Use the PS5’s built-in controller settings to change these effects: open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General), then adjust Vibration Intensity and Trigger Effect Intensity independently. Set either control to Off when you do not want that effect. Trigger effects only operate in games that support them. Haptics while moving through the PS5 interface use a separate accessibility switch at Settings > Accessibility > Controllers.
What the two intensity controls do
The DualSense exposes two different types of feedback, so changing one does not automatically change the other. Sony lists both controls in the general controller settings for the PS5.

| Setting | What you feel | Where it applies | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vibration Intensity | Rumble and haptic vibration from the controller | Supported games and other controller feedback that uses vibration | It is separate from trigger resistance and from the console-navigation switch |
| Trigger Effect Intensity | Resistance or changing tension in the L2 and R2 triggers | Games that implement DualSense trigger effects | A game must support the feature; the console cannot add effects to an unsupported title |
| Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation | Haptic feedback while selecting items and moving around the PS5 interface | Console navigation only | It is an accessibility setting and is available only when a Vibration Intensity level is selected |
Sony’s general controller settings documentation identifies the first two controls as separate settings. Its accessibility documentation explains that console-navigation haptics are controlled separately. Therefore, turning vibration down in a game does not necessarily change the feel of moving through the PS5 menus, and enabling console-navigation haptics does not rewrite how a game implements its own effects.

Change vibration and trigger effects on a standard DualSense
These steps apply to the regular DualSense wireless controller connected to a PS5. You do not need a special controller or an extra application.
#1 Best Overall
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Open Controller (General).
- Highlight Vibration Intensity and choose the level you want. Select Off if you want no vibration.
- Highlight Trigger Effect Intensity and choose its level separately. Select Off if you do not want resistance or other trigger effects.
- Leave the settings screen. The selected controller settings are used by the PS5 when the controller and game support the relevant feature.
Changing Vibration Intensity does not change Trigger Effect Intensity. If you want a quiet controller but still like trigger resistance, turn vibration off or down while leaving trigger effects enabled. If you want normal rumble but easier trigger pulls, make the opposite adjustment.
Turn off only vibration
Follow the same path and set Vibration Intensity to Off, leaving Trigger Effect Intensity at your preferred level. This is useful when rumble is distracting but you still want supported games to communicate tension through L2 and R2.
Turn off only trigger effects
Set Trigger Effect Intensity to Off and leave Vibration Intensity unchanged. Games can continue to provide vibration while the triggers pull normally.

