You can reorganize a Samsung Galaxy home screen without uninstalling anything: touch and hold an empty area to add widgets, drag one app onto another to make a folder, and (on supported One UI 7 devices) adjust icon size and labels in Settings > Home screen > App and widget style. The exact menus depend on your Galaxy model, region, carrier, and software version, so use the options shown on your device as the final authority.
Start with the three controls that change the most
Most home-screen customization comes down to three actions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Widgets: glanceable information and controls such as calendars, weather, clocks, or music playback.
- Folders: grouped app shortcuts that reduce visual clutter.
- App icons and layout: the size, labels, and grid density that determine how many shortcuts fit on each page.
These controls affect shortcuts and presentation, not the underlying apps or their data. Removing a shortcut or folder does not uninstall the app. A widget is also only a view of an app; removing the widget leaves the app installed.
Add, move, or remove app shortcuts
Put an installed app on the Home screen
- From the Home screen, swipe up to open the Apps screen.
- Touch and hold the app you want.
- Tap Add to Home, or continue holding and drag the icon to the desired Home-screen page and position.
If the icon lands on a full page, Galaxy may place it on another page or create a new page while you drag. Leave space before releasing if you want the shortcut beside a particular widget or folder.

Remove only the shortcut
Touch and hold the Home-screen icon and tap Remove. Samsung distinguishes this from uninstalling: the app remains in the Apps screen and can be added again later. If you intend to delete the app itself, use the separate Uninstall command and read the confirmation carefully.
Move a shortcut to another page
Touch and hold the icon, then drag it to the left or right edge of the display. Hold it at the edge until the next page appears, and release it in the new position. You can also drag an icon to the page preview area that appears during Home-screen editing, where supported by your model.
Add and configure widgets
Place a widget
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Choose an app or widget category, then swipe through the available formats.
- Touch and hold the format you want, or tap Add when that control is shown.
- Drag the widget to its final position and release it.
A single app can offer several widget formats. A compact format may show one item, while a wider format can show more information but consume more grid cells. If a widget is missing, check that its app is installed and updated, then look again in the widget picker; availability is app- and software-dependent.
Move, resize, and remove a widget
Touch and hold a widget, then drag it to move it. To resize it, keep it selected and drag the visible resize handles or corners. Resizing is available only when the widget supports it, and the minimum and maximum dimensions are set by that widget.
To delete the widget from the Home screen, touch and hold it and tap Remove. This removes the widget instance, not the app. If no resize handles appear, that widget format has a fixed size or the current launcher does not expose resizing for it.
Use a widget’s own settings
Touch and hold the widget and choose Settings when available. Depending on the widget, you may be able to change the information source, display mode, background color, transparency, or other appearance choices. These controls are not universal; two widgets on the same phone can offer different settings.
Build a widget stack
- Touch and hold a compatible widget.
- Choose Create stack.
- Select another compatible widget and add it to the stack.
- Swipe horizontally across the stack to switch between its widgets.
Stacks combine several widgets in one footprint, which is useful when you want information available without dedicating a separate block to each item. Stack controls vary by software. Samsung notes that automatic widget rotation is unavailable on One UI 6.1.1 or higher, so you may need to swipe manually rather than rely on timed rotation.
Create and manage app folders
Make a folder in one gesture
- Touch and hold one app icon on the Home screen.
- Drag it directly on top of another app icon.
- Release when the second icon is highlighted.
Galaxy creates a folder containing both apps. Tap the folder name to rename it, then use the palette control to choose a folder color when that option is shown.

Add and remove apps from a folder
Open the folder and tap Add to select more apps, or drag additional Home-screen icons into it. To take an app out, open the folder and drag the icon to an empty Home-screen area. Moving an app in or out changes only its shortcut location.
Delete a folder without deleting its apps
Touch and hold the folder and choose Remove or the equivalent folder-removal command. The folder disappears, but the apps return to the Apps screen. This is different from uninstalling each app.
Enlarge a folder on One UI 7
Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance includes an Enlarge command in an eligible folder’s long-press menu. A larger folder can expose more shortcuts directly, reducing taps, but it occupies more Home-screen space. The command is unavailable when there is not enough surrounding space, so move nearby icons or widgets first and try again. Folder enlargement and its exact appearance are not guaranteed on every Galaxy model.

