How to Create Strong, Unique Passwords Without Adding Predictable Suffixes

The safest default is to let a reputable password manager generate a random password for every account, save it, and autofill it when you sign in. If you must create a password yourself, use a long passphrase made from unpredictable words—not a familiar base password with an account name, year, extra digit, or punctuation mark attached. Add multifactor authentication (MFA) or a passkey whenever the service offers one, and replace a password when there is evidence it was exposed rather than changing it on a calendar.

What makes a password strong and unique?

Strength and uniqueness solve different problems. A strong password is difficult to guess for that account. A unique password has not been used anywhere else. You need both.

If one service is breached and its password database or a password entered on a fake login page becomes available, criminals can try the same email-and-password pair on banking, shopping, work and social accounts. This automated reuse attack is called password stuffing. A password that is excellent in isolation still puts every reused account at risk.

  • Unique: The complete credential is different for every account, not merely a different suffix.
  • Unpredictable: It is not based on your name, a child, a pet, a team, a quotation, a keyboard pattern, a season, or a predictable formula.
  • Long: More characters generally create a larger search space and make guessing more expensive.
  • Available when needed: It is stored in a password manager or another protected method so you do not have to shorten or reuse it.

No password is guaranteed to be unbreakable. Offline attackers can make large numbers of guesses against stolen password data and can use methods that make guessing more efficient. Length and randomness improve resistance; they do not remove the need for MFA, breach monitoring and sensible account recovery.

Use a password-manager generator as the default

A manager-generated credential is the easiest way to meet the uniqueness requirement without memorizing dozens of random strings. NIST recommends password managers for accounts that require passwords, and its current standard says verifiers should support password managers and autofill.

Set up a different generated password for each account

  1. Choose a manager with a built-in generator. Look for controls for length, character sets, passphrase generation, secure storage, autofill and MFA for the manager itself. The specific vendor matters less than whether these functions are present and maintained.
  2. Create the manager’s account carefully. Protect it with MFA or a passkey where available, and record its recovery method in a secure place. The manager is the gateway to your stored credentials, so its own login deserves more protection than an ordinary account.
  3. Open the account’s password-change or sign-up page. Use the manager’s generator rather than inventing a base word. Set the longest length the site accepts and use the generator’s random option.
  4. Save the result immediately. Store the username, website address and generated password in the correct entry before leaving the page. This prevents a unique password from becoming unusable simply because it was not recorded.
  5. Test autofill on the next sign-in. Confirm that the manager recognizes the correct domain and fills the intended username and password. Be cautious on look-alike domains and unexpected login pages.
  6. Repeat for reused credentials. If you have used one password on several services, change each account to its own generated value. Start with email, financial, work, cloud-storage and mobile-provider accounts because control of one of these can enable resets elsewhere.
  7. Keep the manager available on every device you actually use. A reliable sync and autofill experience reduces the temptation to create a memorable “master” password for multiple sites.

Features worth checking

  • A generator that can produce long random passwords and, when needed, random multi-word passphrases.
  • Autofill and paste support rather than a design that forces manual retyping.
  • MFA or passkey support for the manager account.
  • Encrypted storage and a clear recovery process.
  • Warnings for duplicate or exposed credentials, if offered. Treat warnings as prompts to change passwords, not as proof that an account is safe.

Do not choose a service because of an unverified security claim or a purported test. The important practice is generating and retaining a separate credential for each account.

If you must make a password manually, use a long passphrase

A passphrase can make length practical when a manager cannot be used, such as on a system where you must type a credential from memory. NIST explains that multiple words can be easier to remember. The words still need to be selected unpredictably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose words without creating a story an attacker can predict

  • Use several unrelated words rather than a quotation, lyric, proverb or sentence from your life.
  • Avoid names, birthdays, addresses, employers, school names, sports teams, destinations and other facts that can be found in public profiles.
  • Do not pick a phrase that describes the account or your current situation. An account-specific clue can become an account-specific guess.
  • If you can, use a random selection method instead of choosing words because they sound pleasant together. NIST does not prescribe a particular word-selection recipe; the requirement is unpredictability, not a fashionable format.
  • Do not reuse the passphrase on another service, even if you change one word or add a symbol.

