The safest approach is not to imitate OpenAI’s logo at all. Build a distinctive identity for your project, and describe any OpenAI integration in accurate text. OpenAI’s Design Guidelines identify its name, logos, ChatGPT and GPT brands, and other marks as OpenAI property. The guidelines prohibit incorporating those marks into your own branding, designing a similar logo, or suggesting affiliation, sponsorship, or endorsement that does not exist.
If you genuinely need to show that software works with an OpenAI service, use the official asset only as a factual reference, unchanged and in the limited context allowed by the current guidelines. An MIT, Apache, GPL, or other open-source license for your code does not grant separate permission to use OpenAI trademarks or artwork.

What “OpenAI-inspired” should mean in practice
For an open-source maintainer, “inspired” is a dangerous word when it describes a logo. It can mean a design influenced by a technology relationship, but it can also mean a near-copy that users interpret as an official product. The second interpretation creates avoidable trademark and consumer-confusion risk.
OpenAI’s published guidance says its name and logos are its property and directs third parties to use the logo only when it directly relates to OpenAI services. The same guidance says not to modify the logo, incorporate it into your own branding, make it more prominent than your own identity, misrepresent a relationship, imply endorsement, or design a similar logo. Those are practical constraints even when a project is free, noncommercial, and hosted in a public repository.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Accordingly, treat the word “inspired” as a prompt to explore the problem your project solves, not as permission to reproduce recognizable OpenAI visual elements. A safe project mark should be independently drawn, independently named, and distinctive enough that a reasonable user would not mistake it for an official OpenAI product or partner.
Why an open-source license does not cover the logo
Source-code licensing and brand permission answer different questions. A code license tells users whether they may copy, modify, distribute, or sell the copyrightable code. It does not automatically license a company’s trademark, logo, product name, or other brand asset included in the repository.
GitHub’s terms illustrate this separation by distinguishing the software license grant from rights in GitHub trademarks and logo designs. Open Source Initiative guidance makes a similar point for its own marks: open-source participation does not eliminate the need to avoid confusingly similar branding or implied sponsorship. Those materials concern their respective marks, but the principle applies to an OpenAI integration as well.
Put the distinction into your repository structure and documentation:
- State the code license in
LICENSEand in the README. - List third-party names, logos, fonts, screenshots, and other assets separately from the code license.
- Identify which artwork is original project material and which, if any, is an unchanged third-party asset used under published guidance or permission.
- Do not write “all contents are MIT licensed” if the sentence could be read as granting rights in OpenAI marks or other third-party material.
If your project accepts contributions, add a short contributor instruction that new artwork must be original or properly authorized and must not imitate a third-party brand. This prevents a well-meaning pull request from introducing a problematic icon after the initial launch.
Choose a visual route before drawing anything
Decide which of the following situations describes your project. The answer determines whether you need a project logo, a factual service reference, or no OpenAI mark at all.

| Design or use case | Visual distance from OpenAI marks | OpenAI relevance | Risk of users inferring official status | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original project identity based on your own name and purpose | High | May be unrelated or integrated | Low when the name and artwork are distinctive | Preferred route. Create and document an independent mark. |
| Unmodified official OpenAI asset beside factual integration text | Not a new project mark | Directly related to an OpenAI service | Manageable only when the context is accurate and non-endorsing | Use only as supplied and within the current Design Guidelines. |
| Recolored, redrawn, animated, or combined OpenAI logo | Low | Possibly related | High | Do not use. Obtain specific written permission if a proposed use is genuinely necessary. |
| New logo deliberately similar to OpenAI’s logo or wordmark | Low | May be unrelated | High | Reject the concept and restart with different shapes, typography, and composition. |
| Text-only statement that the software connects to an OpenAI service | High | Directly related when true | Lower than a prominent logo, but wording still matters | Usually the clearest way to explain compatibility without creating a co-branded identity. |
These categories are decision aids, not a legal test. Confusion depends on the complete presentation, the goods or services involved, where the project is distributed, and the law that applies in that jurisdiction.

