You can turn prerecorded menu and food-promo clips into a continuous YouTube Live broadcast by sending them through a software or hardware encoder. First enable live streaming on an eligible YouTube channel, create a live event in YouTube Studio, configure the encoder to play and repeat your video, then test the full feed and network before going public. The loop control depends on the encoder you choose; verify its current documentation rather than assuming YouTube Studio itself repeats a video.
What this setup does—and what it does not do
This method sends a prerecorded video through an encoder as the content of a live broadcast. It is different from uploading a finished video or playing a YouTube playlist: the encoder supplies a live feed to the event you create in YouTube Studio. Your selected encoder must be able to play the media and repeat it for the duration you want.

A continuous live presentation is useful when you want menu items, food footage, opening hours, or a promotion visible in one ongoing broadcast. It does not by itself establish that a live stream is better for discovery or audience reach; choose it to meet a real publishing need, and check YouTube’s current policies and interface for your channel.

Confirm live-stream eligibility
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Enable live streaming ahead of the promotion. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Have the final video file, a stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity, and an encoder that supports prerecorded-media playback and looping.
Choose a software or hardware encoder
YouTube supports both streaming software on a computer and standalone hardware encoders. A software encoder is a practical route if you already have a computer available; hardware may suit an unattended scheduled playout workflow, but the exact capabilities vary by device. YouTube’s documentation mentions AJA PlayToStream as a hardware capability for scheduling prerecorded media; that is not a recommendation of a particular model for every restaurant. Confirm that any encoder you consider can repeat your media, use a YouTube-compatible protocol and codec, and operate for the intended duration. No particular device or purchase is required by YouTube.

Create the live event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. In the live control workflow, choose an encoder-based stream rather than a webcam flow. Follow YouTube Studio’s current prompts for the title, visibility, and schedule.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the connection details. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a screen capture, share it publicly, or leave it exposed in a public document. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Load the prerecorded menu or promotional video in the encoder. Configure the encoder’s media-playback source to use the finished file, then enable that product’s repeat, loop, or playlist-repeat control. The exact label and behavior are encoder- and version-specific. YouTube’s general encoder pages do not document the current click-by-click loop controls for every software product, so check the encoder maker’s current documentation and test it before scheduling.
- Set the encoder’s output protocol and settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for general streaming. Use a supported codec and the bitrate and keyframe guidance below, adjusting to the encoder’s available controls.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the correct event receives the feed before setting the event public or promoting its link.
Set resolution, bitrate, codecs, and keyframes
Pick an output your connection can sustain continuously, not just a setting that looks good in a short test. YouTube’s current Help recommendations accessed in 2026 list these H.264 video bitrates for the specified frame rates:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Upload capacity to plan for with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | At least 16.8 Mbps available upload capacity |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | At least 9.6 Mbps available upload capacity |
The headroom figures are arithmetic using YouTube’s recommendation to keep about 20% available beyond the stream bitrate; they are planning targets, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Run a speed test on the same connection and, where possible, device and network path you will use for the broadcast. YouTube says available upload bitrate must exceed the stream bitrate. If capacity varies or other devices share the connection, reduce output quality or improve the connection rather than relying on the highest speed-test result.

- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use it unless your encoder or a specific workflow requires another supported option.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS workflows. Choose a codec supported by both your encoder and the YouTube ingest workflow you select.
- Audio codec: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Listen to the actual outgoing audio during preflight, even if the video is primarily a visual menu.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for the cited encoder settings.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
When HLS is relevant
HLS is an alternative ingestion protocol for supported workflows; YouTube lists OBS among encoders with HLS output. Do not choose it by default if RTMPS meets your needs. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because the stream is sent in segments. Its HLS setup guidance specifies one-to-four-second segment duration, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. Use HLS only when the encoder and workflow call for it, and verify every requirement in YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

Make the video legible and useful when viewed as a live feed: show item names and prices long enough to read, avoid tiny text, and ensure promotional claims, availability, and dates are accurate. Keep the file’s audio intentional—either include suitable audio or make the stream silent—and review it with the encoder’s actual playback path. The broadcast will repeat whatever content you provide, so check the beginning and end for abrupt transitions, stale offers, or information that should not remain on screen.

Use material you have the rights to broadcast, including music, photography, video, and branding. YouTube’s live-streaming rules and copyright processes still apply to prerecorded content sent as a live feed. Do not assume that owning a copy of a song or clip grants permission to stream it; use licensed or original assets and check YouTube’s current policies for your situation.
Test the entire broadcast before launch
- Schedule setup early. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Run a representative test. Use the actual video, audio, resolution, bitrate, encoder, and network that you intend to use. A static menu slide alone will not reveal problems in the full promotional sequence.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview. Verify the right event, picture, text legibility, audio, and that the encoder’s loop returns to the start as intended.
- Check stream health and messages. Review YouTube’s status indicators and warnings while the encoder runs. A successful connection alone does not confirm that viewers will receive clean audio and video.
- Check playback on a viewer device. Open the event as a viewer where possible and confirm the displayed stream, sound, and public/private visibility are correct.
- Keep monitoring during the promotion. Watch the Live Control Room for health changes or messages, and check that the loop and audio remain correct.
Run and end the stream deliberately
Keep the encoder and its media source running for the planned broadcast. If the computer or hardware encoder stops, the feed stops; a software-encoder setup therefore depends on the computer, power, and network remaining available. When the promotion is over, stop the broadcast deliberately using the encoder and YouTube’s live controls. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for a longer stream.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Live activation or event setup is unavailable | The channel is not eligible, has a recent live restriction, or first-time activation is still processing. | Verify the channel and restriction status in YouTube Studio, enable live streaming early, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| Encoder connects but the event preview is blank or wrong | Wrong event, stream URL/key, source, or media playback configuration. | Match the encoder’s URL and key to the intended event; verify the selected file is playing and inspect the preview. Replace an exposed stream key. |
| Video stutters, drops frames, or stream health degrades | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the configured bitrate is too high for the connection. | Run a speed test, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom, reduce bitrate or resolution, and limit competing network traffic. |
| The video plays once and stops | The encoder’s repeat setting is off or applies to a different media source. | Check the current encoder documentation and confirm its loop/repeat control is enabled for the loaded file; test a complete cycle before going public. |
| Audio is missing, distorted, or unexpected | Incorrect source routing, codec, levels, or an overlooked soundtrack in the file. | Listen in the encoder preview and viewer playback, confirm AAC or MP3 output, and adjust the source and levels before launch. |
| HLS ingest fails or has more latency than expected | Encoder output does not meet HLS segment or transport requirements, or HLS latency is unsuitable. | Check segment duration, TS format, rolling playlist limit, HTTPS POST/PUT, and byte-range behavior against YouTube’s HLS instructions; use RTMPS if HLS is not needed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded menu or promo to stay live on YouTube without leaving a restaurant computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. The setup is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home or at the restaurant, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video on YouTube, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
