Custom shortcuts belong to the keyboard you are using, so start by identifying the active keyboard and then open that keyboard’s settings. Gboard stores entries in Personal dictionary, Samsung Keyboard uses Text shortcuts, and SwiftKey’s documented route uses its clipboard clips. Depending on the keyboard and software version, your expanded phrase may appear as a suggestion that you tap rather than replace the trigger automatically.
What an Android text shortcut does
A text shortcut lets you type a short trigger and select a longer word, sentence, address, or other frequently reused phrase. For example, you might create addr1 for a mailing address or tyvm for “Thank you very much.” The trigger is only a lookup key; the saved entry contains the phrase you actually want to insert.

Android itself does not provide a single, system-wide phrase-replacement database that every keyboard shares. The keyboard currently handling your typing decides where shortcuts are configured and how they are offered. A shortcut saved in Samsung Keyboard will not automatically appear when Gboard is active, and changing keyboards can therefore make an existing shortcut seem to disappear.

You may see this feature described as text shortcuts, text replacement, personal dictionary, or, in some keyboard apps, a saved clipboard clip. The name and menu path depend on the keyboard and on the version of the phone’s software.

Identify the keyboard that is active
Before creating an entry, check which keyboard appears when you tap a text field. The keyboard’s name is usually visible in its own settings or in the keyboard chooser shown while typing. You can also open the phone’s Settings app and search for terms such as keyboard, on-screen keyboard, or default keyboard; exact labels differ between manufacturers and Android releases.
- If the keyboard’s toolbar has a gear icon, tap it to open that keyboard’s settings directly.
- If there is no gear icon, use the Settings search box to find the keyboard’s name and open its settings page.
- Write down the active keyboard before following a guide. The same shortcut may need to be recreated if you switch to another keyboard.
Once you know the keyboard, use the matching instructions below. Do not assume that a menu named “Text shortcuts” exists in every Android installation.
Create a shortcut in Gboard
Gboard places custom entries in its personal dictionary. The route can be opened from Gboard while you are typing or from the phone’s keyboard settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Gboard settings by tapping the gear icon on the Gboard toolbar, or open the phone’s keyboard settings and select Gboard.
- Tap Dictionary.
- Tap Personal dictionary.
- Choose the language in which you want the entry to be available.
- Tap the + button to add an entry.
- Enter the complete word or phrase in the main entry field.
- Enter an optional shortcut in the shortcut field. Use a short trigger that you are unlikely to type as an ordinary word.
- Save the entry.
Test the entry in a text field. Type the shortcut and look at Gboard’s suggestion strip. If the expanded phrase appears, tap it to insert the full text. The phrase may be offered as a suggestion rather than inserted immediately when you finish typing the trigger.
Google’s help documentation covers adding words to Gboard’s dictionary and managing suggestions. Its dictionary guidance does not describe every phrase-shortcut screen, so menu wording can differ from the route above in a particular Gboard release. If you cannot find Personal dictionary, open Gboard’s settings from the keyboard itself and search the available settings for “dictionary.”

Create a shortcut in Samsung Keyboard
Samsung Keyboard has a dedicated Text shortcuts screen. Samsung’s current support instructions use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management.
- Tap Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Tap Text shortcuts.
- Tap +.
- Enter the trigger in Shortcut phrase.
- Enter the text you want to insert in Expanded phrase.
- Tap Add.
Open any app with a text field and type the shortcut. Samsung says the expanded phrase appears in the predictive-text bar. Tap that suggestion to insert the phrase. Typing the trigger alone does not necessarily replace it without a tap.
Samsung notes that these instructions apply to its latest operating system and that devices with different menus may use another path. If General management or Text shortcuts is missing, search Settings for “Samsung Keyboard” or “text shortcuts,” then confirm that Samsung Keyboard—not another keyboard—is selected as the active input method.
Create a shortcut in SwiftKey
A secondary how-to route describes SwiftKey shortcuts as saved clipboard clips:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Rich Input.
- Tap Clipboard.
- Tap Add a New Clip.
- Enter the text you want the clip to contain.
- Add an optional shortcut for the clip.
- Save the clip and test the trigger from SwiftKey’s suggestion or clipboard interface.
SwiftKey’s menu labels can change, and this route is documented by older secondary guidance rather than a current vendor procedure. Treat it as a starting point: open SwiftKey’s current settings and verify whether clips still offer a shortcut field. If the menus differ, use the app’s own search or help entry rather than assuming that the older path remains unchanged.

