The most reliable approach is to create one editable SVG master, keep the subject and Debian mark inside a crop-safe central area, and test that design at all four aspect ratios in Debian’s artwork guidance: 5:4, 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9. Export PNG versions only when a particular desktop or delivery workflow needs them.
Do not judge the design only on its full canvas. A wallpaper can look balanced at its native ratio and lose its focal point when a desktop environment crops the sides or top and bottom. Build the composition around the crops you must support, then verify every target separately.

What Debian’s wallpaper guidance actually asks for
Debian’s artwork requirements identify four example target ratios for desktop wallpaper: 5:4, 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9. The examples are technical crop targets, not statistics about which monitor sizes are most common.

Debian’s desktop-base documentation allows either PNG or SVG assets and notes that a single version is acceptable when cropping does not damage the design. That means you can maintain one flexible master instead of automatically drawing four unrelated wallpapers.

Debian’s artwork coordination guidance describes the desired result as “pleasant, yet unintrusive” and aims for artwork that works with GNOME, KDE, and Xfce. Treat that as a design objective: the background should establish a Debian identity without competing with icons, panels, dialogs, or application windows.
Map the four required crops before drawing
| Aspect ratio | Debian example sizes | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| 5:4 | 1280×1024 or 2560×2048 | A squarer frame that removes more from a wide composition’s sides. |
| 4:3 | 1600×1200 or 2048×1536 | Whether the subject remains centered and the vertical balance still works. |
| 16:10 | 1920×1200 or 2560×1600 | Whether extra height creates empty space or pushes the focal point too high. |
| 16:9 | 1920×1080 | Whether a wide frame leaves enough breathing room around the subject and logo. |
These dimensions come from Debian’s published artwork examples. They are not a complete list of current desktop resolutions, so use the ratios as the compatibility requirement and treat the pixel sizes as preview or export examples.
Understand what cropping does
When a desktop fills a screen with an image of a different ratio, it normally scales the image until the frame is covered, then removes the excess area. A wide 16:9 master shown in a 5:4 frame loses horizontal content; a tall 5:4 master shown in 16:9 loses vertical content. The exact anchor can depend on the desktop’s wallpaper setting, so do not rely on an edge element surviving.

Draw four crop rectangles over a copy of your master. Keep the rectangles aligned to the same visual center and compare them at equal display size. This makes the loss visible before you export anything.

Create a crop-safe area
- Choose the visual center. Place the primary subject near the center of the shared area rather than at a corner or along an edge.
- Reserve edge margins. Leave generous empty space around the subject, Debian mark, and any words. The exact margin is a design choice; the requirement is that those elements remain visible in every target crop.
- Keep important shapes self-contained. Do not let a distinctive object depend on a detail that exists only in the outermost strip of the canvas.
- Let secondary texture reach the edges. Gradients, particles, and broad color fields can be clipped without making the image feel broken.
- Review each ratio independently. A safe area is useful only if the four actual crops still have a convincing hierarchy.
Build an editable SVG master
Start with an SVG document large enough for your intended exports. The exact working pixel equivalent is up to you; SVG preserves vectors and can be rendered at multiple sizes. Keep the original file as the authoritative source and make exported PNGs disposable derivatives.
Use a layer structure that survives future edits
- Background layer: a flat color, gradient, or very low-contrast texture that can extend beyond every crop.
- Atmosphere layer: broad shapes, shadows, or abstract forms that add depth without creating high-frequency noise behind desktop icons.
- Focal subject layer: the object or motif that communicates the theme. Group it so it can be moved as one unit when crop tests reveal a problem.
- Debian mark layer: keep the logo separate from decorative geometry and text. This lets you test a version with no wordmark or move the mark without rebuilding the artwork.
- Optional lettering layer: include only wording that remains useful at a glance and survives all crops. Convert carefully if a contribution workflow requires predictable rendering, but retain editable text or documented source assets where possible.
- Guides and crop rectangles: keep non-exporting guides in the source file so later contributors can repeat the four-ratio review.
Use vector paths for the subject and logo whenever practical. Raster textures can be embedded or linked, but linked files make the source harder for another contributor to modify. If you use raster elements, keep a copy of each original asset with the source package and record its license.
Design the hierarchy before polishing
At thumbnail size, a viewer should see one dominant shape, one supporting color or light direction, and a quiet field for desktop controls. If every region has equal contrast, icons and windows will fight the wallpaper. Put detail where it reinforces the focal subject, not where a crop may remove it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not place essential lettering across an area that can be hidden by a panel or launcher. Desktop environments differ in panel position and size, so wording should be optional rather than the only way to understand the artwork.