Set both controls to Off. This removes the controller effects governed by these intensity settings, although a game can still have its own separate accessibility or controller options. Sony’s settings page uses the name Trigger Effect Intensity; use that exact label when looking for the control.
Enable or disable haptics while navigating the PS5
If the controller vibrates when you move across the home screen, settings, or other console menus, use the navigation-specific control rather than changing a game setting.
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select Controllers.
- Turn Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation on or off.
This switch covers navigation of the PS5 interface. It does not provide a universal replacement for a game’s haptic design and does not force trigger effects in games that do not support them. Sony states that the option is available only when a Vibration Intensity level is selected. If you cannot select the navigation option, return to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) and choose a vibration level instead of Off, then check the accessibility menu again. The feature and its scope are described in Sony’s PS5 accessibility settings support page.
Why a PS5 game may have no trigger effects
A missing effect does not necessarily mean the DualSense is faulty. Trigger effects are implemented by individual games, and Sony describes the feature as available only in supported games.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Check game support first
Look at the game’s listing and its documented features. PlayStation Store Accessibility Tags can identify listed accessibility features, including DualSense controller options, but a tag does not prove that every possible controller adjustment is available in every title. Sony’s overview of these features is available on its PS5 and PS4 accessibility page.
Confirm the console intensity setting
Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) and verify that Trigger Effect Intensity is not set to Off. If it is enabled and the game supports trigger effects, the title can use the feature. The setting controls intensity; it cannot add trigger programming that the game does not contain.
Check for a physical trigger stop on DualSense Edge
On a DualSense Edge, the L2 and R2 trigger-stop sliders can prevent effects even when the console and game support them. Sony’s instruction manual states: “When the stop sliders are set to short or medium, trigger effects will not be available.” Move the sliders to the position that permits the full trigger travel before testing again. This is a physical limitation, not a software intensity choice.
Separate a game’s design from a controller problem
If trigger resistance works in one supported game but not another, the difference is likely the title’s implementation or support. If it fails in every supported game, check the console setting and, for an Edge, the trigger-stop position. Do not assume that ordinary vibration and trigger effects are the same diagnostic: a controller can rumble while a game provides no trigger resistance, because they are separate features.
DualSense Edge: save different intensity setups in profiles
The DualSense Edge is not required to change vibration or trigger-effect intensity. Its additional benefit is that you can save combinations of controller settings in custom profiles and switch between them for different uses.
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Accessories.
- Select DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.
- Open Custom Profiles.
- Create or edit a profile and save the desired vibration and trigger-effect intensity values.
Sony’s DualSense Edge profile instructions describe profiles that can retain these intensity settings along with other controller customizations. The Edge instruction manual also documents saved stick sensitivity, button assignments, vibration strength, and related options.
Understand the trigger-stop trade-off
The Edge’s physical sliders shorten the L2 and R2 stroke. That can make a trigger feel faster for ordinary input, but Sony states that the short and medium positions make trigger effects unavailable. If a profile is intended for a game that uses adaptive resistance, use the trigger-stop position that leaves trigger effects available. If you choose a short or medium stop, the intensity setting cannot override that mechanical restriction.

| Use case | Recommended approach | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| One controller, occasional adjustments | Use the standard DualSense general controller settings | Vibration and trigger intensity must be changed separately |
| Different settings for different games | Use DualSense Edge custom profiles | Profile storage does not bypass game support requirements |
| Edge with short or medium trigger stops | Use the physical stop only for games that do not need trigger effects | Those positions make trigger effects unavailable |
Accessibility, comfort and safety
Vibration and trigger resistance can be useful feedback, but they are not appropriate for everyone. Sony’s DualSense instruction manual says: “Do not use the vibration or trigger effect features if you have any ailment or injury to the bones, joints, or muscles of your hands or arms.” The same guidance says that someone with an ailment or injury should not play titles using these features unless the functions are set to Off. Stop using the features if they cause discomfort or pain; if discomfort persists, consult a doctor. This is manufacturer safety guidance, not individualized medical advice. The wording appears in Sony’s DualSense instruction manual.

For a less intense experience, reduce one effect rather than disabling everything immediately. For example, leave vibration at a low level and turn trigger effects off if repeated resistance bothers your hands. Conversely, if vibration is the problem but trigger pulls are comfortable, disable vibration alone. The independent controls let you make that distinction without changing unrelated controller behavior.
Practical settings by situation
| Situation | Vibration Intensity | Trigger Effect Intensity | Additional action |
|---|---|---|---|
| You want the quietest, least active controller | Off | Off | No extra action; game-specific controls may still exist |
| Rumble is distracting, but you want trigger resistance | Off or a lower level | Your preferred level | Use the general controller settings |
| Trigger resistance is uncomfortable, but rumble is fine | Your preferred level | Off or a lower level | Use the general controller settings |
| You want feedback in the PS5 menus | A selected level | Independent | Enable Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation |
| An Edge profile should use trigger effects | Profile preference | Profile preference | Do not set L2/R2 stops to short or medium |
What the console settings cannot control
- They cannot make an unsupported game generate trigger effects.
- They cannot make console-navigation haptics behave like a game’s haptic design.
- They cannot override the DualSense Edge’s short or medium trigger-stop restriction.
- They do not guarantee that every game exposes the same accessibility choices; support varies by title.
A game may also provide its own controller or accessibility options. Treat those as title-specific controls rather than evidence that the PS5-wide settings are broken. The PS5 controls establish the controller’s permitted intensity, while the game decides whether and how to send supported effects.

