How to Create an Automated Podcast Episode Queue for YouTube Live in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To queue podcast episodes for YouTube Live, put the recordings in order in OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, then schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and use OBS to send the playlist to YouTube. The playlist controls what plays; YouTube scheduling creates the event. India does not have a separate queue setup in the cited guidance, so use your local time zone when scheduling and test the actual computer and internet connection you plan to use.

What you need before setting up the queue

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the intended channel’s eligibility before planning a scheduled broadcast: YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance.
  • A computer with OBS Studio and VLC installed. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and requires VLC; supported formats are listed in OBS’s media-source documentation.
  • Podcast episode files stored locally, in the order you want them played.
  • A reliable internet connection for the computer running OBS, plus access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

Confirm that you have permission to livestream every episode, including any music, clips, or other third-party material. Check the replay’s rights and visibility settings after the event too; a license for one use should not be assumed to cover every use.

Build the episode queue in OBS

  1. Put the episodes in a dedicated folder. Keeping the files together makes it easier to verify that OBS can find them and that they remain available throughout the broadcast.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream. Add the episode files to its playlist in the desired sequence. OBS documents playlist playback in its media-source guide.
  3. Choose whether the queue should repeat. Leave shuffle off for a predictable episode order. Set looping according to the show: OBS’s VLC Video source loops by default, so disable looping if you want the queue to stop after one pass.
  4. Check playback and audio locally. Play through the queue and verify that episodes appear in the intended order, video displays correctly, and audio is audible. OBS’s ordinary Media Source can play and loop a single local file; use VLC Video for a multi-episode playlist.
  5. Keep the source files available. Do not move or rename files after building the playlist unless you update the source paths and retest.

OBS’s documentation lists common media formats, but that does not guarantee every file or encoding will play correctly. Test the exact episode files on the broadcast computer before scheduling the show.

Connect OBS to YouTube and schedule the event

  1. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create a live event, or schedule one for later. YouTube’s encoder setup and scheduling instructions describe this workflow. Confirm the date, time, and time zone shown in Studio.
  2. Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. Use the stream settings shown for the YouTube event. The stream key is the credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder feed; keep it private. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance explains the key. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
  3. Start OBS early and check YouTube’s incoming preview. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Confirm that the correct event is selected and that the incoming picture and sound are right before going live. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
  4. Start the event using the Live Control Room flow. Scheduling makes an upcoming event that can be shared and may offer viewer reminders. At showtime, start the encoder and follow the event’s Live Control Room steps, checking the preview and go-live control.

For a recurring podcast, YouTube Studio scheduling is usually the straightforward choice. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes reusing one liveStream resource with multiple scheduled liveBroadcast resources when an encoder uses the same streaming settings. The API can manage broadcast resources, but it does not play episode files: OBS or another encoder must still send the media. Implementing the API also requires authorization and development work.

Monitor the stream and check the replay

An OBS playlist is not a guarantee of unattended operation. The cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not promise recovery from a computer crash, power loss, or a dropped connection. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video during the event and checking the local archive file as it grows. Keep someone available to intervene if playback or the connection fails.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you rely on automatic archiving, keep the broadcast below that threshold; the guidance does not promise the same archive behavior for longer streams. Afterward, check that the replay exists and set its rights and visibility appropriately using YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Common queue and livestream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS cannot play a playlist item VLC is not installed, the file format or encoding is unsupported, or the file path changed. Install VLC, confirm the episode still exists at the playlist path, and test that exact file in OBS before the event.
Episodes play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly The playlist order, shuffle, or looping setting is not configured as intended. Review the VLC Video playlist order, turn shuffle off, and set looping to match whether the show should stop after one pass.
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed The wrong event, stream URL, or key may be selected, or the stream key may have been reset. Compare OBS’s stream settings with the event in Live Control Room. If the key may be exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS.
The event is scheduled but viewers see no stream The encoder may not have started, or the event’s preview/go-live step may not be complete. Start OBS early, verify the incoming preview, select the correct scheduled event, then follow the Live Control Room flow.
The stream stops during the queue The computer, power, or connection may have failed; the basic playlist workflow does not promise automatic recovery. Check the computer and connection, restart the encoder if needed, and have a person monitor the event. Review YouTube’s monitoring tips.
