You can create a traffic time-lapse by opening a consistent traffic-map view in an automated browser, capturing screenshots at set intervals, and assembling the resulting images in a video editor. Playwright supports both page screenshots and browser video recording, but it does not supply historical traffic data or turn captures into an edited time-lapse. A live-map sequence shows only what the map displayed at the times you captured it; it is not automatically a validated historical traffic record.
What a browser-automated traffic time-lapse can show
A capture workflow records pixels shown in a browser. It does not establish where the map’s traffic observations came from, how complete they are, or whether they accurately represent conditions between captures. Those questions depend on the map provider and data source. If the project needs a defensible historical record, first find a provider with authorized historical observations for the location, time span, sampling interval, and publication use you need. No particular provider or geography-specific data source is established here.
Decide at the outset whether the deliverable is a visual illustration of a live map over time, a demonstration of browser activity, or an analysis based on a permitted historical dataset. Do not present the first two as the third. Google also cautions in its Google Maps Additional Terms of Service that actual conditions can differ from map content and that users should exercise independent judgment.
Choose screenshots or browser video
| Approach | What you capture | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled screenshots | Separate page images at chosen times | You want control over sampling, frame selection, and excluding failed captures | Playwright documents screenshots, not a complete traffic time-lapse editing pipeline. |
| Browser video recording | A recording of browser activity | You want continuous screen activity or to show the automation running | The recording is saved when the browser context closes; it does not prove historical-data access or publication rights. |
Playwright documents both page screenshots and video recording. For deliberate sampling, screenshots are usually easier to inspect and sequence. For footage of a page changing continuously, recording may be more convenient, but it captures browser activity rather than generating a set of independently timed observations.

- 【48MP Imaging and 4K Video】This 4K time-lapse camera features a starlight-level 5-megapixel sensor, a 1/2.78" image sensor, and records 48MP images and 4K/10FPS video. It can capture a series of still images, which can then be edited into sped-up videos or short films.
- 【Supports 2.4G WiFi connectivity】Features WiFi control and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0, allowing for pre-setting and shooting of outdoor time-lapse photography via a WiFi connection on the same frequency band. Requires downloading the mobile app: TrailCam Go.
- 【Simple Three-Step Time-Lapse Photography Setup: Turn off with the three-position toggle switch — Settings — Start Time-Lapse. Experience quick and easy setup. Insert a memory card, and the time-lapse camera will continuously record in a loop, providing a seamless solution for long-duration time-lapse photography.
- 【Three mounting methods】Suitable for different scenarios: The suction cup bracket is suitable for indoor courtyard tiles, the self-tapping screws are suitable for tree trunks and rock crevices, and the claw clips are suitable for mounting on pillars and iron poles. Combined with a windproof and rainproof housing, it is designed specifically for harsh outdoor shooting environments.
- 【Efficient Task Management】To optimize time-lapse footage and save power, you can strategically plan your shooting schedule by setting up to six shooting periods per day, week, or specific dates (e.g., 08:00-17:00). This allows the camera to work only when needed, avoiding ineffective shooting and obtaining ideal footage.
Prepare a stable, permitted map view
- Confirm the source and allowed use. Identify the exact map product or dataset, the relevant terms, whether video display is allowed, and what attribution must remain visible. Permission for an on-screen display is not blanket permission to extract, store, or republish map data.
- Set the view manually first. Choose the location, zoom, viewport, and traffic layer in the browser. Use a URL that reliably opens the intended view if the provider supports one. Browser automation does not guarantee that map controls, layer selection, or viewport will remain stable after site changes.
- Keep the capture consistent. Fix the browser viewport and avoid changing the location, zoom, or layer during a sequence. Keep any required attribution in-frame and legible. Do not hide it in the page or crop it out during editing.
- Choose an interval and duration suited to the question. A short interval produces more frames and a larger collection; a longer interval produces fewer samples and may miss changes between them. These are production choices, not guarantees of traffic-data accuracy.
- Check a few manual captures. Confirm that the map is loaded, the intended layer is visible, labels and attribution fit in the viewport, and the page is not showing a consent prompt, error, or stale state.
Capture scheduled screenshots with Playwright
The following Node.js example opens a map URL supplied by you and saves PNG frames at a fixed interval. It deliberately does not interact with undocumented map APIs or extract map tiles. Install Node.js and Playwright, save the code as capture-frames.mjs, and replace the example URL with the permitted map view you prepared. The script is a general workflow example, not a tested integration for a particular map provider.
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser:
npm init -y
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Run the capture script with environment variables so you can change the URL, interval, and count without editing the code:

