How to Create and Edit Android Shortcuts for Apps, Settings, and Actions

Android shortcuts are not managed by one universal editor. On Google-documented Android and Pixel phones, touch and hold an app icon, then drag one of the app’s offered actions to the home screen. On Samsung Galaxy, add an app icon from the Apps screen with Add to Home or drag it there. Whether an app exposes actions, whether a launcher supports them, and whether a direct Settings link exists all depend on the app, launcher, phone model, and Android version.

What an Android shortcut actually is

An Android shortcut is a home-screen entry point that gets you to an app, a specific action inside an app, or (on some devices) a system function. It is different from the app itself and different from a widget.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • App icon: Opens the app’s main screen.
  • App action shortcut: Opens a destination the app publishes, such as composing an email, navigating to a saved location, messaging a contact, or resuming a game.
  • Widget: A small app-controlled panel that can display information or controls directly on the home screen.
  • Settings link: A route to a system Settings page, available only where the phone’s launcher or a particular widget provides one.

Android does not guarantee that every app offers action shortcuts. A missing menu after a long press usually means the app has not published any, rather than that your phone is malfunctioning. The wording and placement of controls also vary among Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and other launchers.

Choose the right shortcut type

What you want Use What you can expect What you can edit
Open an app App icon Launches the app’s normal start screen Position, folder, and home-screen page; not the app’s internal destination
Jump to a frequent task App-provided shortcut Opens an action the app has defined Placement; the app controls the action name and destination
See data or operate controls without opening the app Widget Shows the app’s own panel, if one is supplied Placement and, where supported, size or configuration
Open one specific Settings page Device-specific launcher or widget feature Available only on phones that expose that destination Placement; availability and label are controlled by the device software

Do not treat these as interchangeable. An app shortcut is a published entry point; a widget is a separate home-screen component; an app icon merely starts the app.

Add an app action shortcut on Google Android or a Pixel phone

Google’s documented home-screen flow applies to supported Android and Pixel launchers. Some Pixel home-screen instructions are identified by Google as applying to Android 14 and later, so your labels may differ on an older release.

  1. Locate the app. Find its icon on a home-screen page or open the app list and locate it there.
  2. Reveal the app’s menu. Touch and hold the icon. Keep holding until the shortcut menu appears, then lift your finger.
  3. Check the available actions. The menu can contain one or more destinations supplied by the app. It can also contain ordinary icon controls, such as app information or removal options.
  4. Place the action. Touch and hold the desired action in the menu, then drag it to the home-screen position where you want it. Release your finger to drop it.
  5. Test it. Tap the new shortcut once. It should open the advertised destination rather than the app’s generic start screen.

If holding the icon produces no action list, the app may simply offer no shortcuts. Installing the latest version of the app can change what it publishes, but Android cannot manufacture an action that the app does not provide.

Add only the app icon on a Google or Pixel home screen

When you want the app itself rather than one of its internal actions, drag the app icon from the app list onto an open home-screen position. This creates a normal app icon. It does not create a shortcut to a particular conversation, location, document, or other in-app destination.

Add an app icon on a Samsung Galaxy phone

Samsung documents a different path for placing an app icon. The exact menu can vary by carrier, software version, and Galaxy model.

  1. Open the Apps screen.
  2. Touch and hold the app you want.
  3. Tap Add to Home if that option appears.
  4. Alternatively, keep holding the app and drag it to the desired home-screen page and position, then release.

This procedure adds the app icon. It should not be confused with an app-internal action shortcut. If a Galaxy app publishes actions, those actions may appear in a long-press menu, but Samsung’s app-icon instructions do not promise that every app will expose them.

Move, organize, or remove a shortcut

Move an item

Touch and hold the icon or action shortcut, then drag it to another position. Drag it to the edge of the screen to move it to an adjacent home-screen page, or onto another compatible icon to create or use a folder where your launcher supports folders.

Remove it from the home screen

Touch and hold the item and drag it to Remove, then release. This deletes the home-screen entry only. The app remains installed and can still be opened from the app list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstall the app

Use Uninstall only when you intend to remove the application from the phone. Google distinguishes Remove from Uninstall: the first changes the home screen, while the second removes the app from the device. A shortcut disappearing after an uninstall is expected; removing a shortcut alone does not uninstall anything.

Change a shortcut’s label or destination

Stock Android and manufacturer launchers do not provide a universal editor for an app-published shortcut’s name, icon, or target. Those details come from the app. You can normally reposition the item, put it in a folder, or remove it. If you need a different destination, look for another action that the app publishes or use the app’s own configuration options. Do not assume that renaming an icon changes the action it launches.

Can you create a shortcut to any Settings page?

There is no single Android consumer procedure that creates a direct shortcut to every individual Settings screen. Availability depends on the phone’s launcher, Android release, and any Settings or system widgets supplied by the manufacturer.

On a device that supports such an entry, try the launcher’s widget picker:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen.
  2. Open Widgets (the wording can differ).
  3. Look for a Settings-related widget or shortcut and inspect the destinations it offers.
  4. If a specific Settings destination is listed, drag it to the home screen and test it.

These steps are an availability check, not a guarantee. A phone may show a general Settings widget without exposing links to particular pages, or it may show no Settings shortcut at all. If the widget picker and the icon long-press menus do not list the destination, use the normal Settings search or navigation instead.

