Android Auto’s launcher is customized from your phone, not from the car screen. Open Settings, search for Android Auto (or go to Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto), select Customize launcher, hide entries you do not use, and drag the remaining entries into your preferred order. Exit and reconnect Android Auto before checking the result.
The launcher shows only apps and assistant actions that Android Auto supports; it is not a mirror of every app installed on your phone. Notifications are handled through Android Auto’s status area and notification center. Google documents assistant-activated actions, but its current public documentation does not establish a universal method for creating arbitrary custom shortcuts on every phone and Android Auto version.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Launcher entries: compatible apps and some assistant-activated actions. You can hide entries and change their order.
- Notifications: alerts and messages that Android Auto presents on the car display, in the status area, or in the notification center.
- Custom shortcuts: user-created launcher buttons or commands. Google’s current public guidance does not confirm a universal creation workflow for these on every Android Auto release.
This distinction matters because installing an Android app does not automatically add an icon to the car’s launcher, and rearranging launcher entries does not create a new assistant command. The available controls also depend on the Android Auto-compatible apps installed on the phone and, for some interface details, the dimensions of the vehicle display. Google describes the launcher as a vertically scrolling grid, but the exact placement and presentation can vary by vehicle screen. Google’s launcher documentation describes the supported customization model.
Before changing the order, decide which tasks you actually perform while driving. Music, messaging, navigation and news are among the supported categories Google describes. Keeping the most-used entries near the top reduces scrolling, while hiding duplicates makes the list easier to scan. The launcher preference is separate from the order of apps on the phone and from the order of recently used apps that Android Auto may surface elsewhere in its interface.
Reorder or hide Android Auto apps
Open Customize launcher on the phone
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Use Settings search for Android Auto. This is usually the fastest route when a manufacturer has moved the menu.
- If search does not find it, try Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto. Manufacturers and Android versions can use slightly different labels.
- Tap Customize launcher.
The settings page is on the phone even when Android Auto is currently running on the car display. If you cannot find the entry, search for “Android Auto” rather than looking only under an app-drawer or car-settings menu. Google documents this phone-settings route in its App launcher guidance.
You do not need to rearrange the list from the vehicle’s touchscreen, and looking through the car’s launcher for an edit button can waste time. Make the change on the connected phone, then refresh the session in the vehicle.
Hide entries you do not want
Inside Customize launcher, switch off the apps or options that should not appear in the car’s launcher. Hiding an entry changes its Android Auto launcher visibility; it does not uninstall the phone app or remove its phone notifications.
Hide items that create visual clutter, duplicate a service you already use, or are not useful while driving. Keep any app you may need for navigation, communication, media, or another supported in-car task visible so it remains easy to reach without searching through the grid. If an option is an assistant action rather than an app, the same visibility control applies only when that action is listed on your device.
Change the order
Drag an app name or option to the position you want. Put the entries you use most often at the top of the launcher’s scrolling order. The order is a launcher preference, not a change to the app’s position on the phone’s home screen.
Because the launcher is a vertically scrolling grid, an item moved lower in the list may require additional scrolling before it is visible. A wide or unusually shaped vehicle display can change how many entries fit on a page, so an order that looks like a single row on one vehicle may appear across several rows on another.

Refresh the car display
- Leave the Customize launcher screen after saving your changes.
- Exit Android Auto or disconnect the phone from the vehicle.
- Reconnect or reopen Android Auto.
- Open the launcher and confirm that hidden entries are gone and the remaining entries follow the new order.
Google’s documented workflow requires exiting and restarting Android Auto for launcher changes to appear. If the old order is still visible, perform a complete disconnect and reconnect rather than judging the change while the existing session remains open. See the documented launcher steps.
If you changed several entries, verify the list after one full restart before troubleshooting individual apps. This separates a refresh problem from a compatibility problem: a correctly enabled app that still never appears in the settings list is different from an enabled app whose old position is simply cached on the car display.
Why an app is missing from the Android Auto launcher
First check compatibility
The launcher contains Android Auto-compatible apps, not every app installed on the phone. Google lists compatible categories such as music, messaging, and news, along with other apps designed for the in-car experience. An app can be installed, signed in, and working normally on the phone while still being absent from Android Auto because it has no compatible Android Auto experience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo look for compatible software, use Google Play’s Android Auto-compatible app listings. Google says that seeing all compatible apps there requires signing in to a Google Account with personalization enabled. Availability can vary by app, account, country, device, and Android Auto release, so installing an arbitrary phone app is not a reliable way to add a launcher icon. Google’s Android Auto app-download guide explains the compatibility requirement.
Compatibility is a requirement, not a setting you can override. If the developer has not supplied an Android Auto experience, there is no launcher switch that can turn the ordinary phone version into a safe in-car app. Check the app’s Google Play listing and Android Auto support before spending time on launcher troubleshooting.
Check whether you hid it
Return to Settings > Android Auto > Customize launcher and look for the app in the list. A switched-off entry is hidden from the car launcher but remains installed on the phone. Turn it back on, then exit and restart Android Auto so the launcher can reload.
Samsung: check battery-management disabling
Google documents a separate problem on Samsung phones: battery-management features can automatically disable apps that have not been used. If an app is present on the phone but missing from Android Auto, open the app on the phone again. Google says it should reappear the next time the Android Auto launcher opens.

