First decide whether the invoice is for a WooCommerce order or for service work outside your store. WooCommerce invoice extensions create documents from orders; they are not automatically tools for general freelance billing. For project invoices, use a standalone invoicing plugin that explicitly supports creating and managing client invoices.
Do you use WooCommerce?
If your customer placed an order through your WooCommerce store, an order-linked PDF invoice extension is the direct fit. WooCommerce’s PDF Invoices documentation describes generating customizable PDFs, attaching them to paid or completed order emails, and letting customers download them from the thank-you page or their orders area. It also covers resending an order email and creating invoices for some existing completed orders.
Exact settings and behavior depend on the extension. Consult its current instructions to confirm when it creates an invoice, which emails can include the PDF, whether existing orders are supported, and how customers can retrieve past documents.
Set up the order invoice workflow
- Choose an extension for your store. Use a trusted source, then check its current WordPress and WooCommerce compatibility, support and maintenance information, and cost before installing. The PDF Invoices & Packing Slips for WooCommerce listing is one place to review an option; a directory listing is not an independent quality assessment.
- Enter business details. Add the company name, address, email, and logo if the extension supports it. Check how these details appear on the generated document.
- Configure numbering and appearance. Set the invoice-number format and file name where available, and choose a template or theme. Supported variables and customization controls vary by extension.
- Set invoice timing and delivery. Choose the order event that should trigger an invoice, such as processing or completed, and select which order emails should carry the PDF. WooCommerce’s invoice and credit note documentation describes these types of controls, including customer downloads and an optional credit note for a refunded order when the relevant setting is enabled.
- Generate and inspect a test PDF. Where the extension provides a test-generation feature, use it to check the business details, numbering, layout, and file before sending a real invoice. Place a test order if needed to verify the email attachment and customer download path.
Some extensions are narrower than a general order-invoice workflow. For example, WooCommerce’s Invoice Payment Method documentation describes a PDF attached to orders placed using that payment method; that is not a standalone invoicing system for unrelated client projects.

Need to invoice for services?
When the work is not represented by a WooCommerce order—such as consulting, design, or a project billed directly—look for a standalone WordPress invoicing plugin. Confirm that it lets you create invoices manually and manage client records; a PDF extension that only processes store orders will not meet that need.
For example, the WordPress.org listing for Direct Invoices describes invoice and client management in the dashboard, payment requests, payment-status tracking, PDF generation, and payment options including Stripe and WooCommerce Checkout. The listing describes advertised functionality; it does not establish the plugin’s quality, current maintenance, or fit for a particular business.

The listing for Invoice Maker — Payments with Stripe describes creating and managing invoices in wp-admin, client invitations, and Stripe Connect support for hosted checkout. Check the current listing and product documentation to confirm availability and whether those features suit your workflow.
Check the fit before installing
- Invoice origin: Can you create invoices for projects without a WooCommerce order?
- Client administration: Does it save client details and track invoice status if you need those features?
- Delivery and documents: Does it generate a PDF, send it to the client, provide a portal or download, or support the combination you require?
- Payment handling: Does it integrate with a gateway you can use, or does it only create a payment request? Verify regional availability and current integration requirements.
- Operational fit: Review current WordPress compatibility, support and maintenance, data handling, and any extension cost before relying on it.
What should you check before sending the first invoice?
Preview a sample invoice and verify the client and business details, invoice number, line items, totals, payment instructions, PDF readability, and the delivery path. If the plugin supports payment processing, confirm the checkout works as expected before using it with a client.

Invoice requirements are not universal. The product documentation cited here does not establish the legally required fields, tax disclosures, numbering rules, retention periods, or correction process for your business. Check the rules for your jurisdiction with the relevant tax authority or a qualified professional; do not assume a plugin template is legally compliant just because it generates a PDF.
