To make a custom level for a classic first-person shooter, choose the exact game and engine first, then use an editor and the game data format that match that target. For the best-documented beginner workflow—the Doom family—you need a compatible game-data file such as DOOM2.WAD or FREEDOOM2.WAD, a source port for testing, and a level editor. Build a small map, run the editor’s checks, test it in the engine your players will use, package only files you have permission to redistribute, and publish it through a community uploader or project forum.

The important limitation is that “classic FPS” is not one technical standard. Doom, Quake, Build-engine games and other shooters use different editors, map formats, runtimes and distribution customs. The detailed steps below use Doom as the practical example, while identifying the decisions you must re-check for another game.

Start with the target game, engine and compatibility level

A level is not finished when it opens in an editor. It is finished when it loads and behaves correctly in the specific game or source port you intend to support. Decide that target before drawing rooms or choosing advanced effects.

Choose the game and runtime

Write down the exact game, edition and engine that should run the map. In the Doom family, that might mean an original-game-compatible runtime, a modern source port, or a project built around Freedoom data. The runtime determines which map features, limits and behaviors are available. A level that depends on newer engine features may fail in a vanilla-compatible environment.

Choose the Doom map format

RAMP’s mapping guidance separates original-game features from later features provided through Universal Doom Map Format (UDMF). Treat these as different compatibility targets rather than interchangeable editor settings.

Target What it means When to choose it
Original-game-compatible features Stay within behavior and limits expected by the original game or a close compatibility port. Use when broad support, vanilla behavior or conservative compatibility is the priority.
UDMF or other later features Use capabilities exposed by a newer format and the engines that understand it. Use when your chosen source port is part of the requirement and you accept narrower compatibility.

Do not select UDMF merely because an editor offers it. First decide which engine will run the map, then select the format that engine supports. Record the decision in the project notes so testers and players know what they need.

Apply the same decision process to non-Doom games

For Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood or another classic shooter, verify the editor, level-file format, engine version, compatibility target and packaging rules separately. The Doom workflow below is a model for making those decisions, not a claim that every classic FPS uses WAD files or the same tools.

Assemble the three parts of a Doom mapping setup

A Doom project has three separate pieces: an editor, game data and a runtime engine. Confusing them is the source of many first-project failures.

1. Level editor

RAMP names Ultimate Doom Builder and SLADE3 as examples of Doom editors. Eureka is another free option for classic Doom and related games, including Heretic, Hexen and Strife. Its project documentation lists Windows, Linux and macOS support, a 3D preview, multiple undo and redo levels, a built-in node builder and an IWAD requirement.

Eureka’s platform list makes it useful when your operating system is not Windows, but it does not establish that it is the best editor for every beginner or every target. Check that the editor supports the game, map format and source port you selected before committing to a project.

2. Game data (IWAD)

An editor and a source port do not supply the game’s maps, textures, sounds or other base data. For Doom-family work, RAMP identifies DOOM2.WAD and FREEDOOM2.WAD as setup options. Eureka states that an IWAD from a supported game is required.

Freedoom can provide Doom-compatible game data without requiring non-free software. Its documentation emphasizes that Freedoom is game data, not an engine; you still need a compatible engine or source port to play it.

3. Source port or engine

Use the runtime that matches your intended audience. A modern source port may expose features unavailable in the original game. If vanilla behavior is the goal, Freedoom specifically recommends Chocolate Doom because it adheres closely to vanilla limits and behavior. Test with that kind of conservative runtime rather than assuming a map that works in a feature-rich port will work everywhere.

Build a first map without over-scoping it

Begin with one small, complete level. Doom2.net’s introductory guidance recommends learning the editor with a modest project instead of planning a megawad immediately. A compact map lets you practice geometry, player starts, items, testing and packaging before a large layout creates dozens of interacting problems.

