To create an Alexa routine, open the Alexa app and select More > Routines > Plus. Choose Add an event for the trigger, choose Add an action for what Alexa should do, configure any options shown, and select Save. You can combine several actions in one routine, such as turning on compatible lights and reading the weather forecast.

Alexa routines are shortcuts that group commands together. Creating the routine itself does not require smart-home hardware; compatible lights, plugs, thermostats, cameras, security systems, or other devices are needed only for actions that control them.

What an Alexa routine does

A routine connects a trigger to one or more Alexa actions. When the trigger occurs, Alexa performs the actions in sequence, so you do not have to issue each command separately. A trigger may be a spoken phrase, a schedule, a sound, presence information, an alarm, or another supported event. Actions can include smart-home controls, music, information, calls, skills, and some Fire TV or security functions.

Amazon says an account can contain up to 200 routines at a time. The exact triggers, actions, and settings displayed can vary by Alexa app version, account, region, device model, and the connected products linked to your account.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

What you need before creating one

  • The current Alexa mobile app, signed in to the Amazon account that owns your Alexa devices.
  • An Echo or another Alexa-enabled device if you want Alexa to hear a voice command or play audio.
  • Compatible connected devices only when the routine will control hardware. A routine that announces weather, starts music, or runs a skill can work without a smart-home device.
  • Devices linked in the Alexa app and assigned clear names, such as “hall light” or “bedroom lamp.”

For a lamp or other suitable plug-in appliance, an Alexa-compatible smart plug is an optional way to add on/off control. Verify the plug’s Alexa compatibility and the appliance’s permitted electrical load before connecting it. A compatible smart bulb is more appropriate when you need dimming. A thermostat is relevant for scheduled temperature changes.

How to create an Alexa routine

  1. Open the Alexa app. Use the app on your phone or tablet and sign in to the account that should own the routine.
  2. Open the routine list. Select More, then select Routines.
  3. Start a new routine. Select the Plus button.
  4. Add the trigger. Select Add an event. Choose the event type, then enter the phrase, time, device event, or other condition requested by the app.
  5. Add the first action. Select Add an action and choose what Alexa should do. Follow the additional settings for that action, such as selecting a light, choosing a brightness level, selecting a speaker, or entering a message.
  6. Add more actions if needed. Repeat Add an action for each step. For example, one routine can turn on a light, start a weather briefing, and play music.
  7. Review event-specific settings. Some triggers or actions expose extra choices, such as a time window, the device that should respond, a profile, or a condition. The app does not show identical options for every account or device.
  8. Save the routine. Select Save. Test it using the trigger you selected and check each connected device.

If an action is missing, that usually means the linked device, account, region, or current app configuration does not support it. Do not assume that an option shown in another household will appear on every Alexa setup.

Choose the right trigger

The trigger determines how predictable and private a routine is. A fixed schedule is usually easiest to test. Event-based triggers can be more useful for a responsive home but depend on sensors, device support, or presence settings.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Glacier White
Trigger type Best for Important considerations
Voice command On-demand scenes such as “Alexa, good morning” or “Alexa, leaving home” Use a short phrase that is easy to say and unlikely to be confused with another command. It requires a device that can hear you.
Time of day Lighting, wake-up information, reminders, and recurring schedules Confirm the time zone and recurrence settings shown by the app. A time trigger is more predictable than a presence or sound event.
Sound detection Responses to supported sounds when the relevant detection feature and device are available Availability depends on device and configuration. Background noise can affect when the event is recognized.
Presence Detection Actions that respond when someone arrives or leaves Requires compatible devices and configured presence information. It is dependent on location or sensor data rather than a fixed clock time.
Alarm Actions tied to an Alexa alarm Useful for wake-up sequences, but the routine depends on the alarm being present and active.
Voice ID or Visual ID personal presence Profile-specific responses on compatible devices Voice ID and Visual ID features have device and setup requirements. Visual ID personal-presence routines are not supported by every Echo model.

Amazon also allows routines to be assigned to the whole home or to an individual Alexa Profile. Use a household assignment for shared lighting; use a profile assignment when the response contains personal information or preferences.

