Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe safe method is straightforward: generate the recovery phrase only through your wallet’s official setup or backup flow, copy every word in the displayed order, verify it using the wallet’s own check, and store the record offline where it is protected from both damage and discovery. Treat the phrase as the control credential for the wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to recover the wallet and move its assets; if you lose it, a self-custody provider may have no way to restore access.
What a recovery phrase is—and why the backup matters
A crypto wallet recovery phrase is the human-readable backup for the wallet’s private-key system. Wallets may call it a seed phrase, Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP), wallet backup, recovery seed or mnemonic. The words are not a password reset code and are not something a support agent should need to see. They can recreate the wallet in compatible software or hardware, which is why possession can mean control of the assets.

In a self-custody wallet, the provider generally does not hold a copy that can be sent to you later. Your login password may protect an app on one device, but the recovery phrase is what can restore the wallet elsewhere. MetaMask describes the SRP as the foundation of its wallet and explains that the importance of the password depends on the setup: MetaMask’s security guidance.
Do not assume every wallet uses the same length or standard. MetaMask’s standard phrase-based setup uses a unique 12-word phrase. Trezor documents 12- or 24-word BIP39 backups and, on supported setups, 20-word SLIP39 backups. The wallet’s own instructions determine which format is valid; never shorten, extend, translate or combine words from different wallets.

Create the backup through the official wallet flow
1. Start from a trusted device and official software
Open the wallet manufacturer’s genuine app or connect the genuine hardware device. Navigate to its setup, backup or recovery-phrase display using instructions from the manufacturer’s official site. Do not follow a search advertisement, unsolicited support message, pop-up, QR code or “phrase generator” found online. A phrase generated by an untrusted website may already be known to its operator.
Check the app and device screens together when a hardware wallet is involved. A recovery phrase should be generated and shown by the wallet, not supplied by a person in chat. If you are restoring an existing wallet rather than creating one, use the wallet’s documented restore procedure and confirm that the phrase format is supported before entering anything.
2. Prepare a private recording area
Work where cameras, visitors and smart-home devices cannot see or hear the words. Put phones, webcams and screen-recording software away from the display. Do not dictate the phrase, photograph it, copy it to a clipboard that synchronizes across devices or allow another person to transcribe it unless that person is part of a deliberate, trusted estate plan.

3. Write every word in the displayed order
- Use the wallet’s supplied recovery cards or another durable, clearly numbered record.
- Write each word exactly as displayed, including spelling, and keep the position number beside it.
- Do not add punctuation, substitute a synonym, translate a word or rely on memory.
- Check the complete sequence against the wallet screen before leaving the setup process.
A single transposed or misspelled word can produce a different wallet. The phrase is not a collection of interchangeable words, so an apparently small copying error may make recovery fail or open an empty, different wallet.
4. Complete the wallet’s verification step
Many wallets ask you to select or type words from the phrase to confirm that the backup exists. Complete that check exactly as directed. It tests your physical record without sending the phrase to a third-party service. Never “verify” the phrase by typing it into a website, form, browser extension, online validator, support ticket or another device you do not trust.

Choose storage for the threats you actually face
Storage is a trade-off between durability, secrecy, redundancy and the owner’s ability to recover the wallet later. A material that survives a flood may still be easy for a visitor to find; a hidden paper copy may be private but vulnerable to fire. Wallet guidance from Ledger and Trezor emphasizes offline storage and protection from damage or loss. See Ledger’s recovery-phrase guidance, Ledger’s seed-phrase storage overview and Trezor’s explanation of backup formats.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Backup approach | Damage and wear | Who might discover it | Risk of losing every copy | Compatibility | Trust and custody | Recovery confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper | Easy to make, but vulnerable to fire, water, tearing, fading and illegible handwriting. | Anyone who finds the paper and can read it; a visible hiding place is a confidentiality failure. | One paper copy is a single point of loss. | Usually records the words directly, but the phrase length and standard must still match the wallet. | No outside custodian, provided it is created and stored privately. | High when writing is clear and the owner can locate the record; low if ink or paper degrades. |
| Metal backup | Wallet providers describe metal as more resistant to fire, water, corrosion and ordinary environmental damage than paper; resistance depends on the material and construction. | It is not theft-proof. A person who finds the plate or reads its encoding can use the phrase. | A single plate can still be lost, stolen or destroyed. | Must support the wallet’s word-encoding method and phrase length; confirm that every word can be recovered unambiguously. | No provider custody, but the owner must understand and preserve the encoding. | Strong against many physical hazards when the words are accurately encoded and later decoded. |
| Second compatible hardware wallet | The device protects the secret electronically, but it can be lost, damaged, locked or malfunctioning. | Someone with the device may still need its PIN, yet a phrase entered into an untrusted device could be exposed. | Two devices reduce dependence on one device, but they do not replace a documented offline backup. | Strictly wallet- and format-dependent. Check support for the exact BIP39, SLIP39 or other standard before restoring. | Requires trust in the device manufacturer and secure handling during restoration; it is not automatically a separate custody model. | Useful when both devices are maintained and the owner knows the restore procedure; it adds operational complexity. |
| Optional provider recovery service | May avoid reliance on one physical item, but availability and protections vary by ecosystem. | The provider or designated custodians may be able to access or reconstruct recovery information under the service’s rules. | Service closure, account loss, identity checks or policy changes can affect access. | Only works for the wallet, region and account type that explicitly support it. | Introduces provider or custodian trust and may change the self-custody assumptions. | Can help if its procedure is understood and available, but it is not a universal substitute for a secure offline backup. |
No storage location wins against every threat. Metal addresses some environmental risks, not the risk that somebody finds and reads the words. A second copy reduces the chance that one accident destroys the only record, but every additional copy creates another place where the phrase can be exposed.
Design a storage plan instead of choosing a hiding place at random
Balance damage, discovery and loss
List the events you need to withstand: fire, water, corrosion, accidental disposal, burglary, visitors, household members, travel and your own inability to remember where the record is. Then choose a location and material that address the most serious combination. The phrase should be offline, physically protected and accessible to the people who must be able to recover the wallet—not to everyone who can enter the room.
A sealed container, safe or other controlled location can help with environmental exposure and casual discovery, but its security depends on who has the key or combination. Do not announce the location in a publicly visible inventory. If another person must be able to recover the wallet after incapacity, document that access arrangement separately and consider the legal and trust implications.

