WhatsApp can turn a photo into a sticker without a separate editor: open a chat, tap the sticker icon, choose Create, select a photo, edit it, and tap Send. To reuse the result, add it to a new or existing named sticker pack. To give someone a complete pack, open the sticker tray, choose More (three dots), then Send. The labels can differ slightly between Android, iPhone, and app versions, but this is the current documented workflow.
What you need before creating a sticker
Use the latest version of WhatsApp for Android or iOS. WhatsApp says custom sticker packs are available on the latest Android and iOS versions; update WhatsApp through your phone’s app store if the creation or pack controls are missing. The built-in photo workflow does not require a separate sticker-making app, a computer, or a special image file.

- A photo already in your phone’s gallery, or permission to take a new photo.
- A current WhatsApp installation. Screen names and icon placement may vary by operating-system and app version.
Decide first whether you need one quick reaction or a collection that other people can browse. The in-chat creator is fastest for a single image. A named pack is better when you expect to reuse several reactions, while an imported pack is useful if you are preparing files outside WhatsApp. These routes overlap, but they are not interchangeable: the file specifications below apply to imported material, not to every photo you create directly in WhatsApp.

How to create a custom sticker from a photo
1. Open the sticker creator
- Open any WhatsApp individual or group chat.
- Tap the emoji/sticker button beside the message field.
- Open the Stickers section.
- Tap Create.
On some versions, WhatsApp presents the photo picker as Recents, followed by See more and Photos. These labels are the documented route, not a guarantee that every Android or iPhone screen will use identical wording. If you are in the emoji or GIF view, switch to the sticker tab before looking for Create.

2. Choose or take the image
- Choose a picture from the phone’s gallery. If WhatsApp offers a camera option, you can take a new picture instead.
- Wait for the preview to load. WhatsApp converts the selected image into a sticker-ready composition inside the chat composer.
Choose a clear subject with enough contrast against its background. A close-up face, object, or simple silhouette is usually easier to read at sticker size than a busy scene. The creator handles the conversion, so you do not have to resize the photo manually for this built-in route. If the first image is hard to recognize, go back and choose a picture with a simpler background rather than trying to compensate with lots of text or overlays.
3. Refine the sticker
The preview screen provides several optional controls:
- Preset: Pick a visual treatment offered by WhatsApp.
- Sticker or emoji: Layer another sticker or an emoji on top of the image.
- Text: Add a caption, reaction, name, or other wording.
- Drawing: Mark up the image with a freehand drawing.
Use these controls only when they improve the message. A short caption can clarify an otherwise ambiguous expression, while a small emoji can emphasize the reaction. Too many layers can hide the original subject. Review the composition at the preview stage: if the text is clipped, the subject is obscured, or an added element is misplaced, adjust it before sending.

When the result is ready, tap Send. The sticker is delivered in that chat like any other WhatsApp message. Creating it in a conversation does not restrict it to that conversation; you can organize it into a pack and use it elsewhere afterward.
How to save a sticker for reuse
Sending a sticker does not by itself create a named collection. To keep a custom sticker organized, add it to a sticker pack. This is the clearest way to make a personal reaction available from the tray later, especially if you create several versions of the same theme.
Add a sticker to a new or existing pack
- Open the sticker tray in a chat, or tap a sticker in a conversation to view its options.
- Tap and hold the sticker in the tray, or tap the sticker itself in the chat.
- Choose Add to sticker pack.
- Select an existing pack, or choose New to create one.
- If you create a pack, enter a pack name and tap Save.
The pack name is the label you will see when browsing your sticker collections. Use a descriptive name such as “Family reactions” or “Work replies” if you plan to create several packs. Naming packs by purpose makes the correct tab easier to identify when you are replying quickly.
After saving, return to the sticker tray and check the relevant pack tab. If the new item is not immediately obvious, close and reopen the tray and check that you completed the final Save action rather than only sending the image.

Edit an existing pack
WhatsApp’s documented editing route lets you add stickers to a pack that already exists:
- Open the sticker tray and choose Edit.
- Select the pack you want to change.
- Select the stickers to add.
- Tap the move-to-top control to confirm the change.
The available documentation establishes saving stickers into packs and editing packs. It does not establish one universal sequence for turning every sticker received from another person into a favorite. Adding a sticker to a pack and favoriting a sticker are separate behaviors, and the controls can differ by version. If your goal is simply to keep a sticker handy, use the pack workflow that your version displays instead of assuming that a favorite control will be present.
How to send an individual sticker
Once a sticker is created or saved, send it from the tray:
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the emoji/sticker button and open Stickers.
- Choose the pack containing the sticker.
- Tap the sticker once to send it.
A sticker created in one conversation can be reused in other chats after it has been added to a pack and appears in your tray. You do not need to recreate the image for each recipient. For a one-off response, sending the individual sticker keeps the conversation focused; for a group that wants a whole set, share the pack instead.

WhatsApp supports sharing a pack directly in a chat. Meta’s official announcement, updated April 16, 2025, says: “You can now create your own sticker packs and share them directly in your chats, so your friends and family can all use your custom stickers to express themselves.”
- Open the one-to-one or group chat where you want to share the pack.
- Tap the emoji/sticker button.
- Choose Stickers.
- Tap More, shown as three horizontal dots.
- Choose Send.
- Select the pack you want to share and confirm the message.
Use the pack-sharing route when several people should have access to the same collection rather than sending each sticker separately. The recipient receives the pack through the chat and can use the stickers from that shared collection, subject to WhatsApp’s current app behavior and account availability. If More or Send is missing, verify that WhatsApp is up to date and that you are viewing the sticker tray, not the emoji or GIF panel.
Sticker file requirements for imported packs
The built-in photo creator handles its own formatting. The specifications below matter when you assemble or import a pack with a sticker-maker tool or prepared image files. They are not extra steps required for the ordinary Create-from-photo workflow.