Examples shown in an article should never be copied into a real account. A phrase that is memorable because it is a common saying is not equivalent to a phrase whose words were selected randomly.

When a site imposes a short limit

Some older services reject spaces, limit the maximum length or accept only a narrow set of characters. Use the longest credential the service permits, but do not compensate for a short limit by reusing the password elsewhere. Consider whether the service offers a passkey or another authentication factor that reduces reliance on the password.

Why predictable suffixes are not a safe compromise

A common habit is to memorize one base password and append something that identifies each account: a site name, a year, a number, an exclamation point or a required capital letter. The result may look different to a person while remaining easy for an attacker to model.

Attack tools do not have to try every possible random string first. They can start with passwords exposed in earlier breaches, common words and personal information, then apply likely transformations: capitalization, a trailing year, a digit, a symbol, a company name or a small change from a previous password. A construction such as base + site + year + symbol therefore creates a family of related guesses. If one member of that family is exposed, the others become easier to prioritize.

Changing only the suffix also creates a single point of failure. A thief who learns the pattern can target every account, and a breach at one service can reveal the base portion used elsewhere. The full password—not just the final characters—must be unique.

What to do when a form demands a capital, number and symbol

Satisfy the form so you can create the account, but do not mistake the checklist for evidence of strength. Generate a genuinely random password that happens to include the required character types, or choose an unpredictable passphrase that meets the site’s accepted format. Do not take a familiar password and add the same suffix pattern to every account.

NIST’s current standard explicitly says, “Verifiers and CSPs SHALL NOT impose other composition rules (e.g., requiring mixtures of different character types) for passwords.” The reason is behavioral: rigid recipes often produce recognizable mutations instead of random choices.

How long should a password be?

NIST Special Publication 800-63B-4 is the current standard for centrally verified passwords used as authentication factors. Its numbers are requirements for verifiers within that scope, not a promise that a password of a particular length defeats every attack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Use case or verifier behavior Current NIST requirement or guidance How to apply it
Password used as the sole authentication factor At least 15 characters Prefer a longer random value when the service accepts one.
Password used only as part of MFA At least 8 characters Do not shorten a password unnecessarily; MFA reduces but does not eliminate password risk.
Maximum length Verifiers should permit at least 64 characters A service that rejects a long generated value is imposing a usability and security limitation.
Characters Accept spaces and printing ASCII characters, and accept Unicode Users should not be forced into a tiny character set when the system can safely handle more.
Composition rules Do not require mixtures of character classes Length and unpredictability are more useful than a predictable recipe.

These central-verifier rules should not be applied mechanically to every credential. A phone unlock PIN or another device-local activation secret has a different security model. Follow the device maker’s guidance for those secrets while still avoiding obvious choices.

Why length helps, and what it cannot prove

Every additional unpredictable character increases the number of possible combinations. NIST’s consumer guidance gives illustrative calculations for lowercase letters: one character has 26 possible guesses, two have 676, and an eight-character lowercase password has about 200 billion combinations. At an assumed rate of 100 billion guesses per second, exhaustively trying 15 lowercase letters would take more than 500 years.

Those figures are mathematical illustrations from NIST, published in 2025, not measurements of a particular password cracker or a guarantee for a real account. They assume exhaustive guessing of a specified character set and rate. An attacker with an offline password database can try as many guesses as resources allow and can prioritize likely words, patterns and reused passwords. A long random password is therefore preferable to a long phrase that is famous, personal or formulaic.

Use MFA or a passkey in addition to the password

MFA requires another proof of control, such as an authenticator-app code, hardware token, biometric unlock or approval on a trusted device. Turn it on for important accounts even when the password is long and unique. A stolen password alone then may not be enough to sign in.