This adjustment is a built-in PS5 function. A standard DualSense that is paired with the console is enough; you do not need to buy a DualSense Edge, install an app, or connect a computer. The Edge is an optional upgrade for people who want saved profiles, stick and button customization, and physical L2/R2 trigger stops. Buying a different controller will not make an unsupported game gain trigger effects.
Choose the standard DualSense if you only need one global intensity setup or occasional changes. Consider the Edge when you regularly switch between different controller layouts or intensity combinations. Remember that its short and medium trigger-stop positions disable trigger effects, so the extra hardware introduces a compatibility trade-off rather than universally improving every game.
How to test a change without misdiagnosing it
- Change one control at a time so you know which setting affected the result.
- Test vibration in a title or interface action that normally produces rumble.
- Test trigger effects only in a game documented as supporting them.
- If you use an Edge, confirm the L2/R2 stops are not set to short or medium.
- For menu feedback, test the PS5 home screen separately after enabling the console-navigation option.
This sequence distinguishes four different causes: a disabled intensity value, a game without support, an Edge mechanical stop, or a navigation-only setting being tested in the wrong place.
Menu wording and software-version caveat
The support pages used here are Sony pages localized for Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. Sony can revise menu wording or move an option in a future PS5 system software update. If a label is not in the exact location described, search the Settings categories for the same names: Vibration Intensity, Trigger Effect Intensity, and Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation. The functions remain conceptually distinct even if a later update changes their presentation.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- For ordinary intensity changes, use Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
- Adjust Vibration Intensity and Trigger Effect Intensity independently.
- For home-screen or menu feedback, use Settings > Accessibility > Controllers.
- Remember that console-navigation haptics require a selected vibration level.
- Confirm that the game supports DualSense trigger effects.
- On a DualSense Edge, move L2/R2 stop sliders away from short and medium when trigger effects are required.
- If pain or persistent discomfort occurs, turn the features off and follow the safety advice in Sony’s controller manual.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off DualSense vibration on PS5?
Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General), set Vibration Intensity to Off, and leave Trigger Effect Intensity unchanged if you still want trigger resistance.
How do I disable adaptive trigger effects?
In Settings > Accessories > Controller (General), set Trigger Effect Intensity to Off. Supported games can still provide vibration unless you also turn Vibration Intensity off.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why are my PS5 adaptive triggers not working?
Check that the game supports DualSense trigger effects, that Trigger Effect Intensity is not Off, and, on a DualSense Edge, that the L2/R2 trigger stops are not set to short or medium.
Why can’t I find Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation?
Sony says this option is available only when a Vibration Intensity level is selected. Choose any vibration level other than Off under Controller (General), then return to Accessibility > Controllers.
Do I need a DualSense Edge to customize these effects?
No. The standard DualSense has the required intensity controls. The Edge is optional for custom profiles and physical trigger-stop adjustments.
Does changing PS5 vibration intensity affect every game?
It sets the controller’s permitted vibration intensity, but each game decides whether and how it sends supported feedback and may provide separate accessibility controls.
Can a PlayStation Store Accessibility Tag guarantee trigger effects?
No. Tags identify listed accessibility features, including possible DualSense options, but they do not establish that every controller feature or adjustment is present in every title.
Are trigger effects and vibration the same feature?
No. Vibration controls rumble or haptic movement in the controller, while trigger effects change resistance or tension in L2 and R2. They have separate PS5 controls and can be enabled independently.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) to set Vibration Intensity and Trigger Effect Intensity separately. Use Settings > Accessibility > Controllers for haptics while navigating the PS5, remembering that a vibration level must be selected. If trigger effects are missing, verify game support and, on DualSense Edge, avoid the short and medium trigger-stop positions.
