To customize game settings, first switch the TV to the HDMI input your console or PC is using, then open the brand’s gaming menu: Samsung’s Game Mode Settings or Game Bar, LG’s Game Optimizer or Game Dashboard, or Sony’s Game content type or Picture mode. The exact path depends on the model and software version, and automatic low-latency or VRR features can limit which picture controls you can change.
Before changing settings: select the right HDMI input
Connect the console or PC to the TV by HDMI, then select that HDMI input as the source. Samsung and LG both make the active source part of their setup instructions; settings may not apply to the device if the TV is showing another input. Some models also require an enhanced HDMI setting for features supported by the TV and connected device.

Menu names vary with model year, region, and software. The routes below are manufacturer-documented examples, not universal paths. If a label is missing, check the official manual for the TV’s exact model number rather than assuming the feature is unsupported.
Samsung: turn on Game Mode and use Game Bar
Samsung’s Australia support guidance gives different routes by model year. With the console or PC connected and its HDMI source selected, try the route that matches your TV:

Samsung says a detected console may activate Game Mode automatically, while a PC may require manual activation. If the menu is unavailable, confirm that the correct HDMI input is selected and consult the model’s manual. The instructions are from Samsung Australia, so local menu labels may differ. Samsung’s Game Mode instructions provide the model-year examples.
Open Game Bar to adjust available gaming options
On supported TVs, once Game Mode is On or Auto, hold the remote’s Play/Pause button to open Game Bar. Depending on model and year, it can expose Game Picture Mode, input-lag status, Game Motion Plus, sound output, and display information such as FPS, HDR, or VRR. Screen ratio controls may be available when the source is a PC. These are not guaranteed on every set; Samsung documents newer features such as AI Auto Game mode and Minimap Auto Detection only for supported models. See Samsung’s Game Bar guide for the feature scope.

Check enhanced HDMI settings only when needed
If a supported gaming signal or feature is not available, check whether Input Signal Plus is enabled for the HDMI port in use. Samsung’s UHD gaming guidance says the setting was called HDMI UHD Color on 2018-and-older models, and compatibility varies by model. Treat HDMI 2.1 features as a compatibility check across the TV, source, port, and cable—not as proof that a new cable or TV is needed just to switch Game Mode on. Samsung’s HDMI gaming guidance describes the relevant checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLG: customize Game Optimizer and Game Dashboard
On supported webOS versions, open Settings > All Settings > General > Game Optimizer and turn it on. LG’s older webOS 5.0 instructions instead use Picture > Additional Settings > Instant Game Response; enable the HDMI port connected to the console. Some generations may also require the relevant HDMI deep-color setting. See LG’s console setup instructions for version-specific steps.

Use the dashboard and supported gaming controls
On supported sets, Game Dashboard can surface gaming status and settings while you play. LG’s instructions describe selecting Game Optimizer picture mode and enabling its functions for the dashboard. VRR/G-Sync options and tone-mapping controls also vary by model; LG documents VRR/G-Sync within Game Optimizer for supported TVs and describes it as requiring HDMI and Game Optimizer screen mode in that setup. Avoid applying a universal HDR or tone-mapping value: the right options depend on the TV, console, and game. LG’s Game Optimizer guidance explains the documented controls.
If picture adjustments are unavailable
LG says picture-quality adjustments may be disabled while ALLM is set to Auto. On a compatible console and TV, turning ALLM off may allow manual adjustments; the trade-off is giving up that automatic low-latency switching behavior. Find ALLM in Game Optimizer on supported models, and use the TV and console manuals to confirm the available choices. LG’s support page covers the relationship between ALLM and picture controls.

Sony: set Content type or Picture mode to Game
Sony’s route depends on the BRAVIA family. For the series covered by its instructions, press Quick Settings > Content type > Game. On other Google TV models, the documented route is Quick Settings > Image Settings > Display & Sound > Picture > Picture mode > Game, with some variation by model. On sets that include A/V Sync, Sony’s input-lag guidance describes setting it to Auto. These controls are model-specific; consult Sony’s Game mode instructions if your menu differs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Sony says HDMI games on the listed newer BRAVIA families use low-latency mode when Content type is set to Game. This is Sony’s stated behavior for those models, not a measured lag figure or a guarantee for every TV. A compatible TV may also switch to Game automatically when the console uses ALLM. Sony notes that a VRR HDMI signal format can keep picture mode restricted to Game. If the control appears fixed, check the console’s ALLM or VRR output and the TV’s HDMI signal-format instructions for the exact model before treating it as a fault. Sony’s PS5 and ALLM guidance describes these constraints.
What to do when settings are locked or missing
- Confirm the source: select the HDMI input the console or PC is actually connected to.
- Check for automatic mode switching: ALLM may put a supported TV into Game mode and, on LG models with ALLM Auto, may prevent picture-quality adjustments.
- Check VRR and HDMI signal format: Sony documents VRR cases where picture mode is restricted to Game; feature availability depends on the TV and source.
- Verify support for the specific input: enhanced HDMI settings and gaming options can be port- and model-dependent. Enable a setting only when the TV’s instructions call for it.
- Use the exact model manual: Samsung, LG, and Sony labels and paths change by generation, region, and software.
Which settings should you customize?
Start with options the TV actually exposes, such as picture mode, motion processing, sound output, or gaming status. Samsung’s Game Bar, LG’s Game Optimizer and Dashboard, and Sony’s Picture or Content type menus do not offer identical controls. The manufacturer guidance does not establish one brightness, contrast, or motion setting that is best for every TV, room, console, and game. Make changes one at a time so you can tell which control affected the picture or feel.
