Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Yes, you can try a Ventoy USB for a Steam Deck recovery image, but it is not a guaranteed method. Ventoy 1.1.18, announced on October 9, 2026, adds experimental support for SteamOS recovery images. Older Ventoy issue reports describe black screens and hangs, so compatibility can still depend on the recovery-image generation, USB media and Deck configuration.
This guide shows the Ventoy workflow, how to obtain the current SteamOS recovery image, what to do when Ventoy cannot boot it, and how Secure Boot changes the process. If you need Valve’s documented path rather than a multiboot experiment, write the recovery image directly to the USB drive with bzcat and dd.

In other words, the answer to “Can I put the SteamOS recovery image on a Ventoy USB?” is “try it with Ventoy 1.1.18 or later, but keep a separate direct-written USB plan.”

Prepare the following:
- A USB flash drive that you are willing to erase. Installing Ventoy formats the selected drive and removes its existing contents.
- A computer running Windows or Linux for the Ventoy installation and file copy.
- The current SteamOS recovery image obtained through Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions.
- A way to connect the USB drive to the Steam Deck. USB-C, USB-A and hub or adapter requirements depend on the drive and the Deck setup; no particular connector is required by the documented procedure.
- A backup of any files currently on the USB drive.
Do not choose a drive by its name alone. Check its size, model and currently mounted partitions before installing Ventoy or running a raw-device command. A mistake at either stage can erase a different disk.

How the two recovery methods differ
Ventoy installs a bootable environment once, then leaves a large data partition where you copy image files. You can keep more than one boot image on that partition and select one from Ventoy’s menu. That is useful when the same USB drive is also a general rescue disk.
Valve’s documented recovery procedure takes a different approach: it writes one compressed SteamOS recovery image directly to the USB device. The write is destructive, but it is the recovery path Valve documents for Steam Deck repair and re-imaging.
| Decision point | Ventoy 1.1.18 or later | Valve direct write |
|---|---|---|
| How the image is stored | The recovery image remains a file on Ventoy’s main data partition. | The recovery image is written directly to the USB device with dd. |
| Multiboot flexibility | Multiple supported image files can be kept in folders and selected at startup. | The media is prepared for the image that was written; replacing it requires another write. |
| Updating or replacing images | Delete or copy image files on the data partition without reinstalling Ventoy. | Run the write process again with the desired recovery image. |
| SteamOS compatibility | Experimental support was announced for Ventoy 1.1.18 on October 9, 2026. | This is Valve’s documented recovery workflow. |
| Risk to existing USB data | Installing Ventoy erases the selected drive; copying later images does not require reformatting. | The raw write replaces data on the selected USB device. |
| Best use | A flexible rescue drive when you accept compatibility uncertainty. | The fallback when Ventoy does not start the SteamOS recovery environment. |
Do not treat Ventoy’s convenience as evidence that it is the more reliable recovery choice. Its SteamOS support is explicitly experimental, while Valve’s instructions describe the direct-write method.
Step 1: Back up and identify the USB drive
Copy anything you need from the USB drive to another location. Ventoy’s own installation documentation warns: “Attention that the USB drive will be formatted and all the data will be lost after install.”
Disconnect other removable drives if possible. On Windows, open Disk Management or File Explorer and note the removable drive’s capacity and label. On Linux, use a disk utility or a command such as lsblk to distinguish the whole USB disk from your internal storage. Do not proceed until the device identity is unambiguous.
Ventoy is installed against the whole disk, not an individual partition. A Linux device such as /dev/sdX represents the disk in the examples below; a name such as /dev/sdX1 represents a partition and is not the target for Ventoy installation.
Step 2: Install Ventoy on Windows
- Download the official Ventoy package and extract it on Windows.
- Open the extracted folder and run
Ventoy2Disk. - In the device selector, choose the USB drive you identified. Recheck the model and capacity before continuing.
- Choose Install. Confirm the warnings only after verifying that the selected device contains no needed data.
- Wait for Ventoy to finish formatting and partitioning the drive. Do not unplug it while the operation is in progress.
Ventoy normally creates two partitions. The first, larger partition is the data partition visible for copying image files. The small second partition is used by Ventoy internally and should not be used as the location for the recovery image.

Step 3: Install Ventoy on Linux
- Extract the official Ventoy Linux package.
- Open a terminal in the extracted directory.
- Identify the whole USB device, for example
/dev/sdX, using a disk utility orlsblk. Substitute the real device name in the command; do not copy the literalX. - Run Ventoy’s supplied installation script as root against the whole disk. The target must look like
/dev/sdX, not/dev/sdX1. - Confirm the destructive prompt only after checking the device one more time.
The exact script filename can vary with the Ventoy package. Use the script included with the version you downloaded rather than inventing a different command. The important distinction is the target: Ventoy needs the disk device, and selecting the wrong disk can destroy its partition table and data.

