For one screenshot, use your browser’s page-capture command or developer tools. For recurring captures or many URLs, automate the same navigation and save settings with Playwright or Puppeteer. First choose whether you need the visible viewport, one element, or the whole scrollable page; that choice often matters more than changing tools. No official comparison here establishes a universal speed winner, so treat automation as a way to avoid repeating manual steps—not as a guaranteed time-saving benchmark.
Choose the capture method that fits the job
One-off screenshot
Use the browser’s built-in capture feature or developer tools when you only need one image. This avoids installing a browser automation library and writing a script. Exact shortcuts and menu labels depend on the browser and version; the available sources establish capture modes, not a universal shortcut.
Recurring captures or multiple pages
Use a Playwright or Puppeteer script or CLI when you repeatedly capture pages. A reusable workflow can preserve the URL, capture scope, wait condition, format, and filename, reducing repeated manual actions. That is a workflow benefit, not a measured claim that either tool is faster in every workload.
Choose the smallest useful scope
- Viewport: captures what is visible in the browser window.
- Element: captures a specific component, such as a chart or card, without a tall page image that you must crop later.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page, including content below the fold. Use it only when that content is needed; the resulting image contains more material and may be larger.

How do I take a full-page screenshot?
With Playwright’s CLI, specify the full-page option and an output filename. For example:

Automate repeat captures with Playwright
Install Playwright and its browser once, then run a script to navigate and save a screenshot. This Node.js example captures the full page and waits for the page load event:

Make the wait match the page
Wait for the content you actually need rather than adding an arbitrary long delay. The example uses the browser’s load event; if the page renders important data afterward, wait for a relevant selector or another condition that signals that content is ready. A global network-idle wait can be unsuitable for pages that keep analytics, chat, or streaming requests open. The right condition depends on the page, and the documentation does not establish a universally fastest setting.
Capture an element
With Playwright, target a locator directly:

Use Puppeteer when it fits your existing workflow
Puppeteer also provides page and element screenshots. Its guide demonstrates navigating with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before calling page.screenshot(); that is an example, not a universal fastest wait condition. Choose the wait based on the content your capture requires.

Set output, resolution, and filenames deliberately
Choose the format for the use
- PNG: a sensible default when you want a lossless image.
- JPEG: useful when a smaller photographic image matters more than lossless detail.
- WebP: another supported output option in Playwright’s screenshot tooling.
Use the corresponding filename extension and check the documentation for the specific tool’s format options. Format choice, page content, and capture dimensions all affect the resulting file; no universal file-size or speed comparison is established here.
Use device pixels only when detail calls for them
Playwright’s CLI offers --hires for device-pixel screenshots. Higher-resolution output provides more pixel detail, but is unnecessary for many routine captures. If you later use screenshot coordinates to interact with the page, account for the fact that high-resolution screenshot coordinates do not match CSS-pixel mouse coordinates. Make repeat runs easy to identify
Use stable, descriptive filenames for fixed pages and add a date or other run identifier when you need to retain multiple versions. Playwright’s screenshot tooling supports explicit filenames and timestamp-based naming. Keep visual comparisons reproducible
For visual regression checks, use the same operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power conditions, and headless or headed mode used to create the reference image. Playwright warns that these environment differences can affect rendering. Playwright Test can capture repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match, then save the last one; its custom stylesheet option can filter dynamic elements and improve determinism. Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
The capture misses content loaded after navigation
The page may finish its initial load before its important data appears. Wait for a selector tied to that content or another suitable page-specific condition, then capture. Avoid replacing the missing content with a long fixed delay unless the page provides no better signal.
The script waits indefinitely
A page may keep network connections active, so a global network-idle condition may never become suitable. Use a wait condition tied to the content you need. Puppeteer’s networkidle2 example is not a guarantee that this setting is right for every page. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide

The element image is empty or unexpected

Screenshot tests change across runs or machines
Keep the rendering environment consistent with the one used for the baseline. Differences in operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode may change output.
