Create a managed profile in the Apple TV app to give a child or other household member a separate watchlist, watch history and recommendations. For a child, choose the Kid setting and configure its content and purchase restrictions. You do not need Family Sharing just to create a managed Apple TV app profile.
Choose the right kind of profile
The Apple TV app offers two practical options. A managed profile is created by an Apple Account profile and does not require the household member to sign in with their own Apple Account. Apple allows up to five managed profiles per Apple Account profile. An Apple Account profile is for someone who should sign in to the app using their own Apple Account. The available settings and steps may differ by device.

| Profile type | Best for | Child restrictions |
|---|---|---|
| Managed profile | A household member who does not need their own Apple Account sign-in in the Apple TV app. | The manager can select Kid and configure profile restrictions. |
| Apple Account profile | A family member who should sign in to the Apple TV app with their own Apple Account. | Settings shown may differ from those for managed profiles. |
Apple describes profiles as giving each household member a separate watchlist, watch history and personalized recommendations. See Apple’s guide to adding and managing profiles on TVs and living-room devices.
Create a managed profile for a child
- Open the Apple TV app on a supported television or living-room device.
- Open the sidebar, select the profile at the top and choose Add Profile. If that option is not there, try Settings > Profiles > Add New Profile.
- Choose Create Profile, enter the child’s name and select an image.
- On the setup screen, choose Kid. Accept the suggested restrictions or choose the customization option to set permitted movie and TV categories and decide whether purchases and rentals are allowed.
- If prompted to choose the account that manages the profile, select the appropriate managing Apple Account profile.
- Select Done.
Apple’s guides use both “Kid” and “Child” for this setting. The wording and menu path can vary by device; follow the equivalent profile setup option on your screen.

Add a profile for a family member with an Apple Account
Choose Add Profile and follow the prompts to sign in with the family member’s Apple Account. On supported devices, the app offers QR-assisted sign-in; manual sign-in is also available. On Apple TV 4K, you can also add a profile through Settings or Control Center. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K profile instructions for device-specific steps.
Change a profile’s restrictions or require a code
Adjust content and purchase restrictions
In the Apple TV app, open Settings > Profiles, select the profile, then choose Restrictions. Where available, adjust movie and TV ratings and whether purchases or rentals are allowed. A Kid profile filters Apple TV app content and search results according to the restrictions set by its manager; it does not automatically control other apps installed on the television.

Protect profile access with a four-digit code
In Settings > Profiles, select the profile, choose Require 4-Digit Code and complete any account confirmation steps. This code controls access when switching profiles and helps protect the profile’s watch history, recommendations and watchlist. It is separate from content restrictions: use the restrictions to filter what the profile can watch, and the code to limit access to the profile.

Set broader restrictions on Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K has device-level controls under Settings > General > Restrictions. These can affect watching, downloads, playback from search results and purchases. Apple cautions that device restrictions may not apply to downloaded apps, so check the controls inside individual apps when needed. Details are in Apple’s Apple TV 4K restrictions guide.

A managed profile separates one person’s experience inside the Apple TV app. Family Sharing is an Apple family group for sharing eligible services and purchases and managing child accounts and parental controls. It is a separate feature, not a prerequisite for creating a managed child profile. Apple explains the distinction in its Family Sharing guide for Apple TV 4K.

Apple documents profiles for supported smart TVs, streaming devices, gaming consoles and Apple TV 4K. Apple TV 4K hardware is not required if the Apple TV app is available on a device you already own. Features, compatible devices and content availability vary by device and country or region; if the labels above do not match your screen, look for the equivalent Profiles settings in the app or device menus.
