To create a vacation-rental website, first decide whether it will be a brochure that sends guests to another listing or a direct-booking channel that displays live availability, calculates the full price, takes payment and confirms reservations. That decision determines your platform, calendar connections, payment setup and testing.
1. Choose the website’s job
Brochure website
A brochure site presents photos, amenities, location, policies and contact details, then links guests to Airbnb, Vrbo, a property-management system or an inquiry form. You do not need to build payment processing or a live reservation database, but every external listing link and displayed price should remain accurate.
Direct-booking website
A direct-booking site lets guests select dates, see availability, review the total price and fees, submit a request or confirm a reservation, pay and receive follow-up information. It needs a dependable availability source, explicit booking status and a payment workflow—not just a calendar embedded on a page.
Decide which of these outcomes you need before choosing software. An inquiry, a host-approved request and an instantly paid reservation are different transactions and should be labelled differently to guests.

General website builder
A flexible builder can work well when presentation matters and you are comfortable selecting separate services. Wix’s vacation-rental guidance recommends connecting booking tools, using a custom domain, checking the mobile layout and reviewing the site before publishing: Wix vacation-rental website builder. Its description of the “best” builder—flexible design, easy booking management and growth tools—is Wix’s own product guidance, not an independent standard.
Specialist vacation-rental platform
Services such as Guesty Websites describe templates, responsive pages, a booking engine and channel-manager connections. Futurestay describes Stripe payments and channel-calendar synchronization, including an Airbnb API option and iCal. These are vendor-described capabilities; confirm that the current plan supports your properties and channels.

Embeddable widget
If your existing site already explains the property well, an embed may be the smallest change. RentalBeam’s booking-engine documentation describes an embeddable calendar with inquiry-only, approval-then-payment and optional card-payment paths, plus iCal feeds. It presents itself as a lightweight booking engine rather than a full property-management system, so check whether you also need messaging, reporting or multi-property operations.
3. Prepare the information guests need
- Property facts: location, sleeping capacity, bed configuration, amenities, parking, internet details and accurate accessibility information.
- Commercial terms: nightly or other rates, minimum stays, cleaning and other fees, taxes where applicable, deposit requirements and cancellation terms.
- Stay details: check-in and check-out times, arrival instructions, house rules, safety information and how guests can get help.
- Media: original, representative photographs with useful captions and alternative text. Do not show features that are unavailable or materially different from the accommodation.
For more than one property, give each rental its own page and make comparison, availability and booking paths easy to find.

4. Build the essential pages
Property and availability pages
Lead with the accommodation’s strongest factual details, a clear photo gallery, sleeping arrangements, amenities and an availability or inquiry control. State whether a button sends an inquiry, requests approval or confirms a paid booking.
Location and practical information
Describe the area, transport, nearby points of interest and any access limitations without implying guarantees. Include check-in information and contact methods that remain usable after a reservation.

Policies and help
Put house rules, cancellation terms, fees, payment timing, privacy information and contact details where guests can read them before submitting dates or payment. Requirements for short-term-rental licensing, taxes, consumer protection, privacy and accessibility depend on the property’s jurisdiction and business setup; verify them with the relevant local authorities.
5. Configure availability, booking and payment
Choose the booking state
- Inquiry: the guest sends dates and contact details; you respond manually.
- Approval required: the guest requests dates, and the reservation becomes binding only after your approval and any required payment.
- Instant booking: the system checks availability, takes the configured payment and issues a confirmation automatically.
Connect calendars carefully
Platforms may synchronize through a native channel API or through iCal feeds. Guesty describes native API synchronization, Futurestay describes API and iCal options, and RentalBeam documents iCal feeds. These methods are not interchangeable promises of identical update speed or data coverage. Check every channel you use, how cancellations and blocked dates flow, the refresh interval and what happens when two guests select the same dates.

Set up payments
Confirm which payment methods and countries are supported, who owns the processor account, when funds settle, and how refunds, disputes and chargebacks are handled. - Open the site on a phone and desktop, choose a real-looking date range and verify that blocked dates cannot be selected.
- Check that the displayed rate, taxes, cleaning charge, deposit and total match your configured rules.
- Complete an inquiry, approval flow or test payment according to the system’s safe testing procedure.
- Verify the guest receives the correct confirmation or “request received” message, receipt and next steps.
- Confirm that the reservation blocks the dates in your primary calendar and reaches connected channels as expected.
- Test cancellation, refund and failed-payment handling, including the messages sent to the guest and host.
- Check every navigation link, contact form, policy page, image, currency display and date format.
7. Launch and maintain the site
Before publishing
- Connect the custom domain and use HTTPS through your provider.
- Review the mobile layout, including galleries, forms, date pickers and payment screens; Wix specifically recommends this review before launch.
- Ensure the availability source is current and that booking buttons describe the actual transaction.
- Keep an administrator recovery method and a record of important settings.
After launch
Monitor inquiries, abandoned or failed bookings, payment notifications and calendar conflicts. Update rates, fees, photos, amenities, policies and local information whenever they change. Use descriptive, search-friendly pages, follow-up email, social promotion or partnerships to attract visitors; a website alone does not guarantee search visibility or reservations.
8. Compare platforms without relying on “best” lists
- Setup and control: compare managed no-code setup with a site assembled from separate tools.
- Booking flow: identify whether the product supports inquiry, approval or instant payment.
- Synchronization: list each supported channel, API or iCal method, refresh behavior and conflict controls.
- Payments: verify methods, regions, processor ownership, settlement, refunds, disputes and current fees.
- Operations: check property limits, multi-property search, guest messaging, reporting and property-management-system connections.
- Total cost and portability: include subscription, setup, transaction or processing fees, domain costs, cancellation terms, exports and access to property content and booking records.
- Accessibility and localization: test keyboard navigation, screen-reader labels, image alternatives, languages, currencies and local date formats.
