On your PS5 home screen, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). There you can change Volume (Speaker for Controller), Vibration Intensity, and Trigger Effect Intensity. These controls affect different hardware behaviors: the controller speaker, general controller vibration, and adaptive resistance in supported games.

Adjust one setting at a time, return to the game or system screen, and judge the result before changing another. If you use a DualSense Edge, its custom-profile controls are in a separate menu.

What each DualSense control changes

The three requested options are grouped together on a standard DualSense controller, but they do not control the same effect. Knowing the distinction makes troubleshooting much faster: a quiet controller speaker is not a vibration problem, and a trigger that feels ordinary is not necessarily evidence that vibration is disabled.

PS5 setting Hardware behavior it changes When it is noticeable
Volume (Speaker for Controller) Sound produced by the small speaker built into the controller. Games, system prompts, chat or other audio routed to the controller speaker.
Vibration Intensity The strength of the controller’s vibration and haptic feedback during supported activities. Gameplay events and, when enabled separately, some PS5 interface interactions.
Trigger Effect Intensity The resistance and tension you feel in the L2 and R2 adaptive triggers. Only in games that implement the adaptive-trigger feature. PlayStation describes this as experiencing the feature “in games that support it.”

Speaker volume does not raise or lower your television, soundbar, headset, or general PS5 audio level. Vibration intensity does not alter trigger resistance, and trigger-effect intensity does not change ordinary vibration. Treat each as an independent control when you are narrowing down a comfort or audio issue.

  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Change the three settings on a standard DualSense

  1. Turn on the PS5 and sign in to the profile using the controller you want to configure.
  2. From the home screen, select the Settings icon in the upper-right corner.
  3. Choose Accessories.
  4. Select Controller (General).
  5. Locate Volume (Speaker for Controller), Vibration Intensity, and Trigger Effect Intensity.
  6. Open one control and select the desired level. Depending on the control and current system software, the available choices can include an off or weakest setting through stronger levels.
  7. Back out of Settings, then test the change in the game or screen where you noticed the problem. Adjust the next control only after you know what the first change did.

PS5 applies these controller preferences system-wide unless a particular game provides its own in-game control or overrides the effect. The exact wording or arrangement can change with PS5 system software, but the documented location is Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).

Use a controlled test instead of changing everything at once

For a reliable comparison, begin with the current settings and change only one item. For example, lower the speaker volume, return to the same scene, and listen. Then restore it if the result was unrelated and test vibration. Finally, test trigger effects in a situation that actually uses L2 or R2 resistance. This prevents a game that lacks one feature from making a working setting look broken.

Write down or remember the level you started with if you are experimenting. A return to the same menu lets you reverse a change without guessing which control was responsible. If several people use the console, this approach also makes it easier to restore a comfortable shared baseline.

Lower or mute the controller speaker

Open Volume (Speaker for Controller) and move the level down if spoken prompts, game effects, or other sounds from the controller are distracting. Set it to the lowest available level or off when you do not want audio from the controller itself. This leaves the television or headset volume unchanged because the option targets only the DualSense speaker.

If you hear no difference, first confirm that the activity sends audio to the controller. A title may route all of its sound to the television or headset, while another uses the controller for selected effects. The volume control cannot force a game or system action to use the speaker; it only sets the level when audio is routed there.

Make vibration weaker or stronger

Open Vibration Intensity and select the level that feels comfortable. A lower value reduces the strength of vibration and haptic pulses; a higher value makes them more pronounced. Turning vibration off removes that physical feedback, but it does not by itself disable adaptive trigger resistance.

Judge this setting during a repeatable event, such as a supported gameplay impact or other moment that normally produces a pulse. A quiet menu is not a useful vibration test. If gameplay vibration works but the PS5 interface remains still, use the separate navigation setting described below.

Change adaptive-trigger resistance

Open Trigger Effect Intensity and choose the preferred level. A stronger level makes supported games apply more resistance as you press L2 or R2; a lower level makes the triggers easier to pull. Setting the control to off removes the adaptive effect at the system level. Nothing will happen in a game that does not support adaptive triggers, regardless of the selected intensity.

Trigger-effect intensity changes resistance, not the trigger assignment, the game’s aiming sensitivity, or the point at which an input is registered. If you want to change those behaviors, use the title’s own controller or accessibility options when they are available.

Choose settings for comfort, quiet, or awareness

There is no universally correct level. The useful choice depends on what you are trying to solve and whether the game uses the feature. A setting that is helpful in a solo game may be distracting during a long session or in a shared room.

If vibration feels tiring or uncomfortable

  • Reduce Vibration Intensity first, because this changes the strength of ordinary controller vibration.
  • If your fingers or hands still tire while pressing L2 or R2, reduce Trigger Effect Intensity separately. Trigger resistance is a different mechanism.
  • For a completely feedback-free setup, turn both controls off rather than assuming that lowering one also disables the other.
  • Retest after each change. A game can use a strong vibration pulse and a separate trigger effect during the same event, so changing only one may leave the other sensation intact.

