YouTube podcasts are playlists of videos: an MP3 by itself is not an episode. Growth is not guaranteed by setup, but clear organization and metadata make the show eligible for YouTube’s podcast discovery features.
How YouTube podcasts work
YouTube defines a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. A podcast can be created in YouTube Studio or by designating an existing playlist. The episode itself must be a video; if you have an audio-only recording, pair it with visuals and export it as a video before uploading. See YouTube’s podcast setup guidance.

A podcast playlist is distinct from a channel’s general video library. Keep it focused on the complete episodes that belong to that show. Clips and Shorts can support the show, but should be organized separately.
Create the podcast in YouTube Studio
- Create or designate a playlist. In YouTube Studio, create a podcast or select an existing playlist and designate it as a podcast. Enter the show title and description, choose its visibility, and add the podcast thumbnail. Interface labels can change; follow the podcast controls in Studio if wording differs.
- Name it for the show. Use the actual, descriptive show name. YouTube advises against generic titles and extra wording, including “podcast” unless that word is part of the show’s name. Explain the show’s subject and what listeners can expect in the description. See YouTube’s podcast discovery tips.
- Add a square thumbnail. YouTube requires a square podcast thumbnail to edit podcast details and recommends 1280 × 1280 pixels. That is a design specification, not a guarantee of more reach.
- Add the full episodes. Upload episode videos or add eligible existing videos. Include full-length episodes from every season in the same show playlist. Do not mix in clips, unrelated uploads, or videos from other channels.
- Arrange episodes for the format. For an episodic show, place the newest episode first. For a serial show whose story is meant to be followed from the beginning, place the oldest episode first. Check the order on the playlist after adding or moving videos.
- Review visibility and eligibility. Make the podcast public if you want it considered for public discovery. Some playlists are ineligible for podcast features, including playlists containing content you do not own; copyright-policy violations can also affect eligibility.
Choose how to put episodes on YouTube
You can upload videos directly in Studio, connect an RSS feed, or use a hosting platform or third-party upload tool that supports YouTube distribution. YouTube describes these routes in its podcast distribution guidance. Availability and exact steps depend on your host and current Studio interface.

| Route | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Studio upload | You make video episodes or want to manage each upload in YouTube. | Upload a video file, add it to the correct podcast playlist, and verify the episode order. |
| RSS feed | Your podcast host provides an RSS feed and you want to distribute its episodes to YouTube. | Confirm that your feed and host are supported, and review how audio episodes are represented as videos on YouTube. |
| Host or third-party distribution | Your existing podcast host offers a YouTube connection or publishing workflow. | Check the provider’s current feature availability and confirm that episodes land in the intended show playlist. |
Distribution does not remove the need to check the channel’s podcast playlist, metadata, visibility, and episode order after publishing.
Turn an audio podcast into video episodes
An audio recording alone cannot be added as a YouTube podcast episode. To publish an audio-first show, create a video file from the recording—for example, by pairing the audio with an image or other visuals—and upload that video. The platform guidance does not require a particular camera, microphone, or visual style. Choose a presentation you can produce consistently and that accurately represents the episode.

- Keep one public podcast playlist per show. This gives full episodes a clear home and avoids mixing separate programs.
- Make the playlist complete and ordered. Include full episodes across seasons and use newest-first ordering for episodic shows or oldest-first ordering for serial shows.
- Use consistent, descriptive show metadata. The show name should identify the program, while the description should explain its subject for prospective listeners.
- Keep clips separate. Promote episodes with clips and Shorts if useful to your publishing workflow, but do not put them in the full-episode podcast playlist.
- Make content ownership and policy compliance part of the workflow. Content you do not own and copyright-policy violations can affect podcast eligibility. Confirm that you have rights to the audio and visuals you publish.
Eligible podcasts may be included in YouTube Music and may receive podcast badges, placement on youtube.com/podcasts, Watch-page discovery, recommendations to people with similar interests, or improved search features. These are conditional possibilities, not guaranteed placements or audience growth. YouTube says youtube.com/podcasts uses social signals, machine learning, signals from other Google products and services, and human input.

Measure performance in YouTube Studio
Use podcast analytics in Studio to understand what viewers are doing and where they find episodes. YouTube’s described views include views and watch time, with deeper reporting that can include traffic sources, audience demographics, audience retention, revenue, impressions, and click-through rate. Metrics and labels available to a channel can vary and may change, so check the current Analytics interface.
Look for patterns in your own audience data rather than treating any one metric as a universal growth target. For example, traffic sources can show whether discovery comes from search or recommendations, while retention can help identify where listeners stop watching. Use those observations to make specific editorial or packaging decisions, then review the next episodes’ results.

Podcast playback and eligibility details
Podcast videos can be available for audio-only playback. YouTube says that disabling audio-only playback requires removing the video from all podcasts in its video settings. If you want an episode to remain part of a podcast, check the consequence of that setting before changing it.

Podcast inclusion and discovery features are conditional. A podcast playlist’s public status, the creator’s rights to its content, and compliance with YouTube policies matter; setting up a playlist does not ensure YouTube Music inclusion, a badge, placement, recommendations, or audience growth.

Common setup problems and fixes
- You cannot add an MP3 as an episode: make the recording into a video file first, or use a supported RSS or hosting distribution route.
- The podcast thumbnail or details cannot be edited: check that you have supplied a square thumbnail; YouTube recommends 1280 × 1280 pixels.
- A clip appears among full episodes: remove it from the podcast playlist and put it in a separate clips playlist. Do not designate that playlist as a podcast.
- Episodes play in the wrong order: reorder the playlist to match the show format—newest to oldest for episodic shows, oldest to newest for serial shows.
- The podcast does not receive expected discovery features: first check eligibility, public visibility, content ownership, and copyright-policy compliance. Even eligible podcasts are not guaranteed particular placements or growth.
- Audio-only playback is unavailable or settings are unclear: inspect the video’s podcast-related settings in Studio. YouTube says disabling audio-only playback requires removing the video from all podcasts.
