Docker Desktop is the simplest starting point for managing local Docker containers with a graphical interface. Install the application for macOS, Linux, or Windows, open its Containers view, and use the container or Compose application row to start, stop, pause, resume, restart, delete, inspect, open a terminal, read logs, check resource use, or open an exposed application port in your browser. Docker documents the product scope in its Docker Desktop overview and the current controls in Explore the Containers view.

This guide explains the complete local-development workflow, what each control does, how to handle Compose projects, where the interface differs by release, and when a separate management interface such as Portainer makes more sense.

What a Docker GUI does

Docker containers are isolated application processes built from images. A graphical interface does not replace Docker; it gives you a visual way to see the objects Docker is already running and to perform common operations without memorising every command. Docker Desktop is an application for managing containers, applications, and images on the local machine. Docker’s official overview lists support for Mac, Linux, and Windows.

The main benefit is visibility. Instead of guessing whether a process is running, you can see running and stopped containers together, identify the project they belong to, open logs, inspect configuration, launch an interactive terminal, and check resource use from one place. The interface is especially useful while developing locally, when you repeatedly start a service, reproduce an error, inspect its output, and stop it again.

A GUI also makes destructive actions obvious. Deleting a container, for example, is a deliberate row action rather than an accidental command pasted into a shell. You should still understand what each action changes: stopping a container ends its running process, restarting starts it again, and deleting removes the container object. The image used to create it is a separate Docker object.

Before you install anything

Choose the operating-system instructions

Docker Desktop’s supported platforms are Mac, Linux, and Windows, but installation prerequisites and setup details vary by operating system and can change between releases. Use the current instructions for your platform rather than copying a requirement from an old tutorial. Docker maintains a dedicated Linux installation page; the Docker Desktop overview links to the relevant Mac and Windows guidance as well.

  • Confirm that your operating system is supported by the Docker Desktop release you intend to install.
  • Install the current release from Docker’s official documentation and complete any platform-specific permission, virtualisation, or system-service steps it requests.
  • Launch Docker Desktop and wait until the application reports that the Docker engine is available before trying to manage a container.
  • Keep in mind that menu names and panel layout can change. The controls described below reflect the interface documented for the current release surfaced in Docker’s Containers view documentation.

Decide what you are creating

There are two common local-development starting points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A single container: one service represented by one container object.
  • A Compose application: a project that groups related services. Docker Desktop displays Compose applications in the Containers view alongside individual containers.

The choice should come from the application you are running. A simple one-service experiment may be easier to understand as a single container. A web application with a database and a worker is generally managed as a Compose application so that its related services remain grouped.

Open and read the Containers view

After Docker Desktop is running, open Containers from the application navigation. The view includes both running and stopped containers, as well as Docker Compose applications. Docker’s documentation also describes search and filtering, grouping, bulk actions, resource columns, logs, inspection, Exec/Debug access, files, and statistics.

Find the object you need

Use search or filters when the list is long. Compose applications are grouped so that you can identify a project before expanding it to see its services. The status shown in the list distinguishes an active container from one that has stopped; do not assume that a stopped row is broken. Development containers are often stopped intentionally between work sessions.

Understand the row and detail views

The row is the quickest place for routine lifecycle actions. Selecting a container opens a detail view with deeper information and controls. Depending on the installed version and platform, you may see resource columns directly in the list, while logs, inspection data, files, terminal access, and statistics appear in the detail area. Docker notes that the interface evolves, so a control can move even when the underlying capability remains available.

Create a container or Compose application

Docker’s current Containers view documentation establishes what the view can manage, but the surfaced documentation does not provide a complete, universal click-by-click procedure for creating a brand-new container. The exact creation path depends on whether you are starting from an image, a Dockerfile-based project, or a Compose file, and the labels can differ between Docker Desktop releases.

Use this reliable workflow without assuming a label that may not exist in your version:

  1. Prepare the application definition. Decide whether you are using one image for a single container or a Compose project for multiple related services. Have the image or project files ready before opening Docker Desktop.
  2. Use the Docker workflow appropriate to that definition. Follow the creation entry point shown by your installed Docker Desktop release for the selected image or Compose project. Do not treat the Containers list itself as a substitute for defining the service.
  3. Return to Containers. Once Docker has created the object, locate the new row or its Compose application group. A newly created container may be running or stopped, depending on the creation workflow and its configuration.
  4. Verify before troubleshooting. Open the detail view, check the status, review logs, and confirm that any exposed port is available to open in a browser. If it exits immediately, the logs are the first place to look.

