SimpleLogin aliases let you give a different email address to each website while keeping your real mailbox private. Create a random alias for an opaque address or a custom alias you can recognize, route it to one or more verified mailboxes, and then disable the alias or block individual senders when mail becomes unwanted. Delete only as a last resort: recovery and message history differ for standard SimpleLogin-domain aliases versus custom-domain and SimpleLogin-subdomain aliases.
This guide covers the complete lifecycle, from creating your first alias to changing its mailbox, replying without exposing your real address, using a personal domain, and choosing between the Free and Premium plans.

Understand what an alias does
An alias is the address people see
A SimpleLogin alias is a forwarding address. A service sends mail to the alias, SimpleLogin forwards that message to your destination mailbox, and the sender does not need to know the mailbox address behind it. The mailbox is the actual destination that receives forwarded messages; it is not the alias itself.
Use a separate alias for a retailer, newsletter, app, job application, or any other purpose where you may later want to identify or stop a sender. If one address starts receiving spam, you can act on that alias without changing the address used for everything else.

Replies can keep your mailbox address private
When you reply to a forwarded message through SimpleLogin, the service can use a reverse alias so the recipient sees an address that routes back through SimpleLogin rather than your real mailbox. The recipient can reply to that reverse alias, while your mailbox address remains hidden. See the official explanation of this flow in SimpleLogin’s reverse-alias documentation.
Create your first alias
SimpleLogin’s documentation calls this workflow Create your first alias. The dashboard presents two choices: a random alias and a custom alias.
Create a random alias
- Open the SimpleLogin dashboard.
- Choose Random Alias.
- Select the format offered by the dashboard: a random-word address or a UUID-style address.
- Copy the generated address into the website’s email field and finish that site’s signup.
Random aliases are quick and opaque. They do not reveal a descriptive label such as the name of the store or service, which makes them useful when you want the address itself to disclose as little as possible. The trade-off is that the address is harder to recognize from memory.

Create a custom alias
- Open the dashboard and select New Custom Alias.
- Choose the local part (the text before the @ sign) that identifies the service or purpose.
- Optionally enter a note, such as the website name, signup date, or reason you created the alias.
- Save the alias, then use the resulting address at the service that requested your email.
A custom local part is easier to identify in the dashboard and in forwarded mail. It reveals more descriptive information than a random address, so avoid putting sensitive details in the local part or note. Neither the local part nor the note changes where mail is delivered.
Choose the right format
| Choice | Best for | Privacy and recognition trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Random-word alias | Fast signups and addresses you do not want to label | Opaque to the recipient; easier to read than a UUID but not memorable |
| UUID-style random alias | Maximum opacity when the exact text is not important to you | Highly difficult to associate with a purpose; least memorable |
| Custom alias | Projects, clients, newsletters, or services you want to recognize immediately | Memorable and optionally annotated, but the label can reveal its purpose |
Send aliases to the correct mailbox
Use the mailbox from your account by default
The email address you used when signing up for SimpleLogin becomes the default mailbox. New aliases initially forward there, so you can create an alias and start using it without configuring another destination.

Add and verify another mailbox
- Open the mailbox page in the SimpleLogin dashboard.
- Add the additional email address you want to receive forwarded messages.
- Wait for the verification email at that address and complete its verification link.
- Return to the dashboard and select the verified mailbox when assigning an alias.
The documented mailbox procedure is described in SimpleLogin’s “Add a new mailbox” documentation. An unverified address cannot be used as a confirmed forwarding destination.
Assign one alias to several mailboxes
An alias can be assigned to multiple verified mailboxes. This is useful when you need the same incoming message in, for example, a personal mailbox and a work mailbox. Add each destination on the mailbox page, verify it, and select all required destinations in the alias’s mailbox assignment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Change the mailbox for an existing alias
- Open the alias in the dashboard.
- Open its mailbox assignment control.
- Select a different verified mailbox, or add another verified destination if the message should go to more than one.
- Save the change and send a test message to confirm that forwarding now reaches the intended inbox or inboxes.
Changing the mailbox changes the forwarding destination; it does not change the address that websites already have. Keep the alias in place when continuity matters, and move it rather than creating a replacement.
Control unwanted mail without destroying the alias
SimpleLogin has two controls with different scopes. Disabling an alias stops forwarding for everyone who uses that address. Blocking a sender stops mail from one sender while leaving other senders on the alias unaffected.
Disable an alias for everyone
- Open the alias in the dashboard.
- Turn off its enabled or forwarding toggle.
- Leave the alias in place if you may need to resume it later.
Use disabling when a website is sending too much mail, when you want a temporary pause, or when you are not yet certain whether the address will be needed again. Re-enable the same toggle to resume forwarding.

