You can change Bing’s visual theme, homepage elements, SafeSearch filtering, suggestions, location, language, and personalization from Bing settings. For the page theme, open Settings and Quick Links in the upper-right corner, choose Appearance, and select Light, Dark, or System default. The other controls are separate: homepage toggles change what appears on Bing’s home page, while SafeSearch changes explicit-content filtering rather than the color scheme or ordinary ranking.
What you can customize in Bing
“Search results appearance” can mean several different parts of the Bing experience. Bing separates visual styling from homepage content, safety filtering, and relevance controls. Knowing which setting changes which part prevents you from looking for a theme option in the wrong menu.

| Area | Available controls | What changes | What does not change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display theme | Light, Dark, System default | The color treatment and display style of Bing pages | The ranking or wording of ordinary web results |
| Bing homepage | Menu bar, news and interests, homepage image | Elements shown around the Bing home page | The underlying ranking of web results |
| SafeSearch | Strict, Moderate, Off | How explicit text, images, and videos are filtered | The visual theme |
| Search experience | Location, language, voice search, search suggestions, personalization | Some inputs and relevance signals used while searching | A guarantee that every result will appear in a particular position |
Microsoft notes that labels and placement can change as Bing’s interface evolves. You may see the settings control described as a gear icon, Settings and Quick Links, or a hamburger menu. If the wording differs slightly, look for the same categories: Appearance, homepage customization, More, or search preferences.
Change Bing between light, dark, and system themes
Microsoft Support documents three appearance choices. Light uses a bright interface, Dark uses a darker display style, and System default lets Bing follow the display preference configured on your device or operating system. Microsoft describes the choice as a way to select the style that feels best for your eyes.
#1 Best Overall
Steps on Bing.com
- Open Bing in your browser.
- In the upper-right corner, open Settings and Quick Links. Depending on the current layout, this may appear as a settings or gear icon, or as a hamburger menu.
- Select Appearance.
- Choose Light, Dark, or System default.
- Return to the search page and check that the interface has changed. If you selected System default, change your device’s system theme to test whether Bing follows it.
Which theme should you choose?
| Choice | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Bright environments or users who prefer a traditional white interface | It does not change the search index, ranking, or SafeSearch behavior. |
| Dark | Low-light use or users who prefer a darker display style | It changes presentation only; page content and result ordering are separate settings. |
| System default | People who want Bing to match their device’s light/dark preference | The result depends on the operating system or device setting and may change when that setting changes. |
If the page does not change immediately, reload Bing after saving the selection. A browser, account, or regional variation can also present the option in a different location. Microsoft does not state that every locale, device, or account shows an identical menu.
Theme selection is useful when several people use one computer, but remember that it is normally a presentation preference, not a security control. A dark page does not hide queries from browser history, an employer, a school network, or a Microsoft account. Use the privacy controls described below when your objective is managing stored activity.
Customize the Bing homepage
Bing’s homepage has its own customization area. These switches control what surrounds the search box on the home page; they are not controls for the ranking of ordinary search results.
Show or hide homepage elements
- Open Bing and select the settings icon or Settings and Quick Links.
- Find Customize your homepage.
- Review the available switches for the menu bar, news and interests, and the homepage image.
- Turn each element on or off according to how minimal or information-rich you want the home page to be.
- Close the settings panel or use its save/confirmation control if one is shown, then return to the homepage to verify the result.
What each homepage switch does
- Menu bar: controls whether the homepage navigation menu is displayed.
- News and interests: controls the related news or interest content shown on the homepage.
- Homepage image: controls the large image displayed on the Bing homepage.
These controls should not be confused with search-result filters. Hiding the homepage image does not remove images from image-search results, and hiding news and interests does not disable the web search index. Microsoft warns that homepage features may not be available in every country or region, so an absent switch is not necessarily a browser problem.
If you want a less distracting start page, turn off the news and interests module and the homepage image while leaving the menu bar available for navigation. If you prefer Bing’s visual discovery features, leave those elements on and use the theme setting separately. Each switch has a narrow purpose, so changing one does not silently change the others.
Set SafeSearch to control explicit content
SafeSearch is the main Bing setting for changing what types of explicit material can appear. It has three levels, and each level handles text, images, and videos differently.
| SafeSearch level | Explicit text | Explicit images | Explicit videos | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strict | Filtered | Filtered | Filtered | Strongest filtering, especially for shared devices or younger users |
| Moderate | Not filtered | Filtered | Filtered | Microsoft’s default in most countries or regions |
| Off | Not filtered | Not filtered | Not filtered | No SafeSearch filtering for explicit content |
Change the SafeSearch level
- Open Bing.
- Open the Bing settings control in the upper-right corner.
- Choose More.
- Select the SafeSearch preference you want: Strict, Moderate, or Off.
- Save the setting if Bing displays a save button, then run a new search to confirm that the preference is active.
Microsoft says Moderate is the default in most countries and regions, but local norms and laws can produce a different default. For users under 18, SafeSearch may be set to Strict automatically to comply with local law. Regional availability can also affect which choices or controls are shown.