Plan the playable loop

Before opening the editor, define a short route: where the player starts, what space they can enter first, which obstacle blocks progress, and where the level ends. Keep the first version small enough to test repeatedly. A simple plan also makes it easier to notice a missing key, unreachable area or dead end.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Draw rooms and connections

Use the editor to create the rooms, corridors and transitions in that plan. Add the player start, enemies, weapons, ammunition, health and other items deliberately rather than filling every available space. The introductory Doom workflow describes building rooms, placing starts and items, and saving the result as a WAD.

For a beginner map, prioritize readable navigation and a reliable route over visual complexity. Add one feature at a time, save often and keep an earlier working copy before making a major change.

Save a clearly identified custom file

Save the finished map as a custom WAD or the equivalent project file for the target game. Use a distinct filename and include a short text note containing the map name, target game, format, required engine and known limitations. That information prevents players from guessing which runtime to launch.

Validate the level in the editor and in the engine

Validation has two parts: structural checks in the editor and actual play in the intended runtime. Passing one does not guarantee the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the editor’s error checks

Use the editor’s built-in checks before sharing. Look for malformed geometry, missing or invalid connections, unreachable starts, unclosed areas and other errors reported by the tool. The exact check names differ by editor, so follow the labels in the version you installed.

Test the compatibility target

Launch the map in the same engine and format you announced to players. If you claim vanilla compatibility, test with Chocolate Doom or another runtime that follows the intended vanilla limits. A test in only a modern source port can hide behavior that fails on a conservative engine.

Test from a new game

Start a fresh session rather than loading a save created before the latest map change. Confirm that the player can spawn, move through the intended route, collect required items, trigger progression and reach the exit. Check both the ordinary route and obvious unintended shortcuts.

Check difficulty and multiplayer starts where relevant

Freedoom’s contribution guidance calls for skill settings and multiplayer starts where appropriate. If your map advertises multiple difficulty levels, test each one and verify that its item and enemy changes are intentional. If multiplayer is supported, place and test the required starts instead of assuming a single-player layout will work for a group.

Keep a test matrix

Check Question to answer
Editor validation Does the map pass the editor’s structural and node-building checks?
Target engine Does it load in the exact source port and version you support?
Compatibility runtime If vanilla behavior is promised, does it work in a conservative runtime such as Chocolate Doom?
Gameplay route Can a new player spawn, progress, collect required items and exit?
Difficulty Do every advertised skill setting and its changes behave as intended?
Multiplayer Where applicable, are multiplayer starts present and usable?

Package only material you are allowed to share

Separate your custom level from proprietary game resources. A historical Doom FAQ describes the longstanding distinction: users may make maps, but a custom PWAD should not include original DOOM.WAD resources. That older documentation is evidence of the principle, not a substitute for checking the current terms for the game and edition you are targeting.

What to include

  • Your custom map file or project package.
  • A readme stating the title, target game, map format, required engine or source port, installation or loading instructions, author credit and known compatibility limits.
  • Original assets you created yourself or assets whose license explicitly permits redistribution and modification.

What not to assume

  • Do not bundle an original commercial IWAD simply because the map needs it to run.
  • Do not treat an asset labeled “free” as automatically safe for commercial use; Freedoom’s contribution guidance warns that some such labels still limit use to non-commercial contexts.
  • Do not copy textures, sounds, sprites or other resources from another game without permission.

Freedoom’s own project rules require permission for submitted resources, ask contributors to keep content original and distinct, and caution against restricted game assets. Those rules govern Freedoom contributions specifically, but the permission-checking habit applies to any project.

Choose a distribution route that matches the project

There is no single universal download channel. Use a route that fits the game, audience and review process.

RAMP uploader for Doom WAD submissions

RAMP’s 2026 mapping guide identifies its uploader for WAD submissions. Its documented setup uses a Doom data file, a source port and an editor, and its submission path is intended for Doom-related work. Follow the uploader’s current fields and provide the readme and compatibility information players need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Doomworld forums and project issue trackers

Freedoom’s README directs contributors toward Doomworld forums or its issue tracker for project submissions and feedback. These venues are useful when you want discussion, review or integration into an active project rather than a silent file drop.