Use a widget when a shortcut is not enough

A widget can be the better choice when your goal is to see information or perform a control without first opening an app. For example, a calendar widget can show upcoming events, while a music widget can expose playback controls. The app must supply the widget, and the launcher determines which sizes and placement options are available.

To check for one, open the home-screen widget picker and browse the app’s entries. Drag a widget to an empty area, then complete any configuration screen it presents. Resizing or configuring a widget does not edit an app shortcut; it changes the widget instance.

Why shortcuts differ between phones

Factor How it affects the result
App support The app decides whether to publish static or changing destinations. No app support means no app-action menu.
Launcher The default home app displays menus, accepts dragged shortcuts, and may support pinned shortcut requests.
Android version Home-screen instructions and available controls can change between releases; Google calls out Android 14 and later for some Pixel guidance.
Manufacturer software Samsung and other manufacturers can use different labels and flows from Google’s Pixel documentation.
Carrier and model Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by carrier, software version, and device model.
Permissions or account state An app may hide an action until you sign in, create content, or grant access needed for that destination.

How app-created and pinned shortcuts work

Android’s developer model describes three broad kinds of app shortcuts:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Static shortcuts are declared by the app and are normally available whenever the app is installed.
  • Dynamic shortcuts are updated by the app as your usage or content changes, such as a recently contacted person or a current destination.
  • Pinned shortcuts are copies placed directly on the launcher at the user’s request.

This terminology explains why two users can see different menus in the same app. Dynamic entries can change, disappear, or be replaced by the app. A launcher can also limit what it displays.

When an app asks Android to pin a shortcut, the request goes through the default launcher. The launcher asks you for approval; an API response indicating that pinning is supported does not mean that you have approved it. The shortcut is created only after approval, at which point Android sends the app the result of that request. An app cannot silently place arbitrary entries on your home screen.

Troubleshoot a shortcut that is missing or does not work

Symptom Likely cause What to try
No menu appears when you hold an app icon The app publishes no shortcuts, or the launcher does not expose them Try another app known to provide actions, confirm you are using the default launcher, and check whether the app has an update.
The menu has only general icon options No app-specific action is available in the current state Open the app and complete any setup or sign-in required for the action, then check the icon again.
Dragging an action does nothing The launcher may not support placing that item, or the destination is full Use an empty home-screen space, try another page, and repeat the long-press-and-drag gesture.
The shortcut opens the wrong screen The app changed or removed the destination Remove the old entry, inspect the current long-press menu, and add the currently offered action.
A shortcut vanished after an app update The app changed its static or dynamic shortcut list Check the app’s current menu and recreate the entry if the action is still available.
An expected Settings link is absent Your device does not expose that Settings destination through its launcher or widgets Search Settings directly; do not assume another Android phone will offer the same link.
An icon disappeared and you fear the app was deleted The item was removed from the home screen rather than uninstalled Look in the app list. If the app is there, add its icon again.

A practical workflow for setting up a faster home screen

  1. Define the destination. Decide whether you need the app’s start screen, an app action, a widget, or a Settings page.
  2. Check the app’s menu first. Long-press the icon. If the needed action is listed, drag that action rather than adding the generic icon.
  3. Use the documented path for your phone. Pixel and Google launchers use the action-menu drag flow; Galaxy phones use the Apps screen and can offer Add to Home.
  4. Check widgets for system functions. Use the widget picker only to see what your particular device supports; availability is not universal.
  5. Organize without deleting. Move entries into useful positions or folders. Choose Remove when you only want to clean up the home screen.
  6. Retest after updates. App updates and launcher changes can alter dynamic shortcuts, so recreate an entry if its destination disappears.

What “editing” means on Android

For most users, editing a shortcut means changing its location: moving it between pages, placing it in a folder, or removing it from the home screen. Android does not offer one cross-device screen where you can rewrite every shortcut’s title, icon, and target.

App-published actions remain under the app’s control. A messaging app can add or remove contact entries; a navigation app can change destinations; a game can expose a resume action. Your launcher can display, place, or remove those entries, but it does not generally redesign the action itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That separation is useful when diagnosing problems: if an action is missing, inspect the app and its account state; if an item is misplaced, edit the home-screen arrangement; if a Settings destination is unavailable, check the device-specific widget and launcher capabilities.

Quick reference by goal

Goal First thing to try If it is unavailable
Open an app quickly Add or drag its app icon to the home screen Check the app list and confirm the app is installed
Open an app action Long-press the app icon and drag the listed action The app may not publish that action
Reach a particular Settings page Inspect the home-screen widget picker for a Settings entry Use Settings search or normal navigation
See controls or information at a glance Add the app’s widget The app may not supply a widget, or your launcher may limit placement
Clean up an old entry Long-press and choose or drag to Remove Use Uninstall only if you intend to delete the app

Bottom line

Start with the app icon’s long-press menu. If the app offers the action you need, drag that action to the home screen; if you only need the app, add its icon. Galaxy phones provide an additional Add to Home path from the Apps screen. For individual Settings pages, inspect your device’s widgets and launcher, because Android has no universal shortcut creator. You can reliably move or remove home-screen entries, but the app—not a universal Android editor—controls the names and destinations of app-provided actions.