When SafeSearch keeps returning to Strict
An automatic Strict setting can reflect age-related or legal requirements rather than a failed save. A school, workplace, family administrator, browser policy, or network administrator can also impose filtering. If you manage the device or network, check its policy before repeatedly changing the Bing preference. If you do not manage it, the administrator’s setting may take precedence over the choice in your personal Bing menu.
SafeSearch is a content filter, not a promise that every result is harmless or that every explicit item will be identified perfectly. Choose the level that matches the user and local requirements, then test with a fresh search. Do not infer that a light or dark theme has any effect on filtering.
Enforce Strict SafeSearch across a network or PC
Microsoft provides an administrator-level method for forcing Strict SafeSearch. The approach maps Bing to strict.bing.com through DNS so searches use the Strict filtering endpoint. This is different from a normal user changing the setting in Bing’s web interface.
Why Microsoft recommends a CNAME
Microsoft recommends using a DNS CNAME rather than mapping directly to a fixed IP address because the IP address may change. A CNAME keeps the administrative mapping tied to the documented host name instead of requiring an update whenever Microsoft changes infrastructure.

- Apply the DNS mapping only if you control the relevant network or PC configuration.
- Test the policy on every browser and device type used on the network.
- Document the change so another administrator understands why Bing resolves through the Strict host.
- Microsoft’s guidance also discusses the host used by the Edge sidebar; follow the current Microsoft administrator instructions for that component rather than assuming the ordinary Bing mapping covers every Edge surface.
- Do not present this as a personal appearance setting. It is a network or device policy that affects users subject to that DNS configuration.
A DNS policy can affect everyone using the configured network, including guests, and can override an individual’s preferred SafeSearch level. Keep the CNAME record under change control, explain its purpose to support staff, and re-test after DNS or browser changes. The administrator instructions are the appropriate reference for exact implementation details; ordinary users should use the Bing menu instead.
Adjust settings that affect the search experience
Not every useful customization is visual. Bing says location and language are among the factors it considers when determining result relevance. Search suggestions, voice search, and personalization can also change what you see while entering or reviewing a query.
Location and language
Location and language settings help Bing interpret a query and select geographically or linguistically relevant results. If results consistently emphasize the wrong country, city, or language, inspect those settings before assuming that the theme or SafeSearch choice is responsible. The exact controls and labels can vary by region and account state.

When diagnosing an unexpected result page, change one setting at a time and run a new query. This makes it easier to tell whether location, language, or personalization changed the experience. A theme change alone should not be used as evidence that relevance settings changed.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Search suggestions and autosuggest
Bing includes a setting to switch search suggestions, also called autosuggest, on or off. Turning suggestions off removes the predicted terms shown while you type; it does not erase the web results returned after you submit a query. If suggestions are distracting or reveal previous interests on a shared screen, disable them in Bing settings while leaving the main search function enabled.
Browser address-bar predictions are a separate feature. If words continue to appear before you submit a query, determine whether they come from Bing’s page or the browser’s own address bar, then adjust the corresponding control.
Voice search
Voice search is another search-experience control. Its availability and exact placement can depend on the device, browser, permissions, and region. Changing voice-search availability affects how you enter queries, not the visual Light or Dark theme.
Personalization and search history
A Microsoft account provides additional controls over search history and related data through the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard. These privacy controls are separate from the Appearance menu. Use the dashboard when you want to review or manage stored search activity; changing the display theme alone does not manage that data.
On a shared device, review both Bing’s account controls and the browser’s local history settings. Turning off autosuggest can reduce on-screen disclosure while typing, but it is not the same as deleting stored history. The Privacy Dashboard is the relevant place to review or manage account-associated search activity.
Appearance settings versus result ranking
The most common misunderstanding is expecting a visual customization to alter which pages Bing ranks first. Appearance changes the interface style. Homepage switches change the content surrounding the homepage search box. SafeSearch filters explicit material. Location, language, suggestions, and personalization can influence the search experience and relevance, but none of these options promises a particular ranking for every query.

| If you want to… | Use this area |
|---|---|
| Make Bing darker or lighter | Settings and Quick Links → Appearance |
| Match Bing to your device theme | Appearance → System default |
| Remove the homepage picture | Customize your homepage → Homepage image |
| Hide homepage news or interests | Customize your homepage → News and interests |
| Filter explicit text, images, and video | More → SafeSearch → Strict |
| Stop predicted queries while typing | Bing settings → search suggestions/autosuggest |
| Manage stored search activity | Microsoft Privacy Dashboard |
Think of these as separate layers. First choose how Bing should look. Next decide what should appear on the homepage. Then set content filtering and relevance-related preferences. Keeping the layers separate avoids the common mistake of changing a color setting when the real issue is a regional result, a prediction, or a content filter.

