To run recorded chess games as a continuous YouTube live broadcast, play your recordings in a playlist through a streaming encoder such as OBS, then send that encoder’s output to a YouTube Live event. YouTube does not automatically turn ordinary uploads into a 24/7 live stream. A local setup means the computer and internet connection must stay available; a cloud service can handle playback instead.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Chess-game recordings you have the right to broadcast, plus any board visuals, commentary, music, or overlays used in them.
- A playlist or other ordered set of files, a playback-and-encoding method, and a stable internet connection.
- A plan for checking the broadcast and responding if the encoder, computer, network, or YouTube stream stops.
YouTube supports encoder-based livestreams, including for gaming and other video-intensive content. Its official documentation does not describe a one-click feature that loops prerecorded uploads into a live event.

Prepare the chess recordings and playlist
Check rights and presentation
Before broadcasting, verify that you may use each recording and every element inside it: board graphics, commentary, event footage, music, and overlays. Rights can depend on the material and jurisdiction. Do not assume that a chess game recording is automatically free to rebroadcast; the rights status of your particular recordings and accompanying material must be established separately.
Make the playlist coherent
Arrange the files in the order you want viewers to see them. Check that each file plays from beginning to end, has usable audio levels, and displays the board legibly at the intended stream size. If you want a continuous cycle, configure the playback source or playlist to repeat; an ordinary YouTube upload playlist is not itself a live encoder.

Set up a local 24/7 stream with OBS
OBS is open-source streaming software, and its official help portal links to streaming setup and encoding guidance. Menu labels can vary by OBS version, so use the current setup guide and YouTube’s current Live Control Room interface if a label differs.
- Install and configure OBS. Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard for a starting configuration, as OBS recommends for basic setup. Check that your computer can play the recording and encode the output smoothly before committing to a continuous broadcast.
- Add the chess video source. In a scene, add the appropriate media or playback source for your file. Add and arrange any board frame, logo, or commentary elements you have rights to use. Confirm that the video is visible and audio meters respond as expected.
- Build the playback cycle. Add the recordings in the desired order and enable looping in the playback arrangement you are using. Test transitions and the return from the final recording to the first. If you rely on a playlist feature or plugin, verify its behavior in a short test; YouTube itself is not performing the file loop.
- Create or open a YouTube Live event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an event. Choose the encoder-based streaming workflow and copy the stream key and server details shown for that event.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS’s streaming settings, select the YouTube service or enter the server and stream key provided by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS early enough to check the Live Control Room preview before the public event is underway. Confirm that the video and audio are correct and that the intended event is receiving the feed.
- Leave the playback and encoder running. For a local continuous broadcast, the computer must remain powered, OBS must keep running, and the internet connection must remain available. A dedicated streaming PC is optional, not a requirement; test a computer you already own before buying hardware. No specific CPU, GPU, memory, or bandwidth minimum for this exact workload is established here.
- Monitor and end deliberately. Check the player, audio, network, and stream health, and make sure the archive is growing and the stream can be viewed on mobile. When you intend to end the event, stop the encoder after the YouTube event ends, following YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Keep the broadcast monitored
A 24/7 target is not an uptime guarantee. The local setup can stop if the computer sleeps, reboots, loses power, OBS freezes, playback ends without looping, or the connection fails. Assign a person or an alerting process to check the encoder, network, player, audio, and YouTube stream health, and decide how the stream will be restarted after an interruption.

YouTube’s LiveStreams API exposes stream-health status that can help diagnose issues. It is a diagnostic aid, not a substitute for monitoring or a promise that a stream will recover automatically.

Local computer or cloud playlist service?
A local OBS setup gives you direct control over the playback and encoding process, but requires a computer and connection to stay available. A hosted playout service can avoid operating a dedicated local machine. One documented example is OneStream Live’s guide to continuous YouTube broadcasting from prerecorded videos. Confirm any provider’s current features, terms, pricing, and recovery behavior before relying on it; those details are not established here.

Do not buy a capture card merely to play files: a capture card is relevant when ingesting a separate physical video source, not as a requirement for file playback. Likewise, a dedicated PC is a convenience for keeping local playout separate, not a prerequisite. Compare options by whether a local computer must stay on, playlist controls, monitoring and recovery, output handling, cost and support, and the rights status of the media.

Troubleshoot common problems
