in its web interface for controlling the player from a phone or browser on the local network. This is a separate control method, not a keyboard shortcut. It can be useful when the PC is connected to a television and the keyboard is out of reach.

Because the remote is reachable through the local network, treat it as a convenience for a trusted network. Confirm that the computer and controller are on the same local network and follow the web-interface settings shown by your build. The release notes identify the feature, but they do not establish that it is available across every older version; check the release page if your build predates 2.8.1.
Build a complete customization in a sensible order
- Check the version. Confirm whether you are on 2.8.1 or another release so you know whether secondary subtitles and the current toolbar format are available.
- Set the interface. Choose the light, dark, or classic theme at Options > Player > User Interface. Adjust button size, seekbar height, status-bar details, and preview behavior.
- Reduce visual clutter. Enable Hide Windowed Controls if you want a video-only window and can operate the player through keys or another controller.
- Select a toolbar design. Use Options > Player > Toolbar for the visual design.
- Arrange commands. Use Toolbar Layout to add, remove, and reorder buttons. Only create a custom image if the built-in designs cannot meet your needs.
- Choose subtitle behavior. Decide between manual search with D, automatic search in Options > Subtitles > Misc, or a second external SRT track where your version supports it.
- Map controls. Search Options > Player > Keys for the commands you use most and assign keyboard or mouse actions.
- Set speed behavior. Choose a rate from Play > Playback rate, then adjust Options > Playback > Speed step if the jumps are too large or too small.
- Test the result. Open a short video, try every new binding, seek with the toolbar and keyboard, load subtitles, and change speed. Testing each category separately makes a conflicting setting easier to identify.
Common problems and the quickest fixes
A menu item is missing
Menu organization changes between releases. Compare your build with the current README and release notes, then look for the equivalent page under Options. Do not assume a feature documented for 2.8.1 exists in an older installation.
The secondary subtitle is invisible
Confirm that the file is external SRT, not SSA, PGS, or VobSub. Remember that the secondary track is drawn at the top, so it will not appear in the normal lower subtitle position. Also check that the delay you changed applies to both tracks by design.

This is expected when the missing text is from the secondary track: MPC-HC 2.8.1 does not include the secondary subtitle in screenshots.
Automatic subtitles stop working or return unexpected results
Try a manual search with D to separate a service problem from a player setting. In Options > Subtitles > Misc, review the selected service and credentials. Service quotas and account policies are controlled by the service and can change independently of MPC-HC.
A shortcut does nothing
Search for the command in Options > Player > Keys, check whether another action already owns the key, and test the binding while the video window has focus. For mouse actions, verify that the gesture is not being intercepted by another utility.
Playback speed changes the voice
Check the selected audio renderer. MPC Audio Renderer or SaneAR is the project-documented route to automatic pitch correction during speed changes.
Which control method should you use?
| Control method | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard shortcuts | Fast, precise, and usable without moving a pointer. | Requires remembering bindings and resolving conflicts. |
| Mouse and toolbar | Visible commands and easy discovery. | Needs pointer access and can consume window space. |
| Local-network web remote | Lets a phone or browser control a distant PC. | Available as a 2.8.1-era feature and dependent on local-network access. |
Choose the method that matches where you watch and who operates the player. A desk setup often favors keys and a compact toolbar; a television setup may favor a touchpad-equipped keyboard or the local web remote. Keep at least one visible or discoverable fallback so you are not locked out after hiding controls or changing a shortcut.