If you want to notice game events without loud sound

Keep the controller speaker at a comfortable level and use vibration or supported trigger effects as physical cues. Because games choose which effects to implement, one title may provide strong feedback while another provides little or none with identical console settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is also a practical way to separate sensory channels. You can lower the speaker while retaining a moderate vibration level, or reduce vibration while leaving a supported trigger effect available. The three controls do not have to be set to matching levels.

If the controller is disturbing other people

Lower Volume (Speaker for Controller) for sounds emitted near your hands. This does not mute the television or headset, so change those devices separately if they are the source of the noise. If the disturbance is a mechanical feeling rather than sound, reduce vibration and trigger effects independently.

If you want the easiest possible trigger pull

Set Trigger Effect Intensity to its lowest level or off. This affects adaptive resistance only; it does not change the travel, sensitivity, or button mapping of L2 and R2. A game that does not use adaptive triggers will feel the same at every intensity because there is no effect for the setting to modify.

Gameplay haptics and PS5 navigation haptics are separate

PS5 has another setting that is easy to confuse with gameplay vibration. To control haptic feedback while moving around the console interface, go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers and find Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This option covers feedback generated by interface actions such as moving focus, changing a setting, receiving a notification, or using the on-screen keyboard. It does not replace the gameplay controls in Settings > Accessories > Controller (General), and it is not a control for adaptive trigger effects in games.

PlayStation states that console-navigation haptic feedback is available only when a vibration-intensity level is selected. If vibration intensity is disabled, navigation haptics cannot operate independently. The navigation feature applies to DualSense, DualSense Edge, and PS VR2 Sense controllers.

Configure navigation feedback

  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Choose Controllers.
  4. Open Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation.
  5. Turn the option on or off according to whether you want tactile responses from the PS5 interface.
  6. If the option is unavailable or produces no feedback, return to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Vibration Intensity and select a vibration level.

Use this menu when the problem occurs while browsing the PS5 itself. If the problem occurs only during a game, begin with the three controls under Controller (General) and then check the game’s own options.

How the settings interact

The settings can be combined, but they do not cascade into one another. A few examples make the boundaries clear:

  • Turning Vibration Intensity off does not automatically turn off adaptive trigger resistance.
  • Turning Trigger Effect Intensity off does not silence the controller speaker or remove vibration.
  • Lowering Volume (Speaker for Controller) does not reduce a haptic pulse.
  • Turning off Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation affects interface feedback, not the game’s vibration or trigger effects.
  • A supported game can use one feature without using the others. For example, it may provide vibration but no adaptive trigger effect.

When testing, identify the physical result first: sound, a general vibration pulse, resistance in L2/R2, or a PS5 interface tap. Then open the matching setting rather than changing all three.

DualSense Edge: use custom profiles instead

A DualSense Edge has a profile workflow that should not be confused with the standard DualSense menu. On PS5, open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.

An Edge custom profile can include its own vibration-intensity and trigger-effect-intensity choices. You can also assign profile shortcuts, allowing you to switch configurations during gameplay rather than returning to the main Settings menu each time.

Set up an Edge profile

  1. Open Settings, then select Accessories.
  2. Choose DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.
  3. Select Custom Profiles.
  4. Create or edit a profile.
  5. Set the profile’s vibration intensity and trigger-effect intensity.
  6. Save the profile and, if useful, assign a shortcut for switching to it while playing.

The ordinary DualSense instructions do not create these switchable profiles. If you own the standard controller, use Controller (General) instead. The Edge profile workflow is useful when you want one combination for a high-feedback game and another combination for a long or comfort-focused session.

Common mistakes and quick checks

Changing the wrong volume

The label specifically says Volume (Speaker for Controller). It is not the master PS5 audio control. If the television, soundbar, or headset is too loud, adjust that device or its PS5 audio destination separately. Conversely, changing the TV volume will not make a controller speaker quieter.

  • Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.

Testing in an unsupported scene

Trigger effects and vibration are event-dependent. A game may use adaptive resistance only while aiming, braking, drawing a bow, or performing another particular action. A menu, cutscene, or unrelated level may not provide a useful test. Try a known supported situation before concluding that the setting had no effect.

Expecting every game to behave alike

Individual games determine whether trigger effects are used and which events generate feedback. One title can support both haptics and adaptive triggers, another can support only vibration, and a third can offer its own in-game intensity or accessibility switch. The console setting cannot add adaptive triggers to a title that does not implement them.