Step 4: Copy the SteamOS recovery image to Ventoy
After installation, mount Ventoy’s first, main data partition. Ventoy’s documentation says supported image files can be placed in directories and discovered recursively, so you can keep them in the root of that partition or in a folder such as SteamOS.
- Open Valve’s current SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions.
- Follow the recovery-image link provided there instead of relying on an old filename copied from a forum post.
- Check the versioned filename and download the recovery image to your computer.
- Copy the downloaded image file to Ventoy’s main data partition. Keep the file in its original format unless Valve’s current instructions say otherwise.
- Safely eject the drive after the copy completes.
Valve’s hosted recovery directory contains multiple recovery and repair generations, including files dated in 2026 as well as older archives. Names and versions change, so a filename such as steamdeck-recovery-4.img.bz2 should be treated as an example from the documented command, not as a promise that it is the current image for every repair.
Do not extract a compressed image merely because its name ends in .bz2. Ventoy’s menu behavior depends on the image format it supports, and Valve’s direct-write example deliberately streams the compressed file through bzcat. Use the current Steam Support instructions if the downloaded file or format differs.

- Shut down the Steam Deck completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Connect the Ventoy USB drive directly or through a compatible adapter or hub.
- Open the Deck’s boot-device menu using the hardware key sequence appropriate to the current Steam Deck firmware. If the USB device does not appear, power off, reconnect it and try again; firmware menus can differ by device revision.
- Select the USB device and wait for the Ventoy menu.
- Choose the SteamOS recovery image you copied. If you placed several images in folders, navigate to the correct file and verify its version before launching it.
- Allow the recovery environment time to load. Do not assume a black screen has completed successfully; if it remains stuck, power down and use the troubleshooting path below.
Ventoy 1.1.18 is the minimum release covered by the experimental SteamOS recovery-image announcement dated October 9, 2026. Check Ventoy’s version before attempting this workflow. Earlier issue reports recorded black-screen hangs and failed boots with Steam Deck recovery images on older releases. Those reports establish historical compatibility problems, not a guarantee that every current image will fail or succeed on 1.1.18.
What to do if Ventoy shows a black screen or hangs
A failure after selecting the image can come from the experimental compatibility layer, the specific recovery-image generation, the USB media or the Deck’s firmware configuration. Work through these checks without repeatedly rewriting the same drive:
- Confirm that Ventoy is 1.1.18 or newer. Updating Ventoy may require reinstalling it, which again erases the selected drive, so back up files first.
- Confirm that you copied the complete, current image file and that the filename matches the version Valve currently lists.
- Try the USB connection again with the Deck fully powered off. A different port, adapter or hub can change whether firmware detects the media, but no particular connector is universally required.
- Remove additional image files temporarily so that you select only the intended recovery image.
- If the image still does not boot, stop treating Ventoy as the recovery method and use Valve’s direct-write workflow.
Do not interpret a successful Ventoy menu load as proof that SteamOS recovery itself will start. Ventoy can enumerate a file while the recovery environment still fails during its own boot process.
Valve’s direct-write fallback
Valve’s documented Linux command streams a compressed recovery image into the USB device:
bzcat steamdeck-recovery-4.img.bz2 | sudo dd if=/dev/stdin of=/dev/sdX oflag=sync status=progress bs=128M
Replace both the filename and /dev/sdX with the current values for your situation. Valve’s recovery directory changes over time, and its current Steam Support page may point to a newer recovery image than the example shown above.

Why this command is dangerous
The of= argument is the output device. It must be the whole USB disk, not a partition and not your computer’s internal drive. The command writes raw bytes over the target media’s existing partitioning. Selecting the wrong device can destroy the operating system, personal files and recovery partitions on that device.
Safer execution sequence
- Download the recovery image specified by Valve’s current SteamOS Installation and Repair page.
- Open a terminal in the directory containing the downloaded file.
- Run
lsblkor a graphical disk utility and identify the USB disk by its size and model. - Unmount any mounted partitions on that USB disk, while leaving the disk itself connected.
- Substitute the exact image filename and whole-device path in the command.
- Read the command from left to right and verify the
of=path immediately before pressing Enter. - Enter your administrator password if prompted and wait for
status=progressto finish. - Allow the command to return to the shell, then safely eject the USB drive.
The oflag=sync option asks the write to use synchronized output, and status=progress displays progress while bs=128M sets the transfer block size shown in Valve’s instructions. These options do not make an incorrectly selected device safe.
Windows users
The quoted command is a Linux shell command. If your preparation computer runs Windows, follow Valve’s current Steam Support instructions for the Windows imaging path if one is provided there, or use a Linux environment that can safely identify and write the USB device. Do not paste a Linux device path into a Windows utility and assume the result is equivalent.
Secure Boot: separate Ventoy and Steam Deck considerations
Ventoy has its own install-time Secure Boot option. Its Secure Boot documentation explains that some computers may require the firmware setting Allow Microsoft 3rd Party UEFI CA so the Ventoy loader can be accepted.
If Ventoy’s Secure Boot route fails, Ventoy’s stated fallback is to turn off Ventoy’s Secure Boot option and disable Secure Boot in the computer’s firmware. Firmware labels differ, so look for a Secure Boot setting in the UEFI setup rather than assuming a particular menu name.
Valve’s note is narrower: most non-Steam Deck devices need Secure Boot disabled when re-imaging from USB. That statement should not be expanded into a claim that every Steam Deck must have Secure Boot disabled. Treat the Deck and the computer used to create the media as separate systems, and change firmware settings only when the boot behavior requires it.
Keeping the Ventoy drive useful after recovery
If Ventoy successfully boots the recovery environment, you can keep the installation for other supported rescue images. Store images in clearly named folders and retain the version in each filename. Because Ventoy searches directories recursively, a folder structure can reduce menu clutter without changing the boot files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen replacing an image, copy the new file first, verify that it is complete, then remove the older file only after you are certain it is no longer needed. This file-based update process is the main practical advantage over a direct-written recovery disk: you do not have to reformat the Ventoy drive simply to swap one image for another.