SVG or PNG: choose a delivery format deliberately
| Choice | Strengths | Limitations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| SVG | Editable vector source, resolution-independent rendering, easy repositioning of crop-sensitive elements. | Rendering can vary with software, embedded fonts, filters, or unsupported features. | The master file and any desktop workflow that accepts SVG. |
| PNG | Predictable pixels, broad compatibility, straightforward previewing and packaging. | Each exported size is fixed; later changes require a new render. | Fallback delivery, testing, or environments that do not load SVG. |
Debian’s recommendation is to use SVG, while the desktop-base README documents PNG and SVG as acceptable wallpaper assets. The practical compromise is to preserve SVG as the editable source and render PNG files for compatibility checks or distribution when needed.
Test the actual crops, not just the full artwork
Debian’s documentation specifies the target ratios but does not prescribe a crop-testing application or automated method. A manual review in your graphics editor is sufficient if it shows the same image through four exact-ratio windows.
- Duplicate the master view. Keep one untouched full-canvas view and four preview views or clipping rectangles.
- Set the first preview to 5:4. Use 1280×1024 or 2560×2048 as a concrete test frame. Check that the focal subject, Debian mark, and any necessary lettering remain visible.
- Repeat at 4:3. Use 1600×1200 or 2048×1536. Look for a subject that now appears too high, too low, or too close to an edge.
- Repeat at 16:10. Use 1920×1200 or 2560×1600. Confirm that the added height does not create a dead band or expose construction edges.
- Repeat at 16:9. Use 1920×1080. Confirm that the wide crop does not make the subject look undersized or leave the logo isolated.
- View each preview at reduced scale. Desktop wallpapers are often seen behind small icons and windows. A composition that works only when zoomed in is not finished.
- Check the crop anchor. If your desktop test offers fill, fit, center, or span modes, inspect the mode you expect users to select. Keep the design tolerant of a modest shift from the exact center.
- Return to the SVG. Move grouped elements, simplify edge detail, or reduce contrast, then repeat all four previews after every substantial change.
A crop review checklist
- The focal subject is completely recognizable in all four ratios.
- The Debian mark is not clipped, obscured, or visually detached from the composition.
- No essential word is cut in half or pushed beneath a likely panel.
- The visual center remains balanced when the sides are removed for 5:4 and 4:3.
- The extra height in 16:10 does not expose an unfinished background area.
- The 16:9 version does not turn the subject into a small object surrounded by empty space.
- Icon labels and common window borders remain readable over the background.
Design for GNOME, KDE, and Xfce desktops
Debian’s artwork coordination page names GNOME, KDE, and Xfce as environments the artwork should ideally support. Their panel layouts, icon treatments, and wallpaper controls are not identical, so design for the shared problem rather than one screenshot.
Keep an icon field quiet
Use a lower-contrast or less detailed region where users are likely to place icons. A gentle gradient or broad color transition is easier to read through than a pattern of small, high-contrast marks. This is a practical interpretation of Debian’s unobtrusive-artwork goal, not a published contrast formula.

Protect panel and launcher areas
Do not make the bottom, top, or side edge the only place where the design makes sense. Panels can be moved, hidden, or enlarged. Let the composition remain coherent if a strip is covered.
Check light and dark interface themes
If the background has both very bright and very dark regions, test it with light and dark interface elements. Reduce extreme contrast behind the likely icon field while keeping enough tonal variation for the artwork to retain depth.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using the Debian logo in a wallpaper
Debian publishes an open-use logo in versions with and without the word “Debian.” The stated licenses for that open-use mark are LGPL-3-or-later or CC BY-SA 3.0 Unported. Select the version that fits the composition and preserve the logo’s recognizable form.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Do not assume that the restricted-use mark has the same permissions as the open-use version. Confirm which artwork you downloaded and read the current Debian logo terms before distributing a wallpaper.

