To run a 24/7 preschool story stream on YouTube with FFmpeg, put compatible video files in an FFconcat playlist, loop that playlist, encode the output to a YouTube-supported profile, and send it to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The playlist controls which stories play; FFmpeg delivers the encoded feed. A continuously running command is not, by itself, a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime or a complete archive.
What you need before building the playlist
- An installed FFmpeg build with the demuxer and encoders you plan to use. Options can vary by build, so check the documentation for your installed release and test with your actual files.
- Story videos you have the right to stream, stored where the FFmpeg process can read them.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected video and audio bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and monitoring stream health.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, plus a broadcast created or scheduled in Live Control Room.
- A plan for monitoring, restarting after failures, and preserving recordings if you need a full archive.
Inspect each file before concatenating. Check its video and audio streams, codecs, time base, dimensions, frame rate, and duration. The concat demuxer works best when the files have matching streams and compatible parameters; inaccurate durations or streams with unequal actual lengths can cause timestamp artifacts or gaps. Choose how to join the story videos

Do not confuse the concat demuxer with FFmpeg’s concat protocol: they are different approaches, and the protocol only applies to certain containers. For the ordinary local playlist-to-YouTube workflow below, the demuxer is the simpler choice when your files are compatible.
Create and test the FFconcat list
1. Put the files in playback order
Make a plain-text file named stories.ffconcat in the directory containing the story videos. Use the first line and one file entry per clip, in the order you want them played:

file 'story-03.mp4'Use paths the FFmpeg process can access. Relative paths are convenient when the list and videos are together. Keep the default safe-path behavior when possible; do not disable safety checks or use unsafe paths for files you do not trust. If a filename contains special characters, follow FFmpeg’s documented FFconcat escaping rules.
2. Play the list once before looping
Test that the complete sequence plays from start to finish before making it repeat. For example, to write a temporary joined file from compatible inputs, run:
ffmpeg -f concat -i stories.ffconcat -c copy test-joined.mp4This copy-mode test does not fix incompatible files. If it reports stream or timestamp problems, normalize the files first or build a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes them. Check the result at every transition, including audio. A single file with a different frame size, codec, audio layout, or inaccurate duration can undermine an otherwise clean playlist.

Set a practical YouTube encoding profile
YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Audio may use AAC or MP3. For a straightforward H.264 SDR setup, the following YouTube recommendations are useful reference points, not a promise that every connection will sustain them:

Choose one profile your upload connection can sustain consistently; leave headroom for normal network variation. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Its recommended stereo audio setting is AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Review the current YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate table for other resolutions, frame rates, and encoding options.
Loop the playlist and send it to YouTube Live
This example assumes compatible story files with video and stereo audio, an FFmpeg build that supports the shown options and H.264/AAC encoders, and a 1080p30 SDR output. Adapt and test it rather than treating it as a universal command. It re-encodes to H.264 at YouTube’s 1080p30 recommendation, AAC audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. It does not include a local archive or a restart supervisor.

- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a broadcast in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key provided for the broadcast. The exact server URL and key are account-specific; do not share or publish the key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Save the server URL and stream key somewhere private. Insert them into the output destination in the command below, using the exact ingest details YouTube gave you. Do not paste the key into a public script, screenshot, or forum post.
- From the directory containing the playlist and clips, start FFmpeg. Replace
YOUR_RTMPS_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEYwith the actual RTMPS destination format YouTube supplies for your broadcast:

-f flv "YOUR_RTMPS_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"-re reads the files at their natural playback pace, and -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. With -r 30, a 60-frame keyframe interval is two seconds. The CBR-related rate settings target 10 Mbps video; they cannot compensate for inadequate or unstable upload bandwidth. The command assumes your source audio can be encoded as stereo AAC. If your files do not meet those assumptions, adapt the filters, stream mapping, or encoding settings and test before using the stream for an audience.

- Start the command and check Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream-health warnings. YouTube recommends testing with representative sound and movement, then monitoring the stream.
- When testing is clean, run the process on a machine and network you can monitor. Decide in advance how you will detect a stopped process or connection and restart it. FFmpeg looping does not itself provide a complete failure-recovery or 24/7 uptime system.
For troubleshooting, first inspect FFmpeg’s console output and YouTube’s stream-health status. Common causes include an inaccessible file path, malformed list, incompatible streams, incorrect server URL or key, an encoder missing from the installed build, or upload bandwidth that cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Fix the specific issue, then test the full playlist and representative audio and motion again.
Set the audience and clear the content rights
YouTube requires creators to declare whether a live stream is Made for Kids. Preschool-directed stories may be intended for children, but the creator is responsible for setting the audience accurately; do not rely on automated classification to make the decision. Use the audience setting in Live Control Room and consult YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.

Confirm that you have permission to stream every story, illustration, recording, performance, and music track. The YouTube and FFmpeg setup guides do not establish that any particular story or recording is cleared for livestreaming. Stream only content you have rights to use; the copyright safety checklist can help you review common rights questions.
Plan separately for continuity and archiving
A live feed and a durable recording are separate needs. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. For a nominally 24/7 broadcast, do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve the whole program. YouTube recommends keeping a separate local recording as backup; plan storage and file rotation around your actual bitrate and retention needs. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

A local recording or archive workflow uses additional storage and may add disk, CPU, or encoding load. Test it separately so that a recording failure, full disk, or resource shortage does not go unnoticed while the live output continues.