Installing a newer Ventoy release is different from copying a new image. Reinstallation or an update operation can affect the drive’s partitions and may present a format warning. Back up the data partition and reread the target-device selection before accepting any operation.

Installing Ventoy on a partition
Symptom: The Linux command targets /dev/sdX1 or another partition path.
Fix: Stop and identify the whole disk, such as /dev/sdX. Ventoy’s installation step is for the disk device.
Choosing the wrong disk
Symptom: The installer or dd command is about to operate on an internal drive.
Fix: Cancel before confirming. Compare model, capacity and mount points, disconnect unrelated drives, and identify the USB again.
Using an old recovery filename
Symptom: A guide tells you to download a specific image, but Valve’s current directory lists newer recovery files.
Fix: Start from Valve’s current SteamOS Installation and Repair page and use the version it currently specifies. Keep the filename in the command synchronized with the file you actually downloaded.
Expecting every Deck to boot every Ventoy image
Symptom: Ventoy opens, but the recovery image hangs or displays a black screen.

Fix: Confirm Ventoy 1.1.18 or newer, retry once with a verified current image, then switch to the direct-write method. Experimental support does not establish universal compatibility.
Changing Secure Boot on the wrong machine
Symptom: You disable or enable firmware security on the preparation computer but the Deck still does not boot.
Fix: Separate the two firmware contexts. Ventoy’s Secure Boot notes concern the computer firmware that starts Ventoy; Valve’s note concerns re-imaging on most non-Steam Deck devices. Change only the setting relevant to the device showing the boot failure.

Which method should you choose?
Choose Ventoy first when flexibility matters
Use Ventoy when you want one USB drive to carry several rescue images, expect to replace images as versions change, and accept that SteamOS recovery support is experimental. Its normal workflow is install once, then copy image files to the first data partition.
Choose direct writing when recovery certainty matters more
Use Valve’s direct-write procedure when Ventoy hangs, when a repair must follow Valve’s documented path, or when you do not need a multiboot drive. It sacrifices the convenience of keeping several image files, but it is the procedure Valve publishes for writing SteamOS recovery media.
Keep a second USB if the Deck is needed urgently
A Ventoy attempt and a direct-written recovery disk are different preparations. If the Deck is unusable and you have access to two suitable USB drives, keeping one as a Ventoy multiboot drive and one prepared with Valve’s direct method avoids having to reformat the first drive while troubleshooting.
Final checklist before booting
- You backed up the USB drive and accepted that Ventoy installation erases it.
- You selected the removable drive by model and capacity, not just by a familiar label.
- Ventoy is version 1.1.18 or newer for the experimental SteamOS support path.
- You downloaded the recovery image currently specified by Valve, rather than assuming an old filename remains current.
- You copied the image to Ventoy’s first data partition, not the small secondary partition.
- You know how to open the Deck’s boot-device menu and have a compatible connection for the USB drive.
- You understand that a black screen or hang is a compatibility failure to troubleshoot, not proof that recovery is still running.
- You have the direct-write command available and can identify the whole USB device safely if Ventoy fails.
- You have considered Secure Boot separately on the preparation computer and on any non-Steam Deck device involved in re-imaging.
Bottom line
Ventoy 1.1.18 makes a Steam Deck recovery USB worth trying, especially when you want a reusable multiboot drive. Its SteamOS support remains experimental, however. For a recovery operation where boot reliability matters more than multiboot convenience, use Valve’s current image and direct-write instructions, verify the target device twice, and treat the raw write as destructive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Ventoy for the Steam Deck recovery image?
You can try it with Ventoy 1.1.18 or later, which has experimental SteamOS recovery-image support. Keep Valve’s direct-write method as a fallback because older versions had documented black-screen and boot-hang problems.
How do I boot a Steam Deck recovery USB made with Ventoy?
Install Ventoy, copy the current Valve recovery image to its main data partition, connect the drive to the powered-off Deck, open the boot-device menu, select the USB drive and choose the image from Ventoy’s menu.
What should I do if the Ventoy recovery image will not boot?
Verify the Ventoy version and current image file once, then use Valve’s direct-write workflow with bzcat and dd. Confirm the output path is the whole USB disk because the command overwrites the selected device.
