To create a usable font, you need more than letter drawings: you need a font editor that links glyph outlines to characters, manages spacing and font metadata, and exports a font file. A practical workflow is to choose the characters and purpose first, draw or import glyphs, refine spacing in words, then generate and test the file in the applications where you plan to use it.
For a free desktop starting point, compare FontForge and Birdfont rather than assuming one is best for everyone. FontLab 8 is a paid Mac and Windows option for broader production work, including variable and color fonts. The right choice depends on your platform, output needs, licensing, and how much typographic control your project requires.

What you need to create a font
A font is an encoded collection of glyphs, spacing metrics, metadata, and, when needed, typographic behaviors such as ligatures. FontForge’s documentation defines a font editor as “a program designed to create and modify fonts.” A vector illustration app can draw letter shapes, but it does not by itself associate those shapes with characters, manage their relationships, or generate an installable font file. See FontForge’s documentation.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The essential work is to design or import glyph outlines, assign character mappings and widths, check how characters look together, and export a font in a format your intended software accepts. You can begin with a small personal handwriting or display font; a larger multilingual family involves many more glyphs and production decisions. The character set should be decided before drawing, because the project’s intended language and use determine what it needs.

When to choose a free editor
For a first personal font or a project without a software budget, start by comparing FontForge and Birdfont against your target operating system and output requirements. FontForge is free/libre and supports several established font formats. Birdfont’s listed export options include SVG as well as TTF and OTF, but its freeware licensing condition matters if you plan to distribute the font. Draw each glyph in the font editor, or create vector shapes elsewhere and import them. FontLab’s tutorial also describes turning scans or photos into vector glyphs; whichever path you use, the result must become usable outlines mapped to the right characters. Assign widths and spacing
Set each glyph’s advance width and side spacing so characters sit sensibly next to one another. Inspect letters in words and combinations rather than judging them only in isolation: spacing that looks acceptable one character at a time can feel uneven in a word. FontForge documents metrics and glyph relationships, while FontLab describes spacing and kerning as part of its production workflow.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Add optional typographic behavior
Features such as ligatures can make a font more capable, but they are not required for a small first font. Add them only when they serve the design and the editor and output format support them. FontForge documents ligatures; FontLab lists automatic OpenType feature creation among its advanced production options.

Generate and inspect the font file
Generate the output font from the editor, then install or open it in the applications where it is meant to be used. Check that characters appear, spacing holds up in actual text, and the file behaves as needed in your target workflow. Keep the editable project as well as the generated file so you can fix glyphs or metrics later. FontForge’s design guide discusses generating and checking finished work before release: FontForge design guide.
Choose an output format for where the font will be used
TrueType (.ttf) and OpenType CFF (.otf) are practical finished choices described by FontForge’s guide. Birdfont also lists TTF, OTF, and SVG export. No single format is established as best for every destination; select one accepted by the applications, operating systems, or publishing workflow where you intend to use the font. If a destination specifies a format, follow that requirement.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Drawing without character mapping: attractive outlines are not a usable font unless they are linked to the intended characters in a font editor.
- Ignoring spacing: individual glyphs may look good while words appear cramped or uneven. Review combinations in context and adjust metrics.
- Adding complexity before it is needed: advanced OpenType behaviors are optional for a basic personal font. Start with the characters and behavior your use case actually needs.
- Overlooking the license: confirm that the editor edition’s terms permit how you intend to distribute the font, particularly with Birdfont’s freeware binary.
- Checking only the editor preview: generate the font and inspect it in the applications and workflow where you plan to use it.
