Use playlist or playout software to crossfade tracks before the audio reaches your streaming encoder. Liquidsoap’s playlist tools include a smart crossfade option: it can overlap tracks when that suits the transition and use a simpler sequence when an overlap would muddy the sound. The crossfade happens in the program feed—not in YouTube’s broadcast controls.
Where the crossfade belongs
A crossfade overlaps the end of one song with the start of the next: the outgoing track fades down as the incoming track fades up. Put that operation in the playout or mixing layer that controls the playlist, before encoding. The encoder then sends the resulting continuous audio-video program to YouTube Live.

YouTube distinguishes the incoming feed from the broadcast viewers watch: a liveStream represents the audio-video input, while a liveBroadcast represents the event. That separation is useful when planning a 24/7 setup—the crossfade shapes the feed; it does not control the YouTube event lifecycle. See Google’s broadcast and stream documentation.

Set up playlist crossfading with Liquidsoap
1. Prepare a rights-cleared playlist
Use music whose rights cover the live broadcast and any archive or replay you intend to make. If you use licensed third-party music, coordinate with the label or distributor and ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be added to YouTube’s Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

2. Choose playout software that crossfades tracks
Liquidsoap’s official quickstart demonstrates playlist playback wrapped in a smart crossfade. Its quickstart and crossfade documentation are the most directly relevant references for this workflow. The current development documentation identifies itself as version 2.5.x; check the documentation matching your installed release before adapting an example.
Liquidsoap’s documented automatic crossfade method has been integrated since version 2.2.5 and, for that internal method, requires FFmpeg bindings. Confirm that your installation has the needed bindings and dependencies. The documentation describes the capability, but a specific configuration still needs to be checked against your installed version and setup.

3. Tune the transitions by listening
A smart transition can consider the end and start loudness, fading or crossing where appropriate and sequencing tracks without an overlap when one would mask the other. Listen to representative pairs from your playlist: a long overlap may blur two loud passages, while a short fade may leave a perceptible gap if a track ends abruptly. Adjust the transition duration or rules to suit the material rather than applying one setting blindly to every song.

Keep the playout service running and route its output into an encoder that sends the program to YouTube Live. If the encoder workflow expects an audio-video feed, provide a visual signal as well as audio. Check the current encoder settings and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room; YouTube’s API documentation explains the distinction between the incoming stream and the broadcast event.

5. Monitor the broadcast and rights status
Watch Live Control Room and YouTube Studio for warnings, interruptions, or strikes. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, and it may interrupt a stream after identifying protected content. A clean crossfade does not change those checks or provide music rights.
RTMP or HLS: choose for delivery, not crossfading
HLS is an optional YouTube ingestion protocol; it does not create track transitions. Do not switch protocols just to crossfade. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies 1–4 second segment durations, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and supported audio codecs. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These constraints matter only if you choose HLS; follow the current YouTube instructions for the selected encoder and protocol.

Check a playout setup before relying on it 24/7
When comparing software workflows, evaluate whether they support track-to-track overlap (rather than only visual scene transitions), continuous playlist playback, recovery from a failed track or source, sensible handling of different loudness levels and endings, a usable feed to your encoder, and monitoring that lets you intervene. These are practical selection criteria, not a claim that any particular unreviewed application has a specific feature.