MAP_URL='https://example.com/your-map-view' INTERVAL_MS=60000 FRAME_COUNT=30 node capture-frames.mjs
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { mkdir } from 'node:fs/promises';
const url = process.env.MAP_URL;
if (!url) throw new Error('Set MAP_URL to a permitted map view URL.');
const intervalMs = Number(process.env.INTERVAL_MS ?? 60000);
const frameCount = Number(process.env.FRAME_COUNT ?? 30);
if (!Number.isFinite(intervalMs) || intervalMs < 1000) {
throw new Error('INTERVAL_MS must be at least 1000.');
}
if (!Number.isInteger(frameCount) || frameCount < 1) {
throw new Error('FRAME_COUNT must be a positive integer.');
}
await mkdir('frames', { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
try {
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
await page.waitForTimeout(5000); // Allow the visible map to settle.
for (let i = 0; i < frameCount; i++) {
const name = `frames/frame-${String(i).padStart(5, '0')}.png`;
await page.screenshot({ path: name });
console.log(`Saved ${name} at ${new Date().toISOString()}`);
if (i + 1 < frameCount) await page.waitForTimeout(intervalMs);
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The example uses a fixed viewport and sequentially named files so an editor can order them easily. The initial five-second wait is only a practical settling delay; it does not certify that all map tiles or traffic data have loaded. For a map application with a documented ready indicator, wait for that supported condition instead. If browser automation is not permitted for the chosen service, do not run this against it.
Make sampling more reliable
- Record timestamps in a manifest alongside each frame if the exact capture time matters. The console output above provides a basic timestamp, but a production workflow can write it to a CSV or JSON file.
- Check that each capture is a valid map view before retaining it. A screenshot can succeed technically while showing an error page, blank content, or a consent overlay.
- Use a persistent, approved browser profile only when the service requires a user session and its terms allow the intended automation. Protect cookies and credentials; do not commit them to source control.
- Plan for page changes and interruptions. A scheduled process should log failures, avoid silently treating missing frames as valid observations, and document gaps in the final video.
Record browser video with Playwright
When the deliverable should show continuous browser activity, Playwright can record video for a browser context. This records the page as it is displayed; you still need a separate editing step to make a time-lapse. Playwright’s video documentation notes an important lifecycle detail: a manually managed context must be closed, and the resulting video is available after the page or context closes.

import { mkdir } from 'node:fs/promises';
const url = process.env.MAP_URL;
if (!url) throw new Error('Set MAP_URL to a permitted map view URL.');
await mkdir('videos', { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
recordVideo: { dir: 'videos', size: { width: 1440, height: 900 } }
});
const page = await context.newPage();
try {
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
await page.waitForTimeout(5 * 60 * 1000); // Example: record five minutes.
} finally {
await context.close(); // Video is finalized on context closure.
await browser.close();
}
Use an intentional recording duration and make sure your process reaches context closure, including on errors or termination. A video that has not been finalized may not yet be available as a finished output. Confirm the saved file and inspect it before editing.
Turn the captures into a time-lapse
Playwright produces source material, not the finished time-lapse. Import the numbered PNG sequence or recorded browser video into a video editor, set the desired playback speed and output dimensions, and export using a format suitable for the destination. The appropriate frame rate, codec, resolution, and duration depend on the project; the cited Playwright capture capabilities do not prescribe those settings.

- For image sequences, verify ordering and decide how to handle gaps or failed captures. Do not duplicate a missing frame in a way that implies an observation was made.
- For browser video, speed changes can make motion appear continuous, but the result still reflects only the period actually recorded.
- Preserve attribution and any notices required by the source in the composition and final export.
- Label the place and capture period accurately. If the source is a live map sampled by your browser, describe it as a capture of displayed map views, not a verified historical traffic dataset.
Check terms, attribution, and capture scope
Permission depends on the particular map product, data source, agreement, and intended publication. Google’s Additional Terms state that users may “publicly display content with proper attribution online, in video, and in print.” That permission is conditioned on the applicable terms; it does not cancel restrictions elsewhere in those terms, including restrictions on mass downloading and bulk feeds.
Google’s Map Tiles API policies apply to that specific API and require attribution for covered visualizations while restricting uses such as pre-fetching, indexing, storage, caching, and extraction subject to the governing agreement. Do not assume that the Tile API policy automatically governs every Google Maps product, or that ordinary browser capture authorizes repeated content extraction. Check the current terms and the terms for the exact product and project before capture and publication.

An archived 2018 Google Maps APIs terms page is historical, not a current contract for a modern project. For a current decision, use the terms and policies applicable to the product you are actually using. Do not scrape undocumented map interfaces, download tiles in bulk, or remove attribution as a shortcut.

For individual website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. This example returns a WebP image; the target URL is the map view you are authorized to capture. An API screenshot is still just a capture at a point in time—it does not provide traffic history or replace permission checks.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting
- The page opens, but the map is blank or incomplete. A navigation event such as
domcontentloadeddoes not prove that a map’s dynamic content is ready. Increase the settling delay or, where supported, wait for a documented page condition. Check for blocked resources, a consent prompt, or an error before accepting the frame. - Frames differ in zoom or location. The page may be restoring a different view or changing its layout. Use a stable map URL or documented controls, retain a fixed viewport, and inspect early frames. Do not rely on undocumented requests or tile endpoints.
- Attribution is clipped or missing. Adjust the viewport or map composition so the required notices remain visible. Do not crop them out in the editor.
- No video file appears. Ensure the context closes and that the script waits for closure to finish before exiting. Playwright makes the recording available after page or context closure; inspect the configured output directory.
- The script stops midway. Check the console and network environment, reduce the run duration, and add explicit logging and recovery for the failure mode. Treat a missing interval as missing data rather than filling it with a fabricated frame.
- Output is too large or too long to edit comfortably. Reduce the capture count, viewport dimensions, or recording duration where appropriate, while keeping enough detail for the intended use. Keep original files if you need to audit the sequence.
- The project involves historical or commercial publication. A screen capture alone does not settle data provenance or reuse permission. Confirm provider-specific historical coverage, permitted use, attribution, and publication rights before proceeding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a traffic-map time-lapse prove what traffic conditions were between captures?
No. It shows the displayed map at capture times. It does not establish conditions between those times or validate the underlying observations.
Can I use the same automation for every map provider?
No. Page behavior, supported URLs, automation permissions, and terms vary by provider. Confirm the specific service’s current rules and use only documented, permitted interactions.