This approach is intentionally version-aware: Docker documents the management controls consistently, but it does not promise one creation dialog for every platform, release, image, and project type. If you need the exact fields for a particular image or Compose file, use the documentation associated with that workflow and then manage the resulting object in Containers.

Control a container’s lifecycle

The Containers view exposes the actions you need during development. Select the relevant row, then choose the lifecycle control shown for its current state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Action When to use it Result
Start A container is stopped and you want its configured process to run. Docker launches the container.
Stop You are finished for now or need to release the process. The running process is ended and the container becomes stopped.
Pause You need a temporary freeze while preserving the current running state. Execution is suspended until resumed.
Resume A paused container should continue. Execution continues from the paused state.
Restart A service needs a clean process restart without removing the container object. Docker stops and starts the container again.
Delete The container is no longer needed. The container object is removed. Re-create it from its image or project definition if you need it again.

For several services in one Compose application, select the application group when the interface offers a group-level action. Bulk actions are useful when a development project has multiple containers that should be stopped or started together; review the selection carefully before applying one.

Inspect, debug, and observe a running container

Read logs first

Open the container’s logs from the row or detail view to see the output produced by its process. Logs are the fastest way to distinguish an application error from a container that never started. Look for the first meaningful error rather than only the final shutdown line. When reporting an issue to a teammate, include the relevant time range and the service name so a Compose project is not confused with another container.

Inspect configuration and state

Use Inspect to examine the container’s Docker metadata and configuration. This is where you verify that you are looking at the intended object and can investigate how it was created without relying on memory. Inspection is particularly useful when two containers have similar names or when a Compose project contains several services.

Open a terminal with Exec or Debug

The documented interface includes Exec/Debug access. Use it when you need an interactive shell inside a running container to examine files, check an application’s own diagnostics, or perform a short-lived debugging task. A terminal session does not automatically make changes permanent; treat manual edits as temporary unless the application’s image or project definition is updated.

Browse container files

The detail view can expose a Files area. Use it to inspect the filesystem when logs point to a missing file, an unexpected generated artifact, or a configuration problem. Files inside a container should not be assumed to survive deletion of that container unless the application uses a separate persistence mechanism defined by its project.

Check statistics and resource columns

Docker Desktop documents resource columns and a statistics view. Use them to observe the container while reproducing a problem: high or steadily increasing usage can explain slow responses, while quiet statistics alongside an immediate exit point you back toward application logs and configuration. Treat the values as observations of the selected container at that time, not as a permanent performance rating.

Open the published application port

When a container exposes an application port, the Containers view can open that port in a browser. This avoids manually reconstructing the local address from memory. If the browser cannot connect, verify that the container is running, that the application inside it has finished starting, and that the exposed port shown by Docker is the one your application expects.

A repeatable local-development routine

  1. Start Docker Desktop. Wait for the engine to become ready.
  2. Open Containers. Search for the project or service you plan to work on.
  3. Start the container or Compose application. For a stopped object, use Start; for a paused one, use Resume.
  4. Watch logs during startup. Keep the log panel open until the service reaches its normal ready state.
  5. Open the exposed port. Use the port action to launch the application in your browser when one is available.
  6. Inspect only when needed. Use Inspect for metadata, Exec/Debug for an interactive check, Files for filesystem evidence, and Stats for resource observations.
  7. Stop cleanly at the end of the session. Stop the service or the Compose application rather than leaving unnecessary processes running.
  8. Delete deliberately. Remove a container only when you are sure you no longer need that container object and understand how you would recreate it.

Working with Compose applications in Docker Desktop

Compose applications are first-class entries in the Containers view, not merely a flat collection of unrelated rows. The grouping helps you see which services belong to one project and makes project-level management easier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the group to establish context

When a project has a web service, database, and background worker, expand the Compose group before diagnosing a failure. Read the logs for the service that reports the first error, then check the dependent services. A browser failure may originate in a database or worker that stopped earlier, so the group view prevents you from treating every symptom as a web-container problem.

