How to Create and Follow Routes Safely in Pokémon GO

To follow a Route, preview it in Pokémon GO, go to its marked start, tap Follow, walk the recorded path, and choose Complete Route from the Route menu at the end. To create one, record a continuous walk between suitable PokéStops or Gyms, add its details, and submit it for moderation. Choose only a path that is safe and publicly accessible to pedestrians; an in-game line is not a reason to enter a closed, private, or dangerous place.

What a Route is—and what to check before choosing one

A Route is a recorded path that Pokémon GO players can explore. Routes appear in Pokémon GO’s Nearby menu, and they can also be browsed in Campfire. Campfire helps you find Routes, but you must be at a Route’s start and use Pokémon GO to begin following it.

Before setting out, select a Route in Pokémon GO and review its preview. Niantic’s help materials say the preview can show its length, estimated time, description, tags, creator, and available direction. Treat these as planning details, not guarantees: the path still needs to be safe and accessible when you arrive. An estimated time is useful for comparing options, but it cannot account for every real-world condition or tell you whether a path is open today.

Compare Routes by the things that affect the walk

What to compare What to look for Why it matters
Safety and public access Whether the path appears to use public pedestrian areas and avoid dangerous, restricted, private, or inaccessible places Niantic’s policy requires Routes to be safe and publicly accessible to pedestrians. Your on-site judgment takes priority over the map.
Length and estimated time The values shown in the Route preview They help you decide whether the walk fits your plans. Niantic’s quality guidance describes Routes from 0.5 km to 20 km and recommends no more than 2 km for broader accessibility.
Start and endpoint Whether you can safely reach both marked locations You need to begin at the Route’s start. A Route can be one-way, reversible, or a loop, so check the direction options before you set out.
Continuity Whether the mapped path can be followed as one continuous walk A Route is intended to form one continuous path; do not assume you can safely bridge gaps or detour through inaccessible areas.
Description and tags Creator-provided notes and tags, including tags that describe a Route’s character or capabilities They can help set expectations, but they do not override posted restrictions or conditions on the ground.

For a first Route, a shorter option with an accessible start and endpoint may be easier to assess than a long or unfamiliar one. That is a practical choice, not a guarantee that a particular Route is suitable: check the actual path and conditions before following it. A Route’s creator and description can provide context, but a creator’s choice of title, tags, or badge does not establish that the route remains open or suitable.

Direction matters as well as distance. Check whether the Route offers a reverse direction, is intended to be followed one way, or returns to its starting location as a loop. The selected start determines where you need to go before tapping Follow; an endpoint that is convenient to reach may not be the start for the direction currently offered. Compare both the route line and the direction options before leaving.

How to follow a Route in Pokémon GO

  1. Find a Route. Open the Nearby menu in Pokémon GO and browse available Routes. You can also use Campfire to browse, but starting still requires Pokémon GO and being at the Route’s start.
  2. Preview it. Check the displayed length, estimated time, description, tags, creator, and direction options. Decide whether the endpoints and path are appropriate for your walk.
  3. Travel to the marked start. Do not tap Follow expecting to begin from elsewhere. Niantic’s instructions say to go to the Route’s start before beginning it.
  4. Start following. Select the Route and tap Follow. Use the map’s marked path as a guide while remaining on safe, publicly accessible pedestrian routes.
  5. Pause if needed. Open the active Route menu and use its pause control if you need to stop. To resume, return near the location where you paused.
  6. Complete it in the app. At the endpoint, open the menu and choose Complete Route. Reaching the endpoint by itself may not be enough: if you have not followed the full recorded distance, the game may not treat the Route as complete.

Do not follow the map into a hazard

If the displayed line leads toward a closed path, private property, a restricted site, or a dangerous crossing, do not follow it into that area. Stop, pause, or quit the Route and choose a safer option. Niantic’s policy permits roads through residential neighborhoods, but that does not make every road or crossing suitable for walking. A road with car traffic, for example, is not the same as a pedestrian path.

Use the active Route menu to report a Route if it violates Niantic’s rules. Reporting is appropriate for a problematic Route; it is not a substitute for turning back when the path is unsafe or inaccessible. If the path shown in the game and the conditions on site disagree, let the real-world conditions guide your decision. An approved Route can become unusable because of a closure or other changed condition, and the map does not grant permission to enter a closed area.

How to create and submit a Route

Creating a Route means physically walking and recording the intended continuous path, not just drawing a line on a map. Niantic’s documented flow starts from either Create New Route in the Nearby Routes section or the Routes section of your Trainer Profile.