Step-by-step: create an independent project identity
1. Define the project’s own promise
Write one sentence describing what the software does, who uses it, and what makes it different. A command-line tool, a testing harness, a data connector, and a hosted application may all call an OpenAI API while having completely different identities. Let that function, community, or domain supply the creative direction.
Choose a project name that does not place OpenAI, ChatGPT, GPT, or a confusingly similar term at the center of the brand. A factual statement such as “an OpenAI API client for [project name]” describes a relationship; naming the project as if it were an official OpenAI product does something different.
2. Build a visual “do not borrow” list
Before sketching, record the elements you will not copy: the OpenAI wordmark, its logo artwork, distinctive arrangements, and combinations that make your mark look like a variant, extension, or sub-brand. Do not trace a reference image, redraw it by eye, recolor it, rotate it, add effects, or merge it with your own symbol. Avoid a concept whose appeal depends on being recognized as an OpenAI lookalike.
3. Generate genuinely different concepts
Explore several unrelated approaches using your project’s subject matter. Change the underlying geometry, proportions, typography, layout, and color logic rather than making minor edits to one familiar shape. Keep dated sketches, source files, and design notes so you can show how the final mark was developed independently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIndependence is not proved by a file timestamp alone, but design records help you notice when a concept drifted toward imitation and help contributors understand the intended boundary.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
4. Test for mistaken affiliation
Show the mark without your explanatory paragraph to people who are not involved in the project. Ask three separate questions: What organization do you think this belongs to? Do you think OpenAI made or sponsors it? What does the project do? If several people infer an official connection from the artwork, name, or layout, treat that as a redesign signal even if you believe the mark is technically different.
Test the icon at the sizes and locations where it will appear: repository avatars, package indexes, browser tabs, documentation headers, social previews, and application launchers. A mark that looks independent in a large presentation can become confusing when reduced to a small symbol beside an OpenAI reference.
5. Check the complete context
Review the mark together with the project name, tagline, navigation, screenshots, and integration badges. Confusion can come from the combination rather than from one isolated element. A distinct icon may still appear official if the page uses OpenAI as the largest name, places the two marks in a lockup, or says “official” without evidence.
6. Record an approval decision
Keep a short internal record stating who reviewed the artwork, what third-party references were considered, why the design is independent, and where it will be used. Include the date and the relevant version of the OpenAI guidance. This record is not a substitute for legal advice, but it creates a repeatable review process when the logo is updated or reused in a new channel.
When an actual OpenAI logo may be appropriate
OpenAI’s guidance sets a narrow starting point: Use the logo only when it directly relates to OpenAI services.
A direct relationship could include documentation explaining that a feature sends requests to an OpenAI service, provided the surrounding claims are accurate. It does not mean that any developer who likes the visual style may place the logo on a project homepage.
Use the supplied asset, not a modified version
If the current guidelines allow the use you need, obtain the official asset from the official source and keep it exactly as supplied. Do not recolor it to match your palette, redraw it as an outline, crop it into a favicon, animate it, add a slogan, or combine it with your symbol into a new badge. Do not make it larger or more prominent than your own project identity.

Keep the relationship factual
Place a plain-language statement near the asset. For example: “This optional connector sends requests to an OpenAI service. The project is independent and is not endorsed or sponsored by OpenAI.” Use the second sentence only when it accurately describes your relationship; a disclaimer cannot cure a presentation that otherwise claims official status.

Use the OpenAI mark in a documentation section, integration matrix, or settings screen where the service relationship is relevant. Do not use it as the project avatar, primary favicon, package name, or merchandise design. Your own name and logo should remain the visual anchor.
Do not assume a developer-term license is universal
OpenAI App Developer Terms describe a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license for covered app developers to use OpenAI Assets solely to promote their Apps, subject to those terms and the Brand Guidelines. That is a bounded permission for qualifying apps, not a general logo license for every open-source repository. Confirm that your project and proposed use actually fit the current terms before relying on them.
How to describe an OpenAI integration without implying endorsement
Text is usually safer than a prominent logo because it can state exactly what your software does. Keep the claim narrow and technically verifiable.
- “Optional OpenAI API integration” describes an available connector without claiming ownership.
- “Compatible with OpenAI services” is appropriate only if the compatibility is real and maintained.
- “Uses an OpenAI model when the user supplies credentials” explains the user-controlled relationship.
- “OpenAI is a trademark of OpenAI; this independent project is not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI” can clarify status when a factual reference is necessary.
Avoid statements such as “official OpenAI tool,” “OpenAI-approved,” “OpenAI edition,” or “the OpenAI team’s project” unless you have specific, current evidence and written authorization for that claim. Do not place “OpenAI” in a domain, package name, social handle, or product title merely to capture attention if that wording could make the project look official.

A settings panel that labels a provider accurately is less likely to be mistaken for a first-party product than a splash screen dominated by a third-party logo. Keep provider names in ordinary text, use consistent capitalization, and avoid a co-branded lockup that gives equal or greater visual weight to OpenAI.