Independent hosting

Freedoom states that it cannot provide general web or FTP hosting. If a project does not host released files itself, you may need an independent file host that permits the content and provides a stable download. Keep a copy of the exact release archive and record its version so you can replace a broken upload without changing the tested contents.

Official in-game mod browser for DOOM + DOOM II

Bethesda’s official DOOM + DOOM II page says players can publish single-player mods on PC and download and play community mods on all platforms through the in-game browser. It notes that a Bethesda.net account is required. Nintendo Switch supports only featured mods curated by id, so a mod published for the general browser should not be assumed to be available there.

This official browser is a different route from uploading a standalone WAD to a community site. Confirm that your map meets the product’s current submission requirements and that the supported platforms match the audience you are promising.

Write a release package players can actually use

A reliable release answers the questions a first-time player will ask before launching it.

Include these readme sections

  • Title and version: identify the map and release number.
  • Target: state the game, IWAD or compatible data set, map format and required source port.
  • Install or load steps: explain where the custom file goes or how the target launcher loads it.
  • Compatibility: distinguish original-game-compatible behavior from UDMF or other newer features.
  • Gameplay scope: state whether the release is single-player, supports particular skill settings or includes multiplayer starts.
  • Credits and licenses: name contributors and identify the permission or license for redistributable assets.
  • Known issues: disclose untested engines, incomplete modes or limits.

Do not make players infer the required runtime from the filename. A one-page readme prevents support questions and reduces the chance that someone tests a UDMF map in a runtime that cannot load it.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

The editor will not open the project

Check that the editor supports the selected game and that the required IWAD is installed and selected. Eureka explicitly requires an IWAD; an editor cannot create a playable Doom setup from the custom map alone.

The map loads in one port but not another

Compare the map format and features with the failing engine. Newer features or UDMF data require an engine that supports them. Either distribute the required source port clearly or rebuild the map using features available in the narrower compatibility target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The map runs but progression is impossible

Return to the test matrix. Start a new game, follow the intended route, verify every key or trigger, and test after each change. A structural check may pass even when a player cannot reach a required item or exit.

A multiplayer session has no valid start

Inspect the multiplayer starts and test them in the mode you claim to support. If multiplayer was not designed or tested, say so in the readme instead of implying support.

Players report missing textures or other assets

Confirm that every custom asset is included, licensed and referenced correctly. Do not solve an asset problem by copying resources from the original commercial game into the release. Recheck the package on a clean installation that contains only the permitted files and the player’s own game data.

A download disappears or becomes inaccessible

Keep an archived release and a copy of its readme. If the host does not provide permanent storage, publish through a project forum, issue tracker or another permitted host and note the exact version. For Freedoom contributions, remember that the project says it does not provide general web or FTP hosting, so a separate hosting plan may be necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How the Doom workflow translates to other classic FPS games

The transferable method is a sequence of decisions, not a set of Doom file names.

  1. Identify the target runtime. Record the game edition, engine or source port and compatibility promise.
  2. Find the matching editor. Confirm operating-system support and the map format used by that runtime.
  3. Obtain lawful game data. Determine whether the editor and engine require a separately installed data file.
  4. Build a small level. Learn the tool with one complete map before attempting a campaign or megawad-sized project.
  5. Validate twice. Run editor checks, then play in the exact runtime and compatibility target you advertise.
  6. Audit the package. Remove proprietary resources and verify every included asset’s permission.
  7. Publish where that community works. Use the game’s active uploader, forum, issue tracker or permitted file host.

What changes from game to game is the implementation: editor, file format, engine capabilities, asset rules and sharing venue. Verify each one instead of copying Doom assumptions into a Quake, Build-engine or other classic FPS project.

A practical release checklist

  • Target game and engine are named.
  • Map format and compatibility level are documented.
  • Required game-data file and source port are identified.
  • Editor checks pass without unresolved errors.
  • Fresh-game testing works in the intended runtime.
  • Advertised skill settings are tested.
  • Multiplayer starts are present and tested where applicable.
  • Only original or permission-cleared assets are included.
  • Readme contains loading instructions, credits, licenses and known issues.
  • Distribution venue matches the project’s rules and audience.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