A passkey uses public-key cryptography and is unlocked through a device or credential manager. NIST describes passkeys as a way to avoid memorizing passwords. Choose one when the service supports it and the devices and recovery options fit your needs. Keep a secure recovery method so a lost device does not become a permanent lockout.

MFA does not make password reuse acceptable. Attackers can still use a reused password to attack accounts with weaker or absent MFA, and a compromised password may help them target reset or recovery flows.

When to change a password

Change a password when there is evidence of compromise: a service reports a breach, the password appears in an exposure notification, you entered it into a suspected phishing page, an unfamiliar device accessed the account, or you shared it with someone who should no longer have it. Change it immediately from a trusted device, then review active sessions, recovery addresses, forwarding rules and MFA methods.

NIST’s current standard says verifiers should not require periodic password changes without evidence of compromise. Calendar-based rotation can encourage predictable variations such as adding the next year or incrementing a digit. A unique, long password that has no sign of exposure does not become safer merely because 90 days have passed.

What to do after suspected exposure

  1. Secure the email account first. It often controls password-reset messages for other services. Change its password to a new, unique value and verify MFA and recovery details.
  2. Change the exposed credential everywhere it was used. Do not only alter the suffix. Replace the complete password on every account that shared it.
  3. Revoke active sessions and unknown devices. A password change may not invalidate every existing session.
  4. Inspect account changes. Look for unfamiliar forwarding rules, recovery addresses, API keys, payment details or newly added MFA devices.
  5. Report financial or identity-theft risk. Follow the affected service’s breach instructions and contact financial institutions through their official channels if relevant.
  6. Replace the pattern, not just the character. If you used a base-plus-suffix system, move to manager-generated credentials or unrelated random passphrases for all important accounts.

Password manager or manual passphrase?

Decision factor Manager-generated password Manual passphrase
Uniqueness across accounts Strong by default when you generate a new value for each entry. Requires deliberate selection and record-keeping for every account.
Unpredictability Random generation avoids familiar words and mutation patterns. Depends on how the words were selected; personal or quoted phrases are weaker.
Memorability burden You normally memorize only the manager’s protected credential. You must remember the passphrase or store it safely.
Service compatibility Works best when the site permits long values, paste and autofill. May be easier to type on a constrained system, but short limits still reduce options.
Best use Default choice for most online accounts. Fallback when a manager cannot be used or a credential must be memorized.

Neither method replaces MFA or makes reuse safe. The deciding question is whether the complete credential is unpredictable and different from every other account credential.

Guidance for websites and service operators

If you operate a login system, accept password-manager workflows instead of fighting them. NIST SP 800-63B-4 says verifiers should support password managers and autofill, allow at least 64 characters, accept spaces and Unicode, and avoid composition rules that force predictable transformations.

Check the full chosen password against a blocklist of commonly used, expected or compromised values. Comparing only individual substrings can reject harmless long passwords while allowing a predictable construction around a known word. NIST also notes that oversized blocklists add little benefit against online attacks already protected by rate controls; combine screening with throttling, secure password storage and MFA.

When rejecting a password, give useful guidance: state the maximum and minimum lengths, identify unsupported characters and explain that a common or compromised value cannot be used. Do not reveal enough detail to help an attacker test the account.

A practical checklist

  • Generate a random credential in a password manager whenever possible.
  • Save a different complete password for every account.
  • Use at least 15 characters for a centrally verified single-factor password when the service allows it; longer is preferable.
  • If you must memorize one, choose an unpredictable multi-word passphrase rather than a quotation or personal fact.
  • Never append an account name, year, digit or punctuation mark to a reused base password.
  • Meet a site’s character requirements without repeating the same mutation pattern elsewhere.
  • Turn on MFA and use a passkey where the service offers a suitable option.
  • Change credentials after evidence of exposure, and review sessions and recovery settings at the same time.
  • Do not perform calendar-based changes solely because a routine demands them.