Practical logo placement
- Keep the mark inside the crop-safe area rather than attaching it to an edge.
- Give it clear space so background texture does not make it look altered.
- Do not stretch it independently along one axis.
- Keep a separate logo layer in the SVG so its position and scale can be corrected after crop tests.
- Record the logo variant and its license in the source package.
One flexible master or several rendered sizes?
| Workflow | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| One SVG master | One editable source, consistent visual identity, fewer files to maintain, and easy future changes. | Every ratio depends on the same composition; a weak crop cannot be repaired without changing all views. |
| Several rendered sizes or ratios | Each asset can be tuned for its target frame, and a desktop package can select an appropriate image. | More exports to review and more chances for versions to drift apart. |
| SVG master plus selected PNG renders | Preserves editability while providing predictable fallback files. | Requires a repeatable export process whenever the SVG changes. |
Debian permits a single version when cropping remains sound. Its desktop-base packaging also supports metadata for selecting among image sizes and ratios, so multiple renders are useful when you have a real quality reason for them, not simply because more files exist.
Export and package the finished artwork
- Freeze the composition only after the four-ratio review. Save a versioned SVG with the crop guides and editable groups intact.
- Export PNG fallbacks at the dimensions you actually need. Use the Debian example sizes for direct testing if they match your delivery plan; do not describe them as the only supported resolutions.
- Inspect the rendered files. Check transparency, color mode, missing fonts, clipped filters, and unexpected seams at the edges.
- Keep source and delivery files together. Include the SVG, any linked raster assets, font or license information, and a short note identifying the logo variant.
- State the artwork license. Debian contribution requirements ask contributors to identify the distribution license and provide a source format that can be modified with free software.
- Test the package after installation. Verify that the desktop can read the selected SVG or PNG and that its fill or crop mode produces the same safe composition you reviewed.
The contribution expectations above apply when you submit artwork to Debian. They are not a universal legal requirement for every personal wallpaper, but following them makes the work easier for others to reuse and maintain.
Troubleshoot common crop failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The subject disappears at 5:4. | The design was built for a wide frame and the sides contain essential information. | Move the subject inward, enlarge the shared central grouping, or make the side detail decorative. |
| The logo is visible but feels stranded. | The surrounding visual context was cropped away. | Group the logo with the focal composition and place both inside the common safe area. |
| 16:10 looks empty above or below. | The artwork was tuned only to 16:9. | Extend the background treatment and rebalance the subject vertically without adding essential content to the extra band. |
| Text is clipped or unreadable. | Lettering was treated as an edge ornament or placed beneath a panel. | Move it into the safe area, shorten it, or remove it when the image works without words. |
| Icons disappear into the background. | High-detail texture or extreme contrast sits behind the icon field. | Reduce local contrast, blur or simplify the texture, and test with both light and dark interface elements. |
| The SVG looks different from the PNG. | A renderer handled fonts, filters, linked assets, or color differently. | Use dependable vector features, package linked assets, inspect font handling, and treat the rendered PNG as the compatibility reference for that delivery path. |
| One desktop setting looks correct while another crops badly. | The wallpaper mode changes scaling or anchoring. | Review fill, fit, center, and span behavior where available, and keep the essential composition tolerant of a modest anchor shift. |
Contribution-ready checklist
- The master is an editable SVG or another source format that can be modified with free software.
- All four target ratios—5:4, 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9—have been previewed individually.
- The focal subject, Debian mark, and essential lettering survive every crop.
- The background remains pleasant and unobtrusive behind desktop icons and windows.
- The logo variant is identified, and its current open-use or restricted-use terms have been checked.
- The artwork license is stated for the intended Debian contribution.
- PNG exports, if included, are clearly treated as renders of the SVG master.
- Any current Debian packaging or contribution details have been checked against the live documentation, because package versions and release procedures can change.
The practical answer
Create the composition around a shared central safe area, not around one favorite monitor shape. Keep the SVG editable, use the Debian open-use logo only under its published terms, and inspect 5:4, 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9 crops before exporting. A single SVG is enough when every crop remains balanced; add tuned PNG or ratio-specific renders only when testing shows a real quality improvement.