Apply bulk actions carefully

Bulk controls are convenient for starting or stopping several selected objects, but they are also easy to apply too broadly. Filter or select the intended Compose application first, confirm the selection, and then perform the action. If one service must remain available for another project, avoid applying a workspace-wide action.

Keep the project definition authoritative

Use the Compose files and other project definitions as the durable description of the application. The GUI is excellent for observing and operating the resulting containers; ad-hoc changes made inside a running container may disappear when the container is recreated.

Troubleshoot common GUI problems

The container is listed but will not stay running

  • Open Logs and look for the earliest error during startup.
  • Use Inspect to confirm that you selected the intended container or Compose service.
  • Check whether a dependency in the same Compose group stopped first.
  • Use Exec/Debug only if the container remains running long enough to accept a terminal session.

The browser cannot reach the application

  • Confirm the container status is running rather than stopped or paused.
  • Use Docker Desktop’s port-opening control instead of guessing the address.
  • Check startup logs for an application that is still initialising or has exited.
  • Verify that you opened the port belonging to the correct service when multiple Compose services are present.

You cannot find a service

  • Clear or adjust search and filters.
  • Expand the relevant Compose application group.
  • Include stopped containers in your view; the Containers page is designed to show both running and stopped objects.
  • Check whether the service was deleted and needs to be recreated from its image or project definition.

The interface does not match this guide

Docker Desktop evolves. The documented feature set includes search and filtering, Compose grouping, resource columns, logs, inspection, Exec/Debug, files, and stats, but not every release or platform presents every control in the same position. Check the current Containers view documentation and use the labels in your installed release rather than treating an older screenshot as authoritative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Docker Desktop versus Portainer

Portainer is a separate container-management interface, not a component of Docker Desktop. Its documentation describes adding a container and then inspecting, editing or duplicating it, viewing logs and statistics, and accessing its console. Portainer’s overview identifies Community Edition as open source and Business Edition as a commercial offering. See the Portainer Containers documentation and its Welcome page for the editions and documented workflow.

Decision point Docker Desktop Portainer
Primary fit Local desktop development with a GUI for Docker containers, applications, and images. A dedicated management interface for container operations.
What the documented workflow emphasises Running and stopped containers, Compose applications, lifecycle controls, logs, inspection, terminal access, ports, files, and resource statistics. Adding a container, then inspecting, editing or duplicating it, viewing logs and statistics, and opening its console.
Project context Compose applications are grouped directly in the Containers view. Use the Portainer interface and its documented container workflow; it is not the Docker Desktop Containers view.
Edition model Docker Desktop is distributed as the desktop application described by Docker’s platform documentation. Community Edition is open source; Business Edition is commercial, according to Portainer’s overview.

Choose Docker Desktop when your priority is the most direct local-development workflow integrated with the Docker desktop application. Consider Portainer when you specifically want its management interface and the documented inspect, edit, duplicate, logs, statistics, and console workflow. Neither tool is universally superior; the practical choice depends on whether you are primarily developing on a local desktop or want Portainer’s separate management toolset.

Safe operating habits

  • Read before deleting. Delete removes the container object, so confirm that you can recreate it from the image or project definition.
  • Use logs before changing configuration. A clear startup error is safer evidence than trial-and-error edits.
  • Separate observation from modification. Inspect, Files, and Stats help you understand a problem; Exec/Debug can change the running environment.
  • Prefer project definitions for repeatability. Keep Compose files and image-building instructions as the source of truth for a development application.
  • Check the selected scope. A Compose group or bulk selection can affect several services at once.
  • Expect platform and release differences. Installation prerequisites and interface placement can change, so use current official documentation for your operating system and installed version.

What success looks like

You have a working GUI workflow when you can identify a container or Compose application, start it, verify readiness through logs, open its exposed port, inspect its configuration, use a terminal for a focused diagnostic, view resource statistics, and stop or remove it deliberately. Docker Desktop supplies those local controls in one application; Portainer supplies a separate interface when its management-focused workflow is the better fit.
