You can personalize Telegram with its built-in appearance controls, or create a named cloud theme with custom colors and a wallpaper that you can share. Android and Telegram Desktop have the most detailed in-app editors; iPhone, iPad, and the native macOS app offer appearance, accent-color, and background controls. For broader editing, use Telegram’s official online Theme Editor.
A saved cloud theme can be edited and shared, but it may not look identical on every device: Telegram’s clients have different layouts and controls. The steps below identify where to start on each platform and how to save, share, and troubleshoot a theme.
What a Telegram theme can change
A theme can combine a base appearance—such as day or night—with an accent color, outgoing-message colors, other interface colors, and chat wallpaper. Depending on the client and the controls it exposes, you may also be able to use gradients, patterns, tiled backgrounds, or animated message-color effects. Telegram describes these components in its theme API documentation; not every client offers every control.
A background change on one device is not automatically the same thing as creating a shareable cloud theme. Use the built-in appearance controls for a quick local adjustment; create or edit a named theme and save it to Telegram’s cloud when you want a theme link or want to work across clients. Telegram’s theme documentation describes cloud themes and the different editing options by platform.

Before you start
- Use an official Telegram app or the official Telegram Desktop client, and update it if a control described here is missing. You can identify official apps through Telegram’s downloads page.
- Sign in to the same Telegram account on the devices where you want to access the cloud theme.
- Decide whether you need a quick appearance change, a theme for one client, or a theme to share and check on several platforms.
- If you plan to use a photo as wallpaper, have it ready. Low-detail or muted images are easier to read over than busy, high-contrast ones.
Telegram identifies Android and Telegram Desktop as having advanced in-app theme editors. Its documentation describes custom accent-color and background controls on iOS and macOS, with the online editor available for more extensive editing. Menu names and layouts can vary by app version.
Make a quick appearance change
If you only want a different color scheme or chat background, start in the appearance settings rather than creating a shareable theme. Choose a built-in day, night, or tinted appearance, adjust an accent color if the client offers it, and select a chat background. Some versions also offer automatic night-mode behavior; its options differ by client and may use time, ambient light, or system settings.
On iPhone or iPad, begin at Settings → Appearance. On the native Telegram macOS app, open Settings → Appearance and look for the chat-background control there. On Android and Telegram Desktop, look under Settings → Chat Settings for theme and appearance controls. If labels differ, look for the appearance, theme, or chat-background section rather than assuming another platform’s menu will match.
Create a custom theme on Android
- Open Telegram and go to Settings → Chat Settings.
- Open the theme or appearance controls and choose Create New Theme, or the closest create/edit option shown.
- Name the theme. Telegram starts it from the current colors and wallpaper.
- Open the palette or editor. Select an interface element, then choose its color. Change a few elements at a time so you can see which adjustment affects each part of the screen.
- Adjust the background or wallpaper if needed, then save the theme.
- Open the saved theme’s options to edit it again, delete it, or create a share link.
Telegram’s Android support guide documents this palette-based workflow: Create a theme on Android. The exact labels can change. Before settling on a design, check incoming and outgoing messages, links, reply previews, timestamps, buttons, and media controls—not just the main chat surface.

Create a custom theme in Telegram Desktop
- Open Telegram Desktop and go to Settings → Chat Settings.
- Open the theme menu and choose Create New Theme. The new theme begins with the current colors and wallpaper.
- Use the color-palette panel to select an interface element and assign a new color. Inspect the preview as you go.
- Change the background if you want one, and enable tiled behavior if it suits the image or pattern.
- Save the theme, enter a name, and choose a sharing link if you want to publish it. Save again to finish.
The steps follow Telegram’s Desktop theme guide. Desktop’s larger editor is a practical place to make many individual color adjustments, but do not assume that every element will render identically on a phone or another desktop client.
Customize appearance on iPhone, iPad, and macOS
iPhone and iPad
Open Settings → Appearance and choose from the appearance, accent-color, and chat-background controls available in your version. Telegram describes iOS as supporting custom accent colors and backgrounds, but its in-app editor may expose fewer individual interface-color controls than Android or Telegram Desktop. For a more complete cloud theme, use the online editor below rather than expecting the Android palette workflow to appear on iOS.
Native macOS app
In the native Telegram macOS app, open Settings → Appearance and look for Chat Background and the available accent-color controls. This is not necessarily the same interface as Telegram Desktop running on macOS: the two apps can have different menus and editor capabilities. For advanced edits, use the official online editor.
Use Telegram’s online Theme Editor
- Open themes.telegram.org and sign in with the Telegram account associated with the theme.
- Choose the platform or theme type, then create a theme or open one to edit.
- Set its name and adjust colors using the picker or hexadecimal color values. Add or change the wallpaper if desired.
- Choose Save and apply theme. Open the resulting Telegram message or link in the app and apply the theme on the clients you want to use.
Telegram’s documentation says the editor can create themes from scratch or edit existing ones, accepts hex values, and supplies a sharing link after the first save. If the site is blocked on your network or in your country, availability may depend on that network or location; Telegram mentions a VPN as a possible workaround, not a universal requirement.

