Choose how the station will run
A YouTube radio station is a format, not a separate YouTube account type. The core workflow is a live video stream, even if the program is primarily audio. Decide whether you will host live, schedule separate broadcasts, or play prerecorded material continuously.

Check YouTube Live eligibility
Before planning a launch, confirm that the channel can livestream. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Rules and availability can change, so check YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance for the current requirements.

Create the stream and connect an encoder
- Choose the program source. Decide whether the feed will be live-hosted, assembled in encoder software, or played from prerecorded material. Hardware encoding is optional; YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows.
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live. Create a stream, or open Manage to schedule one. Scheduling can give viewers a shareable upcoming stream and reminders.
- Set stream details. Enter the title, description, visibility and other applicable settings. Confirm privacy and monetization choices. Reuse an existing stream configuration only after checking its metadata and key settings.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key as a credential; reset it if it is exposed or compromised.
- Build the feed. Add the audio and video sources. A radio-style show can use a still or looping visual, but make sure you have the rights for every element in the live program and any archive.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the incoming picture and sound in Live Control Room. Check that the correct stream is connected and that the audio is audible and the video looks as intended.
- Go live and verify access. Start the broadcast in YouTube Studio when the preview is ready. Check the channel or watch page, including from a phone, to confirm viewers can open it.

Plan the program, rights and archives
Clear the music and other media
YouTube’s livestream terms place rights responsibility on the provider, including music licensing rights. They state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Confirm with the relevant rights holders or licensors that permissions cover your territories, the livestream, and any archived replay. Owning a recording, or seeing it described as royalty-free, does not by itself establish that it is cleared for your planned uses.

YouTube may terminate a stream for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes, and an archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after the live event. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and its guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Choose session lengths with archiving in mind
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If an archive matters, plan shorter sessions or arrange a separate recording workflow. Keep a local recording backup where practical and verify that it is actually being written; do not assume that one very long live session will produce a replay. Set an operating and recovery plan
A continuous channel needs more than a successful first start. Decide who or what will notice a lost signal, who can restart the encoder, and what to do if the connection or power fails. Test the preview, watch-page access and local recording before launch, then monitor the stream during operation. YouTube’s event tips offer setup checks, but do not promise a 24/7 uptime design.

Fix common launch problems
- You cannot start a live stream: check channel verification, the minimum-age rule, and whether the channel has had a live restriction in the prior 90 days. Confirm the current eligibility requirements in YouTube’s setup guidance.
- Live Control Room shows no incoming signal: confirm that the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key, and that it is actively sending. If the key may be compromised, reset it and update the encoder.
- The preview is wrong or silent: check the selected audio and video sources in the encoder, then wait for the preview and verify the feed before going live.
- The stream is live but viewers cannot open it: check the stream’s visibility and test the watch page from the channel and a mobile device.
- The archive is missing: a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions when YouTube’s automatic archive matters, and verify any separate recording backup.
- Music triggers a claim or the stream stops: review permissions for the exact territory and live and archived uses. YouTube can terminate streams for copyright issues, and Content ID claims can affect an archive after the broadcast.
- The stream drops unexpectedly: check the source computer or encoder, power and internet connection, and have a restart procedure. For a cloud-hosted prerecorded stream, StreamNeo includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