  1. Choose the creation entry point. Open the Nearby Routes section or the Routes section of your Trainer Profile, then choose Create New Route.
  2. Select the start and end. Choose suitable PokéStop or Gym locations. For a loop, use the same location for both endpoints.
  3. Walk and record the path. Follow the route you want others to use, keeping it continuous, safe, and publicly accessible to pedestrians. The creation instructions state a minimum Route length of 0.1 km.
  4. Pause or quit carefully if needed. You can pause or quit a recording. If you pause, you must resume near the pause point; plan your recording so that you can return there if necessary.
  5. Add Route details. Provide a descriptive title and description, add optional tags, and choose a badge image. Keep titles and descriptions free of personally identifying information.
  6. Review and submit. Check the Route and its details before sending it for moderation. A submitted Route is not immediately available to other players; it appears only after approval.

Choose a path other people can actually use

Niantic’s quality guidance gives a broad range of 0.5 km to 20 km and recommends keeping Routes to 2 km or less to make them accessible to more players. Those figures serve a different purpose from the creation instructions’ stated minimum of 0.1 km: the minimum is a submission requirement in the creation flow, while the range and recommendation describe Route quality and accessibility guidance. Do not treat the 0.1 km minimum as a recommendation for a useful Route.

Prefer clear pedestrian paths with defined endpoints and no breaks that force players into unsafe or inaccessible areas. Consider whether someone unfamiliar with the neighborhood can recognize where to go, whether the start and end can be reached, and whether the selected direction makes sense. Use description and tags to communicate useful context without including identifying details.

One continuous path is a quality and safety consideration, not merely a recording convenience. Before submitting, consider the whole walk a follower will be directed to take: start, intermediate stretches, and finish. A Route that is easy for its creator to navigate may still be confusing to someone unfamiliar with the area, or may depend on access that is not public. Do not submit a path that asks players to improvise around a gap or enter a place they cannot lawfully and safely access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tags can describe a Route’s character or capabilities; for example, a tag may indicate whether it is suitable for raids. Tags are optional and should help players understand what the Route offers, rather than stand in for essential path details. A title and description should be useful to prospective followers while avoiding personally identifying information. Niantic’s FAQ says creators cannot restrict who interacts with a Route, so plan its public-facing details accordingly.

Route safety rules: places to avoid

Niantic says Routes should be safe and publicly accessible by pedestrians. Its policy prohibits Routes that include or direct players through dangerous or restricted areas, private residences, sensitive places, schools, adult-service locations, or gated locations. Examples of dangerous locations include highways, bridges with car traffic, railway tracks, construction sites, and airport runways.

  • Do not enter private or gated property. A Route must not send players through a private residence or gated location.
  • Avoid sensitive and prohibited locations. Do not create or follow a Route through a school, adult-service location, or other sensitive place covered by Niantic’s policy.
  • Stay away from dangerous infrastructure and work areas. Highways, railway tracks, construction sites, airport runways, and bridges with car traffic are among Niantic’s examples of dangerous places.
  • Distinguish passing nearby from being routed through. Niantic states that simply passing by listed locations is allowed and should not lead to enforcement action. A Route that directs players through a prohibited or dangerous area is different.
  • Check real-world access. Closures, hazards, and other conditions can change. Do not enter an area that is currently closed, unsafe, or inaccessible just because a Route was approved or its line is visible in the game.

For creators, the standard is the path players are directed to take, not merely the points selected on the map. For followers, it is reasonable to stop when on-site conditions do not match what the map suggests. The game’s route line cannot establish that a path is open or safe today.

There is an important distinction between a Route passing by a listed location and directing players through it. Niantic’s policy says simply passing by such locations is allowed and should not lead to enforcement action. That does not make entering the location part of a safe route: follow the public pedestrian path, respect posted access limits, and turn back if the route itself goes somewhere restricted or dangerous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety is also about accessibility and continuity. A path can be publicly accessible in general yet unsuitable at a particular point because it is closed, blocked, or otherwise inaccessible. Niantic’s quality guidance calls for a continuous path with clearly defined start and end points. For a follower, that is a reason to inspect the real route rather than assume the line is a guarantee. For a creator, it is a reason to select a path whose actual course is clear and public.

Pausing, completion, and common problems

The Route will not start

Confirm that you are at the marked start and are using Pokémon GO. Campfire can be used to browse Routes, but it does not replace starting the Route in the game. If you are checking eligibility, verify the current requirement in the app: Niantic’s surfaced materials conflict about the minimum level for following a Route.

Also review the available direction before heading out. If the Route can be followed in different directions, the start shown for the direction you selected is the point you need to reach. Previewing first helps distinguish a problem with the start location from a Route that simply is not available in the direction you expected.

You paused and cannot resume

Return near the place where you paused. Niantic’s instructions say a paused Route must be resumed near its pause point. If conditions have changed and returning is unsafe, do not force the walk; quit or leave it paused rather than entering an unsafe area. The same principle applies while recording a Route: if you pause creation, you need to resume near the pause point.

