The fastest way to customize a tablet is to touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen, then use the controls for your platform. On an iPad, choose Edit and Customize; on an Android tablet, open Widgets or drag apps from the app list; on a Samsung Galaxy tablet, enter Home screen edit mode and open Home screen settings. The labels, available controls, and even the required Android version differ, so identify your tablet before following the matching steps.
First identify your tablet and software
Look at the device name in Settings before changing anything. An iPad uses iPadOS, a general Android tablet uses Google’s Android Home screen or a manufacturer-specific launcher, and a Samsung Galaxy tablet uses Samsung’s One UI Home interface. Two tablets running Android can therefore show different menus.

- iPad: Open Settings and check General > About for the model and software version.

- Galaxy tablet: Open Settings > About tablet to see the model and software information.
Apple warns that some Home screen appearance features depend on the model, software, and region. Google’s instructions mark some actions as requiring Android 14 or later. Samsung says menu names and available settings can vary by carrier, software version, and model. If a button in this guide is missing, confirm those three details before assuming the tablet is faulty.

Enter Home screen editing mode
iPad
- Go to the Home Screen.
- Touch and hold an empty area between the icons until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then tap Customize.

Android tablet
For widgets and many layout controls, touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen and tap Widgets. To place an app, open the app list, touch and hold the app, drag it toward the Home screen, and release it where you want it. A long press can also show an app’s shortcuts when that app provides them.
Samsung Galaxy tablet
Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen. The edit view exposes wallpaper, widgets, page controls, and Home screen settings for layout options. Samsung’s tablet instructions were updated June 29, 2026, and specifically name Galaxy Tab S9 and Galaxy Tab S8 among the compatible examples, while noting that other modern Galaxy tablet models are covered.
Customize an iPad Home Screen
Change icon and widget appearance
- Touch and hold an empty Home screen area until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Customize.
- Choose the icon and widget size. The larger option makes icons bigger and hides app names.
- Choose an appearance: Light, Dark, or Automatic.
- For the supported visual treatments, choose Clear or Tinted, then adjust the available tint controls.
- Tap outside the panel or finish editing when the Home screen looks right.
The controls affect the Home screen’s app icons and widgets together. Apple describes the available size, appearance, and tint options in its iPad Home Screen customization guide. If you select the larger icon size, the missing app labels are expected behavior rather than a display error.
Change the iPad wallpaper
- Enter Home screen editing mode by touching and holding an empty area.
- Tap Edit, then open the wallpaper controls.
- Tap Edit Wallpaper.
- Choose the available wallpaper source and adjust it as shown on screen.
- Apply the selection and leave editing mode.
Apple’s Make your iPad your own guide documents the Edit Wallpaper route and notes that appearance options can depend on the iPad model and region. The Apple pages used here focus on Home screen appearance and wallpaper; widget insertion can have a separate procedure in the iPad user guide.

Keep iPad changes reversible
- Use the same Edit > Customize panel to switch between light, dark, automatic, clear, and tinted treatments.
- Switch back to the smaller icon size if you need app names visible again.
- If an option is absent, check the iPadOS version and model rather than repeatedly tapping an empty area.
Customize a general Android tablet
Add an app to the Home screen
- Open the app list (often by swiping up from the bottom of the Home screen).
- Touch and hold the app you want.
- Drag it toward the Home screen.
- Move it to the target position and release.
Some apps expose shortcuts when you press and hold their icon. Drag a shortcut to the Home screen if you want a direct action rather than simply opening the app. The exact gesture for opening the app list can vary by launcher.
Add and place a widget
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Choose an app to see the widgets it supplies.
- Touch and hold the widget, drag it to the desired Home screen location, and release.
- Complete any setup panel the widget displays.
Widgets are on-screen elements designed to show information without opening an app. Google’s Add apps, shortcuts & widgets to your Home screens instructions cover this flow and note that some steps require Android 14 or later.
Resize a widget
- Touch and hold the widget already on the Home screen.
- Release it when resize handles or an outline appears.
- Drag the handles to the required width or height.
- Tap outside the widget to save the new size.
Resizing is available only when that widget exposes resize handles. If no handles appear, the widget’s dimensions are fixed by its developer or by the launcher.

- Touch and hold one app or shortcut.
- Drag it directly on top of another app or shortcut.
- Release it when the folder outline appears.
- Open the new folder if you want to rename it.
Folders are useful for grouping items such as communication, school, work, or media apps without filling every Home screen page.

