This guide covers signup for each of the three, plus age rules and privacy settings. None of them requires you to buy a headset or pay for software just to create the account.
Pick the platform first
Accounts don’t carry over between these services. Before you sign up, decide on these points:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- What you want to do and where your friends already play.
- How you’ll access it: browser, mobile app, console, PC or VR headset.
- Age and guardian rules for whoever will use the account.
- Whether you already have an account, for example through a console.
- Privacy controls and recovery options on the service.
Meta account and Meta Horizon profile
Meta says you can set up an account from a web browser, the Meta Horizon mobile app, or inside VR. The account lets you log into Meta VR products and view and manage purchased apps. Linking Facebook or Instagram is optional, according to Meta’s Meta Accounts FAQ.

- Meta Horizon profile: the social identity other people see. Meta’s FAQ states: “You will be required to create a Meta Horizon profile when you sign up for a Meta account.”
During setup you choose visible details, such as a name and a unique username. You can manage profile and privacy settings afterward.

Background
On July 7, 2022, Meta Horizon OS Developers wrote: “Today we’re introducing Meta accounts, a new way for people to log into their VR headsets that don’t require a Facebook account.” That is history, not a current announcement. See the original post.
Developer accounts are different
Meta’s developer sign-up page is a separate path. Developers must verify their accounts with a payment method and/or phone number to keep them valid. Ordinary users don’t need to do this.

If you have played Fortnite, Fall Guys or Rocket League on a console, Epic says you may already have an Epic account. Sign in with that platform account and complete it, rather than starting a new one. That keeps your progress and purchases synced.

Under Roblox’s terms, people aged 5 and older may have an account. Anyone under 18 must create it together with a parent or guardian, who accepts the terms for them. Age, family and privacy
Age rules vary by platform and can vary by region. Meta’s age-group documentation (updated April 2, 2026) is written for app developers and notes that local law can set a different minimum. Don’t read it as a complete consumer age policy. Check each platform’s current family rules before signing up a child.
