How to Create a YouTube Sermon Playlist from Files on a Church NAS

To stream sermon recordings stored on a church NAS, connect a computer to the church network, add the NAS files to an OBS Studio VLC Video playlist, and send OBS’s output to a YouTube Live stream. YouTube does not turn a NAS folder into a playlist by itself: OBS assembles and plays the files, while YouTube receives the encoder feed.

What you need before setting up the playlist

  • A computer that can access the church NAS and can stay on for the full stream.
  • OBS Studio, plus VLC installed in an architecture compatible with OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source will not appear unless VLC is installed; for example, use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  • The sermon recordings in a supported format that the installed software and codecs can play. Verify your specific files rather than assuming they will work.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, and a reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream settings.

Keep the NAS on the church network and access it through the operating system’s normal share-mounting or drive-mapping method. Do not expose the share to the public internet just to let the streaming computer reach it. The exact steps for mounting and authenticating to the share depend on the NAS vendor, firmware, and computer operating system.

Build the sermon playlist in OBS

  1. Connect to the church network and open the NAS share. Mount or map the shared folder using your operating system’s usual network-storage workflow. Confirm that the streaming computer can open the recordings from that location.
  2. Add a VLC Video source to the OBS scene. In the scene where the sermon video should appear, add a VLC Video source. If that option is missing, install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS, then reopen OBS.
  3. Add the files in service order. In the source’s playlist controls, add each recording from the accessible NAS path and arrange the list in the order it should play. A single OBS Media Source is suitable for an individual file; use VLC Video when you need a multi-file playlist.
  4. Choose playlist behavior. Leave shuffle off when the service needs a fixed sequence. Enable looping only if the recordings should restart after the last item; otherwise, let the playlist end. Confirm the intended behavior during a test rather than relying on assumptions about how a particular file will play.
  5. Check playback in OBS. Play the playlist and verify that each file loads, appears correctly, has audible sound, and advances in the expected order. The computer must retain access to the files throughout playback, so test from the actual NAS path rather than a temporary local copy.

OBS’s scene-and-source workflow lets you add media to the scene that will be sent to YouTube. For source setup, see the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide and Sources Guide.

Create a YouTube Live stream and connect OBS

  1. Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave initial setup until just before the service.
  2. Set the stream details and privacy. Choose the appropriate title, description, schedule, and privacy setting in Studio. Check that the scheduled event and the stream you configure in OBS refer to the same broadcast.
  3. Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. In OBS, open the streaming settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and key. The key is a credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder’s feed; treat it like a password and do not share it publicly.
  4. Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Start streaming from OBS early enough to see the feed in Live Control Room. Confirm the video and audio are present, and that the sermon playlist is playing as planned.
  5. Go live from Live Control Room when ready. For a scheduled event, use YouTube Studio’s Go live control after the preview is ready. Follow the controls shown in Studio to end the broadcast and stop the encoder.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Test the NAS, playlist, and network before the service

Run a test on the computer, network, OBS scene, and YouTube stream you plan to use on service day. This can catch a NAS permission problem, an unsupported file, an unexpected playlist setting, or a weak network path while there is still time to fix it.

  • Verify the NAS share is accessible and the account used by the streaming computer has the required file access.
  • Play every recording, checking picture, sound, order, and transitions between files.
  • Check that the YouTube preview receives both audio and video and that the stream health indicator does not show a problem.
  • Test upload capacity against the settings you intend to use. YouTube recommends testing the network and monitoring stream health; it does not prescribe one connection type for every setup.
  • Consider wired Ethernet if it suits the church’s network and is more reliable at the computer’s location. It is an option, not a universal requirement.

See YouTube Help’s Streaming tips for network preparation, testing, and stream health guidance.

Common problems and fixes

What you see Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source list. VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC that matches the OBS architecture, such as 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS, then reopen OBS.
A playlist item will not play or has no sound. The file format, codec, file access, or playback behavior may not work with the installed software. Open the exact file on the streaming computer, confirm the NAS path is reachable, and test the file in the OBS playlist before broadcast.
A file is missing after the computer starts streaming. The computer may have lost access to the NAS share or its authentication. Check the mounted or mapped share and permissions on the streaming computer. Keep the NAS path accessible throughout playback.
The playlist plays in the wrong order or repeats unexpectedly. Files may be arranged incorrectly, shuffle may be enabled, or looping may not match the service plan. Review the VLC Video playlist order and its shuffle and loop controls, then play through the sequence in a test.
YouTube does not show the OBS feed. The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the encoder has not connected successfully. Compare OBS’s streaming settings with the URL and key in Live Control Room, then start the encoder and check the preview again.
The stream health is poor or unstable. The network path may not reliably support the selected stream settings. Test upload capacity and stream health on the actual connection; consider a more reliable connection at the computer’s location.

If the stream key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the old key in OBS. YouTube documents stream-key management in Manage live stream settings.

Check broadcast rights for every recording

Having a sermon file on the church NAS does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Confirm that the church has the rights needed for each recording and for any music, slides, or other included material before streaming. The OBS and YouTube setup steps do not resolve those rights questions.