Samsung users can also review battery settings for controls named Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep. The exact menu location and wording vary by Samsung model and software version. Disable the relevant unused-app behavior for the affected app, reopen the app, then reconnect Android Auto. Google’s missing-app troubleshooting page covers this Samsung-specific behavior.

How Android Auto notifications work
Find missed alerts in the status area and notification center
Android Auto places a numbered circle in the status area when there are missed calls, messages, or other alerts. Tap that indicator to open the notification center. The interface also surfaces recently used navigation, media, and communication apps, so an alert may be associated with the app tile you were using rather than appearing as a permanent launcher icon. Google’s screens-and-apps guide explains the status-area indicator and notification center.
The number is an indication that something needs attention, not a count of launcher apps. Open the center and review the individual tiles to identify whether the item is a missed call, message or another alert. Placement can differ with the vehicle display, but the status-area and notification-center functions remain the relevant places to look.
A notification being dismissed from the initial pop-up does not necessarily mean the message is gone. Missed or dismissed items can remain available in notification-center tiles, depending on the notification and app. Check the center before assuming that the alert was deleted.
Read and handle messages
Compatible messaging apps can send and receive messages through Android Auto. New-message notifications can appear on the car screen. You can ask Gemini or Google Assistant to read a message, or tap the notification when that control is offered. Missed or dismissed messages can be opened from the relevant tile or notification center and played aloud.
Assistant naming and availability are changing: Google’s help material notes that Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices during 2026. Your phone, account, language, and software version determine which assistant responds, so use the assistant name shown on your device rather than assuming that both are available. Google’s send-and-receive-messages instructions describe these message interactions.
There is a practical difference between receiving a notification and opening a messaging app. Android Auto can surface a compatible message as a glanceable alert and let the assistant read it without placing the full phone interface on the car screen. A normal phone notification from an incompatible app does not guarantee the same in-car controls.
Understand what the notification design controls
Google’s driving-design guidance calls for glanceable notification elements such as an app icon, short text, and action buttons. It also distinguishes notification types that can appear as heads-up alerts from those that remain accessible in the notification center. These are interface-design rules for compatible Android Auto experiences, not a single set of user-facing switches that appears identically on every phone.

Start with the phone’s notification settings for the specific app, then check Android Auto’s notification center to determine whether the alert is being delivered but not shown as a heads-up card. Google’s notification design documentation defines the supported notification patterns.

When notifications seem to be missing
- Check the notification center: a dismissed heads-up alert may still be listed there.
- Confirm the app is compatible: a normal phone notification does not guarantee an Android Auto notification experience.
- Check the phone’s app notification permission: Android Auto cannot present an alert the phone is not allowed to generate.
- Check the assistant and account in use: Gemini or Google Assistant availability can differ by device and rollout.
- Do not infer a missing universal toggle: Google’s public guidance does not document one identical notification-preference screen for all manufacturers and versions.
Test one message or alert after each change. If it appears in the notification center but not as a heads-up card, delivery is working and the difference is presentation. If it never appears anywhere, check the phone app’s notification permission and whether the app is supported by Android Auto.

