For a rectangular crop in Python, use Pillow’s Image.crop(). Give it the crop boundaries as (left, upper, right, lower), then save the returned image.
Crop and save an image with Pillow
Install Pillow if it is not already available in your Python environment:
python -m pip install PillowThen crop a rectangle from an image:
from PIL import Image
with Image.open("input.jpg") as im:
cropped = im.crop((100, 50, 400, 250))
cropped.save("cropped.jpg")The box selects from x=100 to x=400 and y=50 to y=250, measured from the image’s upper-left corner. The resulting crop is 300 pixels wide and 200 pixels high. Replace the filenames and coordinates with those for your image.
Understand the crop coordinates
Pillow’s crop box is (left, upper, right, lower), not (x, y, width, height). The first pair gives the upper-left boundary; the second pair gives the lower-right boundary. To start from an x/y position and a desired width and height, add the dimensions to the starting coordinates:

im.crop(box).save("cropped.jpg")The origin (0, 0) is at the upper-left. Pillow’s tutorial describes coordinates as positions between pixels; for example, a box of (0, 0, 64, 64) selects a 64-by-64-pixel region.
Choose the right output operation
Image.crop() extracts a rectangular part of the source. If your goal is instead to place an image into a specified output size or shape, Pillow’s ImageOps module includes fit, contain, cover, and pad. Choose among them based on whether you need the whole source visible, an exact target size, permission to cut off excess content, or padding. Check the current API reference for each helper’s parameters and defaults.