Keyboard shortcut settings compared
| Keyboard | Where the setting lives | How the phrase is inserted | Instruction confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gboard | Dictionary > Personal dictionary, after opening Gboard settings | Type the trigger and tap the expanded phrase in the suggestion strip when it appears | Route supported by a recent independent how-to and Google’s general dictionary documentation; exact labels can vary |
| Samsung Keyboard | Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts | Type the shortcut, then tap the expanded phrase in the predictive-text bar | Current Samsung support instructions; Samsung warns that menus differ on some software versions |
| SwiftKey | Settings > Rich Input > Clipboard > Add a New Clip in the documented secondary route | Use the saved clip and its shortcut through SwiftKey’s input interface | Lower confidence because the route comes from dated secondary guidance; verify in the current app |
Choose triggers that work reliably
The best trigger is short but distinctive. A common word can cause an unwanted suggestion whenever you type it, while a trigger that is too long defeats the purpose of the shortcut. Use a consistent pattern that your keyboard will accept.
- Use a prefix: A trigger such as
;addror;sigis less likely to occur in normal prose than an ordinary word. - Keep entries recognizable: Make the trigger hint at the phrase so you can remember it months later.
- Separate similar entries: Give a work address, home address, and shipping address distinct triggers.
- Keep punctuation deliberate: If your chosen keyboard treats punctuation specially, test the exact trigger in a real text field before relying on it.
- Test capitalization: Type the trigger in the case you expect to use. Suggestion behavior can depend on the keyboard’s prediction settings.
For example, you could save ;meet for “I’m in the meeting now and will reply afterward,” ;hours for a business-hours notice, and ;thanks for a short closing. These examples illustrate the pattern; use your own phrases in the actual entries.
Use a shortcut after saving it
- Open an app with a text field, such as a messaging, notes, or email app.
- Make sure the keyboard whose settings contain the entry is active.
- Type the trigger exactly as saved.
- Watch the suggestion strip or predictive-text bar.
- Tap the expanded phrase to insert it.
- Read the inserted text before sending or submitting it, especially when the phrase contains an address, date, or recipient-specific detail.
A shortcut is not a universal command that every app must expand automatically. The keyboard supplies the suggestion or clip, and the app supplies the text field. If the phrase does not appear, test it in another ordinary text field to determine whether the issue is the keyboard entry or the original app.
Troubleshoot a shortcut that does not appear
Confirm the active keyboard
The most common cause is a keyboard mismatch. If you created the entry in Gboard but Samsung Keyboard is active, the new trigger will not be available from Samsung’s dictionary. Switch back to the keyboard where you created the entry, or recreate the entry in the keyboard you intend to use.
Check the exact entry and language
In Gboard, verify that the phrase was saved under the language you are currently typing. A personal-dictionary entry associated with one language may not be offered while another language layout is active. Reopen Dictionary > Personal dictionary, select the relevant language, and confirm the trigger and phrase.

Look for a suggestion instead of automatic replacement
Both Gboard and Samsung Keyboard may show the expanded phrase in the suggestion area. Type the trigger, then tap the phrase. If you expect silent replacement, that expectation can make a working shortcut look broken.
Review suggestion settings
Gboard’s help documentation includes controls for managing suggestions. If suggestions have been disabled or changed, the shortcut may not be visibly offered even though the dictionary entry remains saved. Open Gboard settings and review the suggestion-related options, then test again.
Search Settings when menus have moved
Phone manufacturers and software updates can rename or relocate keyboard menus. Search Settings for the keyboard’s name, “text shortcuts,” “personal dictionary,” or “clipboard.” On Samsung devices, Samsung specifically warns that a different software version may require a different path.
Test in a simple text field
Try the trigger in a basic notes or messaging field. If it works there but not in one particular app, the app may handle suggestions or text insertion differently. If it fails everywhere, return to the keyboard’s shortcut screen and confirm that the entry was saved.
Edit, replace, or remove an entry
Use the same keyboard settings area where the shortcut was created. Open the saved entry, change the phrase or trigger, and save it if the keyboard provides an edit control. If an old phrase keeps appearing, remove the obsolete entry or replace it with the corrected text. After editing, test the trigger in a text field rather than relying on a previously displayed suggestion.
Best Value
When you change keyboards, check both systems separately. A personal-dictionary entry in Gboard and a text-shortcut entry in Samsung Keyboard are independent records, so maintaining identical shortcuts across two keyboards requires adding them in each keyboard’s own settings.
Privacy and accuracy considerations
Shortcuts are convenient for repetitive text, but the expanded phrase can contain more information than you intended to send. Avoid putting passwords, one-time codes, financial details, or other secrets into a shortcut. A trigger can be entered accidentally, and the resulting phrase may appear in the suggestion bar where someone looking at your screen can read it.
Review long entries before sending them. A saved address, support response, or signature can become outdated, and a shortcut will continue offering the old wording until you update it. Keep separate triggers for details that change frequently, such as dates or meeting locations, rather than embedding information that is likely to become wrong.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Which method should you use?
- Use Gboard’s Personal dictionary if Gboard is your active keyboard and you want entries organized by language.
- Use Samsung Keyboard’s Text shortcuts if you type with Samsung Keyboard and want Samsung’s documented predictive-bar workflow.
- Use SwiftKey clips only after confirming that the current SwiftKey app still exposes shortcut fields in its Clipboard settings.
The practical decision is not which Android system menu is best; it is which keyboard you actually use. Create the shortcut in that keyboard, test the suggestion behavior, and repeat the setup only if you regularly switch keyboards.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Identify the keyboard shown when you type.
- Open that keyboard’s settings rather than relying on a generic Android shortcut menu.
- Save the full phrase and a distinctive trigger.
- Associate the entry with the correct language when the keyboard offers language choices.
- Type the trigger in a test field and tap the expanded suggestion if one appears.
- If nothing appears, verify the active keyboard, suggestion settings, language, and software-version menu labels.
- Do not store passwords or other sensitive information in a shortcut.
