To create a reusable YouTube stream key, open YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live, select the Stream tab, then open Select stream key > Create new stream key. Enter the settings you want and click Create. Choose that custom key whenever you connect your encoder to a stream.
What a reusable stream key does
A stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send a live feed to your YouTube channel. A custom stream key lets you keep using the same key instead of replacing it in your encoder for each broadcast. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat yours as private: do not publish it or show it in screenshots.
This workflow is for encoder-based streaming with software or hardware. It is different from starting a stream directly from a webcam.
Before you create one
- Your channel must be verified.
- YouTube says the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- YouTube says a person must be at least 16 to live stream.
- You need access to YouTube Studio and an encoder to send the video feed.

Create a custom stream key
- In YouTube Studio, click Create, then Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, select the Stream tab.
- Open Select stream key and choose Create new stream key.
- Enter your preferred settings and click Create. The new custom key will appear in the stream-key list.
- Select that key when setting up your encoder, and keep using it for later broadcasts.
The exact options shown when creating a key depend on YouTube Studio’s current interface. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings page covers custom keys and stream settings.
Connect the key to your encoder
- In your encoder, choose its YouTube connection option if one is available. Otherwise, open the stream’s connection details in YouTube Studio.
- Copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server or stream URL field.
- Copy the custom stream key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Do not put the URL in the key field or the key in the server field.
- Start the encoder and follow the Live Control Room prompts to start the broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection flow. The key alone does not send video; the encoder must be configured and running.

Custom key or “Reuse settings”?
Choose Create new stream key when your goal is to make a key you can select and reuse. Reuse settings is a separate shortcut when creating a new stream: it carries over the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key. You can edit those details afterward. Use the custom key for key reuse; choose Reuse settings when you also want to carry forward the previous stream configuration.
Reset a key if it may be exposed
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab.
- Find Stream key and click Reset beside the hidden key.
- Copy the replacement key into your encoder and update its saved configuration before streaming again.
YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Resetting invalidates the old credential, so any encoder still using it must be updated.

Troubleshooting
- The key does not appear in the list: Check that you completed Create new stream key and clicked Create. Reopen Select stream key to locate and select it.
- The encoder cannot connect: Check that the stream URL is in the server field and the key is in the stream-key field. Confirm that the encoder is using the custom key selected in Studio.
- The key stopped working after a reset: Replace the old saved key in the encoder with the new one from Studio.
- You cannot reset the key: Ask a channel owner or manager to reset it; YouTube does not give that permission to editors or viewers.
- You cannot access live streaming: Check channel verification, live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and YouTube’s age requirement.
