How to Create Multilingual Forms in WordPress

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To serve a WordPress form in multiple languages, translate the form itself—not just the page around it. In the documented WPForms and WPML workflow, you build one complete source-language form, translate it through WPML, then place the same form block or shortcode on each translated page. Labels, choices, validation messages, confirmations, notification emails, and redirect destinations all need review in every language.

Choose how your WordPress site will handle languages

First decide which language is the site’s default and which additional languages visitors can use. WPML supports language URLs in directories, on separate domains or subdomains, or through query parameters. Its documentation, updated February 19, 2026, lists 65 pre-configured languages and also describes creating custom languages. The URL format and a visible language switcher shape how visitors move between versions of your site.

For forms, plugin compatibility matters as much as the site’s general translation setup. A dedicated connector connects form fields and operational text to the translation workflow; support varies by form builder.

Translate a WPForms form with WPML

This workflow uses WPForms with WPML, WPML String Translation, and the WPForms Multilingual add-on. WPML’s guide says you do not need a separate form for each language: the translated page determines which translated version is displayed.

1,000 Books to Read Before You Die: A Life-Changing List
  • Book - 1, 000 books to read before you die: a life-changing list (1000 before you die)
  • Language: english
  • Binding: hardcover
  1. Set up languages in WPML. Choose the default language and add the languages your site needs. Select the URL format and configure a language switcher if visitors need to move between language versions.
  2. Install and activate the integrations. Activate WPForms, WPML, WPML String Translation, and the WPForms Multilingual add-on.
  3. Finish the form in its source language. Add all fields and choices, then configure multi-page steps, conditional logic, validation, confirmations, notifications, payment add-ons, and marketing integrations before sending the form for translation. Changes made later may require translation updates.
  4. Send the form for translation. In WPML → Translations → Dashboard, find the form under WPForms and send it to translation. WPML’s automatic translation workflow can also pick up new or changed forms.
  5. Put the same form on each translated page. Add the same WPForms block or use the same shortcode, such as [wpforms id="X"], on each language version of the page. In this workflow, a separate form ID for every language is unnecessary.

WPML describes the result this way: “When a visitor opens the translated page, WPForms Multilingual serves the form in the visitor’s language automatically – same form ID, same shortcode, translated content.” See WPML’s WPForms translation guide.

Translate the form’s operational text

A translated field label is only part of a usable form. Review the text and behavior visitors encounter before and after submission, including:

  • Field labels, descriptions, dropdown choices, and conditional options.
  • Required-field notices and other validation messages.
  • Confirmation messages or redirect destinations.
  • Notification recipients, email subjects, and message bodies.
  • User-registration confirmation email text, if the form uses registration.

Check that email routing is correct for each language and that translated confirmation or redirect destinations lead to the appropriate page.

Translate a Contact Form 7 form with WPML

For Contact Form 7, use Contact Form 7 with WPML, WPML String Translation, and WPML Multilingual for CF7. Create the source form, then translate its form tags and the text that accompanies submissions. The connector links each translation to its source form and uses the language of the translated page to select the right version.

Include the following in the translation review:

  • Text in the form and the Messages tab.
  • Mail templates, including subject and body text.
  • Acceptance and quiz text.
  • Pipe-separated choice values.
  • Supported submission integrations used by the form.

Do not assume that translating the page or the visible field labels also translates the messages and email templates.

How WPML, TranslatePress, and Polylang differ for multilingual forms

Plugin What the documented setup offers What to verify for your form
WPML Dedicated form connectors are documented for WPForms, Gravity Forms, Ninja Forms, and Contact Form 7. The WPForms workflow supports translating a single source form for use on translated pages. Confirm that a connector exists for your specific form plugin and covers the fields and operational strings your form uses.
TranslatePress Languages are configured under Settings → TranslatePress. Custom-language settings can include a language code, native name, automatic-translation code, flag URL, and right-to-left (RTL) setting. Check compatibility with the chosen form builder and how its form text and operational strings are handled in TranslatePress’s front-end translation workflow.
Polylang The documented basic setup is to activate the plugin, create languages, and add a language-switcher widget. Verify the exact form-builder integration before relying on it for a production form.

WPML has the clearest documented form-specific workflows among these options in the material cited here. That does not establish that it is the right choice for every site; choose based on your form plugin, translation workflow, language URL needs, and the operational text the connector supports.

Test every language before publishing

Automatic translation can speed up the initial work, but it does not confirm that a form is accurate or behaves correctly. Review each language version as a visitor would, including the full submission journey.