Confusing navigation haptics with gameplay vibration

If focus changes, notifications, or the on-screen keyboard produce no tactile response, check Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation under Accessibility. If gameplay is also silent, check Vibration Intensity under Controller (General). Both contexts need to be considered separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot when a change seems to do nothing

The trigger effect does not appear

  • Confirm that the game supports adaptive triggers. The console setting cannot add the feature to a game that does not implement it.
  • Check the game’s own controller or accessibility options; a title may provide a separate switch or intensity control.
  • Test a known supported gameplay situation rather than a menu or scene that does not use trigger resistance.
  • Make sure you changed Trigger Effect Intensity, not Vibration Intensity. They are independent.
  • If the effect appears in one supported title but not another, the difference is likely the games’ implementations rather than the controller menu.

Vibration is missing in the PS5 interface

Gameplay vibration and interface haptics use different contexts. Open Settings > Accessibility > Controllers and check Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation. This feature requires a selected vibration intensity, so also verify the setting under Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).

The controller speaker is still quiet or silent

  • Verify Volume (Speaker for Controller) rather than the television or headset volume.
  • Test an activity that actually sends audio to the controller speaker; not every game or system action does so.
  • Check the game’s audio-routing options if only one title is affected.
  • If other controller sounds work but one game is silent, compare that game’s behavior with another title before changing the system level again.

Only one game behaves differently

Game-specific implementation takes precedence over what you expect from a setting label. A title can support vibration but not adaptive triggers, use effects only during particular events, or provide its own in-game intensity and accessibility controls. Compare the behavior in another supported title before assuming the controller setting failed.

The menu label is not exactly where expected

PS5 interface labels and arrangement can change with system software. Start from the documented path, Settings > Accessories > Controller (General), and look for the three named controls. For interface haptics, use Settings > Accessibility > Controllers. Do not substitute the Edge profile path unless the controller is a DualSense Edge.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Decide whether the issue is sound, vibration, trigger resistance, or feedback while navigating the PS5.
  2. Open the menu that controls that specific behavior.
  3. Change only one level.
  4. Return to the same game event or interface action.
  5. Check whether the title supports the feature and whether its own options alter it.
  6. Keep the setting if it solves the problem; otherwise restore it and test the next control.
  7. If discomfort is involved, stop using the feature rather than repeatedly testing stronger levels.

This process avoids a common false diagnosis: changing vibration because a trigger feels stiff, or changing the controller speaker because the television is loud. Each symptom has a different control.

Health and safety

Sony’s DualSense instruction manual says: “Do not use the vibration or trigger effect features if you have any ailment or injury to the bones, joints, or muscles of your hands or arms.” It also advises that people with such an ailment or injury should not play titles using these features unless they have set the functions to Off.

Stop playing if feedback causes pain, numbness, or worsening discomfort. Turning off vibration and trigger effects is the direct way to remove those functions; lowering their intensity may not be sufficient for an existing injury. If you are unsure what is safe for you, follow medical advice rather than relying on a controller setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the DualSense vibration, trigger, and speaker controls on PS5?

From the home screen, open Settings, choose Accessories, and select Controller (General). The three controls are Volume (Speaker for Controller), Vibration Intensity, and Trigger Effect Intensity.

Does controller speaker volume change my TV or headset volume?

No. Volume (Speaker for Controller) changes only sound from the DualSense speaker. Adjust the television, soundbar, headset, or other audio destination separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do trigger effects still feel normal after I changed the intensity?

Adaptive trigger effects work only in games that support them and only during events where the game uses them. Check the game’s own controller options and test a known supported situation.

Does turning vibration off also disable trigger resistance?

No. Vibration Intensity and Trigger Effect Intensity are separate. Turn both off if you need neither type of physical feedback.

How do I turn off haptics while browsing the PS5?

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers and turn off Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation. This interface feature also requires a selected vibration-intensity level.

Can a DualSense Edge save different vibration and trigger settings?

Yes. Open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles. Profiles can include vibration and trigger-effect intensity, and shortcuts can be assigned for switching profiles during gameplay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if vibration or trigger effects hurt my hands?

Stop using the features and set vibration and trigger effects to Off. Sony’s controller manual advises against using them with an ailment or injury affecting the bones, joints, or muscles of the hands or arms.

Why does one game have effects while another does not?

Individual games decide whether to implement vibration and adaptive triggers, which events use them, and whether separate in-game controls are available. Console settings cannot add a feature that a game does not support.

The Bottom Line

For a standard DualSense, use Settings > Accessories > Controller (General): speaker volume controls controller audio, vibration intensity controls haptic strength, and trigger-effect intensity controls adaptive L2/R2 resistance in supported games. Use Settings > Accessibility > Controllers for PS5 navigation haptics, and use DualSense Edge > Custom Profiles only when you have an Edge controller. Change one setting at a time, test it in a supported context, and turn vibration or trigger effects off if they cause pain.
