The reliable way to create social-media images is to choose the platform canvas first, build one clear message with a small visual system, verify contrast and image rights, then export and preview the actual upload. Start with the destination rather than a generic square: the wrong dimensions can stretch, blur, or crop important content.
1. Define the post before opening a design tool
Write down four decisions:
- Objective: stop scrolling, explain a point, announce something, or drive a click.
- Audience: identify what this group already knows and what action you want next.
- Platform: select the first channel and its current specifications.
- Primary message: reduce the image to one sentence. Supporting copy should clarify that sentence, not compete with it.
A single-purpose image is easier to read in a fast-moving feed and easier to adapt for several channels.
2. Choose the canvas and safe area
Adobe’s current examples (2025) illustrate why channel-specific sizing matters:
| Use | Example canvas | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Instagram image | 1080 × 1080 px | Square composition; keep text away from edges in case of feed cropping. |
| Instagram Story | 1080 × 1920 px | Vertical composition; reserve space for interface controls at the top and bottom. |
| Facebook feed post | 1200 × 630 px | Wide composition; test headline wrapping at phone size. |
These are useful starting points, not permanent platform guarantees. Recheck the destination’s specifications before publishing because limits and display treatments change. If you need several channels, design a master layout with generous margins, then make channel-specific crops rather than forcing one file everywhere.

3. Establish a small visual system
Define two or three colors, one or two typefaces, a logo treatment, image style, spacing rule, and tone. Adobe recommends documenting tone, mood, allowed image treatments, logo use, copy over images, and context in brand guidance. A compact system prevents every post from becoming a new design exercise.
Color and type
Use one dominant background, one contrasting text color, and an accent for actions or key data. Choose a typeface with distinct weights and test lowercase and numerals. Avoid placing thin text over detailed photography; add a solid or translucent panel when necessary.
Logo and imagery
Use the same logo position and clear space in each template. Give the image one focal subject or shape. Multiple competing photos, badges, and decorative effects make the intended message harder to find.
4. Build hierarchy for a small screen
- Set the headline in the largest, highest-contrast type.
- Place one focal image or shape that reinforces the headline.
- Add only the supporting detail needed to understand the post.
- Leave safe margins for feed crops, buttons, profile overlays, and Story controls.
- View the design at phone size before polishing desktop details.
Read the image from a distance or reduce the zoom to roughly a thumbnail. If the headline disappears, remove words, enlarge it, or simplify the background.
5. Meet accessibility requirements
Section508.gov guidance from the U.S. General Services Administration recommends a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for regular text and 3:1 for large text, excluding logos and brand names. Check every text/background pair, including text over photos.
- Do not put essential instructions, prices, dates, or links only inside a decorative image.
- Add concise alt text through the platform’s image-description control. Describe the subject and the information that matters; do not begin with “image of.”
- Use plain language and sufficient line spacing. Avoid communicating meaning by color alone.
6. Confirm image and font rights
Meta’s guidance says you may post only content that does not violate another person’s intellectual-property rights. Ask whether you created the asset, have permission, qualify for an exception, or are using public-domain material. Finding an image online, modifying it, adding credit or a disclaimer, or buying a copy does not automatically make the use lawful.
Canva permits its content in marketing and social-media designs, but its license prohibits reselling or redistributing Canva content as standalone material. Keep records of stock licenses, creator permissions, project files, and AI prompts. Check the license for every font, photograph, illustration, template element, and music-linked visual.
7. Choose a practical design tool
| Need | Canva | Adobe Express |
|---|---|---|
| Channel resizing | Templates and resizing workflows documented by Canva | Resizing and previews for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, and Pinterest documented by Adobe |
| Reusable brand controls | Template and content workflow; follow Canva’s license | Brand guidance and reusable design workflows |
| Export quality | PNG is preferable for text and flat graphics; JPG suits photos when size matters | Choose output based on design and destination |
| Accessibility | Verify contrast and alt text in your publishing workflow | Verify contrast and alt text in your publishing workflow |
| Preview and collaboration | Use the editor and destination composer to review | Resize and preview per channel before publishing |
The best choice depends on your existing brand assets, collaboration needs, licensing obligations, and whether you need one-click channel variants. Neither tool removes the need to inspect the final upload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems8. Export without introducing blur
Canva notes that Facebook, Instagram, and X compress uploads. Begin with a high-quality source at the intended dimensions. Prefer PNG for typography, logos, screenshots, and flat graphics; use JPG for photographic posts when a smaller file is more useful. Export once at the target size instead of repeatedly resizing an already compressed file.
- Download the exported file rather than judging only the editor preview.
- Inspect it at 100% zoom for fuzzy type, halos, unintended transparency, and clipped edges.
- Confirm pixel dimensions and color appearance.
- Upload through the platform’s composer and inspect its preview.
If a Canva image looks blurry, check that the source image is large enough, that you did not enlarge a low-resolution asset, and that the downloaded file—not a browser thumbnail—is being evaluated. Platform compression can still soften fine detail, so favor bold type and simple shapes.

9. Adapt, preview, and publish
Keep the message, colors, type, and logo consistent while changing the crop, line breaks, and safe areas for each channel. Adobe describes workflows that resize and preview for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, and Pinterest. Preview in a phone-sized view and, when possible, in the actual composer. Check the first line, focal subject, call to action, and any interface overlap.
10. Handle AI-generated artwork responsibly
Meta says it is working with C2PA and IPTC indicators and labels detected AI-generated images on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Keep prompts and project notes, avoid deceptive photorealistic claims, and review the destination platform’s current disclosure controls. A label or provenance record does not replace checking rights to reference images, logos, people, or generated likenesses.

If the image you need is a live webpage, report, dashboard, or product page, ScreenshotNeo can capture it through one request instead of maintaining browser automation. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Text is cut off
Reopen the channel-specific canvas, move copy inside the safe area, and preview in the composer. A square master cannot be treated as a finished Story or wide feed image.
Rank #4
The upload is soft or pixelated
Replace undersized source assets, export at the destination dimensions, choose PNG for text-heavy work, and inspect the downloaded file at 100% before upload.
Text is hard to read
Measure contrast, simplify the background, add an opaque panel, or increase type size. Check regular and large text against the 4.5:1 and 3:1 targets.
A stock or template element is disputed
Pause publication, locate the license or permission, and remove or replace the asset if the permitted use is unclear. Credit alone is not a substitute for permission.
AI labeling appears unexpectedly
Keep provenance notes, check the platform’s current disclosure settings, and ensure the image does not make a deceptive claim about a real event or person.

Should every platform receive an identical image file?
No. Keep the message and visual system consistent, but create channel-specific crops, line breaks, and safe areas.
When should I use PNG instead of JPG?
Use PNG for text, logos, screenshots, and flat graphics; use JPG for photographic posts when reducing file size is important.
Is adding credit enough to use someone else’s image?
No. Confirm that you created it, have permission, qualify for an exception, or are using public-domain material.