Choose actions and order them deliberately

After selecting a trigger, choose Add an action. The available catalog depends on your account and linked devices. Amazon lists these types of actions:

Action category Examples What to check
Smart-home control Turn compatible devices on or off; adjust dimmable lights Choose the exact device or group and confirm that it is online. Dimming requires a compatible dimmable light.
Information Weather forecast, briefing, or traffic report Select the output device when the app asks. Information can be location- or profile-dependent.
Media Play music Review the service, content, volume, and playback device options displayed in your app.
Communication Make a call Review the selected contact and privacy settings carefully before saving.
Skills Start an Alexa skill The skill must be enabled and may expose its own account or permission requirements.
Fire TV Turn on compatible Fire TV devices Only compatible linked devices appear. This is an optional entertainment action, not a requirement for a home routine.
Security Arm a connected home-security system Amazon documents arming as a supported routine action; the leaving-home example cannot disarm the system through that routine.
Temperature Set a supported thermostat temperature or fan mode Temperature actions depend on compatible hardware. Amazon documents these controls for compatible smart-home devices with Echo Dot (5th Generation) and Echo Pop.

When several actions run together, place safety-critical steps first and entertainment steps later. For example, turn on a hallway light before starting music so the light is available immediately when the routine begins.

Useful Alexa routine examples

Good-morning routine

  1. Create a routine and choose a time trigger or a voice phrase such as “good morning.”
  2. Add an action for compatible bedroom or hallway lights.
  3. Add a weather forecast or briefing action.
  4. Optionally add music and choose the Echo device that should play it.
  5. Save and test the routine at a convenient time before relying on it every morning.

Amazon uses the combination of lights and weather information as an example of grouping actions in one routine. Keep the number of steps limited enough that a failure is easy to diagnose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on a lamp at a certain time

  1. Connect an Alexa-compatible smart plug to the lamp, or use a compatible smart bulb.
  2. In the Alexa app, open More > Routines > Plus.
  3. Under Add an event, choose the time-of-day option and set the start time and recurrence.
  4. Under Add an action, choose smart-home control, select the plug or light, and set it to On. For a dimmable bulb, choose the desired brightness if that option appears.
  5. Save the routine and confirm that the device name and time are correct.

The plug or bulb must remain powered and connected. A routine can send the command, but it cannot restore a device that has been switched off at a wall outlet, lost power, or lost network access.

Leaving-home security routine

  1. Create a routine with a voice phrase or another supported trigger you can use when leaving.
  2. Add the connected security system action and select its armed mode.
  3. Review the selected system and save.
  4. Test the routine while you are still home and verify the system’s status in its own app or control panel.

Amazon says this type of routine can arm a connected security system but cannot disarm it. Do not use a routine as the only safeguard for a safety-critical security decision; verify the system’s state after it runs.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Deep Sea Blue

Temperature schedule

  1. Link a compatible thermostat to Alexa.
  2. Create a routine and choose a schedule or another supported trigger.
  3. Add the thermostat action.
  4. Select the supported control, such as a target temperature or fan mode, if offered.
  5. Save, then verify the thermostat’s reported state.

Amazon specifically documents temperature-based routine actions for compatible smart-home devices with Echo Dot (5th Generation) and Echo Pop. The exact controls shown depend on the thermostat and account configuration.

Motion-triggered patio light

Amazon describes Frustration-Free Automation creating a routine that pairs motion detection from a compatible outdoor camera with a patio light. If your setup supports this feature, review the generated routine rather than assuming its trigger, light, duration, or privacy behavior is ideal. You can edit or deactivate it from the routine list.

Optional hardware: what to buy and what to verify

Hardware category Routine use Checks before purchase or installation
Alexa-compatible smart plug Switch a suitable lamp or appliance on and off Alexa compatibility, Wi-Fi or hub requirements, maximum electrical load, and whether the appliance is approved for unattended switching.
Compatible smart light or dimmable bulb Turn lights on or off and, when supported, change brightness Correct socket, dimming support, network requirements, and whether a physical wall switch can remain on.
Compatible thermostat Set temperature or fan mode on a schedule Supported Alexa controls, installation requirements, HVAC compatibility, and whether the thermostat remains connected.
Compatible camera or presence device Trigger routines from motion or presence events Supported event type, account permissions, placement, detection range, and privacy settings.