You reached the endpoint but it is not complete

Open the active Route menu and select Complete Route. Reaching the endpoint alone may not finish the activity if you have not followed the full recorded distance. If you have not covered the path as recorded, the endpoint may not register as a completed Route. Follow the path and distance shown in the game rather than assuming that arriving at the endpoint is the only completion condition.

The Route is unsafe, closed, or inaccessible

Do not continue into the affected area. Pause or quit, choose another safe path, and report the Route through the active Route menu if it violates Niantic’s rules. A report addresses the Route; it does not make the current path safe to traverse. Traffic, closures, weather, and accessibility conditions require judgment at the location, not just reliance on a route preview.

You cannot find a Route in Campfire or Nearby

Use Nearby in Pokémon GO to browse Routes available there, or use Campfire to browse. Campfire is a discovery option, not the place to start following: once you choose a Route, go to its marked start and begin in Pokémon GO. If you can browse a Route but cannot begin it, check your starting location and current in-app eligibility guidance.

Who can create or follow Routes?

Niantic’s materials do not give a consistent current threshold for following Routes. An older FAQ says Level 5, while an official Routes index result says Level 7. Because those statements conflict, neither should be treated as a definitive current requirement; check the live app for eligibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The older FAQ states Level 30 for creating Routes and notes restrictions for child accounts. Those details may not reflect current eligibility, so check the creation option and current in-app guidance rather than relying on the older figures. A Route creation option that is unavailable to an account may reflect eligibility or account restrictions.

In practical terms, do not use an older level figure as a promise that the feature will be available. Check the Route controls in your own account, and use the current app’s message or help guidance if creation or following is unavailable. The level conflict applies specifically to following; the older creation FAQ’s Level 30 statement and child-account note are also subject to change. No definitive current threshold can be established from the conflicting help references alone.

What creators should know after submitting

Plan the Route and its public description before submission. Niantic’s FAQ says a Route ordinarily cannot be edited or deleted after submission. It also says a creator cannot restrict who can interact with a Route. The creator’s Trainer nickname is shown unless the Show your Trainer Name option is disabled during creation.

That makes the pre-submit review important: check the endpoints, continuous walking path, description, tags, badge image, and public-access conditions before you send the Route for moderation. Approval means the Route has passed the submission process; it does not guarantee that later closures or changing conditions will leave the path usable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before tapping submit, make sure the title and description explain the Route without identifying you personally or revealing personal information. Review whether the optional tags accurately characterize the path, whether the badge image is appropriate, and whether the marked start, endpoint, and direction are clear. Since the Route is subject to moderation and does not appear to other players until approved, submission is not the same as immediate publication.

Creators should also account for the fact that other players may interact with the Route: Niantic’s FAQ says there is no creator control to limit who can do so. If you are uncomfortable with the Trainer nickname being displayed, the FAQ identifies the Show your Trainer Name option to disable during creation. Given that edits or deletion ordinarily are not available after submission, settle those choices before sending the Route for review.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a Route in Pokémon GO?

Choose Create New Route from Nearby Routes or the Routes section of your Trainer Profile. Select suitable PokéStop or Gym start and end points, walk and record the continuous path, add a title, description, optional tags, and badge image, then review and submit it for moderation. A loop can use the same location for both endpoints. The creation instructions state a 0.1 km minimum; the quality guidance separately describes Routes from 0.5 km to 20 km and recommends 2 km or less for wider accessibility.

How do I start following a Route?

Preview and select a Route in Pokémon GO, travel to its marked start, then tap Follow. Campfire can help you find Routes, but you need to start the activity in Pokémon GO from the Route’s start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I follow a Route?

First confirm you are at the correct marked start, using Pokémon GO rather than Campfire to begin, and have chosen the direction you intend to follow. Eligibility may also be involved. Niantic help materials conflict between Level 5 and Level 7 for following, so check the current requirement shown in the app rather than treating either older figure as definitive.

How do I finish a Route?

At the endpoint, open the active Route menu and select Complete Route. Reaching the endpoint alone may not complete it if you have not followed the full recorded distance.

Can I pause a Route and resume later?

Yes. Use the pause control in the active Route menu, then return near the location where you paused to resume. Do not return to that location if doing so would require entering an unsafe or inaccessible area.

Are Pokémon GO Routes safe?

Niantic says Routes should be safe and publicly accessible to pedestrians, but the map cannot guarantee that a path is open or safe at the moment you arrive. Avoid private, restricted, dangerous, gated, or otherwise inaccessible places, and stop or pause if real-world conditions make the route unsafe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I edit or delete a Route after submitting it?

Niantic’s FAQ says a Route ordinarily cannot be edited or deleted after submission. Review the route, details, and public-access conditions carefully before sending it for moderation.

Can a creator choose who interacts with a Route?

No. Niantic’s FAQ says creators cannot restrict who can interact with a Route. The creator’s Trainer nickname is shown unless Show your Trainer Name is disabled during creation.