What Google documents
Android Auto’s launcher can include assistant-activated actions alongside apps. Google gives examples such as discovering news podcasts, setting a reminder, or asking for the weather. These actions are initiated through the assistant and may appear in the launcher as available options; their presence can depend on the assistant, language, account, app support, and software rollout.
You can manage an action’s visibility and position through the same Customize launcher screen when it is listed there: switch it off to hide it or drag it to change its order, then exit and restart Android Auto. This is launcher organization, not the creation of a new command.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What is not established as a universal feature
The official Android Auto pages reviewed do not provide a current, universal click path for every user to create arbitrary custom shortcuts—for example, a user-defined button that always runs a particular multi-step routine. Android Auto versions, vehicle interfaces, assistant rollouts, and app capabilities differ, so unofficial instructions that promise a custom-shortcut editor for everyone should not be treated as a guaranteed feature.
If a specific app or phone advertises an Android Auto action, verify that the action appears in Customize launcher or in the assistant’s supported actions on that device. If it does not appear, there is no documented general-purpose Android Auto setting that can force it into the launcher. The supported, version-independent controls are hiding entries and reordering entries. Google’s launcher documentation describes the distinction between launcher customization and assistant-activated actions.
In other words, an assistant action is supplied by Google, the assistant, or a compatible app; it is not the same as a bookmark you can freely program. You can organize an action that is offered to you, but you should not expect to type a command, choose any phone task and have Android Auto create a new button for it.
A reliable setup sequence
Use this order when configuring Android Auto on a new phone, after installing a compatible app, or after a launcher change appears not to work:
- Verify support: confirm that the app or assistant action is intended for Android Auto rather than merely installed on the phone.
- Open phone settings: search for Android Auto, or use Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto.
- Open Customize launcher: turn off entries you do not want and drag the rest into the order you prefer.
- Reopen the app if it vanished: on Samsung phones, review unused-app battery controls before reconnecting.
- Exit and reconnect: Android Auto must refresh its launcher session before the new list and order are visible.
- Check alerts separately: use the status-area count and notification center for missed messages or calls; do not expect a notification preference to create a launcher icon.
- Use assistant actions as provided: if an action is listed, organize it like a launcher entry; do not assume that an arbitrary custom shortcut can be added.
This process separates compatibility, launcher organization, battery management, and notification delivery—the four checks that otherwise tend to be mistaken for one problem.
Best Value
Keep the troubleshooting order simple
Start with the least disruptive check: confirm compatibility and whether the entry is enabled. Next reopen the affected phone app, especially on Samsung devices. Only then disconnect and reconnect Android Auto. This order avoids changing notification settings when the real issue is that the app cannot appear in the launcher, and it avoids reinstalling an app that was merely hidden or temporarily disabled.
When comparing two vehicles or phones, compare the software conditions rather than assuming the larger display has more features. The same launcher list can wrap differently because of screen dimensions, while assistant actions and notification controls can vary because of the phone, account, language and software rollout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rearrange Android Auto apps from the car’s touchscreen?
Google’s documented method uses the connected phone. Open Settings, search for Android Auto, choose Customize launcher, then drag entries into order. Exit or disconnect Android Auto and reconnect so the car display refreshes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why is an app installed on my phone but missing from Android Auto?
The app may not provide an Android Auto-compatible experience. Check Google Play’s compatible-app listings; Google says that viewing all compatible apps there requires a signed-in Google Account with personalization enabled. Also check that you did not hide the entry in Customize launcher.
Why did an Android Auto app disappear from my Samsung phone?
Samsung battery management can disable apps that have not been used. Reopen the app on the phone, review settings named Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep, and reopen the Android Auto launcher.
Where do I find a message after dismissing its notification?
Tap the numbered circle in Android Auto’s status area to open the notification center. Missed or dismissed messages may remain in tiles there and can be played aloud through the available assistant or notification control.
Can I create any custom Android Auto shortcut I want?
There is no universal, currently documented workflow for creating arbitrary user-defined launcher shortcuts on every Android Auto version. You can hide or reorder listed apps and assistant actions; availability of a particular action depends on the assistant, app, account, language and rollout.
Why does my launcher layout look different from another vehicle’s?
Google describes a vertically scrolling grid, but vehicle display dimensions affect how entries are arranged and how many are visible at once. Scroll through the full launcher before concluding that an enabled app is missing.
The Bottom Line
Customize Android Auto from the phone’s Customize launcher page: hide entries, drag the rest into order, then exit and reconnect Android Auto. If an app is absent, verify Android Auto compatibility and check Samsung unused-app battery controls when relevant. Use the status-area count and notification center for missed alerts. Assistant actions may be available, but Google does not document one universal way to create arbitrary custom shortcuts.