The Appearance option is missing
- Open the upper-right settings control and look for a hamburger menu or Settings and Quick Links; the label may differ from the one shown in another Bing layout.
- Check that you are on Bing’s own page rather than a browser search overlay or an embedded search box.
- Consider regional, device, account, and product-version differences. Microsoft does not promise identical menus for every user.
- Reload Bing after opening the settings panel. If the control remains absent, use the options that are available in your locale instead of assuming that a hidden switch can be enabled manually.
The theme changes but the results look the same
That is expected. Light, Dark, and System default affect the display style, not the content or ranking of ordinary web results. To change filtering or relevance-related behavior, use SafeSearch, location, language, suggestions, or personalization settings instead.

A homepage switch has no visible effect
Verify that you are viewing the Bing homepage, not a results page. The menu bar, news and interests, and homepage image controls apply to the homepage. Also check whether the feature is offered in your country or region; Microsoft says some homepage features are not available everywhere.
SafeSearch does not stay at the selected level
- Check whether local law or age settings require Strict mode.
- On a managed computer or network, ask the administrator whether a policy or DNS mapping is enforcing Strict SafeSearch.
- Remember that Microsoft’s default can differ by country or region, so a new browser or location may start with a different level.
- Save the setting and run a fresh search after changing it. A prior results page may not reflect the new preference until it is reloaded.
Suggestions remain after you switch them off
Confirm that you disabled Bing’s search-suggestion or autosuggest control, rather than a browser’s own address-bar suggestions. Those are separate features. If the predictions are coming from the browser, adjust the browser setting as well.
System default does not match the device
Check the device’s own light or dark preference, then reload Bing. System default is designed to follow the operating system setting; it is not a third custom color scheme. If Bing still displays differently, account, browser, or regional differences may be involved.
A setting is locked or unavailable
Look for signs of a managed device, family account, school or workplace network, or local legal requirement. An administrator-level DNS policy can enforce Strict SafeSearch, and age-related rules can also limit choices. Regional availability explains why homepage controls or other options may not appear for every user.

How to verify a customization
- Change only one category at a time, such as Appearance or SafeSearch.
- Save the choice when Bing provides a save or confirmation control.
- Reload the homepage or start a fresh search rather than relying on an already open results page.
- For System default, change the device theme temporarily and see whether Bing follows it.
- For homepage controls, verify the result on Bing’s home page; for SafeSearch, verify with a new search.
- If the outcome differs on another device, check account status, region, browser, and network administration before assuming the setting failed.
A practical customization checklist
- Set Appearance to Light, Dark, or System default.
- Open Customize your homepage and decide whether the menu bar, news and interests, and homepage image belong on your start page.
- Choose a SafeSearch level appropriate to the user, device, and local requirements.
- Review location and language if results are not relevant to your country or preferred language.
- Turn search suggestions or voice search on or off according to how you enter queries.
- If you use a Microsoft account, review search history and related data in the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
- If a setting is absent or locked, check regional availability and whether an administrator or legal requirement controls it.
Microsoft’s current support guidance, retrieved October 13, 2026, is the best reference when labels differ from these paths. Bing can change its interface, and Microsoft explicitly warns that features and defaults vary by country or region.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make Bing dark mode?
Open Bing’s upper-right Settings and Quick Links menu, choose Appearance, and select Dark. You can instead choose System default to follow your device theme.
Can I change the appearance of ordinary Bing search results?
You can change the display style with Light, Dark, or System default, but those choices do not change ordinary result ranking or wording. Use location, language, suggestions, or personalization controls for search-experience changes.
How do I remove the picture from the Bing homepage?
Open Bing settings, find Customize your homepage, and turn off Homepage image. This affects the homepage picture, not images in image-search results.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the difference between Strict and Moderate SafeSearch?
Strict filters explicit text, images, and videos. Moderate filters explicit images and videos but not explicit text. Microsoft says Moderate is the default in most countries and regions, although local rules can differ.
Why can’t I turn SafeSearch off?
Age-related rules, local law, a family setting, or a school or workplace administrator may require Strict filtering. A network DNS policy can also enforce Strict SafeSearch for everyone using that network.
Does turning off search suggestions delete my search history?
No. The autosuggest control stops predicted terms while you type. Manage stored search activity separately through the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard, and check browser history controls if needed.
Why are Bing settings different in my country?
Microsoft says features, homepage controls, and SafeSearch defaults can vary by country or region because of availability, local norms, and laws. Device, account, browser, and product-version differences can also change labels or placement.