The various screws present in the tablet help protect it against deformation. It is also designed to have a fireproof threshold of house fires.
Decide whether you need a second copy
One carefully protected copy is simple and limits exposure. Two geographically separated copies can reduce the chance that a single fire, flood or move destroys the backup, but they double the opportunities for theft or accidental disclosure. If you make another copy, reproduce it directly from the verified original in a private setting, inspect both for exactness and secure each independently.
Do not split a standard phrase into arbitrary fragments and assume that partial pieces are safe. Unless the wallet explicitly supports a multi-share standard such as a documented SLIP39 arrangement, an incomplete phrase will not restore the wallet and may create confusion about what must be protected.
Keep context separate from the secret
Record non-secret information that will help future recovery: the wallet type, the phrase standard or length, supported accounts or networks, and the location of the wallet’s official recovery instructions. Keep that note separate from the words. Do not label an envelope or file with the phrase itself, a photograph of it or enough detail to reveal it to someone who finds the context note.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand compatibility before you need recovery
A phrase restores a wallet only when the destination supports the same recovery format and derivation choices. The number of words alone does not prove compatibility. Trezor’s documentation distinguishes 12- and 24-word BIP39 backups from 20-word SLIP39 backups; its wallet-backup recovery guide explains how its supported process works.
Hardware-wallet integration can also be conditional. MetaMask explains its supported hardware-wallet connections in its hardware wallet guide. Before buying a second device or attempting a restore, verify the exact wallet model, software version, backup standard, account type and network support. A successful import that shows no expected accounts may indicate a derivation or account-selection mismatch rather than a missing asset—but stop and consult the official documentation before trying random services.

How to recover safely when the original wallet is unavailable
- Obtain a genuine, compatible wallet app or hardware device from the manufacturer’s official distribution channel.
- Use its documented “restore,” “recover” or “import wallet” path, and confirm the expected phrase length and standard.
- Enter the words only on the trusted wallet device or official app, away from cameras, screen-sharing tools and people who do not need access.
- Check that the expected accounts and balances appear. If they do not, stop rather than repeatedly entering the phrase into unrelated software.
- After recovery, secure the phrase again and remove temporary digital traces such as copied text, screenshots or browser history where applicable.
Trezor’s instruction to keep a wallet backup “offline, private, and protected from damage or loss” captures the operating rule: Trezor backup formats. A recovery exercise should use the same trusted environment you would use during an emergency, not a random online checker.
What to do if the phrase may have been exposed
Assume the phrase is compromised if it was photographed, uploaded, emailed, pasted into a form, typed into an untrusted website or app, shown to an unknown person, or stored in a cloud-synchronized location. Do not keep using it as though deleting the file erased every copy.
- From a trusted wallet setup, create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase.
- Verify and securely record the new phrase before moving funds.
- Transfer assets from the potentially exposed wallet to the new wallet, accounting for network fees and any assets or contracts that require separate action.
- After confirming receipt, stop using the old wallet for funds that need protection. Do not reuse its phrase as a backup for the new wallet.
If the phrase is missing but has not been exposed, search only your planned secure locations and check whether a compatible wallet device or officially supported recovery option exists. A self-custody provider generally cannot reconstruct a lost phrase for you. Do not give the words to “recovery agents,” support impersonators or anyone promising to unlock the wallet.
Security rules that prevent the most common failures
- Never share the phrase with customer support, moderators, friends, a buyer, an exchange or a person claiming to be from the wallet company. MetaMask’s official FAQs and basic security tips explain that legitimate support does not need your SRP.
- Never type it into a browser, website, online form, cloud document, password manager, chat, email or “wallet validation” tool.
- Never use a phrase supplied by another person or generated by an online tool.
- Do not confuse a wallet password, device PIN or encryption password with the recovery phrase; they serve different purposes.
- Inspect every copy periodically for fading, corrosion, missing characters or an unreadable encoding, but do so privately and without photographing it.
- Keep instructions and access arrangements current when you change wallet software, add accounts or plan for incapacity.
A practical final checklist
- The phrase came from the wallet’s official setup or backup process.
- Every word is present, correctly spelled and in the original order.
- The wallet’s own verification step was completed.
- No digital copy, photograph, cloud file or clipboard history contains the phrase.
- The physical record is protected against the most likely fire, water, wear, theft and discovery risks.
- Any second copy has a clear purpose and is secured separately.
- The wallet type, phrase format and recovery instructions are documented without exposing the words.
- Any second device or recovery service has been checked for exact compatibility, custody and access assumptions.
- You know the response plan if the phrase is exposed: create a new wallet and move assets through a trusted process.
