On a supported Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, you can turn up to 15 seconds of a video or other moving content on your screen into a GIF without installing a GIF-maker app. Open the Edge panel, choose Smart Select—called AI Select on some newer software—select the area, choose More options → Create GIF, record, and save.
What this Samsung feature does
Smart Select captures a rectangle or other selected area of motion playing on your display. It can be useful for a browser video, social-media clip, animation, game sequence, video message, or locally stored video. You choose both the part of the screen and the moment to record; it does not automatically convert an entire video file.
Samsung documents the feature for compatible Galaxy phones and tablets, but availability varies by model, region, One UI release, Edge-panel implementation, and Samsung Capture version. Samsung’s current instructions are at its screen-capture guide.
Check these requirements first
- A supported Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet with a sufficiently recent One UI release. Samsung’s redesigned Edge-panel guidance centers on One UI 6.1.1 or later; a separate Samsung AI Select guide specifies One UI 7.0 or later for some models.
- Edge panels enabled.
- The Samsung Capture app updated through the Galaxy Store. Samsung has cited versions such as 5.8.64.4, and 5.8.61.4 for Tab S10, but app versions change by model and region.
- A video or animation currently playing on the screen.
To see your software version, open Settings → About phone → Software information. These requirements are not a promise that every Galaxy A, S, Note, or Z model supports GIF capture.

How to create the GIF
- Open and start the source. Open the video or animation and position playback just before the action you want. Start playback when you are ready.
- Open Edge panels. Swipe inward from the Edge-panel handle. If no handle appears, go to Settings → Display → Edge panels and turn the feature on.
- Launch Smart Select or AI Select. Use whichever label your phone shows. On newer layouts, the tool is usually inside the Apps panel rather than a separate Smart Select panel. If needed, open the Apps panel’s edit/settings control and add or locate it.
- Select the moving area. Draw around the subject, or tap an on-screen object when your version offers that option. Drag the corners and edges to resize and reposition the frame.
- Open the GIF command. Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then tap Create GIF.
- Choose quality. Select High quality for more detail or Standard quality for a smaller, easier-to-share file. Samsung does not publish universal dimensions or file sizes for these choices.
- Record. Tap Record and let the selected action play. The documented maximum is 15 seconds.
- Stop and finish. Tap Stop. On the result screen, tap Save to store the GIF in Gallery, or use one of the other available actions.
On a Galaxy device with an S Pen, you can use Air command → Smart Select or AI Select instead of opening Edge panels, then follow the same selection, quality, recording, and saving steps.

Smart Select or AI Select? Why the name changed
Smart Select is the older and still widely used name. Samsung says that on devices running One UI 6.1.1 or later, it renamed the function AI Select while retaining the underlying screen-selection capability. Another Samsung support page says AI Select requires One UI 7.0 or higher on some compatible devices, so follow the label and software guidance shown on your own Galaxy. Creating this GIF does not require an AI subscription.
If Smart Select is missing from Edge panels
On the redesigned Edge panel, Samsung moved Smart Select into the Apps panel and removed the former standalone panel shortcut. Open the Edge panel, switch to Apps, and use its edit/settings control to locate the tool. Samsung notes that the settings icon may only remain visible briefly after opening the panel, so reopen it and act promptly if necessary. See Samsung’s updated Edge-panel instructions.

When “Create GIF” is not available
- Confirm that a video or animation is actually playing and that the selected frame covers it.
- Open the selection’s More options menu; Create GIF may not be a top-level button.
- Update Samsung Capture in the Galaxy Store, then update the Galaxy Store itself if an update is offered.
- Install available phone software updates and reopen Smart Select or AI Select.
- If it still does not appear, check model and regional support. Samsung has documented cases where a Samsung Capture update restored the GIF function after a One UI 6.1.1 configuration made it unavailable.
Samsung’s regional pages identify Capture versions as examples, not permanent universal requirements. Settings and supported models can differ by location.
Why the recording may be blank, frozen, or cut off
- Playback has not started: begin the video before tapping Record, or reposition the source and try again.
- Protected content: some apps block screen capture because of copyright or DRM restrictions. Samsung describes these restrictions generally in its screen-recording guidance; behavior depends on the app and device.
- Wrong selection: move or resize the frame so it covers the moving content, not an empty part of the display.
- Outdated software: update Samsung Capture and the phone, then relaunch the tool.
- Length limit: Smart Select GIF recording stops at 15 seconds. For a longer moment, make multiple GIFs or record a video with Samsung Screen recorder and edit it separately.
Quality, size, and audio trade-offs
Use High quality when detail matters and Standard quality when you need easier sharing. A smaller selection and shorter recording also reduce the amount of data, but Samsung provides no universal megabyte formula. GIFs made this way are intended as silent animations: do not expect the source video’s audio to be included. An older Samsung Galaxy manual explicitly says sound is not recorded during video-area GIF capture, and current instructions do not advertise audio capture.

Make cleaner, smaller GIFs
- Pause or cue the source just before the key movement.
- Select only the subject instead of the entire display.
- Keep the loop as short as the message requires.
- Choose Standard quality for chats or services that compress uploads.
- Save the result first, then use a reputable editor or a messaging app’s built-in compression if it remains too large.

For basic cropped, silent reactions and short loops, Smart Select or AI Select is the quickest built-in option and requires no third-party GIF-maker installation.