Both types use a 512 × 512-pixel canvas, but their size limits and pack rules differ. A pack cannot mix static and animated stickers under the documented animated-pack rule: if the pack is animated, all stickers in it must be animated. Staying under the file-size ceiling is a per-sticker requirement, not merely a total size target for the pack.
If an imported file is rejected, check the pixel dimensions first, then the individual file size, then the number and type of stickers in the pack. Reducing a static image below 100 KB does not make it suitable for an animated pack, and a short animation still has to meet the 500 KB limit and the 10-second maximum.
Choosing the right creation method

For a single reaction image, the in-app photo route is the least complicated: it avoids file preparation and keeps editing and sending in one place. Use an imported pack when you need a larger, deliberately organized collection or files prepared in advance. Choose AI only when the feature is visible in your account and a generated concept is more useful than a specific personal photo.
Optional: create a sticker with WhatsApp’s AI feature
WhatsApp separately documents AI sticker generation. In the sticker area, type a description and wait for the generated choices. The feature can return up to four options for one prompt; tap the option you want to send.
Supported description languages listed by WhatsApp are English, Indonesian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Availability is limited to certain countries, so the AI control may not appear even when ordinary photo stickers work. A generated sticker that you send appears in the sticker tray for later sharing, according to WhatsApp’s AI sticker guidance.

Using a third-party pack workflow without getting stuck
WhatsApp maintains sample Android and iOS sticker-pack applications and notes that sticker-maker apps can help create and import packs. The exact screens depend on the tool you choose, so treat the process as a general import path rather than a promise that every app uses the same buttons. No particular third-party app is required or endorsed for the basic task.

- Keep each file below the applicable 100 KB static or 500 KB animated limit.
- For an animated pack, keep total animation duration within 10 seconds and use animated stickers throughout the pack.
- Use the pack tool’s import or add-to-WhatsApp control.
- Open WhatsApp and verify that the pack appears in the sticker tray.
- Share it from a chat using More and Send.
No third-party app is required for an individual photo sticker. An external tool is relevant only when you need pack assembly or import features that the in-chat creator does not provide. Before committing to a tool, check that it can export the required dimensions and per-file limits; a polished design is not useful if WhatsApp rejects the resulting files.

Create is not visible
- Update WhatsApp from the phone’s app store.
- Reopen a chat, tap the emoji/sticker button, and check the Stickers section rather than the emoji or GIF section.
- Allow WhatsApp access to the photos you want to use in the phone’s privacy settings.
- Remember that the documented labels can differ by Android, iOS, and app release.
WhatsApp describes custom sticker packs as a feature of the latest Android and iOS versions, so an older installation is the first thing to rule out. If the control still does not appear after updating, the wording or placement may simply differ on your platform; look for Create inside the sticker tray rather than expecting an identical screenshot.

- Open the sticker tray and check each pack tab.
- Confirm that you selected Add to sticker pack and completed Save; merely sending a sticker does not name or organize a pack.
- If you expected a favorite, check whether your version exposes a separate favorites control instead of assuming that pack membership and favorites are the same.
Also check that you are using the same WhatsApp account and device where the pack was created. If you edited a pack, use the move-to-top control described by WhatsApp to finish the edit, then reopen the tray.
An imported sticker or pack is rejected
- Check that the canvas is exactly 512 × 512 pixels.
- For static stickers, reduce the file to 100 KB or less.
- For animated stickers, stay at or below 500 KB and keep animation at no more than 10 seconds.
- Do not mix static and animated stickers in a pack governed by the animated-pack rule.
- Verify that the pack does not exceed 30 stickers of its applicable type.
Check every file individually. One oversized sticker or one static file in an otherwise animated collection can prevent the pack from meeting the documented rules. If you only need one image, return to the built-in photo creator and avoid the import process entirely.
Legal and responsible sticker use
WhatsApp says stickers must be legal, authorized, and acceptable under its terms. Use photos, illustrations, logos, and other material that you created yourself or have permission to use. Do not assume that an image found online is free to turn into a sticker, particularly when you plan to distribute a pack to a group.
Before sharing a personal photo, consider whether everyone pictured has agreed to its distribution. A sticker can be forwarded or reused after it leaves your chat, so avoid private information, identification documents, addresses, or images that could embarrass someone. The same care applies to AI-generated content and imported artwork: you remain responsible for what you send and share.
A practical workflow for building a reusable collection
- Create and test one sticker from a photo in a private chat.
- Add successful designs to a clearly named new pack instead of creating several unnamed collections.
- Keep static reactions together and reserve an animated pack for animated files that meet the stricter limits.
- Send individual stickers when the recipient needs one reaction; send the pack when several people should browse the whole collection.
- Review old packs periodically and edit them so frequently used stickers remain easy to reach.
This approach keeps the fast in-chat creator for spontaneous images while preserving a separate, orderly collection for stickers you expect to reuse. It also gives you a simple decision rule: use Create for speed, packs for organization, imported files for planned collections, and AI only when its availability and languages suit your situation.