These categories are optional. You can create and save routines that only play audio, provide information, or invoke skills without buying a smart plug, bulb, thermostat, or camera.

Find and manage routines Alexa creates automatically

Alexa may create a routine while you set up a compatible smart-home device through Frustration-Free Automation. Amazon says the app sends a notification when this happens, and generated routines are labeled.

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select More.
  3. Select Routines.
  4. Open Your Routines and locate the generated routine.
  5. View its trigger and actions. Edit it to change behavior, deactivate it to pause it, or delete it if you do not want the automation.

Review automatically generated routines soon after device setup. An unexpected motion or presence trigger can be inconvenient, and an action that switches a device should match your household’s schedule and safety requirements.

Troubleshoot a routine that does not run

The routine never starts

  • Open the routine and confirm that it is saved and active rather than deactivated.
  • Check the trigger type and its exact phrase, time, recurrence, or event setting.
  • For voice triggers, say the phrase exactly as configured and speak to an Alexa device signed in to the correct account.
  • For presence, sound, alarm, Voice ID, or Visual ID triggers, verify that the necessary compatible device and feature are configured.
  • Check that the Alexa app and the relevant device are using the account and profile you assigned.

The routine starts but a device does not respond

  • Confirm that the device appears online in the Alexa app and in the manufacturer’s control app if one is required.
  • Check that the routine targets the intended device, group, or room and that names are not duplicated.
  • For a plug, verify that the wall outlet is powered and that the appliance is within the plug’s electrical rating.
  • For a bulb, ensure the physical switch has not cut power and that the bulb supports the requested on/off or dimming action.
  • For a thermostat, check that the requested control is supported by that model and that the thermostat is connected.

Only some actions complete

  • Open the routine and test each action separately by creating a temporary voice routine or using the device’s normal Alexa command.
  • Remove or repair the failing action, then save the routine again.
  • Keep safety-critical controls separate from optional music or information actions so one unavailable service does not obscure the important step.
  • Look for additional settings revealed when you select the event or action; the app may require a specific output device, profile, or condition.

Privacy, profiles, and safety decisions

Use a household routine for shared functions such as hallway lighting. Assign a routine to an individual Alexa Profile when it delivers personal briefings, calls, or other information that should not be played for everyone. Voice ID and Visual ID features can personalize behavior, but they require compatible devices and configured recognition; Visual ID personal-presence routines are not universal across Echo hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before automating a lock, security system, heater, cooking appliance, or other high-consequence device, check exactly what the action does and whether the device exposes a confirmation or status check. Amazon documents arming a connected security system through a routine but not disarming it. For electrical products, follow the product’s load and unattended-use instructions rather than treating an Alexa command as a substitute for those limits.

Limits and the developer feature that is different

The consumer routine feature is managed in the Alexa app and has an Amazon-published limit of up to 200 routines per account. Specific options are not guaranteed across all app versions, regions, Echo models, or connected devices.

Do not confuse these household routines with the Alexa Routines Kit for skill developers. Amazon’s developer material states that the Kit was scheduled to be discontinued effective May 13, 2026. That developer change does not remove the ordinary consumer workflow described above.

A practical design checklist

  • Give each device a unique, natural name before building routines.
  • Use a fixed time when you need dependable scheduling; use presence, sound, or identity triggers when their device and privacy requirements fit the situation.
  • Start with one trigger and one action, test it, and add steps incrementally.
  • Place lights or safety-related controls before music and other optional actions.
  • Review profile, output-device, recurrence, and condition settings that appear after selecting an event or action.
  • Keep the physical power and network requirements of every connected device in mind.
  • Review automatically generated routines under More > Routines > Your Routines.
  • Delete or deactivate routines you no longer use so the 200-routine account limit does not become a maintenance problem.