README and documentation
Explain the integration in a dedicated section rather than burying it in marketing copy. Identify whether the user supplies the API key, whether requests leave the user’s environment, and which feature uses the service. Add a trademark notice only when needed for clarity; do not turn the notice into a claim of partnership.
Best Value
Package registries and release files
Use your own icon and name in package metadata. If a registry requires an integration keyword, use a factual description instead of a name that suggests official ownership. Check generated archives, installer screens, and default application icons; branding problems often survive in build artifacts after the website has been corrected.
Screenshots and tutorials
Crop screenshots to show the relevant workflow, not a third-party logo as the hero image. If an official asset appears in a settings screen because the service is selected, keep it unchanged and include enough surrounding text to make the relationship clear. Do not place the image on stickers, shirts, mugs, or other physical products; OpenAI’s guidance warns against putting its logo on tangible merchandise and against modifying it.
Contributors and forks
Add a contribution rule covering names, icons, and illustrations. When accepting a pull request that changes branding, repeat the confusion test and inspect every use context. A fork may choose its own identity, but it should not present itself as an official OpenAI fork or preserve a confusingly similar mark simply because the original repository did so.
Common scenarios and the safest response
| Scenario | What the user may see | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| A library sends prompts to an OpenAI service when configured by the user | Maintainer wants an OpenAI-shaped project icon | Use an original library identity and explain the provider in text and configuration documentation. |
| A tutorial demonstrates provider selection | Author wants a large OpenAI logo in the article header | Use a neutral tutorial graphic; show an unchanged official asset only where the service is selected and directly relevant. |
| An unrelated developer tool uses a similar interlocking symbol because it looks modern | The OpenAI connection is only implied by the visual style | Redesign. An unrelated project has no factual basis for displaying the OpenAI mark. |
| A project wants an “official-looking” badge to attract contributors | Badge uses OpenAI’s name or a modified logo | Do not use it. Explain independence and community status in words instead. |
| A commercial hosted service resells access to a model | Provider mark appears in the service’s primary header | Review the current terms and obtain professional advice before launch; commercial distribution and prominent placement increase the need for a careful clearance review. |
| A maintainer receives a request to add OpenAI merchandise | Logo appears on shirts, stickers, or mugs | Decline unless a current permission specifically covers the proposed merchandise and artwork. |
A pre-launch review checklist
Run this checklist on the artwork, name, repository, website, and packaged application:
- Is the mark built from original shapes, typography, and composition rather than a trace, redraw, adaptation, or combination of OpenAI elements?
- Would a person seeing only the icon and project name think OpenAI owns, sponsors, or officially endorses the project?
- Is OpenAI genuinely relevant to the specific screen, document, or feature where any reference appears?
- Is every third-party logo used exactly as supplied, without recoloring, cropping, distortion, animation, or incorporation into your own mark?
- Does your identity remain more prominent than a provider reference?
- Does the README explain the relationship accurately without calling the project official, approved, or endorsed?
- Are code-license terms clearly separated from trademark and asset notices?
- Have you checked generated icons, package metadata, social cards, screenshots, documentation themes, and merchandise mockups?
- Have you recorded the date and version of the brand guidance you relied on?
- For a commercially important launch, have you asked a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction to review the actual design and use?
What to do if someone challenges the logo
Do not argue that the project is open source as if that ends the issue. Pause new promotional use, preserve the design files and publication history, and identify every place the mark appears. Remove or replace the most prominent uses first: repository avatars, home-page headers, package icons, and merchandise.
Ask the complainant to identify the specific asset or wording at issue, then compare the use with the current OpenAI Design Guidelines and any applicable terms. If the project truly needs an OpenAI asset, contact OpenAI through the addresses published in its guidance: [email protected] for permission questions and [email protected] for legal inquiries. A request is not permission until you receive a clear, written authorization that covers the proposed use.
If the dispute concerns a confusingly similar project mark, changing the design is usually more predictable than trying to justify a near-copy. Update the repository, releases, documentation, and cached social images, and tell users what changed so that old screenshots do not continue to suggest an affiliation.
Geography, timing, and legal limits
Trademark rules differ by country, and the facts of a particular design matter. The same icon can create different questions depending on the goods or services, audience, registration status, distribution channels, and whether the project is commercial. No general checklist can determine the legal outcome for an unpublished logo.
The guidance summarized here was published by OpenAI and accessed on October 13, 2026. Brand pages, developer terms, and permitted assets can change, so check the live official guidance immediately before release. If the project has investors, paid distribution, a large user base, or a disputed design, obtain advice from a qualified lawyer in the jurisdiction that matters to you. Do not treat this article, a repository license, or a community opinion as a clearance opinion.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for maintainers
Create a logo that expresses your project, not a logo that asks users to recognize OpenAI. Use factual text to explain a real integration. If an official asset is genuinely needed, keep it unchanged, subordinate to your own identity, and limited to the context allowed by the current OpenAI guidance. Keep trademark permissions separate from your code license, document the decision, and redesign any concept that could make users think the project is official or sponsored.