Use the One UI 7 App and widget style panel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Home screen.
- Tap App and widget style.
- Use the app icon-size slider to make icons smaller or larger, if the slider is available.
- Choose whether app labels and widget labels are displayed.
These are documented One UI 7 controls, but Samsung says menus vary by model, region, carrier, and software. If App and widget style or the size slider is missing, your device may use an earlier One UI release or a model-specific Home-screen implementation.
Understand the label dependency
On One UI 7, Samsung states: “App labels must be turned on in order to enable Widget labels.” In practice, turn on app labels first if you want text under widgets. Third-party widgets are excluded from the widget-label setting, and labels can reduce the space available for widget content. If a widget becomes cramped, switch labels off or use a larger widget format.
Choose a grid that matches your usage
Grid density controls how many icon and widget cells fit across and down a Home-screen page. A denser grid gives you more visible shortcuts; a looser grid makes icons and widgets easier to scan and leaves more breathing room.
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Denser grid | Many frequently used apps on one page | Smaller visual targets and less room for wide widgets |
| Looser grid | Large widgets, glanceable layouts, or easier tapping | Fewer shortcuts per page and more swiping |
| Mixed pages | A widget-focused first page and app-focused secondary pages | Requires deliberate page organization |
One UI 7 changes the default grid choices: Samsung notes that 4×5 and 5×5 are no longer included in the default grid selection. The labels and choices visible on your phone therefore depend on the installed software rather than on a universal Galaxy standard.
Design a practical layout instead of filling every cell
Build a first page for glanceable information
Put the information you check without opening an app—such as a calendar agenda or weather—near the top or center, and keep a small row of daily-use shortcuts near the bottom. Leave enough empty space around a widget to select and resize it without accidentally moving neighboring icons.

Use folders for occasional tasks
Group apps by task rather than by installation order. Examples include a folder for travel, one for finances, and one for media. Keep only the most frequently opened apps outside folders; otherwise the folder system adds taps without reducing clutter.
Separate work and personal pages
Place work-related widgets and shortcuts on one page and personal ones on another. This keeps a dense app grid from competing with a large widget and makes it easier to switch context by swiping once.
Choose between direct shortcuts and folders
Keep an app directly on the Home screen when you open it several times a day or need it immediately. Put less frequent apps into a folder when grouping them saves more space than the extra tap costs. A folder is also useful when several apps serve the same task, but a page filled with many similarly named folders can be harder to scan than a small number of clearly named groups.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLock a finished arrangement when the option exists
Some Galaxy versions offer a Lock Home screen layout control in the Home screen settings. When available, it prevents accidental movement or deletion of icons and widgets during ordinary use. Turn it off temporarily whenever you need to reorganize. The wording and availability vary, so search the Home screen settings on your device rather than assuming every model includes the switch.
Portrait and landscape editing limits on One UI 7
One UI 7 can adapt Home-screen arrangement between portrait and landscape orientations, but editing is restricted in landscape view. Samsung specifically notes limits on moving or deleting icons and widgets and on resizing folders while the phone is in landscape. Rotate the phone back to portrait before reorganizing if a drag, delete, or resize handle does not respond.
This restriction affects editing, not necessarily everyday viewing. If your layout appears to shift after rotation, check both orientations in portrait after finishing changes and leave the phone in the orientation in which you do most setup work.
What can change after a data transfer or software update
After transferring data to a new Galaxy, the Home-screen arrangement may not be reproduced exactly. One UI 7 guidance warns that transferred arrangements can change and leave empty spaces. Re-add missing shortcuts from the Apps screen, move widgets into the open cells, and recreate folders if their contents did not carry over.
A software update can also rename or relocate a setting. Before troubleshooting a missing control, open Settings > Home screen and read the options actually offered on that device. Do not assume that a path from another Galaxy model or an earlier One UI version still applies.

How to decide on widget size and labels
Start with the smallest widget format that shows the information you actually need. If it truncates text, hides controls, or forces repeated taps, try the next larger format. Larger widgets provide more information at a glance but can displace several shortcuts, so compare the space they occupy with the number of apps you would otherwise keep visible.
Labels are helpful when icons are unfamiliar or when several apps look alike. Turning them off creates a cleaner, less crowded page and leaves more room around widgets. On One UI 7, app labels must remain on before widget labels can be enabled, and third-party widgets are not covered by the widget-label setting. Treat labels as a readability choice rather than a performance setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a feature is missing
There is no single Galaxy home-screen menu shared by every phone and tablet. Model, region, carrier, launcher version, and software release can all change the available controls. If a named command is absent, first check Settings > Home screen, then confirm the installed One UI version. Avoid installing a replacement launcher just to follow a path that belongs to a different Galaxy model; the built-in options may simply use different names or omit that feature.