Move or remove an item
- Touch and hold the app, shortcut, or widget.
- Drag it to a new position and release it, or drag it to the removal target shown by your launcher.
- Read the action label before confirming.
On Android, Remove takes the item off the Home screen but leaves the app installed. Uninstall removes the app from the device. Those actions are not interchangeable, so choose Remove when you only want to tidy the Home screen.
Add or remove Home screen pages
- Touch and hold an app or shortcut.
- Drag it toward the right edge of the current page and keep holding.
- Wait for a blank page to appear, then release the item there.
- To remove a page later, move all of its items elsewhere; the empty page is removed by the launcher.
Google’s Android guide covers app placement, shortcuts, widgets, folders, page creation, and removal. It does not establish one universal wallpaper path or one universal icon-style panel for every Android tablet, so those controls should be treated as manufacturer- and launcher-dependent.
Customize a Samsung Galaxy tablet
Change wallpaper
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpapers.
- Choose a built-in wallpaper or select an image from Gallery.
- Adjust the image using the on-screen controls.
- Tap the option to set or apply it, then choose the destination offered by your tablet.

Add an app or app shortcut
- Open Apps to view installed applications.
- Touch and hold an app.
- Choose Add to Home, or keep holding and drag the icon to the desired Home screen position.
- Release it when the placement indicator appears.
Samsung also documents adding favorites and Home screen shortcuts in its Galaxy phone and tablet shortcut guide. A shortcut can be removed without uninstalling the underlying app; read the command shown by the tablet before confirming.

Add or resize a widget
- Touch and hold an empty Home screen area.
- Tap Widgets.
- Select an app, then choose the widget style you want.
- Touch and hold the widget and drag it onto the Home screen.
- When available, touch and hold the placed widget again and drag its edge handles to resize it.
Some Galaxy widgets cannot be resized. Edge handles are the visual indication that resizing is supported.
Create a folder
- Touch and hold an app on the Home screen.
- Drag it on top of another app.
- Release it to create the folder.
- Open the folder to rename it or add more apps.
Manage pages and choose the main page
- Touch and hold an empty Home screen area to enter edit mode.
- Swipe through the page thumbnails to review the current layout.
- Use the page controls to add a page, remove a page, or drag a page thumbnail to change its order.
- Choose the control for the main Home screen page when you want a different page to open first.
- Tap outside edit mode when finished.
Open Home screen settings from edit mode to adjust the available grid or layout choices. Samsung’s page-management controls are model- and software-dependent, so a Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S8, and another modern Galaxy tablet may not display identical labels.

A practical layout plan
Make the first page the place you return to most often. Put only the apps and widgets you use several times a day there, then move occasional-use apps into labeled folders or later pages. A wide widget can consume several icon positions, so place it before fine-tuning the surrounding icons.

- Second page: work, school, reading, or creative tools grouped by folder.
- Later pages: infrequently used apps that you still want one-swipe access to.
On Android and Galaxy tablets, create folders by dropping one item on another. On a Galaxy tablet, use page thumbnails to make the page you need most the main page. On iPad, use the appearance controls to balance readability: larger icons are easier to recognize but remove app names.

Troubleshoot missing controls
The icons do not jiggle or the edit menu does not appear
- Touch an empty area rather than an icon or widget.
- Hold for a moment longer until the editing controls appear.
- On iPad, look specifically for Edit and then Customize.
- On a Galaxy tablet, open Home screen settings from edit mode instead of looking in the general Settings app.
The widget cannot be resized
Resize handles are optional. If handles do not appear after a long press, that widget or launcher fixes its dimensions. Try another widget style from the same app rather than forcing the current one.
An app disappeared after cleanup
On Android, check whether you chose Remove or Uninstall. Remove affects only the Home screen shortcut; Uninstall removes the app. On a Galaxy tablet, Samsung likewise distinguishes removing a shortcut from adding one, so return to Apps to place the shortcut again.
A documented setting is absent
Check the tablet model, operating-system version, carrier software, and region. Apple’s appearance controls can vary by model and region; Google’s page labels some actions Android 14 or later; Samsung lists carrier, software-version, and model differences. These limits explain why two tablets can show different menus after the same long press.

- Verify that the wallpaper is applied to the intended screen or destination.
- Check that frequently used apps remain on the first page or in an easy-to-reach folder.
- Confirm that a removed item was only a shortcut if you meant to keep the app installed.
- Test every widget after resizing to make sure its text and controls remain usable.
- Exit edit mode and swipe through each page once to confirm the order.
These steps use built-in Home screen controls, so no accessory, extra app, or physical product is required. The reliable starting point is always the same—hold an empty area—but the next button must match the tablet’s platform and software.