Block one sender
- Open the message or sender controls associated with the alias.
- Choose the option to block that sender.
- Confirm the block and leave the alias enabled for other senders.
Blocking is the narrower action: it targets one contact rather than every message addressed to the alias. The official procedure is documented in SimpleLogin’s “Block sender” guide.

Delete an alias only when you are finished with it
SimpleLogin’s official documentation says: “We recommend against deleting an alias and suggest either disable the alias or block some of its senders.” Follow that advice when a temporary pause or a sender-specific block solves the problem.
Delete from the alias menu
- Open the alias in the dashboard.
- Open its More menu.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
- Check the trash settings immediately instead of assuming that deletion is permanent or automatically recoverable.
The full deletion guidance is in SimpleLogin’s “Delete an alias” documentation. Deletion can break mail sent to an address that a service still has on file, so update important accounts before removing their alias.
Restore a standard SimpleLogin-domain alias
For an ordinary alias on a SimpleLogin-owned domain, use the global alias trash and restore the address when the trash still makes it available. The exact restore controls and retention behavior are described in SimpleLogin’s “Restore an alias” guide. If the alias is not present in the global trash, it is not available through that restoration path.
Recover a custom-domain or SimpleLogin-subdomain alias
Custom-domain and SimpleLogin-subdomain aliases follow a different path. Remove the deleted address from that domain’s trash, then recreate the alias on the domain. This is not a full restoration: associated historical contacts and settings are deleted, so the recreated alias may not behave like the original record.

Use a personal domain (optional)
You do not need a personal domain to create ordinary aliases. If you want aliases under a domain you control, add the domain from SimpleLogin’s domain page and follow the DNS-record instructions shown there. DNS setup is a prerequisite: the domain must be configured with the records SimpleLogin provides before it can route aliases.
- Open SimpleLogin’s custom-domain instructions.
- Add your domain in the domain section of the dashboard.
- Copy the DNS records displayed for your domain into your DNS provider’s control panel.
- Wait for DNS changes to propagate, then return to SimpleLogin and complete the domain verification.
- Create aliases using that domain after verification.
The current pricing page lists custom domains under Premium. A personal domain is therefore an advanced option for readers who need branded or catch-all addressing, not a requirement for getting started with random or custom aliases on SimpleLogin’s domains.
Free versus Premium: current limits and features

Secure the account that controls every alias
Protect the SimpleLogin account itself because anyone who gains access can inspect aliases, change mailbox destinations, disable forwarding, or delete addresses. The pricing page lists TOTP and WebAuthn (FIDO) account security. A FIDO2 security key is optional account protection, not a requirement for creating or managing aliases.
Best Value
- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
- Enable a second factor in the account-security settings.
- Keep recovery information available before changing phones or security keys.
- Review mailbox destinations periodically and remove any address you no longer control.
- Use a unique account password and do not reuse it at a service that receives one of your aliases.
Practical workflows and troubleshooting
A new signup never delivers a verification message
- Confirm that the alias is enabled in the dashboard.
- Check which mailbox is assigned and whether that mailbox was verified.
- Look in the destination mailbox’s spam or quarantine folder.
- If the message still does not arrive, use the service’s resend option and verify that you typed the alias correctly.
You want to move an alias without changing the address
Do not delete and recreate it. Add and verify the new mailbox, change the alias’s assignment, and test delivery. Existing accounts can continue using the same alias while its destination changes.
Only one newsletter or contact is unwanted
Block that sender rather than disabling the alias. Disabling would stop every sender that uses the address.
Everything sent to the alias is unwanted
Disable the alias first. If you later decide the address is permanently compromised or no longer needed, review the consequences and trash behavior before deleting it.
You deleted the wrong alias
For a standard SimpleLogin-domain alias, check the global alias trash and follow the restore procedure. For a custom-domain or SimpleLogin-subdomain alias, check that domain’s trash and recreate the address after removing it there. Expect historical contacts and settings to be absent from the recreated alias.
You need more aliases or destinations
Count your current aliases and mailboxes against the limits shown on the pricing page. The checked listing gives Free users 10 aliases and one mailbox; Premium lists unlimited aliases, mailboxes, and custom domains. Recheck those limits before upgrading because plan details can change.
A low-maintenance alias strategy
- Create one alias per service or clearly defined purpose instead of reusing a single address everywhere.
- Use random-word or UUID formats when you do not want the address to advertise its purpose.
- Use a custom local part and a note when recognition and administration matter more than opacity.
- Route aliases to a verified mailbox, and add a second destination only when there is a clear reason to duplicate mail.
- Block individual senders for isolated abuse; disable an alias for a broad pause.
- Before deleting, update the account that uses the alias or accept that mail sent to the old address may be lost.
- Use the documented trash path that matches the alias’s domain, and remember that recreating a custom-domain or subdomain alias does not restore its old contacts or settings.
This approach preserves useful addresses, limits the impact of spam, and avoids treating deletion as a reversible “off switch.”