Add or change a wallpaper
You can choose a background through the app’s chat-background settings, or attach a wallpaper to a cloud theme. Telegram documents a way to use a wallpaper link in a theme:
- Open the wallpaper in Telegram.
- Use its sharing control and copy its
t.me/bg/...link. - Add that link as the wallpaper value in the online Theme Editor, then save the theme.
For Telegram Desktop, adding ?mode=tiled to a wallpaper link requests a tiled background. For example, t.me/bg/example?mode=tiled illustrates the format; it is not a working wallpaper link. See Telegram’s theme documentation for wallpaper-link details.
Keep the image or pattern subtle enough that text remains legible. Busy photographs, faces, text, and bright objects behind message bubbles can compete with the conversation. A gradient can add depth, but check contrast across the whole screen rather than only in one part of the preview.
Save, apply, share, and update a theme
Apply a theme you received
Open the theme link in Telegram. It normally shows a preview; choose Apply, Apply Theme, or the equivalent confirmation to use it. Telegram’s theme guide describes this preview-and-confirm flow.

Share your theme
A cloud theme link uses the form https://t.me/addtheme/shortname. The creator can choose a short name, and Telegram says one link can support multiple platforms when the theme includes those platforms. A recipient can open the link, preview the theme, and apply it. A link does not guarantee identical rendering across clients.
Update an existing cloud theme
Edit the original theme and save and apply the changes to update that cloud theme. Telegram says updates propagate automatically to users of the theme. This is different from creating a new theme identity or link, which produces a separate theme rather than updating the original.

Check color pairs and interface states, not just the overall palette. A design can look balanced in an editor and still make long messages or controls hard to read.
- Check main message text against incoming and outgoing bubble colors.
- Check timestamps, secondary text, links, reply and quote text, and selected text.
- Look at buttons, navigation labels, attachment controls, media controls, and error or notification states.
- Preview long messages, captions, groups, and channels as well as short one-to-one chats.
- Test the wallpaper behind both types of message bubble; soften or remove a pattern or gradient if it interferes with text.
Light themes are often easier to use in bright surroundings; dark themes can feel less bright in a dark room, but very dark gray text on black can be difficult to distinguish. Tinted themes are distinctive but need the same contrast checks. If automatic night mode is enabled, check the theme in both appearances so a mode change is not mistaken for a lost customization.

Troubleshoot common Telegram theme problems
“Create New Theme” is missing
- On Android or Telegram Desktop, check Settings → Chat Settings; on iOS or native macOS, check Settings → Appearance.
- Update the official app and confirm you are using an official client. Some platforms have more limited in-app editing than others.
- Try the online Theme Editor if you need broader editing controls.
The appearance keeps changing
Check whether automatic night mode or a system appearance setting is changing the active mode. Also confirm you saved the theme rather than only previewing it, and check whether you are looking at separate appearance settings in different clients. Reapply the intended theme and confirm it appears in the saved theme list.
The theme looks different on a phone and computer
Cloud availability does not mean that clients have identical layouts or theme controls. Some interface elements exist only on certain platforms, and platform-specific settings may be needed. Edit the relevant platform versions in the online editor and test each target client; do not assume that an element name maps perfectly across every app.
The wallpaper is missing
- Check whether you added the wallpaper to the theme, rather than changing only a local background.
- Confirm that the
t.me/bg/...link was copied correctly and save the theme after adding it. - Check whether the client you are viewing uses a separate platform configuration.
Colors are unreadable
Reopen the editor and increase the contrast between text and its surface. Try removing or softening gradients and patterns, and preview links, quoted messages, captions, and controls. If the editor itself becomes hard to use, switch temporarily to a default theme while you make corrections.
You want Telegram’s default appearance back
Open the theme or appearance controls under Settings → Chat Settings or Settings → Appearance, depending on the client, and choose a default option such as the standard day or night theme. Telegram’s translation resources include a control for switching back to the default Telegram theme: default-theme label example.
An older theme no longer looks right
A legacy theme file may not account for interface elements added by newer clients. Instead of expecting an old file to remain a perfect match, start from a current built-in theme, recreate the palette, and test on current versions of the clients you use. Keep a copy of custom color values or the theme file if you may want to revise it.
Advanced: theme files and the Telegram API
Most users do not need API calls: the in-app editors and online Theme Editor cover ordinary creation and sharing. Developers and theme-tool authors can use Telegram’s theme-creation method and theme API documentation to work with titles, slugs, uploaded theme documents, base-theme settings, accents, message colors, and wallpaper settings. The method documents errors including invalid theme MIME type and invalid title. API-level tools and theme files may not expose or render every visual element on every client; consult Telegram’s current documentation when building for a particular platform.
Theme customization changes appearance, not chat encryption or privacy. It does not require a third-party theme app; use Telegram’s official clients and editor for this workflow.