A widget may be unavailable because its app is not installed, because the app has not yet supplied a widget for that software version, or because the selected format is not supported on that device. Troubleshoot the most common problems
The widget will not fit
- Remove or move an adjacent icon or widget to create the required cells.
- Try a smaller format of the same widget from the widget picker.
- In portrait, touch and hold the widget and look for resize handles.
- If no handles appear, the widget is fixed-size on that software.
The icon-size slider is missing
- Confirm that you are looking under Settings > Home screen, not the display-size or accessibility menus.
- Check the phone’s One UI version and model; the documented slider is a One UI 7 feature and is not universal.
- Use the available Home-screen grid and label controls instead if your model does not expose icon sizing.
A folder will not enlarge
- Switch to portrait orientation.
- Move nearby icons or widgets to free surrounding space.
- Touch and hold the folder again and look for Enlarge.
- If the command is still absent, that folder or device may not support enlargement.
A widget stack option is missing
Create stack appears only for compatible widgets on software that supports stacks. Try a different format or another widget from the same app. If the command never appears, place the widgets separately; removing one widget does not remove the app.
The widget is present but shows the wrong information
Touch and hold it and open Settings, if offered. Some widgets let you choose an account, calendar, list, or display mode; others have no configuration panel. If there is no setting, remove that instance and add the format you need again from the widget picker.
Removing an icon removed more than expected
Check which command you selected. Remove deletes the Home-screen shortcut only; Uninstall removes the app. If the app was only removed from the Home screen, find it by swiping up to the Apps screen and add it again.

A quick setup sequence that works for most Galaxy phones
- In portrait orientation, remove shortcuts you never use from the first page; do not uninstall them unless that is your intention.
- Add one or two glanceable widgets from the empty-space Widgets menu.
- Resize those widgets before placing folders so the page’s real space is clear.
- Create folders by dragging related apps together, then name and color them.
- On One UI 7, open Settings > Home screen > App and widget style and set icon size and labels.
- Choose a denser or looser grid based on whether you value shortcut count or widget space.
- If your phone offers a Home-screen lock, enable it after the arrangement is finished.
- Check the finished page in portrait and landscape, then do any further editing in portrait.
The result should make the apps and information you use most visible at a glance while keeping less frequent tasks grouped rather than scattered across multiple pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add a widget to a Samsung Galaxy Home screen?
Touch and hold an empty area, tap Widgets, choose an app and format, then tap Add or drag the widget onto the page. Move or resize it afterward if that format supports those actions.
How do I create a folder on a Galaxy phone?
Touch and hold one Home-screen app and drag it directly onto another app. Galaxy creates a folder; open it to rename it, choose a color when available, and use Add or drag more shortcuts inside.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does removing an icon uninstall the app?
No. The Remove command deletes only the Home-screen shortcut. The installed app remains in the Apps screen. Choose Uninstall only when you intend to remove the app itself.
How do I change Samsung app icon size?
On supported One UI 7 devices, open Settings > Home screen > App and widget style and use the app icon-size slider. The control is not available on every model, region, carrier, or software version.
Why can’t I enable widget labels?
On One UI 7, app labels must be enabled before widget labels. Samsung also excludes third-party widgets from the widget-label setting, and labels may reduce the space available for widget content.
Why can’t I resize my Galaxy widget?
Only widgets that support resizing show handles. Touch and hold the widget in portrait and look for corners or handles. If none appear, that format has a fixed size on your device or launcher.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why won’t my One UI 7 folder enlarge?
The folder must be eligible and have enough surrounding space. Switch to portrait, move nearby icons or widgets, then touch and hold the folder and look for Enlarge. Some models do not offer the feature.
Why can’t I move icons while my Galaxy is sideways?
One UI 7 restricts several Home-screen editing actions in landscape, including moving or deleting icons and widgets and resizing folders. Rotate back to portrait to reorganize.
The Bottom Line
For a clean, usable Galaxy Home screen, add only the widgets you check often, keep daily apps visible, group occasional apps in named folders, and tune icon size, labels, and grid density to the space you have. One UI 7 adds useful controls, but model and software differences are normal; when a menu is missing, follow the Home screen settings shown on your own device.
